Regarding the story of Rock filming the new Baywatch movie in Georgia in March and April and how it will affect WrestleMania, it has been known for some time that there was almost no chance he was actually wrestling a match on the show. As with most years, they will probably try to figure out a way to have him make a non-wrestling appearance, but an actual match is pretty much out the window. Hunter vs. Rock was the original plan, and Hunter vs. Seth Rollins was the back-up plan, and both are obviously out.
Smackdown is live this coming Tuesday night and the company has announced New Day vs. Lucha Dragons for the show.
Speaking of New Day, you couldn’t buy any of the unicorn horns last night at Smackdown. If you go to the WWE Shop site, they’re backordered. Not sure how many they originally produced but they have apparently sold like crazy.
If you haven’t checked it out, we have had some great Ring of Honor guests on Wrestling Observer Live the last three days, Raymond Rowe of War Machine on Monday (challenging for the Tag Titles on Friday’s Final Battle PPV), Michael Elgin on Tuesday (challenging Moose, and also facing Jay Lethal likely for the ROH World Title at the New Japan Tokyo Dome on July 4th), Lethal today, and we’ve got Jay Briscoe and Adam Cole scheduled for the next two days.
Lethal in the interview today noted that ROH is trying to rebrand the title as the “ROH World Title” and not the “ROH World Heavyweight Title” since the feeling is that most of the wrestlers in the company are not heavyweights. What’s funny is Lethal is almost 220 and didn’t consider himself a heavyweight, however in UFC if you are over 205 pounds, you are a heavyweight. Heavyweight is not 265, that’s the upper limit — 266 is superheavyweight and heavyweight is 206-265 pounds.

Bovada already has odds up for a Conor McGregor vs. Jose Aldo rematch and Conor is only a slight favorite, -160 vs. +130. It’s still to be determined what happens to Mr. McGregor, but we should get some clues after this Saturday’s UFC on FOX show headlined by lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos and Donald Cerrone.
Combate Americas is running their second MMA show tonight on NBC Universo starting at 11 pm eastern. Lucha Underground/AAA star Konnan will be doing commentary, presumably for the Spanish broadcast. The card is mostly unknown fighters, with Liz McCarthy likely being the most familiar name to casual fans as she’s fought a couple of times for Invicta. There is no advertised main event for the show, which will also air on the Fight Network in Canada. Rey Misterio is a brand ambassador for the group but it hasn’t been announced if he’ll appear on the show.
WSOF will follow-up the spectacle that was WSOF 25 with another show Friday night on NBC Sports Network. The show takes place at the Chelsea in the Cosmo in Las Vegas, the same venue that hosted UFC shows last Thursday and Friday night. Team Alpha Male fighter Lance Palmer defends the Featherweight title in the main event against Brazilian Alexandre de Almeida. “Gentleman” Josh Hill of TUF fame (nephew of “Gentleman” Jerry Valiant/”Stomper” Guy Mitchell) and recent UFC cut Robbie Peralta will also fight on the show, which returns to it’s regular 9 pm eastern time slot after being bumped back to 11 o’clock for their last outing. The Fight Network will also be broadcasting this show with the prelims streaming at WSOF.com

Jonathan Snowden at Bleacher Report and Brian Fritz at The Sporting News both interviewed new “voice of SmackDown” Mauro Ranallo about landing his dream job. The Snowden interview is the more newsworthy of the two, with Ranallo alluding to SmackDown becoming a hybrid of NXT and Raw.
On a related note, the entire original crew (Renee Young, Kyle “Arda Ocal” Edwards, and Ranallo) from “Right After Wrestling” is now under WWE contract. The show still lives on as Aftermath. (Thx Don Forbes)
Our “Filthy” Tom Lawlor wasn’t the only one upset about Sage Northcutt making $40k and $40k for this Fight Pass main event last week. Eddie “Truck” Gordon, Chris Camozzi, Nick Newell and Ryan LaFlare have also gone public with the discontent.
Chris Weidman on his own doom from Saturday’s UFC 194: I will remember this moment forever. It has already changed me for the better. The motivation I have inside myself has never been stronger. I did not feel like myself in there for many reasons but it was a loss that I needed and deserved. I have been playing back different moments in the fight where i didn’t do or react the way I should have but this was all part of a true master plan that God has in store for me. I will be back and I will be champion again. I just wanna let everyone know that I am ok. I am so blessed with an amazing family, friends, team and fans. Thank you all so much for the support. It means more now than ever.

Nothing at this point has been announced for Raw tonight. Obviously the key will be how they handle the aftermath of the Roman Reigns/HHH angle and how that ties into the Royal Rumble. They are in Philadelphia and were expecting the best crowd for a Raw event in the U.S. in months because of a strong advance.
WWE sent out a press release today pushing that Coca Cola will be the presenting sponsor for Tribute to the Troops which airs on 12/23 on USA from 8-10 p.m. Getting Coca Cola involved with WWE has been a goal for years.
John Cena has a role in “Daddy’s Home,” the new movie with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg that comes out over Christmas. That’s the movie Taryn Terrell has a role as a cheerleader who gets hit in the face with a basketball which got some media when it was filmed in New Orleans some time back. That spot is in the trailer that I’ve seen recently at movie previews.
For the weekend, the No. 1 search was Conor McGregor with 2 million. UFC 194 had 1 million. Amazingly, both beat the Warriors winning streak ending at 1 million. No. 5 was Chris Weidman with 200,000. No. 14 was Urijah Faber with 50,000. No. 20 was Roy Jones Jr. Although not close to Ronda Rousey numbers, those are otherwise huge numbers and probably indicate big PPV numbers. UFC officials were talking that it would be the biggest of the year. WWE was No. 6 in Google searches yesterday with 200,000, which is the level just about every B PPV show gets. Top searches were BKS Ivengar, Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers, Independence Day 2 and Philadelphia Eagles.
A story has gone around regarding producers audio from just before the McGregor vs. Aldo fight where Joe Rogan spoke to a producer off air saying Aldo looks soft and deflated. “He looks way different. But it could be that he’s done a lot of cardio. Don’t want to jump to conclusions.” Rogan also said, “Aldo looks nervous as F*** too.” and told the producer he was picking McGregor now.
WWE
Mick Foley said he was going to write something on Facebook in response to Ric Flair criticizing him on Tuesday on Flair’s show. Flair had been critical of Foley being critical of WWE creative. Hasn’t everyone been critical of WWE creative in the last month? I mean this past weekend I was around people who are MMA people who are lifelong fans and they say the same things everyone else says when it comes to creative and the interviews.
There were a lot of problems with the WWE Network last night, more than usual, particularly during the pregame show. I was able to watch it on wwe.com with no problem which is the free site, but I couldn’t watch it on the network.
WWE stock was up 22 cents today to $16.09 per share.

WWE TLC PPV ON SUNDAY FROM THE TD GARDEN IN BOSTON PREVIEW
Sheamus vs. Roman Reigns for WWE title in a TLC match – This is kind of weird because the choices are getting the belt off Sheamus right away on a weak PPV, or keeping a weak champion for another month. My gut says Rumble is the bigger show and you can hold it off until then, but it really doesn’t matter. Ultimately they still need to get a heel hot, and Sheamus isn’t the guy. The matches these two have been having on the road haven’t been tearing the houses down, but WWE TLC matches usually deliver.
Kevin Owens vs. Dean Ambrose for IC title – They have to get Ambrose hotter, whether that’s a turn or what, I don’t know. Owens should retain here and on paper they should have a really good match.
New Day vs. Lucha Dragons vs. Usos in a ladder match for tag titles – Given the Lucha Dragons were given two wins over the New Day on TV, they’re probably losing to the New Day here. It’s not time for the title switch, nor given where the Usos have been positioned in the food chain with Ambrose & Reigns, are they the ones to beat in this match.
Charlotte vs. Paige for the Divas title – A lot here will be determined by the crowd, both in if they give the match a chance, and who they cheer. Charlotte technically hasn’t turned and Paige did back away from her on Monday, but until backing away, Paige was positioned as the face in their segment. The key is whether people care enough one way or the other, and get into the match.
Alberto Del Rio vs. Jack Swagger for the U.S. title in a chair match – This is a big shot for Swagger so he should be motivated, even though he is almost surely losing and even if the match gets over, which Del Rio’s matches haven’t been doing of late, it won’t matter because Swagger isn’t in their plans. The key is will Zeb Colter come out and screw Swagger and the breakup on Monday was a swerve to lead to the finish, or is Zeb gone with Del Rio.
Bray Wyatt & Erick Rowan & Luke Harper & Braun Strowman vs. Dudleys & Tommy Dreamer & Rhyno in a tables match. WWE doesn’t like to put over guys from the past, particularly whose are still best known from another promotion, and the Wyatts are their own act, so Wyatts would be expected to win, unless they are doing a longer four vs. four program with these teams.
Rusev vs. Ryback – I think it’s Rusev’s turn this week, right? Ryback has been working really hard of late and Rusev can go. They probably won’t get a lot of time, though.
Becky Lynch vs. Sasha Banks– Banks is from the Boston area so she’ll probably be cheered even though Lynch is positioned as the face.
WWE talent always works hard but aside from Owens vs. Ambrose, there isn’t a match that will probably get enough time that is a lock for a great match. A lot of this show feels like it’ll be determined by how the main event does overall, and what kind of a story they tell if they hold off the Reigns title win.
We’re looking for your thoughts on tonight’s TLC show as well as last night’s UFC 194 show, so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to Dave Meltzer

We cover all the news coming out of last night’s UFC 194 on last night’s Wrestling Observer Radio. A lot of the talk today concerns Conor McGregor’s contract demands that people are talking like he’s going to ask for which would be a level of money that only the top PPV draws in boxing have gotten and nobody in MMA has gotten. Dana White talked about how McGregor can challenge Saturday’s Donald Cerrone vs. Rafael dos Anjos winner for the lightweight title and give up the featherweight title, but McGregor said he wants both belts and is not giving up the featherweight belt. As far as what is next for McGregor, nobody is going to make a decision until after this coming Saturday’s lightweight title fight.
Yoel Romero vs. Jacare Souza scoring, Judge Lester Griffin gave Souza rounds two and three; Judge Glenn Trowbridge gave Romero the first two rounds and gave a 10-8 round one and Judge Tony Weeks gave the first two rounds to Romero. Of 17 key media members polled at MMADecisions.com, only two gave the fight to Romero. Three, including me, had it a draw based on a 10-8 first round for Romero and Souza taking two and three, while 12 others had a 10-9 first for Romero and rounds two and three for Souza. I thought two and three were clearly for Souza.
Luke Rockhold last night talked about wanting Vitor Belfort in a rematch although he also said he knows he does have to face Romero. Belfort knocked out Rockhold two years ago, and Rockhold has been furious about it, especially since Belfort was jacked up on TRT at the time.
Before the stoppage, two judges had Luke Rockhold up 30-26 after three rounds and the other had him up 29-27, with the first round the one in question. All three gave the third round a 10-8, which you had to, but having to doesn’t always happen. Judges are far more liberal now with 10-8s which is a good thing..
There is a major breakthrough on treatment of concussions that has started gaining some traction in the MMA world. I talked about it last night on the Observer radio show but for WWE, all of wrestling, MMA and high school football programs. It is a way to really improve treatment, along with far better methods to determine both the extent of the brain injuries that an athlete has and determining when an injured athlete should be allowed to return to their sport.
Bryan and I will be back tonight with coverage of the WWE TLC PPV. We’ll also be taking questions on wrestling and MMA that can be sent to mailbag@wrestlingobserver.com
WWE
TLC tonight is close to sold out. The expectation is it will sell out. The set up is 13,800 so they’ll probably announce in the 16s.
Steve Austin’s show with Shawn Michaels airs immediately after TLC tonight on the WWE Network.
Big advance for Raw in Philadelphia tomorrow. Raw hasn’t sold out in the U.S. in months, but there is the belief this one will either sell out or come very close. Weird how all the negativity on the product and the bad ratings and this week’s key shows are doing well.
NXT sold out Blackpool, England today, but that was a small venue. We’re looking for reports, but William Regal did an interview and the crowd loved him, as expected since he started there and is billed from there. The crowd was going totally nuts for Jason Jordan & Chad Gable as well.

A note since one of our readers didn’t know, WWE no longer allows fans to bring cameras into the arena at their house shows. One reader said that last night in Lewiston, ME, many fans were upset about it.
Not the best of signs. At the NXT shows in the U.K., fans were booing the TLC promotional video.
Ronda Rousey will be featured on Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. as part of the Barbara Walters’ special on the year’s most fascinating people. Those on the list besides Rousey are Bradley Cooper, Amy Shumer, Tracy Morgan, Bernie Sanders, Misty Copeland and Donna Karan. (thanks to Jon Southerland)
ESPN covered the Conor McGregor win as a significant story that I saw, but not nearly as much on the Luke Rockhold win. The coverage wasn’t close to that of the Ronda Rousey loss.
Ratings in Brazil were unreal last night. Like the glory days level.
TSN in Canada didn’t mention the fight until about 15 minutes in and highlights weren’t shown until 20 minutes into their SportsCenter with everything based on the Warriors loss (which was a huge story in the U.S. and all the hockey coverage.
FS 1 has a Best of Donald Cerrone TV special at 8:30 p.m. Eastern time tonight.

Tryouts for Ultimate Fighter are tomorrow at 8 a.m. at the Red Rock Casino with the next season being light heavyweights, plus bantamweight and strawweight women. ROH sent out a press release today regarding a partnership with PWG as we’ve noted has been talked about for a few months. Basically ROH contracted talent is now allowed in PWG. Before, with the exception of The Young Bucks and Roderick Strong, no contracted ROH guys could appear on PWG shows. Guys like Matt Sydal don’t have an ROH contract.
Destination America is pretty much done with TNA. This coming Wednesday, they will air from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., or out of prime time, with no replay. At this point, that is the last scheduled episode airing., so TNA would be off for two weeks before the launch on Pop TV.
Kyle O’Reilly was the latest ROH performer under contract to appear on PWG last night in Reseda, CA. Heard last night’s show was great.

Here is F4WOnline.com’s coverage of UFC 194, Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor for the featherweight title. As was mentioned yesterday almost all of the professional fighters picked Aldo over McGregor when asked who they thought would win. The professional fighters were not in such heavy agreement for the somewhat forgotten and understandably overshadowed co-mainevent between Chris Weidman and Luke Rockhold for the light heavyweight title. It is a very hard fight to pick as they seem VERY evenly matched.

Dana White on Frankie Edgar getting a title shot after his destruction of Chad Mendes last night: “Nobody can deny Frankie anymore. He looked amazing tonight, and he’ll get whatever he wants.”
If the last three days straight of MMA weren’t enough for you, Pancrase 273 will air on UFC Fight Pass around the time UFC 194 ends. No real names on the show that would be familiar to North American fans with Issei Tamura, who fought TJ Dillashaw at UFC 158, being the only former UFC fighter on the card. The main event is a bantamweight title fight between Shintaro Ishitawa and Victor Henry. There will also be a men’s strawweight title fight on the show.
Speaking of Fight Pass show, Bellator Heavyweight Champion Vitaly Minakov knocked out Josh Copeland in the main event of a show that aired on the UFC’s streaming service on Friday. He’s now 17-0.
In the main event of the ONE Championships show yesterday from Manilla, which was tarnished by the death of a young fighter scheduled to compete on it just hours prior, Brandon Vera KO’d Paul Cheng to become that group’s Heavyweight Champion. Strawweight sensation Angela Lee moved to 4-0 on the undercard with a 2nd round sub. She’s finished every one of her pro opponents and is already one of the most popular fighters on their roster.

From Bryan Alvarez: For those of you asking about the Dark Matter Digital Network and the apparent final retirement of Art Bell, I really don’t know what is going on, nor do I know if I will be doing a show on the network this coming Sunday night. All I know for sure is that one way or another, After Dark will continue, even if it goes back to being a podcast on the website as it was originally before we moved over there. There will be a new show this weekend as I’ve already taped the interview with James Garbarino where we will discuss the psychology of mass shooters based on his 20 years of interviewing killers after the fact. There is more information on the situation up at Artbell.com. Whatever happens, I do want to really thank Keith Rowland for all of the often-thankless hard work and personal expense that he put into the Dark Matter Digital Network over the past few years, and I hope for only the best for him.

This is totally nuts. A JetBlue flight heading from New York to Las Vegas turned around in mid-flight after two “Irish lads”, one of whom had already created a disturbance and caused the flight to be delayed, got into a physical altercation apparently over Conor McGregor.
MMAFighting.com has a story up where you can read who various MMA stars are picking in the Conor McGregor vs. Jose Aldo Jr. fight tomorrow. Virtually everyone picks Aldo. A few years ago they polled the fighters for the first Anderson Silva vs. Chris Weidman fight. At the time, virtually everyone on the outside thought Anderson Silva was winning that fight, but UFC sent out a press release where nearly every fighter picked Weidman. It seemed like the usual UFC deal during Countdown specials where they try to build the best case possible for the underdog to drum up interest but, in fact, the fighters largely really did pick Weidman to win and Weidman won. Obviously anything can happen in a fight, but it’s very interesting to read what fighters are thinking during a time that Aldo, the champion, is going in as an underdog as of a few days ago. Filthy Tom Lawlor on Monday’s Figure Four Daily did change his mind this week and is now picking McGregor to win. It’ll be interesting to see the odds after the weigh-in tonight given that both men for the first time ever had to make weight without the use of an IV, and that could change the game.
WWE
WWE Network officially launches in Japan on January 5th, the day after the annual New Japan Tokyo Dome spectacular.
Someone asked Joey Styles on Twitter why it was taking so long to get new TV episodes online, and he noted: “Because ECW illegally used music we had no rights to, it takes a looooong time to edit the episodes.”
Ronda Rousey told TMZ today that she wants Holly Holm at UFC 200. The article said she “came out of hiding today” and “looked fine”. It also noted that, if you recall the story of the soldier inviting her to the Marine Corps Ball and her saying yes, even though she’s in a lot of pain and psychologically all beat up, the ball is tonight and she’s going.
Add Joe Rogan to the list of those who think Holly should fight Miesha Tate prior to the Ronda Rousey fight, which would also give Rousey more time to heal up and work on her game. He said on his podcast that even if Miesha won you’d end up with a crazy “love triangle” where Ronda would have ready-made matches with both of them and they could rematch each other, plus if Holm beat Miesha she’d be building a legacy to make the Rousey fight even bigger when it happened.
UPDATE! It’s not true. At the press conference last night, Sage joked that he was only allowed to use it for his school work, than admitted that whoever said it on Fight Pass (Jon Anik) was joking.
The press conference should be available on Fight Pass. We’re told that live (and probably on tape as well), he captivates the room at these things and comes off as a “happy-go-lucky robot”.
Shane writes: “The McGregor fight was featured on this evenings RTE News in Ireland which is the top news broadcast in the country. It was a piece ahead of the normal sports section which is rare for a sports story. It showed McGregor at his public workout and how it was the biggest fight of his career. It was mentioned a large number of Irish supporters coming to Vegas with bars stocking up on Guinness and a local band writing a song about McGregor.”

Want to thank Dan Masters (@DanStraightEdge) for doing a great job co-hosting the Bryan & Vinny Show last night. I literally talked to Dan for about 5 seconds before he was thrust on the air and he did an awesome job. He was one of four who donated to the latest Whale Scout Indiegogo campaign and earned a guest hosting gig, so there are more on the way. In the two years we’ve offered spots, every single guest host has done a great job (no pressure to those in the future!). The guest spots via Skype/phone are sold out, but we have ONE in-person spot available which includes airfare, hotel and a seat in the studio, plus tons of smaller perks at the Whale Scout Indiegogo site. This past weekend Whale Scout helped out at North Creek Forest, where they are converting a forest into a park, and helping to improve water quality and remove invasive species, so your donation, however big or small, helps with other habitat restoration projects as well. Thank you so much to everyone who has donated, and thank you again to Dan!

Today is the 40th anniversary of Terry Funk winning the NWA title from Jack Brisco in Miami Beach. The storyline is that Jack vs. Dory Funk Jr. was advertised because Jack vs. Dory was always a big draw, and they sold out. Dory was actually in Japan at the time. So Terry was the replacement. It was an Eddie Graham storyline with the idea Jack was training for Dory, who had a totally different style, but Terry was training for Jack, and reversed the figure four into an inside cradle for the pin. They actually showed that match on TV in San Francisco about two weeks later and for the standards of the time, it was an incredible match. A lot of wrestlers copied the flow and the finish and in Mexico a lot of the superstars copied that figure four reversed into an inside cradle as a finish.

Sting said on Ric Flair’s newest podcast episode (ep #32) that he needs neck surgery. Key quote (h/t Geno Mrosko at Cageside Seats for the transcription): “Yeah, MRI’s and neurologists have been looking at it, Dr. Maroon out of Pittsburgh, he’s looked at it. He’s telling me that I’ll have to have a surgery. The dust only in the last couple weeks has kind of started to settle a little bit for me, just trying to get so much done in life but now it’s time to go get this thing taken care of. No, I’m hoping [they don’t have to do a fusion surgery]. I know that’s one of the techniques that they use and I’m not sure if Dr. Maroon will have to do that or not. I’ve got two spots in my neck that are troublesome. I guess it’s called cervical spinal stenosis. That’s what it is. I have two areas in my neck where the spinal canal, which holds the spinal cord, it’s kind of choked off in two different locations. Lucky that a catastrophe didn’t happen that night, long story short. I’ve gotta go get it fixed. I guess John Cena had something very similar, he had his fixed, and Dr. Maroon has done several of the WWE guys up there and all with great success.”

State authorities — in this case, the Nevada Athletic Commission — will generally be the best source for information about those kinds of issues.”
