    TODAY’S DAILY UPDATE

Monday’s RAW ratings continue their disappointing trend.  Details here. Some additional RAW ratings notes from our Paul Fontaine:  “January 2015 was down 10% overall from January 2014. December 2015 was the 13th consecutive month that RAW ratings were down from the same month the previous year and they are well on their way to making it 14 months in a row. This is the longest streak like this since October 2006-June 2008, when they dropped 21 consecutive months. For the record, they were averaging between 3.15 and 3.95 ratings points at that time, about 35% higher than the current rating average.”

MMA Fighting has a big article about Mickey Gall, the man who may end up fighting CM Punk in his UFC debut.  This guy has got a lot to say, which means he’s a perfect opponent (1-0 as a pro with 2 amateur wins). Gall will be on the latest UFC/Dana White Looking For A Fight reality show that debuts on YouTube on January 11th.

In its latest effort to push the painted swimsuit bit, SI has a pic of Ronda Rousey’s naked butt. Kind of… and if you want to see the less censored version.

    WWE

    • Muscle and Fitness has an article about Vince McMahon’s workout, complete with photographic proof of how jacked he is at 70. If you saw Raw, no more proof is necessary.
    • The show will be hammered on Monday, particularly since they did absolutely nothing to promote anything on the show other than announcing that Brock Lesnar was going to show up.
    • For those of you who vividly remember the “Finger Poke of Doom” that had its yearly anniversary on Monday, you are now so old that the clip is an ancient mystery unable to be comprehended by younger writers.

    UFC/MMA

    • The UFC 195 prelims did 1,023,000 viewers Saturday on FS 1 — a much higher number than would’ve been expected given interest in the PPV and the marquee value (or lack thereof) of fighters on that portion of the show. No show that did 1 million viewers plus for the prelims has done less than 325,000 buys in the FS 1 era. That would be a higher than expected buyrate for this show.
    • Martin Kampmann, a UFC welterweight who has headlined five smaller shows for UFC in the past, announced his retirement today at the age of 33. In an interview with UFC.com, he stated that he will probably remain around the sport in a coaching or advisory capacity, but won’t fight again. He last fought in August 2013, losing via 4th round KO to Carlos Condit.
    • UFC announced two fights today for cards in February. At UFC 196, Misha Cirkunov (10-2), who had an impressive debut at UFC Saskatoon, will take on the debuting Alex Nicholson (6-1) in a Light Heavyweight bout. Sam Alvey is injured and had to pull out of his middleweight fight against Daniel Sarafian (9-5). Replacing him will be Oluwale Bamgbose (5-1), who lost to Uriah Hall in his UFC debut last August.
    • Josh Koscheck is out of Bellator 148 due to injury, originally slated to be his promotional debut. The Paul Daley vs. Andy Uhrich fight has been moved to the main event slot of that show. With no other even moderate stars on the undercard, this show is going to struggle to do any kind of rating. This also might put off the eventual Koscheck/Daley fight, but Bellator might just do it anyway assuming Daley wins.
    • Bloody Elbow has a detailed article about legal and other issues plaguing Titan FC.
    • Here’s the MMA Hour 2015 Awards with Ariel Helwani. Helwani is also a guest on Jim Ross’ podcast this week too.

    MISC

    • Interestingly, not only is TNA doing a LIVE PPV on Friday night, which seems like madness since they had exactly one TV show with which to promote it, but they are also apparently only charging $14.95 for it.  At least, that’s the price on the Flipps app.  You can buy it on traditional PPV as well.
    • New Japan announced last night that Yohei Komatsu & Sho Tanaka will be finishing up at the end of the month to go to CMLL for their learning excursion, with the Fantasticamania tours serving as their farwell. Like with most young lion excursions, they will most likely remain in CMLL for the next couple of years before being brought back to NJPW. They start in CMLL on 1/31 as Fujin (Komatsu) and Rajin (Tanaka) which are names based on wind and thunder gods, respectively.
    • Kurt Angle said that his matches at Sands Bethlehem Event Center will be among his last and best.
    • Here’s an interview with Jim Brunzell on Steel Domain Radio.
    • Full NJPW/CMLL Fantasticamania lineups can be found here.
    • PWEclipse runs its next show on February 27 at the Oshawa Legion Hall in Oshawa, Ontario, with Cody Deaner and Ethan Page.
    • Here’s Live Audio Wrestling’s yearly ‘Best Of’ show, taking a look back at 2015. As always, Dave Meltzer makes a weekly appearance.

  • Daily Update: Styles, Nakamura, Bullet Club to WWE, Rousey to host SNL

The huge news story which broke early Monday morning, is that former IWGP and TNA Champion AJ Styles, former IWGP Champion Shinsuke Nakamura, Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson have given notice to New Japan Pro Wrestling. We have more here. It appears that those with current NJPW contracts will be finishing up their contracted dates before heading to WWE. It is unknown whether or not they will start on the main roster or head to NXT. It seems obvious, but that’s not always the route WWE takes, as we’ve seen with Samoa Joe and others who were ready when they signed. Bryan and Dave did an extra show yesterday with Filthy Tom discussing the situation. NJPW booker Gedo was told right before the big Tokyo Dome show, Wrestle Kingdom 10, about losing the talent, but apparently no finishes were changed.

Chris Jericho re-re-re-re-debuted last night on Monday Night Raw, and did some ridiculously unfunny comedy with the New Day. We’re looking for reports from Raw in San Antonio with Roman Reigns vs. Sheamus for the WWE title with Vince McMahon as referee, with anything not evident from the broadcast.

We’re also looking for reports on WWE show in Corpus Christi (Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens for IC title; Kane vs. Bray Wyatt) to Dave Meltzer.

Don’t forget! The first Smackdown on the USA Network will be taped on Tuesday night in Laredo.  Mauro Ranallo debuts as announcer and John Cena will be on the show.

    WWE

    • The Royal Rumble PPV will be given away for FREE on the WWE Network as was  announced last night on Raw (first time subscribers only). The announcement came on a day where investors lost a bit of confidence in the WWE stock which finished down 23 cents to $17.61 per share and is down another 38 cents today, as of this update.
    • The Miz says WWE talent is drug tested ”non-stop, all day, every day.” Isn’t it more like “quarterly?” At least as of September 2007, when program administrator Dr. David Black was interviewed as part of the Congressional inquiry into pro wrestling, four times a year was the guaranteed minimum. At the time, it was a recent change from aiming for four times a year as the average.

    UFC/MMA

    • EA Sports announced the release date of the new EA Sports UFC 2 video game as March 16 and released the first gameplay trailer. You can pre-order the game now, and it was announced that pre-orders will come with a code to get Kazushi Sakuraba, Bas Rutten, and a mystery fighter to be named later as downloadable content.
    • Jose Aldo became just the third MMA fighter (after Jon Jones and Ronda Rousey) to make the Forbes 30 under 30 list. He is also the only Brazilian on the list. According to Forbes, it is a list of the “brightest young entrepreneurs, breakout talents and change agents in 20 different sectors” and Aldo made the athletes group. Neither Jones nor Rousey (nor Conor McGregor for that matter) are on this year’s list.
    • WSOF announced the final two fights for its main card broadcast on NBC Sports Network, the company’s next show. All four fighters are complete unknowns. Two unbeaten welterweights, Jaleel Willis (6-0) and Chauncey Foxworth (2-0), square off in one while two lightweights, Bryce Mitchell (4-0) and Jorge Medina (4-2), meet in the other. The show is headlined by former UFC fighter Mike Ricci squaring off with Joe Condon in a lightweight bout.
    • Former Bellator Light Heavyweight champion Emanuel Newton will face Linton Vassell at Bellator 149 in a fight announced by the promotion today. This is a rematch of a fight they had when Newton was champion, where Vassell was winning by dominating the grappling until, out of nowhere, Newton got a rear naked choke out of nowhere for the win. The show takes place on February 19th in Houston and is headlined by the double spectacle of Ken Shamrock v Royce Gracie and Kimbo Slice v Dada 5000.
    • A website in India has a feature on an fighter turned actress cast to play a boxer. Calling her a “national-level kick boxer who is well-versed with mixed martial arts and is a black belt in karate,” the article discusses transition of Ritika Singh from combat sports to acting in Bollywood.

    MISC

    • A CBS affiliate in Philadelphia has an article about Chikara.
    • This week’s Between the Sheets podcast features WWN Live announcer/FSM columnist/former NXT Creative Assistant Rob Naylor joining the show to discuss December 29, 1986 – January 4, 1987 including the chances that Wrestlemania III gets cancelled because of Andre the Giant’s back problems, Paul Orndorff’s neck and shoulder issues, AJPW & NJPW foreigner wackiness, Jesse Ventura in Arnold movies, all sorts of territory goodness especially our love of Continental, and Rob’s love of Vladimir Petrov
    • On the latest 6:05 Superpodcast, David Bixenspan and Brian Last discuss Mario Galento exposing the business in 1974, the amazing story of Jack Donovan getting ambushed in a Tennessee locker room, Dark Journey’s surprising new career, and more.

    TODAY’S DAILY UPDATE

Wrestling Observer Radio with Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez will be returning with 2 shows today.  The first show covering the Tokyo Dome show early tonight,  then late tonight we will have a show covering tonight’s WWE RAW.  If you’ve got any questions we will be doing questions tonight at mailbag@wrestlingobserver.com

A strong Tokyo Dome show earlier today: NEW JAPAN WRESTLE KINGDOM 10 Results.  Expect angles to be shot at New Year’s Dash at Korakuen Hall for the big shows in February, plus they should be announcing the Fantastica Mania lineup.  We have comments from a few people at the show live in the feedback section.

As noted on the front page, Chris Jericho is expected on Raw tonight.  We don’t have anything confirmed other than he was in San Antonio last night and that he’s reported to be backstage today.

With the debut of Smackdown on USA on Thursday, the expectation is a big angle will be shot for this show.  This was geared to be a really big television week with the start of the Hardcore build for the Royal Rumble PPV, the No. 2 show of the year.

The story going around regarding Jim Ross and the Pittsburgh Pirates broadcasting has nothing to it.  I think he was asked a question that if the job was offered would he take it, and he said he’d move to Pittsburgh if it was offered.  That’s true, if it was offered he would take it, but there are no talks in that direction and it would shock people if there would be any talks.  It was said to be a response to a question that then took on a life of its own.

TNA has added a graphic showing Angelina Love & Velvet Sky & Madison Rayne vs. Jade & Marti Bell & Rebel for the Impact debut tomorrow night on Pop TV.  Love is pregnant so nobody expects her to wrestle on the show.  Love is scheduled to appear on the show.  TNA has given away tickets for all the tapings in Bethlehem, PA since they are running five straight nights including a PPV on Friday night that has had almost no pub whatsoever around it.   Billy Corgan has recorded a new theme for Impact that debuts tomorrow, performed by The Smashing Pumpkins.

    WWE

    • Brock Lesnar is the main person advertised for the 2/8 Raw show at the Key Arena in Seattle.  Lesnar is advertised back for next week’s Raw in New Orleans.  We’ll see if that is promoted tonight.
    • Lilian Garcia returns to Raw this week after missing last week with laryngitis.
    • NXT goes back to taping on Thursday night.  They have another year-in-review show on Wednesday and the first new show of the year will air on 1/13.
    • The WWE Network is being advertised on the end boards during the NHL games at the Barclays Center.
    • Lots of photos on Vince McMahon, HHH and Stephanie McMahon being at the Dallas Cowboys game yesterday.  They advertised in the stadium that WrestleMania was coming on 4/3.
    • WWE stock closed at $17.61 per share today, down 23 cents.

    UFC

    • UFC 195 was the No. 4 most searched for term on Friday in the U.S. and the No. 5 most searched for term on Saturday.  Both were 200,000 searches, which would correlate to a normal to slightly below normal level PPV number in most cases.
    • Holly Holm will be on UFC Tonight on Wednesday.  There is talk that this is to talk about her next fight.

    MISCELLANEOUS

    • As far as the weekend movies went, Daddy’s Home with a John Cena cameo remained No. 2 behind Star Wars grossing $29,205,583 in week three, a small drop from No. 2.  Sisters, where Cena has a more prominent role, was No. 4 at $12,760,730 also in week three.  Concussion was No. 8 at $8 million.  Daddy’s Home was also No. 2 in Australia and Spectre (Dave Bautista) was No. 10 in Australia and No. 18 in the U.S.
    • A correction from yesterday, the Magen Boys Entertainment Action for  Autism show listed here for Vaughn, ONT at the Avenue Banquet Hall with Nikolai Volkoff, Brodus Clay, Rhino, Brutus Beefcake and Virgil will be on 1/27.  All funds go for Autism Awareness.
    • Danny Casas beat Toscano in a hair vs. hair match yesterday in Naucalpan.
    • CMLL on Saturday night at Arena Coliseo in Mexico City:  Nitrito b Aereo, Magnus b Metalico, Arkangel de la Muerte b Oro Jr. Sangre Azteca b Hombre Bala Jr., Polvora b Triton, Estellita & Princesa Sugei b Seductora & Tiffany, Niebla Roja & Pierroth & Rey Hechicero b La Mascara & Maximo Sexy & Valiente (thanks to Kris Zellner)
    • The Catch Wrestling Alliance announced they are bringing authentic catch to Singapore on 3/5 at the City Square Mall Fountain Square in Singapore.  The matches are shoots that must end with either pinfalls or submissions, with 20 minute rounds and no chokes allowed.
    • MCW on 1/23 in Joppa, MD featuring Matt Hardy, with Jeff Hardy in his corner, against King McBride for McBride’s MCW title.

Here is today’s FULL Daily Pro Wrestling History including International history: Daily pro wrestling history (1/4): Huge history of Tokyo Dome shows, Finger Poke O’Doom

  • Daily Update: NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 10, UFC 195 fall out

We have a show up with Dave Meltzer, Bryan Alvarez and Tom Lawlor covering last night’s UFC show, the Rizin show from New Year’s Eve and some wrestling.  We will be doing a show on the Tokyo Dome tomorrow afternoon and then on Raw later that night.

Hope everyone had a Happy New Year.  We’re very appreciative of all the support you’ve given us over the past year and hopefully this next year will be a good one for everyone.

We’re looking for your thoughts on tonight’s New Japan Wrestle Kingdom 10 at the Tokyo Dome as well as last nights’ UFC, so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to Dave Meltzer

We’re also looking for reports on today’s WWE shows in  Hidalgo, TX (Roman Reigns vs Sheamus for WWE title) and Corpus Christi (Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens for IC title; Kane vs. Bray Wyatt).

NEW JAPAN WRESTLE KINGDOM 10 – Follow along with Dave Meltzer here.

Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada for IWGP heavyweight title is the main event of this year’s NJPW Wrestle Kingdom show. AJ Styles will attempt to win the Intercontinental title from Shinsuke Nakamura, not Dean Ambrose. Wrestle Kingdom 10 will also have a large presence of ROH including some surprises in the New Japan Rumble. This could be a very long show given they do not have American PPV time constraints. It’s too early to say, but from the line up, this could possibly be the show of the year. Click here for a New Japan Rumble spoiler entrant…

    TODAY’S DAILY UPDATE

UFC 195 was No. 10 for most searched items on Google at 200,000, which would indicate a lower level PPV number, which most were expecting.

Carlos Condit’s talk about retirement last night wasn’t a spur of the moment emotional thing as he had talked about it for months, that if he didn’t win the title he was considering retiring. Condit landed 82 more significant strikes then Lawler, which is the greatest difference in strikes of any fighter who has ever lost a decision in UFC history.  What’s notable about the judging last night is that there were five close decisions, four splits and the unanimous decision win by Justine Kish over Nina Ansaroff.  Of those five fights, the media and judges disagreed on four of the five, all by significant margins.  For the Condit-Lawler fight, media scores were 15 for Condit, three for Lawler and two had it a draw.  We did our own poll which was 29% for Lawler, 64% for Condit and 7% had it a draw.

50,000 dollar performance bonuses were given Stipe Miocic and Michael McDonald. While Carlos Condit and Robbie Lawler earned fight of the night.

F4WOnline.com’s staff prediction results: John Pollock went 5-0, Josh Nason, David Bixenspan, Mike Sawyer, Steve Juon, Mike Sempervive and Ryan Fredrick were 4-1, Paul Fontaine, me and Front Row Brian were 3-2.

Cheeseburger and Delirious are both in Japan.  Cheeseburger will be in the Rumble tonight (opener at the Dome).  Delirious is there for business reasons.

The talk from TNA on “The Miracle” debuting refers to the debut of Michael Bennett.

    WWE

    • We’ll see how this turns out, but as of yesterday the plan was for heavy promotion of Smackdown on Raw tomorrow since it’s the week it moves to USA.
    • Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon and HHH are at today’s Dallas Cowboys game at AT&T Stadium and they were publicizing WrestleMania at the game.
    • Natalya, who hasn’t been in the ring in eight weeks, is in Corpus Christi for the house show. so that would seem like she’s starting back tonight.

    MISCELLANEOUS

    • We are looking for reports from last nights’ PWG show in Reseda but we did get this:

*Sam Roberts, Marina Sharif and a singer from Tool were at the show

    *Brian Cage beat Chris Dickinson

*Timothy Thatcher beat Drew Gulak in a good technical match

*Sami Callihan beat  Trevor Lee in an okay match

*Drew Galloway beat Jack Evans in a good match

*Adam Cole beat Speedball Mike Bailey in a good match

*Zack Sabre Jr. beat Akira Tozawa.  Huge reaction for both and a great match.  People chanted match of the year at them when it was over

*Roderick Strong beat Chris Hero to retain the PWG title

    • There was a question on the audio show about the origin of the name Iron Mike, which has been a pro wrestling nickname for guys named Mike dating back to the 40s if not earlier.  It’s a slang term for a Marine that is believed to have originated in World War I.  It was at first the name of a piece of equipment on a ship but was later used for Marines that were really tough, and there are Iron Mike statues at various military bases and academies around the country. (thanks to Karl Stern).
    • Also, to make it clear, regarding Asen Yamamoto, I’ve confused at times his father because Miyu Yamamoto was married three times.  His biological father is Nobuyasu Ikeda, a famous soccer player.  The Olympic skier, Akira Sasaki, was his stepfather.  He was using the name Asen Sasaki as an amateur wrestler when competing internationally.  He got really over on the New Year’s Eve show, but as Tom Lawlor noted, if his goal is the 2020 Olympics, he really should stay away from MMA.  Because rules and tendencies and reflexes are different, a lot of great wrestlers have gone into MMA as regulars and it has taken the edge off their competition wrestling. (thanks to Robert Sandholzer)
    • Here are the names listed for the Icons of Pro Wrestling convention on 4/16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia (before a Tommy Dreamer House of Hardcore promotion show):  Mil Mascaras, Shawn Michaels, Dreamer, Ricky Steamboat, Stan Hansen, Ron Bass, Abyss, Billy Gunn, Bill Apter, Justin Credible, Brian Cage, Cliff Compton, Kevin Thorn, Maven, Curt Hawkins, Amber Gallows, Danny Cage, Blue Meanie, Sabu, Eddie Edwards and Davey Richards.
    • MTV did a story on why your girlfriends love pro wrestling
    • LLE today at Arena Mexico has Caristico vs. Negro Casas in a singles match and Black Warrior & La Mascara & Rush vs. Cibernetico & Sharly Rockstar & Mephisto, who are the new Hell Brothers.
    • Real Sports on HBO highlighted stories from the last 20 years in its December episode available on VOD.  There was a clip of Vince McMahon that made it, as did Chris Nowinski in a 2007 story about football players and concussions.  Roddy Piper’s interview on the deaths of wrestlers wasn’t on it, nor was anyone from wrestling besides Vince (thanks to Jeff Cohen)
    • Masked Republic’s LuchaShop.com is having a 2016 sale with all merchandise 16% off through midnight Pacific time tonight using the code NY2016.  There is a ton of Lucha Libre merchandise there.
    • In Your Face Wrestling on 3/12 in Albany, NY at the Polish Community Center featuring Bob Holly, Scott Norton and Cody Deaner.  They also run on 1/16 in Albany at the Polish Community Center.
    • Magen Boys Entertainment and Action for Autism on 1/27 in Vaughan, ONT at The Avenue Banquet Hall with Nikolai Volkoff, Brodus Clay, Rhino, Brutus Beefcake and Virgil.
    • Acclaim Pro Wrestling on 1/16 in Ottawa, ONT at 379 Waverly St. with a 20 man Rumble.
    • Declaration of Anarchy III on 2/7 in Toronto at The Rockpile.
    • A show on 1/16 at the Team Vision Dojo in Orlando is billing Santana Garrett vs. Barbi Hayden with the winner getting a tour to Japan in February.  Garrett is booked on the tour but she’s putting up her spot on the tour in a billed stipulation.  Results from last night’s show:  Santana Garrett & Lince Dorado b Slade Porter & Rex Bacchus, Tyranus b Alexx Light, Brandon Scherer b Steve Weiner, Braydon Knight b Chico Adams, Mike Reed & Josh Hess b Gabriel Black & Josh Parker, Rhett Ghiddins b Ace Andrews, Jonny Vandal & Aaron Epic b Michael Patrick & Leo Brien. TODAY’S DAILY UPDATE

Wrestling Observer Radio with Sean Wheelock is up today talking with Bryan and Dave Meltzer about MMA rules and regulations, his departure from Bellator, MMA scoring and even a movie he’s working on that will be about the birth of MMA in 1993.

Jerome LeBanner showed up in the ring at the IGF show instead of his scheduled fight against Baruto on the Rizin New Year’s Show.  LeBanner “never came to Japan” and was replaced at the last minute by Peter Aerts.   He had been with IGF in the past.  Nobuyuki Sakakibara of Rizin has already said that he’s going to sue over that.

Tickets to the 2016 WWE Hall of Fame ceremony at the American Airlines Center in Dallas go on sale to the public on 1/15 at 10 a.m. Central time.  Probably a quick sellout here.  That probably means a Hall of Fame announcement will come on 1/11.

UFC has sent some Fight Pass subscribers an e-mail offering them 20 percent off UFC 195 as a gift.  I didn’t get one so it hasn’t come to everyone, but we’ve gotten e-mails from several who have gotten it.

The Vegas Fuel Energy site is offering free tickets to the TNA shows all week in Bethlehem, PA, which probably tells you how tickets are selling, but I don’t think that’s a surprise when it TNA running five straight nights in the same venue.

The 1/13 episode of NXT will feature the NXT Awards.  There will be voting on the WWE web site starting tomorrow and ending this coming Wednesday for Competitor of the Year, Male Competitor of the Year, Female Competitor of the Year, Tag Team of the Year, Match of the year, TakeOver show of the Year.

    UFC

    • Michael Bisping ripped on Anderson Silva in a Tuesday press conference noting him testing positive for three different banned substances, so that may be the theme of his promos leading to their fight.  He said that he respects him as a fighter, but lost a lot of respect for him and this fight represents him trying to beat fighters that cheated.  He said that calling yourself a martial artist and taking PED’s is “the biggest contradiction you could ever make and to be honest, he should be ashamed of himself and I feel that this should be talked about more.”  He said he believes the people who used to cheat will try and continue to cheat and manipulate the system.  “Just because they’re bringing in advanced testing doesn’t share the fact you’re still going to be a coward and you’re still going to try and cheat the system.”
    • Due to an injury to Jimi Manuwa, his 2/27 fight scheduled with Nikita Krylov in London has been canceled.

    TODAY’S DAILY UPDATE

    WWE

    UFC/MMA

    • UFC cut Fabio Maldonado, Chico Camus, Ericka Almeida, Bubba Bush, Mickael Lebout, Vernon Ramos and Jumabieke Tuerxun.  At one point, that list was believed to include Kevin Souza, who then said in an interview with MMAFighting.com said that he was not informed by the company that had been cut.  Instead, USADA emailed him and told him that he no longer had to inform them of his whereabouts at all times because he was no longer listed as a UFC fighter.  What actually happened was that he was unaware that his contract was up and it was all a miscommunication.
    • Fedor Emeliananko on Jaideep Singh:  “I think he is quite a serious contender.”
    • Here are the weigh in results for Rizin Fighting which takes place on December 31st in Japan.

    • Our annual Prediction Show will span two days this year, tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday on Wrestling Observer Live.  If you can’t listen to the show during its live airing (12 PT/3 ET on Sports Byline USA, links are up on the front page), don’t worry.  Just call between 12:05/3:05 and 12:40/3:40).  Everyone will get MAX two predictions for 2016, and next year will will crown a winner.  Obviously, if you predict something like “WrestleMania will draw more than 18,000 fans” you will not win the grand prize.  Grand prize goes to the most out-on-a-limb yet still accurate prediction (“Roman Reigns will win the title at Survivor Series over Dean Ambrose but then Sheamus will cash in and steal the belt” would be an amazing prediction if it had been made at this time last year).  We will also be reading last year’s predictions over the next two days as well and crown the 2015 winner.  If we are deluged with calls, we may move last year’s predictions reading to Sunday’s Observer Live.  We’ll play it by ear.  The numbers are up on the front page of the website.  For now, no email or text message predictions, only phone calls.  Have fun!
    • Karl Stern’s first Dragon King Dark episode will be up on the After Dark Radio website later today.  Karl will be doing one new show a week, as announced on Sunday’s After Dark Radio.  If you are a regular listener and interested in providing columns for the brand new website, email bryan@afterdarkradioshow.com.
    • ROH Winter Warrior Tour: SATURDAY, JANUARY 9TH 2016 – 7:00PM BELL TIME – NATIONAL TV TAPING. Cabarrus Events Center – 4751 NC Hwy 49 North – Concord, NC 28025.  Tickets on Sale Now.  ROH Tag Team Champions War Machine vs. All Night Express has been signed.
    • Tonight on RDS (Quebec’s version of ESPN) there will be a one-hour documentary on the Rougeau family. From Eddy Auger to his nephew Johnny and Jacques Rougeau to Jacques’ children Raymond, Jacques Jr, Armand and Joanne (who promoted here from 95-2000 for the WWF) to Jacques Jr’s sons Emile and Cedric (6 foot 7, 315 pounds) the documentary talks about all 4 generations of Rougeaus, the only ones with the McMahons to have 4 generations in wrestling.  Patric Laprade says, “Other people like Gino Brito, Pierre-Carl Ouellet, announcer Marc Blondin and myself have also been interviewed for this. I have also worked in the behind-the-scenes of this documentary.”

    TODAY’S DAILY UPDATE

For the record, according to WWE this morning the Big Show is NOT going to be the number-one entrant in the Royal Rumble.  Last night on Raw he made a confusing statement about being the first entrant which led to great confusion among fans and the announcers.  I would laugh if all of this all led to him actually being put in the Rumble in the number one spot.  Apparently Big Show will be shooting some segments clarifying what he apparently meant (he’s the first man to throw his hat into the ring for the Rumble).

Sakuraba looked all 46 of his years in a one sided loss against Shinya Aoki in the main event of Rizin’s debut show. Here are the full results from the first day of Rizin Fighting Federation.

Ronda Rousey’s sister, Maria Burns Ortiz (who coauthored Rousey’s autobiography My Fight/Your Fight), wrote a retrospective on the rise to superstardom of her sister as part of a VICE Sports year in review series. The article includes candid family photos from the past year featuring Ronda.

Thomas Golianopoulos has a really good article at Playboy.com about the death of Perro Aguayo Jr. and its impact on the business.

    WWE

    • Lemmy Kilmister, frontman of the band Motörhead, passed away Monday at age 70. In terms of pro wrestling, Motörhead provided entrance music for Triple H with such songs as “The Game” and “King of Kings” while also forming an apparent bond with Paul Levesque. In a story from this past summer, the band covered a Rolling Stones song on their last album at the request of Triple H. An English rock band that emerged in the 1970s, Motörhead became legendary in heavy metal and rock music. With Lemmy on lead vocals and bass guitar, they performed live at WrestleMania in both 2001 and 2005.
    • Based on the overnights (actual ratings not available until tomorrow), last nights game was the highest rated of the season with a 10.5 rating, although it peaked after Raw ended.
    • Heard the WWE Breaking Ground that aired on the WWE Network was very good.  The series wraps up with the final episode of the season next Monday after Raw.

    • The first episode of UFC 195 Embedded is up on the UFC YouTube channel.
    • M-1 Challenge lightweight champion Mansour “Tarzan” Barnaoui will make his first title defense, February 19 at Olympic Stadium, against Artiom Damkovsky at M-1 Challenge 64 in Moscow, Russia.  M-1 Challenge 64 will be streamed live from Moscow in high definition on M1Global.TV. Viewers will be able to watch the preliminary fights and main card by logging on to register at www.M1Global.TV. Fans may watch all of the action on their computers, as well as on Android and Apple smart phones and tablets.
    • We will have Sean Wheelock, head of the ABC rules committee as a guest on Thursday and we’re looking for any questions, thoughts or suggestions regarding rules and regulations of MMA in North America, rules you think should be changed, etc. to mailbag@wrestlingobserver.com

    • A new promotion in India calling itself the Pro Wrestling League reportedly ran a stadium show in New Delhi. Basically the inaugural event featured what most would consider amateur wrestling matches except presented with the pageantry of contemporary pro wrestling or MMA. One article from The Times of India focuses on, of all things, trying to enter the stadium, while other coverage looks at the matches themselves.
    • Mike Mooneyham reflects on pro wrestlers who passed away this year in an article for The Post and Courier (Charleston, SC).
    • An article from Bloomberg related to the Concussion movie details new equipment designed to prevent concussions in contact sports. The creation of an anti-compression collar drew inspiration from woodpeckers. The article includes a quote from Chris Nowinski.

    • On this week’s Between the Sheets podcast, Kris Zellner and David Bixenspan are joined by Dylan Hales to go over the week that was December 22-28, 1989 including the famous of Blackjack Mulligan and Kendall Windham for passing counterfeit money, Paul Heyman’s plan to unite the major indies and remaining territories, a crazy week for the USWA, one of the worst weeks of Hulk Hogan’s life, and much more.
    • EVOLVE announced that WWN Supershow: Mercury Rising 2016 on April 2nd at the WWNLive Experience in Dallas, TX will be a Night Of Appreciation For Terry Funk. “We always strive to move the art of pro wrestling forward in the WWN Family. Sometimes the best way to do that is to pay homage to those that blazed the trail in the past. Mercury Rising 2016 will feature a ceremony honoring Mr. Funk. The legend will also be available for photos and autographs. Go to MoreThanMania.com for tickets and info.”
    • PWP runs tomorrow night, 12/30, at the Waiting Room Lounge in Omaha, NE with Michael Elgin headlining.
    • Kevin Doane talks to the Two Man Power Trip of Wrestling. On the Spirit Squad gimmick and trying to make the main roster: “Eventually The Spirit Squad started coming about and they started liking it. They flew us into one of the Carolinas and they weren’t sure about it then. So we all came up with this idea that we are going to wait in Vince’s office and when he comes in we are going to blow the air horn in his face and do a cheer. We thought you either going to get fired or it will work. We don’t want to be in developmental so he was stuck in the production meeting for quite a while so we said let’s find him and break in. So we bust into the production meeting and blow the air horn, we did a big cheer and we just kind of stopped in our position and Vince looked up and he said ‘great, you will be on RAW next week.’”

    TODAY’S DAILY UPDATE

Dwayne Johnson officially announced he would be at WrestleMania this year.  He said he was coming to set the all-time attendance record and make history.  Because of his filming the “Baywatch” movie, it was unclear if he could get the time off.  We had been told before it would be difficult, but not impossible, for him to wrestle on the show due to an issue related to insurance from one of the movies he’s doing but we will check if that has changed.

Want to make mention of the sad news today of the death of Harry Simon, a longtime reader and huge fan who contributed trivia column for this site years ago.  Simon passed away on Friday due to suicide, a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He had lost his father one year ago on the same day as well as another close family member and had battled depression along with other painful physical problems over the past year.  He was 40.  He used to love to tell people he thought he was the only person ever to write for both the Wrestling Observer and Pro Wrestling Illustrated.   Harry Simon had a wish that his friends could all get together on a date in January for a gathering.  If anyone is interested in attending the Harry Simon Memorial, please e-mail Joyce Katz at joyceworley1@cox.net  Simon was big into pro wrestling and comic books.

John Cena was a guest host on The Today show this morning, and will be on the show again tomorrow.   His segments are HERE and HERE

Shinsuke Nakamura was announced today by ROH as appearing on its anniversary weekend shows on 2/26 and 2/27 in Las Vegas at Sam’s Town.  The 2/26 show, which will feature a number of New Japan stars (Kushida and Gedo have been announced, the Observer has also listed several other names) will be on PPV.

A Wall Street Journal article on the year in review has Ronda Rousey in the headline of the story of 2015 as The Year of Ronda, The Royals and a Horse.

    RIZIN

The press conference was held earlier today for the Rizin debut show which takes place tonight/tomorrow morning at the Saitama Super Arena.  We’ve got weigh-in weights at the top.  Sakuraba, who is 46, hasn’t won a fight since 2009, but because of his fame, is the headliner.  Another ex-pro wrestling star, Tsuyoshi Kosaka, comes out of a nearly decade in retirement.  James Thompson, his opponent, weighed in at 291 pounds.  All the fighters on both tonight’s show and the New Year’s Eve show were at the press conference except Bob Sapp and Jerome LeBanner.  Sapp is in Japan and there are no problems indicated.  The word we got is that LeBanner is not in Japan and may not be showing up at all.   LeBanner is scheduled to face Baruto on the New Year’s Eve show.  It’s something to follow up on.

    WWE

    • Paul Levesque today announced a 1/16 afternoon show at 1 p.m. for NXT in Chicago at the Portage Theater.  They had already sold the theater out for an evening show that night.  Tickets go on sale at Noon Central time on Wednesday.  They will probably go quickly.
    • Alberto Del Rio at yesterday’s show in Hartford was wearing a completely new outfit and had new ring music.  His tights were described as looking like the old Demolition tights with fake spikes and long pants.
    • Ratings won’t be out until Wednesday this week due to the holidays.  It should be noted that there is a strong NFL game tonight with the Broncos vs. the Bengals.  But WWE is loading the show up with returns of both John Cena and Vince McMahon.  It also should be the start of the build for the Royal  Rumble show.
    • WWE stock closed down 12 cents a share to $18.65 today.
    • Dwayne Johnson bought his “Uncle Tonga,” the former Haku, a truck as a Christmas present this year.

    • Lio Rush was announced for the ROH Top Prospect tournament which starts on 1/9 in Concord, NC.
    • CBS Sunday morning in a Hail and Farewell segments on celebrities who had passed away this year, listed former Roller Derby star Annis “Big Red” Jensen, although none of the major wrestling names.  They also showed 15 seconds of black and white footage of her skating.  It’s notable because while she was one of the top stars in the 50 and early 60s, the biggest Derby star ever, Charlie O’Connell, passed away a few months later and got shockingly little press, although in reality, we had a bigger story on Jensen than O’Connell, but that was because very quickly after O’Connell’s death, huge wrestling stars had passed away.

    TODAY’S DAILY UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back with Wrestling Observer radio tonight talking the latest wrestling and MMA news as well as taking your e-mail questions to mailbag@wrestlingobserver.com

As noted yesterday, Vince McMahon will return for a continuation of his angle with Roman Reigns on Raw tomorrow.  I guess they felt with a big football game, they needed Vince back.

There was another misfire on Friday night on iPPV, this time being the CMLL show from Arena Mexico.  Based on what we were told, some people who ordered early and used a Chrome brower got in, but nobody else did.  About an hour into the show, CMLL issued a statement saying the problem was the provider’s and not theirs, and gave a YouTube link for the show.  If you ordered the show you’ll get this coming Friday’s second iPPV for half price.  The show has Negro Casas vs. Super Parka in a hair vs. hair match and Kamaitachi vs. Maximo in a hair vs. hair match.

The movie Daddy’s Home where John Cena has a cameo is projected at doing $38.8 million in its opening weekend, No. 2 behind Star Wars at $153.5 million.  Sisters, in its second week, which Cena is also in, is at No. 4 at $13.88 million.  Concussion, which debuted Friday, is projected to do $11 million at No. 6.

The New York Times end of year obit on Roddy Piper – This is a video of Piper’s babyface turn in Georgia Championship Wrestling.  Some great work here by Piper, Don Muraco, Ole Anderson and Gordon Solie

From probably 34 years ago, seasons greetings from Gordon Solie and the gang at Georgia Championship Wrestling.  See how many of the wrestlers you can recognize.

    WWE

    • Nikki Bella on Twitter wrote that “End of January I will know my destiny…Till then..All I can do is…stay fearless.  This is in relation to the neck injury she’s been rehabbing of late.  At the end of January she’ll find out if she needs neck surgery for bulging discs in her neck.
    • Stardust, who had been out with a neck injury, returned last night at Madison Square Garden against Titus O’Neil.
