  • John Cena’s American Grit least watched show of the big 4 networks

The debut of “American Grit,” the reality show hosted by John Cena, did not make a ratings splash last night.

The show was the least watched show of the four major networks last night, doing 2.43 million viewers and an 0.8 rating in the key 18-49 demo.  Of the major broadcast networks, it only beat out the CW programming for the night.  Of the four broadcast network shows going head-to-head, the lowest rated in the time slot was NBC, which ran The Blacklist doing 6.56 million viewers and a 1.3 in the demo.  The highest rated was Grey’s Anatomy on ABC which did 7.97 million viewers and a 2.2 rating in the demo.

The other bad news for the show is that it barely did half the audience of its lead in, Bones, which did 4.36 million viewer and a 0.9 in the demo.

  • Ratings back to normal levels for WWE RAW

WWE Raw last night fell back to the expected normal numbers the week after WrestleMania with 3.52 million viewers.

Last week’s show did 4.08 million viewers, but the day after WrestleMania is usually very strong.  The drop would be expected.

The number is along the lines of what the show has been doing since football season ended.  Of the 12 previous shows this year that didn’t go against football, last night’s show beat out five of them and was below seven of them.

There was a different ratings pattern as the show started with a low first hour, but had a good second hour before dropping somewhat in the third hour.

Raw was the highest rated show on cable last night, with The O’Reilly Factor on FOX News in second place at 3.04 million viewers.

Dancing With The Stars, which featured UFC’s Paige VanZant, was the most-watched show on television last night with 12.51 million viewers.

The three hours of Raw were:

    • 8 p.m. 3.47 million viewers
    • 9 p.m. 3.69 million viewers
    • 10 p.m. 3.43 million viewers
  • Raw ratings for the go-home WrestleMania show

The final Raw before WrestleMania did 3.77 million viewers, an 11 percent increase from near historical lows for non-football season posted for the show on 3/21 from Philadelphia.

A show that advertised every major character from WrestleMania appearing, including Vince McMahon, Undertaker, Brock Lesnar and Shane McMahon, from the Barclays Center, was down 10 percent from the WrestleMania go-home show last year which did a 3.03 rating and 4.19 million viewers. The 2014 go-home show did a 3.18 rating and 4.38 million viewers.

The ratings pattern was in line with the daylight savings time season, where the peak was in the second hour. There was a third hour drop, but it wasn’t as pronounced as many weeks, even though the only thing pushed for the end of the show was a segment involving HHH and Roman Reigns, who had already done two segments earlier in the show.

    The three hours were:

    8 p.m. 3.82 million viewers
    9 p.m. 3.85 million viewers
    10 p.m. 3.64 million viewers

Next week’s show is likely to be the highest rated Raw of the year, as that is the usual pattern for the day after WrestleMania. It is usually about two weeks after WrestleMania where the ratings settle into what ends up being the usual spring levels.

  • Strong third hour saves WWE Raw rating

The Monday, March 14th edition of WWE RAW was saved from being the least watched episode of the show outside of holidays and football season by an unusually strong third hour.

That third hour, which featured WWE Champion HHH vs. Dolph Ziggler in a non-title singles match, and a final segment with Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon and The Undertaker, ended up as the most watched hour of the show when it has evolved into the hour in which the audience drops greatly. This was the first time since the July 27, 2015 edition RAW (Seth Rollins challenging John Cena for the US title) where the third hour was the highest rated of the night.

The show did 3.46 million viewers, down two percent from the prior week. It was also down 12% from the 3.94 million the show did for the same week last year as the recent trend of RAW being down around 10% year over year continues.

It beat only the 2/1 show for the lowest since 1997 outside of football season and holidays. The opening hour was the least viewed 8 PM hour for the show since football season and the lowest rated non football/holiday number since the Monday Night Wars.

In good news, RAW was still the second most watched show on cable behind the O’Reilly Factor. In the 18-49 demo that advertisers covet, the three hours were the top rated cable shows by a considerable margin at 1.36 for 10:00 1.25 for 9:00 and 1.22 for the 8:00 hour respectively. The fourth place show was Better Call Saul at 0.81.

Household rating for the show was 2.51, down 3% from last year’s 2.59 and 8% from the Mar 16, 2015 RAW, which did a 2.73.

Part of the shift is also daylight savings time as historically people start the show later and stay longer when the time changes.

    The three hours were:

    • 8 p.m. 3.471 million viewers
    • 9 p.m. 3.392 million viewers
    • 10 p.m. 3.51 million viewers
  • Kurt Angle’s TNA farewell does all-time low rating

The end of Kurt Angle week was not a ratings hit for TNA, as the combined audience for the two airings was the lowest to date for Impact.

The final show of the U.K. tapings, built around Angle vs. Bobby Lashley, did 222,000 viewers at 9 p.m. and another 58,000 viewers at midnight.

The midnight viewership was the lowest to date.  The previous lowest combined audience was 297,000 viewers two weeks ago.

The 9 p.m. show was down 14 percent from the prior week, also built around Angle in a match with Bobby Roode.  The midnight show was down 15 percent from the prior all-time low was 68,000.

Impact returns next Tuesday with the first show of a new set of tapings in Orlando, FL.  The episode will be taped two hours before it is broadcast.

  • RAW drops to normal non-football levels despite heavy McMahon presence

Even with the McMahon family storyline, Raw moved back into normal non-football territory with 3.54 million viewers, down five percent from last week.

The audience total was also down about 8 percent from the same week last year as the March 9, 2015 edition did 3.86 million viewers. The 3.54 million should equate to a rating between 2.45 and 2.5, which is down from the 2.63 that last week’s show and the 2.85 the show did last year.

This week’s show also returned to the normal pattern with a declining audience throughout the show and the big third hour drop.

It was the highest rated show on cable for last night, beating Major Crimes on TBS which did 3.49 million viewers and The O’Reilly Factor on Fox News at 3.32 million viewers. The three hours of RAW were also the top 3 rated programs in the highly desirable 18-49 demo, doing 1.29, 1.27 and 1.23 respectively. The 3rd hour was percentage points ahead of the 4th rated program, Love and Hip Hop.

    Viewership totals for each hour:

    8 p.m. 3.76 million viewers
    9 p.m. 3.61 million viewers
    10 p.m. 3.28 million viewers

  • TNA Impact rating up from last week, Kurt Angle’s farewell tour

Tuesday night Impact wrestling on Pop TV, with a main event of Kurt Angle continuing his retirement tour against Bobby Roode, saw the rating increase from last week’s record low but it was still the third lowest number since Impact’s move to Pop TV.

The first airing of the show, at 9 pm, did 258,000 viewers, up 23% from the Lockdown show last Tuesday and 1% from the Pop TV debut on January 5th.

The midnight replay was down to 68,000 viewers, the lowest replay number to date and the combined total of 326,000 was up 10% from last week’s record low.

The 2016 average is now 282,500 for the first run shows, down 14.4% from the 330,320 the show averaged during it’s run on Destination America in 2015. This was the fifth straight week that the show has done under 300,000 viewers after a high water mark of 339,000 on January 25th.

The Kurt Angle Farewell Tour and Kurt Angle’s TNA career comes to an end next week.  The main event and Kurt’s final match in TNA will see him face “The Destroyer”, Lashley.  TNA Tag Champs The Wolves will also defend their title against Beer Money.

  • Shane McMahon helps ratings stay strong for WWE RAW

Raw held up from last week’s stronger than usual numbers and remained the most watched show on cable last night.

WrestleMania season and the buzz from last week’s return of Shane McMahon led to a strong first hour.  There was a second hour drop, but the third hour, with the promise of revealing i HHH would face Dean Ambrose for the WWE title, was the second largest third hour since August, with very little drop from hour two. What’s notable is the third hour went 74 minutes, and usually a long overrun can hurt ratings because people don’t stay for the duration.

Raw did 3.71 million viewers, down just four percent from last weeks show which came the day after Fast Lane.

    The three hours were:

    8 p.m. 3.95 million viewers
    9 p.m. 3.66 million viewers
    10 p.m. 3.55 million viewers

The second most watched show was the O’Reilly Factor on Fox News which did 3.56 million viewers.

  • RAW ratings down, still the top rated show on cable

Raw on Monday night going against the Grammy Awards did not set a record seasonal low, as it did 3.46 million viewers, up from the 3.37 million record low of two weeks ago.

It was still the second lowest number of the last 18 years that wasn’t a holiday or going against football.

It was down six percent from last week, but that has to be considered a good sign overall, since last week didn’t nearly the competition, and featured the Daniel Bryan retirement.  The Grammys on CBS did 24,951,000 viewers on average head-to-head.

Raw was the top rated show on cable for the night.

    The three hours were:

    8 p.m. 3.66 million viewers
    9 p.m. 3.54 million viewers
    10 p.m. 3.23 million viewers

  • RAW ratings delayed, expectations are low due to Grammy Awards

Due to President’s Day, the Monday night ratings will be delayed until some time tomorrow.

Ratings are expected tomorrow in the early afternoon.

Raw is not expected to pull a good number, even though they are coming off a stronger than usual number for the Daniel Bryan retirement show the previous week.  Between a main event of Big Show vs Braun Strowman and going head-to-head with the Grammy Awards, and several shows that have hit seasonal 17 year lows, it doesn’t look good.  The only thing that could save it is if there was lingering interest from the show the week before.

The preliminary numbers for the Grammy Awards on CBS were just under 24 million viewers, making it among the most-watched non-football shows of the past year.
