  • The Rock has arrived in Dallas

Dwayne Johnson arrived late last night in Dallas to start preparation for WrestleMania.

Johnson’s role on the show has not been announced and on Twitter he noted that last night at 2 a.m. he was in the stadium still working on what he was doing on the show.

Johnson wrote on twitter: “2 a.m. and still working on the show.  Tomorrow night this stadium will be filled with 100,000 strong.  what a night we have planned.”

Johnson has been working on the “Baywatch” movie but committed to the show publicly months ago.  For insurance reasons, he wasn’t able to wrestle a match on the show as he and HHH one year ago was scheduled to be one of the main events.

At one point it looked like it was going to be difficult to even be a part of the show due to the filming of “Baywatch,” but he was able to make that happen.

It was noted to us a few weeks ago when most of the plans for the show were being formulated that Johnson was going to do what he wanted to do, and at the time he hadn’t told the company yet exactly what his plans were.

  • February 8, 1999 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Giant Baba passes away

The death of any major pro wrestling figure makes one reflect upon the past. But the death of Shohei Baba will likely have repercussions far more telling about the future, and in ways that nobody at this point can predict.

More than the death of a wrestling superstar or a legendary promoter, of which he was both and a lot more, his death spells the end of the major chapter in Japanese wrestling history, of which he was one of the two main participants. And his death leaves in question the future of the old style of wrestling, with lengthy main events, clean winners and losers, finishing moves that work against the top stars, of which his company was the lone holdover, and the beginning of a new chapter in the Japanese wrestling world. What it will turn into and how it will get there is far more difficult to examine than what it was and will probably never be again.

  • The Rock leads to huge WWE RAW ratings

The combination of the day after the Royal Rumble and the appearance of Dwayne Johnson led Raw to huge numbers last night, averaging 4.09 million viewers over the three hours, up 18 percent from the prior week.

For a comparison, the new audience brought in by the usual Rumble bump and curiosity of where that leads saw hour one up 10 percent from last week, so that’s roughly what Raw could have been expected to do, or slightly more because last week did have that bad third hour, as compared to last week without The Rock. Where The Rock helped the numbers is that hours two (where he appeared in the last few minutes) and three (where he appeared in the first few minutes) help up far better than usual, and hour two outdrew hour one, a rarity these days.

Still, last year’s post-Rumble Raw did 4.41 million viewers and a 3.27 rating for a studio show where they replayed the Rumble itself due to the blizzard.

    The three hours were:

    8 p.m. 4.14 million viewers
    9 p.m. 4.18 million viewers
    10 p.m. 3.97 million viewers
