  • Makhachev fails USADA drug test, fight against Drew Dober canceled

Yet another fight was eliminated from what has become a snake-bit UFC show on FOX tomorrow.

The Islam Makhachev vs. Drew Dober fight is off because shortly after weigh-ins, UFC was informed by USADA that Makhachev had a potential anti-doping violation involving Meldonium, which is listed as of this year as a banned performance enhancing agent.

Meldonium was developed clinically for heart ailments like angina, but like insulin, was discovered to have performance enhancing properties.  Like Insulin, it has been listed since the start of the year as a banned Metabolic Modulator.  It is the same drug the tennis star Maria Sharapova was recently suspended for.

This marks the second fight on the show in the last three days to be canceled due to the anti-doping policy, the other being the Lyoto Machida vs. Dan Henderson fight, as Machida was suspended for admitting usage of a substance that he didn’t realize was on the banned list which contained DHEA.

Last week the scheduled main event with Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson full through due to a training injury suffered by Ferguson.

The news was first reported by Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting and confirmed by a UFC release tonight.

  • UFC’s Diego Brandao tests positive for marijuana

Diego Brandao, who lost to Brian Ortega via third round submission in a fight he was dominating up to that point at UFC 195 on 1/2 in Las Vegas, tested over the limits for marijuana in a USADA test taken the day of the show.

The UFC announced today that they were informed by USADA of a potential violation for marijuana by Brandao.

The test was over the WADA limit of 180 ng/ml for THC.  The Nevada limit is 150 ng/ml.

This would be Brandao’s first drug test failure.

Brandao won season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter in 2011, but has had an up and down career in the UFC, posting a 6-4 record, with two of his losses coming at the hands of Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor.

  • Yoel Romero facing possible suspension for drug test failure

Yoel Romero, who was a possible next contender for UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold, is facing a possible drug test suspension.

The UFC announced that they were notified today by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) of a potential violation stemming from a Romero sample collected out of competition. The UFC noted that USADA will, independent of UFC, handle the results and punishment stemming from the case.

No specific drug was named in the story, nor has there been punishment announced.  It appears from previous cases that UFC is notified of a failed test, but the fighter is allowed to ask for a B sample to be tested before the offense will be publicly noted and any punishment would be dispensed.

Romero won a controversial decision over Rolando “Jacare” Souza at UFC 194 in Las Vegas in a fight that was to determine the next challenger for the title. But most felt either Souza deserved the win, or it should have been a draw, so Romero was never announced as getting the next title shot.
