  • WWE Cruiserweight Classic gets debut date, announcing team

    The Wednesday night wrestling block will get a bit more crowded this summer as WWE announced that the much-anticipated WWE Cruiserweight Classic will debut on the Network starting Wednesday, July 13th at 9 PM EST, airing for 10 weeks through a live two-hour finale on Wednesday, September 15th.

    Current Smackdown lead man Mauro Ranallo and former WWE Champion Daniel Bryan were announced as “hosts” for the Classic, but we confirmed they are indeed calling the action.

    Also announced was a preview special — CWC Bracketology — for Wednesday, July 6th at 9 PM EST where we should get the actual tournament brackets and all 16 first round match matchups.

    The Classic will feature 32 talents (some under WWE contract & some not) from around the world in a single-elimination tournament including Zack Sabre Jr., Gran Metalik, Noam Dar, Kota Ibushi, Rich Swann, Akira Tozawa, Johnny Gargano, Cedric Alexander, Tommaso Ciampa, and more.   • Wrestling Weekly: Daniel Bryan Documentary, Foley & Galloway, Mania Picks

    It’s Wrestlemania weekend and there are so many options for wrestling fans this weekend that you almost can’t keep track of it all!  Les and Vic start this edition of Wrestling Weekly talking about how great it is to have so many options, then move into discussing Daniel Bryan (8:16) being removed from all WWE related appearances and his request for time off.  Perhaps the new documentary on Bryan airing on WWE Network has a clue or two as to why he made that request.  Vic has a theory he’ll float about a combination of circumstances that might have been the cause.  From there, we’ll discuss recent comments from both Drew Galloway and Mick Foley (23:34) regarding WWE creative and speaking up about what you’re given.  They’re not talking about exactly the same things, but there might be an interesting parallel or two there.  The New Day are inducting the Freebirds into the HOF, which got Les and a friend talking about why Kevin Von Erich wasn’t asked and that conversation left Les feeling like he needed to vent a bit (37:18).  We’ll wrap the show with our Wrestlemania predictions (47:13).  Hope you enjoy all the great wrestling this weekend and thanks for listening~!

  • WWE NYC live results: Reigns & Ambrose vs. HHH & Sheamus headline not-so Daniel Bryan appreciation night

    Editor’s note: This was the show that was scheduled to be Daniel Bryan Appreciation Night, but was changed last minuted because of Bryan “asking for time off”.

    – Dolph Ziggler def. The Miz

    Superkick and pin, in a fast paced back and forth opener. 

    – U.S. Champion Kalisto def. Rusev (w/Lana) 

    The finish was Rusev taking padding off the turnbuckle, throwing Kalisto into it, who then jumped up to use the Salido Del Sol finisher for the win.

    After the match, Ryback came out and attacked Kalisto. Sin Cara ran in to make the save. Ryback returned to grab the microphone, and said that Kalisto and Sin Cara need to understand that a big man beats a little man every time and wanted a match with Sin Cara right now.

    – Ryback def. Sin Cara

    ShellShock and pin in under 3 minutes. No offense by Sin Cara.

    – Becky Lynch & Sasha Banks def. Naomi and Tamina

    Banks beat Naomi with a back stabber followed by the Banks Statement submission. Standard divas fare.

    – Big Show & Kane def. Erick Rowan & Bray Wyatt (w/Braun Strowman)

    Show uses knockout punch on Rowan. Kane, the legal man, used a chokeslam to get the pin. Fans were into the match. Wyatt looked good, and had strong offense on Show. Strowman interfered a few times along the way. 

    – Divas Champion Charlotte (with Ric Flair) def. Natalya in a non-title match

    Charlotte rolled her up after a distraction on the apron from Ric.

    – After this match, a special ring announcer for the next match was introduced: former WWE broadcaster and current ESPN on-air talent Jonathan Coachman.

    Coachman said that he was asked to come back to WWE, and wanted to do it at MSG. He then wanted to introduce his friends, the Dudleyz. Dudleyz came to the ring, and Coachman said a number of fans had a question for them: “Where are the tables?” Bubba Ray became incensed, threatened Coachman; and out came the Usos.

    – WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day (Xavier Woods & Big E) w/Kofi def. The Dudley Boyz and The Usos in a triple threat to retain the titles.

    After all six were involved at the end, Xavier came off the top rope onto Devon for the pin. Long match, but pretty good. Fans were into New Day who got a face pop coming in and leaving. After the match, Coachman jumped back into the ring with New Day, took off his shirt to reveal a New Day shirt underneath, and danced with them.

    – I-C Champion Kevin Owens def. AJ Styles to retain.

    Finish was a pop-up power bomb and pin after an excellent wrestling clinic. Styles was well received, as was Owens. Match was full of good moves and counter moves. Crowd was getting tired, but still clearly into the match. Loads of classic Styles moves. Best match of the night. After the match, Owens wanted to attack Styles again, who of course tossed him around, Styles then took the mic to thank the fans and say that the Madison Square Garden atmosphere is everything that he has always heard about it.

    – Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose def. WWE Champion HHH & Sheamus

    Reigns pinned Sheamus with a sphere for the win. He got a mixed reaction coming in, although a little more cheers than boos. During the match, he was cheered once at a hot tag, but booed heavily hitting Sheamus, and another sequence against HHH. Ambrose got a huge reaction coming in. HHH also got a face reaction coming in. HHH at first didn’t want to face Reigns, but did come in when tagged to attack him. Good match overall. 

    Notes:

    – The show lasted 3:30 including intermission. The crowd began tiring out by last two matches. However, they were still into them both.

  • Daniel Bryan will not be appearing at MSG, ceremony postponed

    Daniel Bryan will not be appearing on Friday for what was scheduled as Daniel Bryan night in Madison Square Garden and there are reports we are awaiting confirmation on that indicate this is not limited to just the Madison Square Garden.

    Several ticket holders for Friday night’s show were contacted today with a letter from Madison Square Garden stating:

    “Due to a scheduling conflict, the ceremony to honor former WWE world heavyweight champion Daniel Bryan on March 25, 2016 has been postponed.

    While this honoring may occur at a later date, WWE Live–Road to WrestleMania this Friday at Madison Square Garden will still take place as scheduled.  The event will feature many of your favorite WWE Superstars.  After nearly 5 years, Triple H return to action in the ring in the world’s most famous arena, Madison Square Garden.  Also see Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose, Ric Flair, Sheamus, A.J. Styles, Bray Wyatt, Kevin Owens and many more!

    We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and look forward to your continued support of the WWE and Madison Square Garden.”

    UPDATE: WWE officials have said that Danielson has requested time off and it was granted.

  • Undertaker, Daniel Bryan join WWE’s post-Wrestlemania European tours

    In an effort to increase the star power of the April post-WrestleMania tours of Europe, WWE announced that the recently-retired Daniel Bryan and The Undertaker would be heading to each be part of one leg.

    It had already been announced that there would be a Daniel Bryan Appreciation Night in London, one of many such events happening in the months ahead, one of which is happening at NYC’s Madison Square Garden on March 25th.

    While that will be a big draw on one tour, Shane McMahon’s opponent for Wrestlemania has been added for the other tour, actually wrestling on the shows. No opponent has been announced yet.

    Previously, the two tours were announced as being headlined by Roman Reigns vs. Sheamus on one tour and I-C champion Kevin Owens vs. Dean Ambrose on the other tour. Reader Tom Griffiths said that for the first show, the lineup is listed as Bray Wyatt vs. Roman Reigns, New Day vs. Rusev & Sheamus, and Kane, Strowman, Becky, Sasha, Charlotte (w/ Flair), Usos, Dudleys, Jack Swagger, Rowan, Neville, Stardust, Sin Cara & Tyler Breeze.

    The tour dates for the Wrestlemania Revenge tour is as follows:

    • Saturday, 16 April, 7:30 p.m.: Barclaycard Arena, Birmingham, England
    • Sunday, 17 April, 5 p.m.: Nottingham Capital FM Arena, Nottingham, England

  • One Year Later: WWE Fastlane 2015 – Daniel Bryan vs. Roman Reigns

    With the second-ever WWE Fastlane Sunday night, what better time to look at the state of WWE one year ago than by watching last year’s show? This is a read-a-long to be enjoyed while watching said WWE PPV on the WWE Network…or the DVD if you’re still buying those. 

    It’s interesting to look and see the positioning of guys on the card one year ago. As you may recall, the main event was a match between Daniel Bryan and Roman Reigns. It’s sad to think that the recently retired Bryan was at the top of his game just a year ago — positioned as the guy to get Reigns over for his main event at Wrestlemania 31. 

    Let’s go back to February 22nd at the FedEx Forum in Memphis, TN, and look at the main talking points from each match.

    The Authority (Seth Rollins/Kane/Big Show) w/Jamie Noble and Joey Mercury vs. Dolph Ziggler, Erick Rowan, and Ryback

    • What a team of babyfaces. The reaction to Rowan was non-existent.
    • This was a fine match, but nothing special because nobody cares about anyone in this mix. Dolph got the mild tag from Ryback, and went wild until Big Show KO’d Ziggler and Kane pinned him.
    • Show’s punch was replayed in slow motion which showed how obviously Ziggler jumped into it. Hilarious.
    • Seth hit the curb stomp on Zig post match to get their heat back, until Randy Orton ran in and cleaned house. RKOs out of everywhere!

    Stardust vs. Goldust

    • Finally the match between the Rhodes brothers nobody asked for!
    • Dusty was shown giving Goldust a pep talk before the match which was pretty cool.
    • Remember Cody’s new body from five years ago? He wrestled this match shirtless. My guess is that it was shortly after this match where big brother grabbed little brother’s ear and revealed to him the secret of longevity in wrestling: the full body suit. “It’s great, Cody. You never have to work out or tan or eat good. Sure you have to scrape paint flakes out of your eyes every morning, but look at me! I got Terri Runnels with this physique!”
    • This had a weird ending. Gold rolled up Star and the referee counted one, two, and then didn’t hit the mat for the three, but Star’s shoulders were definitely down for three and so the ref hopped up and said it was a three count and the match was over. I think the storyline was that the ref got paid off by Dusty to end the match early so that his sons would not get hurt. That, or they blew the finish.
    • Cody beat down Dustin after the match in front of the Dream.

    WWE Tag Team Champions The Usos (Jey and James) w/ Naomi vs. Tyson Kidd and Cesaro w/ Natalya

    • Facts. Cats. Those are the words on Kidd’s kick pads, because he likes cats AND drops facts. What a gimmick.
    • Cesaro and Kidd were so great. What awful luck for both of these guys lately. Get well soon!
    • Cesaro did a one-legged swing with an Uso. That is freaky impressive.
    • Kidd hooked in the Sharpshooter and got superkicked. Jimmy got the visual fall on Kidd as the action spilled outside. This match is getting good.
    • Then, just like that, it’s over. Kidd hits an Uso with a spinning fisherman buster and gets the pin, and the belts. Your new champions Tyson Kidd and Cesaro!
    • Kidd’s tan was Olympic level.

    HHH and Sting Face-to-Face

    • Remember this? Me neither. Boy, Sting dropped off the radar fast.
    • HHH cut a mighty promo, especially blowhardy today.
    • Sting came out and got face-to-face with The Game
    • HHH went for the cheap shot and it broke down into a brawl, leading to a sledgehammer vs. baseball bat standoff. The baseball bat won, for now.

    WWE Divas Champion Nikki Bella w/ Brie vs. Paige

    • Paige’s outfit is completely black here. Reebok probably designed it. I like the addition of the blue these days though.
    • Is the Divas Revolution done? Is everyone good and revolted? I haven’t heard that used in a while. Good thing too. WWE nomenclature is infuriating.
    • The crowd was absolutely dead for this match, and remember, this is mid Nikki’s record-breaking title reign.
    • Nikki won with a roll up and a handful of tights.

    WWE I-C Champion Bad News Barrett vs. Dean Ambrose

    • Barrett’s music is pretty cool. The League of Nations’ music suuuuuuuuuucks.
    • Dean Ambrose has the best gimmick. He gets to just show up and simply take off his shirt and he’s ready to wrestle. You know he wears those jeans everywhere, and he’s definitely a guy who really wears wife beater t-shirts. I’m wearing one now. It’s quite comfy. It’s pink too. #PinkLivesMatter #TeamViggity
    • Barrett is a good wrestler. He’s another guy who is really good but has had just terrible luck with injuries right when he was about to get pushed, along with Cesaro, Tyson Kidd, Sin Cara, etc.
    • Ambrose got DQ’d for using the belt. He laid Barrett out, got caught, got DQ’d, then walked off with the belt anyway. Ha!

    Unannounced, the Druids enter the arena. Then the gong hits. I think Glacier is making his debut! No. It’s a casket. Maybe Glacier is in the casket. Nope. It’s Bray Wyatt. Boooooooh.

    WWE US Champion Rusev w/ Lana vs. John Cena

    • Rusev just whipped up on old Johnny boy for a while.
    • Rusev should have shoes on, specifically the Iron Shiek’s shoes. That would be awesome. (I know they are different countries but who cares?)
    • People didn’t make a big enough deal about Cena getting away from jorts. That topic needed its own Observer issue. Why did he do it? I predict that within the next five years, jean shorts will come back in style.
    • They did the yay/boo spot. Rusev needs to start doing the ten punches in the corner spot and count in Russian. It would be amazing if he could get the fans to actually learn to count to ten in Russian.
    • Rusev and Cena exchange some submissions. Good action.
    • This was when Rusev was undefeated with like six losses on his record.
    • Rusev won by technical submission as Cena was passed out in the Accolade so lil Naitch rang the bell.
    • Cena did this hokey selling post match that got booed. Ha!

    Roman Reigns vs. Daniel Bryan to determine the number one contender to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

    • They had a dang good match.
    • I’m still not sure why Reigns is allowed to wear body armor. That seems like cheating.
    • I love JBL: “Don’t forget, I know stuff about old boxing.”
    • It’s a shame Bryan never did the “I’ve got til FIVE!” spot in WWE. I’ll bet Vince nixed that.
    • Huge belly to back off the top by Bryan into the Yes lock!
    • Both guys took idiotic bumps outside the ring for a long double down.
    • I can’t help but believe the crowd is going to be unhappy with this finish.
    • Bryan with the running knee!
    • I missed some of the match researching gambling odds on the Oscars.
    • Does anyone get a redder face than Mike Chioda?
    • Bryan did the Brie Mode kicks (wink).
    • Reigns hit a monster spear for the clean pin.
    • Bryan does the rude put over, getting in Reigns’ face and telling him he’d better kick his (Brock’s) buns.

    Summary:

    I really don’t like the Fastlane name. It was much better when Elimination Chamber was the February show. I know the argument against doing a gimmick show for the sake of the gimmick, but the Elimination Chamber was always a draw, and Fastlane sounds like some group think garbage that’s been polished over to make it appealing to everyone. That’s a mistake. The more polished something feels, the less real it feels, and thus we find it phony. I hope WWE takes notice of the Daniel Bryan retirement speech and realizes that fans connect to realness, but they probably won’t. 

  • Brie Bella says she expects to retire this summer

    Brianna Danielson, who wrestles as Brie Bella, may be the next WWE performer to retire.

    The wife of Bryan Danielson, who announced his retirement last week on Raw, expects to retire this summer, confirming a report in last week’s issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. The couple was on ABC’s Good Morning America today to discuss his retirement, when she said that her days were limited in wrestling.

    The report didn’t show a clip of her stating it on camera, but the summer time frame was part of the news story.

    “It’s time for me to hang up the boots,” she said. “That day is very close.”

    Bryan said that he wants to spend his time now educating young athletes to the seriousness of concussions. In the report, both Danielsons talked about Bryan’s seizures stating that he at first kept them from his wife and when he had one in front of her, implored her not to tell anyone for fear he would not be allowed to wrestle.

    It should be noted that Bryan Danielson’s last seizure was about four years ago and has not been a recent issue.

  • Figure Four Weekly 2/15/2016: A Farewell to Daniel Bryan

    It’s hard to explain just how much indie wrestling has changed if you weren’t around when it was different, but I’ll try. In the northeast, where indie wrestling as we know it today (as opposed to in general) was really born, it started as a replacement for WWF spot shows. When the national expansion went underway in 1984, all of the local promoters, from Tommy Dee to the Savoldi family, were left without anyone to book talent from. They started running their own shows with unaffiliated wrestlers to draw the same audience. Former WWF stars were usually the key main eventers, and the undercard would be filled with local trainees. Occasionally, a real talent would pop up and eventually make it. Someone like Ted Petty as Cheetah Kid would get attention for his high flying moves. But by and large, it was not really any kind of viable alternative the way, say, Japanese tapes were.

    Recapping the week

    Today is quite honestly a welcomed quiet weekend in the world of Pro Wrestling and MMA after a very long week.  To quickly recap the week: It all started with the retirement of Bryan Danielson from WWE that culminated with his WWE RAW Retirement speech.  In the aftermath of the Danielson speech Titus O’Neil was suspended for 90 days and then quickly reduced to 60 days for grabbing Vince McMahon during the closing of RAW’s broadcast on the WWE Network.  CM Punk’s UFC debut was delayed due to needing back surgery which was by all reports successful.  

    After publicly announcing his prostate cancer diagnosis and impending surgery last week, this week Bret Hart posted a positive message following his surgery.  We heard the sad news of UFC Legend and former Heavyweight champion Kevin Randleman passing away at 44.  In other said news Mark Nulty, wrestling historian, former announcer and the engine behind the Wrestling Classics website, also passed away.

    Raw will be Monday in Anaheim.  No Brock Lesnar or Paul Heyman on to the go-home show for Fast Lane.   Ticket sales picked up with the announcement of A.J. Styles, although I’m sure in management that will be passed off as pure coincidence, and maybe it is.  But this looks to be the first sellout of a Raw show this year.  It’s very close at this point and Anaheim is good walk-up market.

    Lesnar will make his first appearance on Smackdown since 2004 at the Tuesday tapings in Ontario, CA.
