  • DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Audio Show: WWE SummerSlam 1992 reviewed

****This is a free edition of the show. Please share!****

On this look back at WWF SummerSlam 1992, Karl watches and reviews the entire show: Shawn Michaels, Rick Martel, The Natural Disasters, The Beverly Brothers, The Undertaker, Kamala, The Ultimate Warrior, Ric Flair, Mr. Perfect, Randy Savage, The Legion of Doom, Money Inc, and the big main event of the British Bulldog vs. Bret Hart for the WWF Intercontinental title and the honor of the Hart family!

Full review of the show with the following matches:

    • The Legion of Doom vs. Money, Inc. (LOD split up after this show and Hawk goes AWOL.)
    • Nailz vs. Virgil. (Nailz thought this match was so good he later attacked Vince McMahon over the payoff.)
    • Shawn Michaels vs. Rick Martel in a heel vs heel match with the love of Sensational Sherri at stake.
    • The Natural Disasters vs. The Beverly Brothers with Lanny Poffo in what is, shockingly, the third best match on the show.
    • Neon Crush vs. Demolition Smash in a Lone Ranger mask.
    • Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage for the WWF title with Ric Flair and Mr. Perfect making the match worse.
    • The Undertaker in a mess against Kamala.
    • The British Bulldog vs. Bret Hart for the WWF Intercontinental title with one of the worst promos ever and a career performance by Hart.

  • Daily Update: Daniel Bryan, Mark Nulty, Bret Hart and Kevin Randleman

    Recapping the week

Today is quite honestly a welcomed quiet weekend in the world of Pro Wrestling and MMA after a very long week.  To quickly recap the week: It all started with the retirement of Bryan Danielson from WWE that culminated with his WWE RAW Retirement speech.  In the aftermath of the Danielson speech Titus O’Neil was suspended for 90 days and then quickly reduced to 60 days for grabbing Vince McMahon during the closing of RAW’s broadcast on the WWE Network.  CM Punk’s UFC debut was delayed due to needing back surgery which was by all reports successful.

After publicly announcing his prostate cancer diagnosis and impending surgery last week, this week Bret Hart posted a positive message following his surgery.  We heard the sad news of UFC Legend and former Heavyweight champion Kevin Randleman passing away at 44.  In other said news Mark Nulty, wrestling historian, former announcer and the engine behind the Wrestling Classics website, also passed away.

Sunday has WWE in Bakersfield,, CA (Chris Jericho, Bray Wyatt, Wyatt Family, Dudleys, Ryback, A.J. Styles, Kane, Natalya).

Raw will be Monday in Anaheim.  No Brock Lesnar or Paul Heyman on to the go-home show for Fast Lane.   Ticket sales picked up with the announcement of A.J. Styles, although I’m sure in management that will be passed off as pure coincidence, and maybe it is.  But this looks to be the first sellout of a Raw show this year.  It’s very close at this point and Anaheim is good walk-up market.

Lesnar will make his first appearance on Smackdown since 2004 at the Tuesday tapings in Ontario, CA.

The newest issue of the Wrestling Observer is one of the best of the year.  A very detailed look at the end of Bryan Danielson’s career and retirement. Looking back at sports, pro wrestling and the ramifications that are and are not being talked about.  Danielson’s retirement is a big story, both his short and long term impact on pro wrestling.  How his story will act as a catalyst for change not only within pro wrestling but all contact sports.  If you are a wrestling fan, a sports fan or a science fan, this may be the most important issue of the year.

Bryan Danielson’s retirement speech, career highlights, home town, character both in and out of the ring, booking, the crazy way he ended up as champion for the first time, the birth of the “Yes” chant, the build to WrestleMania 30 & 31, the various exams, why he wanted to continue wrestling and WWE didn’t, his goals outside of WWE and why he changed his mind in the last few weeks.

The quandary he was in about continuing his career, how his career began, the formation of ROH and the changing landscape of independent wrestling, the changing ideas of what a pro wrestling headliner can look like, the first time I ever saw him wrestle while sitting with Red Bastien and Nick Bockwinkel

The suspension of Titus O’Neil, a longtime WWE star talking about going into another sport, another star looking at retiring soon, lots of WrestleMania plans including an early summer major match, Steve Austin’s WrestleMania status, update on promotion of Stephanie McMahon, star who may be interested in returning, Fast Lane, A.J. Styles talks his beginnings in WWE and how hard he tried to hide the Royal Rumble story, how DDP figured in Styles’ return, Linda McMahon forms a new company, Roman Reigns in Raw main events, WWE cuts five in developmental, new WWE books. New announcer hired, Update on many Tough Enough competitors from the past season, plans for a WWE show taped this summer, international star WWE has interest in, as well as a look at all the weekend house shows from WWE & NXT with business notes.

“Surgery’s over and on the long road to recovery. I want to thank Dr. Hyndman and the nursing staff at Rocky View Hospital for an outstanding job. I also want to thank my family, friends and fans for all your love and support. Things are looking up and I should be home in the next couple of days. In the words of Vince McMahon: “It’s onwards and upwards.”

Hart was recovering from four-corner right wrist surgery which makes writing and typing very difficult.

  • DragonKingKarl Show: The death of Mark Nulty, pro wrestling historians, Canadian Wrestling

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Audio Show: Thinking About Mark Nulty and Classic Wrestling History. On this show I want to take a little time and reflect on the contributions of Wrestling Classics owner and former announcer Mark Nulty to the wrestling history community and just where does pro wrestling history stand? What are we still following wrestling for and what is it doing for us? Why are the demographics of wrestling skewed so old and why do wrestling promoters ignore it? We will follow up on a recent conversation between Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez on a recent Wrestling Observer Radio show and take a more detailed look at what it all means.  Then we will examine the biggest draws in wrestling history and talk about who the biggest draw in Canadian history might be and discuss names like Whipper Billy Watson, Gene Kiniski, Bret Hart, Yvon Robert, Roddy Piper, Bret Hart, and more.

  • Bret Hart reveals he has prostate cancer, makes statement

The following is a statement from Bret Hart:

“It is with great remorse that I feel compelled to speak truthfully to my friends, family and my millions of fans around the world. In the past few years, I’ve spent more than enough time paying the price for all those years trying to be the best there ever was as a professional wrestler. I executed excellently and my proudest claim was that I never seriously hurt or injured another wrestler in my 23 year career. I’ve paid a price for all that “fake” wrestling. Aside from a devastating career-ending concussion and numerous surgeries when I was younger, in recent years I’ve had two knee replacements, two hernia operations, surgery on my right elbow, and, just a few months ago, I underwent a four-corner fusion of my right wrist that even now makes it most difficult to write or type.

Mark Helprin wrote: “We are all perfect clocks that Divinity has set to ticking when, even before birth, the heart explodes into a lifelong dance.” I’ve had a great lifelong dance and I’m a survivor of many hard battles. I now face my toughest battle. With hesitation and fear, I openly declare myself in my fight against prostate cancer. In the next few days, I will undergo surgery with the hope of defeating this nemesis once and for all.

My fans have always looked upon me as a hero and I’ve always done my best to live up to that in and out of the ring. I beat the odds when I suffered my stroke in 2002,  but it is now yet again, that I draw upon the many adults and young children I’ve met throughout my life who courageously fought and usually lost in their battles against this deadly disease. One year ago, I watched a brave young man named Whesley fight brain cancer to the end. If I can find even an ounce of his courage to stand unafraid and face the tough road ahead of me, I will march toward this destiny with his spirit chanting in my ear.

I make a solemn vow to all of those that once believed in me, the dead and the living, that I will wage my fearsome fight against cancer with one shield and one sword carrying my determination and my fury for life, emboldened by all the love that’s kept me going this long already. Love is my weapon and I’ve got much of it around me all the time, for which I’m truly blessed and eternally grateful. My children, grandchildren, and my loving wife Steph have been and will constantly be at my side. I refuse to lose, I will never give in or give up, and I will win this battle or die trying.

Most important of all, I hope I can take the fight to prostate cancer. To be a leader in awareness and to set the example for men everywhere who find themselves in my very same shoes, that prostate cancer can be beaten.

    – B x”

  • Dec 21, 1998 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Wrestling With Shadows set to air, Rock Bottom PPV review, plus tons more

More than one year after the actual event took place, it appears that the U.S. air date of the “Hitman Hart: Wrestling with Shadows” hopefully, Vince McMahon willing since half his booking ideas seem to come from attempts to gain some sort of personal retribution, will finally put closure to what without question will go down as the most famous ending of a match in North American history.

Bret Hart is among the leading candidates to be the pro wrestler of this decade. He’s one of the best in-ring performers of this generation. Vince McMahon, is the most successful wrestling promoter ever, and from a historical standpoint is probably the most important one of all-time, although some would argue the latter point. Yet for all of Hart’s great matches and all of McMahon’s business accomplishments, the defining moment in both men’s professional lives and possibly even what both will over the long haul most be remembered for, at least personally, is chronicled in this movie.

The documentary, which aired last month in Canada, and airs from 9-11 p.m. on the A&E Network on 12/20, has gotten unanimously positive reviews from every media source in North America that has reviewed it, which is amazing given the subject of the movie is pro wrestling. Certainly that is a first for any movie on pro wrestling, or even with a theme revolving around pro wrestling. The version of the movie on television will be the “Child Friendly” videotape version, with some language edits from the original version.
