  • WWE RAW Hits & Misses: DTA Ambrose, Weak Wyatts and People Power!

Monday night’s post-Money in the Bank edition of WWE RAW certainly had its moments including the new World Heavyweight champion Dean Ambrose grabbing the spotlight impressively and Big “Johnny Laryngitis” (thanks, Enzo) making his glorious return. As always however, those diamonds were surrounded by a lot of rough spots too.

    — The Hits —

    DTA Ambrose

While it’s probably too early to tell, Monday’s RAW showed encouraging signs that the WWE may see Dean Ambrose as more than just a transitional champion. Ambrose was given ample opportunity to play to his strengths, demonstrating his natural line delivery in the opening segment and shining on commentary at the end of the show.

While his in-ring work remains a frantic and often sloppy work-in-progress, Ambrose’s bountiful charisma, paired with a new harder edge to his character, makes him a very realistic candidate for the role of top babyface. That added grit, which saw Dean back up his threats to take out Roman Reigns if necessary, must remain if the transition from upper-midcarder to main eventer is to stick. “Stone Cold” Steve Austin wasn’t exactly too interested in making friends or being wacky either.

    Fight Forever

No, I’m not referring to the en vogue crowd chant. Rather, the seemingly neverending beef between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, complete with the always hilarious, and cartoonish, fist-flailing dust-ups.

Although only five minutes aired, the match between these two, who the announcers again claimed are “destined to fight forever”, was a very enjoyable taster for what will presumably be a rubber match at Battleground. The finish, with Zayn reversing the Pop-Up Powerbomb into a cradle, was particularly enjoyable.

    Angry Dad

I’ve been as critical of the paint-by-numbers Rusev/Titus O’Neil feud as anyone, but Monday night’s resumption of hostilities between the two was a major improvement.

Titus’ impassioned backstage hollering about the Bulgarian having the temerity to disrespect his kids was excellent, ensuring that the former Prime Time Player actually received a reaction for running off the US champion for a change. While I’m not crazy about the idea of another PPV match for a guy that has no business working matches of that calibre, one must award credit where it’s due.

    People Power!

Recent unsolicited auditions of Teddy Long and Kane for the role of Smackdown general manager were both leading to this glorious moment — the return of John “Big Johnny” Laurinaitis. Hearing the hoarse one protest that “Big Johnny loves change!” was music to my ears, as was his hurried “People Power!” before Shane McMahon ushered him off the stage. What a preview for those of us literally counting the days to his debut on Total Bellas.

    — The Misses —

    The Apology Club

Following on from the crummy finish to their match on Sunday, everything about the Cena/AJ Styles dispute fell completely flat on this show.

While AJ’s promo delivery remains great, the material he, Cena and The Club had to work with was wafer-thin, centering mostly around an insincere Styles looking to extract an “apology” from his buddies. Cena of course rejected it, but not in nearly as brief a manner as might be expected. The subsequent 3-minute encounter between he and Karl Anderson was also terrible, with Cena making his opponent look like a geek by destroying him despite gawking at the entrance ramp the entire time. Weak.

    Rollins’ characterisation (again)

Seriously?! Let’s get this straight — Seth Rollins works the Money in the Bank main event as a babyface, reverts to whiny heel mode in Monday’s opening segment, and then cuts a rousing “prove myself” promo in the second hour!? The characterisation of The Man/The Future is even more inconsistent than that of his former leader Stephanie McMahon at this stage.

The kind of predictability we saw in his plodding main event against Reigns — complete with Chekhov’s (unbreakable) Spanish announce table and obvious double countout finish — would be very welcome here.

“Oooh, the Wyatts are mad at me. I’m so scared! Oooh, the Wyatts!”

The Wyatts, sans the injured Luke Harper, made their return on Monday night, threatening to ensure that “New Day Falls”. Colour me underwhelmed. The fun-loving New Day should be too, given that Bray Wyatt and co. have delivered on precisely zero of their threats to date.

In fact, it’s difficult to think of a non-jobber heel group with a lower success rate than these jamokes. Hey, at least our tag champs’ interruption prevented us from enduring some of Bray’s patented rambling windbaggery. No buys for anything involving him until the way he’s booked improves drastically.

  • Wrestling Weekly: Balls Mahoney, Killing Stipulations, Return of the Mighty Mailbag~!

Les and Vic are online a day early because Les is headed to New Orleans to conduct a weekend wrestling training camp, so we start the show discussing what goes on at one of these camps over the course of a weekend.  After that, Les will share some memories of working with the late Balls Mahoney (17:30) from his days as Boo Bradley in Smoky Mountain Wrestling.  We’ll open the mailbag (29:29) and answer your questions on how often a wrestler can be repackaged before his/her career is beyond repair, is AJ Styles (44:42) in a roundabout way teaching guys to take less chances?  In honor of Shane losing and Mania and running Raw anyway, another memorable killing of a stipulation Les was witness to (54:34), how can anyone take WWE seriously after seeing the Wrestlemania stipulation killed (56:31), and is Bray Wyatt too cool a heel to be effective at this point (70:37)?  We’ll give our takes on those, as well as discuss a few likes and dislikes about this week’s edition of Raw along the way.  Thanks for listening and we hope you have a great weekend~!

  • Brock Lesnar vs. Bray Wyatt booked for WWE Roadblock

On this week’s edition of Smackdown that aired in Canada Wednesday and in the U.S. Thursday, WWE announced that Brock Lesnar will wrestle Bray Wyatt at the Network exclusive special on March 12th, emanating from Toronto, ON.

This was discussed in recent Wrestling Observer Newsletters and on Wednesday’s Wrestling Observer Radio.

This match was originally scheduled for this year’s WrestleMania, but Dean Ambrose was moved into the Wyatt spot prior to the Fastlane PPV. Wyatt does not have a WrestleMania opponent as of yet, but it’s expected that he and the rest of the Wyatt Family will compete in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal.

This follows an announcement Tuesday that Triple H will defend the WWE title in the main event of Roadblock. In addition, NXT Tag Team Champions The Revival (Dash Wilder/Scott Dawson) will defend those titles against Enzo Amore and Colin Cassidy in a match made official on Wednesday’s NXT broadcast.

Lesnar has been a fixture of these Network specials, competing against Kofi Kingston and Big Show on recent shows.

  • WWE Jonesboro, AR, live results: Bray Wyatt vs. Kane; New Day vs. Usos

    Submitted by Brian Tramel

    – Neville vs. King Barrett

Solid opener. Crowd is hot! Moonsault to floor! Red arrow for the finish with Neville winning.

    – Bo Dallas & Heath Slater vs. Damien Sandow & Darren Young

Sandow got a good reaction. Crowd still hot! Outcasts won.

    – Rusev with Lana vs. Fandango

Rusev in less than a minute; why? Rusev then challenged anyone.

    – Rusev vs. Ryback

Ryback got a huge reaction! They worked hard and crowd was into it.

    – Enzo & Big Cass with Carmella vs. The Ascension

There was some that knew the Enzo & Cass gimmick, but not a lot. Small “How you doin?” Chant. Real quick match with Enzo & Cass going over with finisher. Wyatts jump Big Cass & Enzo with Big Show making save with huge pop, which leads to…

    – Luke Harper & Braun Strowman & Erick Rowan vs. Big Cass & Enzo & Big Show

Surprised to say it was a solid match. Big Show only in for hot tag after double heat. Crowd was loud. Show choke slammed Rowan for finish.

    – Divas Champion Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch

Damn good match. Best match on the show. Lots of near falls leading to Charlotte winning with feet on ropes.

    – WWE Tag Team Champions New Day vs. Usos

Crowd was hot for both teams. Total comedy until heat started. Fun match

    – Bray Wyatt vs. Kane

Bray got a big reaction. Kane got a pretty good pop also. I am not sure why Bray has not turned baby. Bray did a crotch chop and said “suck it” to a fan. Crowd kinda died and people started leaving. Bray was working hard, no one cared. Kane pins Bray after choke slam.

    – Summary:

A solid house show, especially since this is the B crew. I was told this was the same exact show as the night before in Cape Girardeau, MO. Most over on the show was probably Big Show (surprising, but probably because he has been there so long and everyone knows him).  As for the new guys, New Day were really over and crowd liked Usos a lot also. Another big surprise and it was the same as last time they were in Jonesboro, but Sandow was really over with the crowd. Pretty good for a guy that has not been on TV in months. Enzo & Cass were not over when they first came out, but before that 6 man was over the crowd was loving them. Natural charisma from the trio.

  • WWE Cape Girardeau, MO, live results: Kane vs. Bray Wyatt; Enzo & Cass tangle with the Wyatts

    Submitted by Thomas Jackson

    – Neville vs Bad News Barrett

Neville got the win with the Red Arrow.

    – Social Outcasts (Bo Dallas and Heath Slater) vs. Darren Young and Damien Sandow

Sandow was OVER, but Outcasts got the win with a roll up.

    – Rusev (with Lana) vs. Fandango

Rusev won in less than a minute with the Accolade. The doctor ran to ringside and helped Fandango to the back after the match, not sure what sort of injury he may have received.

    – Rusev vs. Ryback

Rusev got on the mic and challenged anyone to come out and face him, which led to Ryback (massive pop) to accept the challenge. Hard hitting match, Ryback eventually picked up the win with a Shellshock.

    – Enzo and Big Cass vs The Ascension

Enzo and Big Cass got the victory fairly quickly. Afterwards, the Wyatt Family (minus Bray) ran down and attacked Enzo and Big Cass, with Big Show coming in for the save. After some trash talk by Show, this led to a six man tag.

    – Enzo, Big Cass, and Big Show vs. Wyatt Family (Harper/Rowan/StroMAN)

Show, Cass, and Enzo defeated the Wyatt Family when Show pinned Rowan after a chokeslam.

    – Divas Champion Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch

My personal choice for match of the night. Charlotte got the victory with a roll up.

    – WWE Tag Champions New Day vs. The Usos

The Dudleys was also advertised for this match but for whatever reason they weren’t here. Fun match, lots of playing to the crowd by both teams. The New Day ended up picking the win after some shenanigans, but afterwards The Usos survived a beatdown and posed with the championships.

    – Kane vs Bray Wyatt

Kane won with a chokeslam, but Bray controlled most of the match.

  • Blackjack Mulligan hospitalized; Bray Wyatt & Bo Dallas not at RAW

Monday’s RAW lineup in Birmingham, AL, had to be changed somewhat as both Bo Dallas (Taylor Rotunda) and Bray Wyatt (Windham Rotunda) flew home from Birmingham to Tampa as grandfather, Bob “Blackjack Mulligan” Windham, is in bad shape.

Mike Rotunda, a producer with WWE, Bob’s son-in-law, and the father of Wyatt and Dallas, flew home with his sons today as well. Both Bray and Bo did work WWE house shows Sunday night, so something obviously changed between then and today in order to cause their trip back.

The 73-year-old Windham was hospitalized in June 2015 after suffering a heart attack. He and partner “Blackjack” Jack Lanza were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in April 2006. He worked all over the world as a tag team wrestler and as a singles wrestler in all of the key promotions, winning titles with Lanza, Ric Flair, and Dick Murdoch.

We’ll discuss any updates or story developments on tonight’s edition of Wrestling Observer Radio.

  • WWE Smackdown results (11/12): WWE Title Tournament, Bray Wyatt challenges Undertaker & Kane

    – Air Date: November 12, 2015 (Nov 11 in Canada)
    – Location: Manchester Arena in Manchester, England

    The Big News:

Undertaker did not actually appear on Smackdown, but did accept Bray Wyatt’s challenge for a tag team match at Survivor Series. Also, Kalisto beat Ryback clean.

    Show Recap:

The show started with a recap of Seth Rollins’ injury and they plugged tonight’s tournament matches.

The Wyatts interrupted and a video recap was shown of the angle with Undertaker and Kane from Raw. They piped in some crowd booing as the Wyatts stood in the ring. Luke Harper said they would sacrifice “dem Uso boys” to honour Bray Wyatt. Erick Rowan said Bray brings sorrow to those who oppose him and they would do the same tonight. Braun Strowman said “Look at my face… and see your annihilation.” Strowman added that he would pile bodies to the sky for Bray.

Bray said Kane and Undertaker may have escaped the pits of hell but they’ll never be the same again. He’s taken pieces of them and now they are apart of him. Bray challenged the Brothers of Destruction to a tag match at Survivor Series against two of his men, and gave them until the end of tonight to accept.

Bray said we would remember Survivor Series as the night Kane and Undertaker were buried forever. Usual lame Wyatt segment. The crowd chanted for Undertaker a few times through the segment. The highlight was the unintentional comedy of Strowman yelling, “Look at my face.”

Braun Strowman (w/Wyatt Family) beat Fandango via submission

Some of the crowd did the Fandango dance and he danced too until he got into the ring, saw the Wyatts and resigned himself to his fate. He started with a dropkick but Strowman tossed him around and won with the head-and-arm choke in less than 2 minutes. Fandango actually tapped instead of merely passing out.

WWE Title Tournament First Round Match: Neville beat King Barrett via pinfall

They showed a clip of Neville from earlier tonight saying Barrett was embarrassed on Raw and he would finish what Wayne Rooney started with a Red Arrow. This was not an inset promo, but rather a clip from what looked like a sit-down interview. This is a much better idea than the usual inset promos.

They did a dangerous spot early in the match where Barrett hung Neville’s feet over the top rope and then just slammed him head first into the mat. Neville rolled to the outside selling his head and Barrett followed him out, slammed his head into the announce table and launched him into the barricade.

After a break, Barrett used a pump handle slam and continued working over Neville. Barrett slid Neville to the outside and he crashed into the barricade. Barrett took some time to tell the announcers that he would be the next champion. Neville ran along the top of the barricade (a la Jeff Hardy) and hit a flip dive on Barrett. He used kicks and a standing shooting star press in the ring for a two count.

Barrett hit a back kick for a two count and argued with the referee that it was a three, accusing him of taking a pay off from Neville. Neville came back with a German suplex but Barrett followed with a swinging side slam. Neville countered Wasteland into a DDT and landed Red Arrow for the win. This was good. It went about 14 minutes and Neville took a beating. They announced Neville vs. Kevin Owens for Raw.

Backstage, the Usos told Renee Young that they have a rivalry with the Wyatts and weren’t about to be sacrificed. Jimmy was taken out by Strowman two months ago and they weren’t going to forgive and forget.

WWE Title Tournament First Round Match: Kalisto beat Ryback via pinfall

Kalisto said he respects Ryback but he shouldn’t be underestimated. He then spouted some cliches about being an underdog. This was another sit-down interview, but the material sucked. Ryback did an inset promo. I’m not really sure what Ryback said, because he spoke quietly as his music played in the background and his fireworks went off. He thinks he’ll be champion, probably.

They shook hands to start but Kalisto quickly began kicking away. He hit Salida Del Sol a minute into the match but Ryback kicked out aggressively at two, sending Kalisto to the outside. After a break, Kalisto used more kicks, but Ryback just picked him up and hit a spinebuster followed by two hard powerbombs. This presumably could have been a finish but Kalisto rolled to the outside. Ryback took control until Kalisto dropkicked him to the outside. Kalisto tried an Asai moonsault but Ryback slammed him into the mat (they messed this up).

Kalisto countered a shell shocked into a rollup for a near fall. Ryback hit a meat hook clothesline but Kalisto got his foot on the rope. Ryback tried a backdrop off the top rope, but Kalisto countered into Salida Del Sol for the pinfall win. Ryback kicked out just after the three count.

The match was good, not great, but Kalisto really got over well here and this might’ve been the highlight of the show. The crowd popped and the commentators put this over as a big upset win. Ryback shook Kalisto’s hand afterwards.

WWE Title Tournament First Round Match: Alberto Del Rio (w/Zeb Colter) beat Stardust via pinfall

Alberto Del Rio and Zeb Colter did a promo on the stage. Colter said the United Kingdom was really the Divided Kingdom because all the countries hate each other. He called the people haters, but him and Del Rio have eradicated hate in MexAmerica. Del Rio said the fans of the two “soccer” teams hate each other but they should be united. Colter said they would unite the MexAmerica Title (U.S. Title) with the World Title. This really sucked. The crowd chanted “What” at Colter and Del Rio was greeted by silence.

Stardust did an inset promo calling himself the dark horse in the tournament and would become champion. Del Rio worked him over a while but he came back with a Side Effect and reverse DDT. Del Rio went for an armbar but Stardust countered with a disaster kick for two. Stardust went to the top, so of course Del Rio knocked his legs out and used a tree of woe double foot stomp for the win. This was uninspiring to say the least.

They showed a replay of the Paige/Charlotte/Becky Lynch angle from Raw.

Backstage, Roman Reigns told Renee that his journey to become WWE Champion has been like climbing Mount Everest. The closer he gets to the top, the harder it gets. On Monday, he meets an avalanche in the form of Cesaro, but Cesaro can’t stop him because “Nothing at this point can stop me now.” They replayed a clip of Triple H’s offer, but Reigns said he wasn’t a sell out and would be standing on top of the mountain as the sole survivor of this tournament. Reigns delivered his lines well but it was heavily scripted and it was hard not to notice.

The Usos beat Luke Harper & Erick Rowan (w/Bray Wyatt & Braun Strowman) via DQ

This was the main event. Harper and Rowan attacked the Usos before the match started. The Usos fought back and one Uso took down the two Wyatts with a dive outside the ring. The Usos jumped back in the ring and challenged Harper and Rowan to get in. Rowan jumped in and the match officially started.

Harper and Rowan worked over Jey until he made a hot tag to Jimmy. He hit an enzuigiri and a crossbody for nearfalls. Rowan took out Jey outside the ring as Jimmy used a Samoan drop and running hip attack on Harper. He tried a dive to the outside but was caught by Rowan, and Harper followed with a superkick.

Back in the ring, Harper hit a sitdown powerbomb but Jey broke up the cover with a splash. Jimmy hit Harper with two superkicks, and both Usos hit Rowan with superkicks, sending both bad guys to the outside. Usos took them out with dives, and Bray had seen enough. All four Wyatts attacked the Usos for the DQ.

Bray mocked Taker’s throat slash as Harper and Rowan gave Jey a double chokeslam. Strowman followed by doing his stupid slam on Jimmy and Bray finished him off with Sister Abigail. Bray was about to do it again but the Undertaker’s dong sounded and the lights went out. Undertaker’s voice played over the speakers. He said the Wyatts would be dragged through the gates of hell and they would rest in peace. So I guess he accepts.

    Final Thoughts:

This show felt more important than the usual Smackdown thanks to the title tournament. The first two tournament matches were good and it was refreshing to see Kalisto beat Ryback, even if he is just being set up for Del Rio. The rest of the show was lackluster, as it was laid out very much like Raw. The tournament took up most of the time and the show concluded with an angle for the Undertaker. Except, unlike Raw, he didn’t show up, so it felt pretty flat.

It should also be noted that there was no women’s segment on this show outside of the one Raw replay (unless they add something for the Thursday airing in the U.S.). No match or interview. So there’s that.
