      – Jericho with a pre-match promo on being the best in the world and his displeasure in coming out to AJ Styles chants
      – Swagger had the ankle lock set in until Jericho reversed it into a codebreaker for the victory

    Luke Harper v.s. Dean Ambrose
      – Ambrose picked up the win after hitting Dirty Deeds twice and Bray Wyatt was ejected from ringside
      – Post match Wyatt came back out to start a beatdown on Ambrose
      – The New Day came out for the save and pushed Bray back
      – New Day & Ambrose participate in a dance off in the ring as the show ended.

    Side Notes:
      – Best reactions of the night were: Dean, Sami, Cass/Enzo, and the New Day
      – Surprising no Miz/Ziggler – they usually hit this live event due to its proximity to Cleveland.
      – Through connections I made my way backstage and a friend had an odd conversation with Bray Wyatt about him getting dreadlocks soon? Not sure the truth behind that but sounds weird for a cult leader.

    WWE Fastlane: Thumbs Up

    Best Match: Styles vs. Jericho

Worst Match: Truth vs. Axel (short, but had no business on this show)

Preshow U.S. Title match got things going well with a good match.  Nice to see Kalisto retain.  Not sure exactly what’s going on with Del Rio.  They are paying him a heck of a lot to be on the pre-show and the rest of the League of Nations seems way misused as well.

Divas tag match was decent, but not great.  It was the right finish though with Banks and Lynch to set up Mania.

Owens vs. Ziggler was a good match even though they’ve done it a bunch of times already.  Glad to see Owens retain and hope he has a good spot at Mania.

Show & Kane & Ryback vs. Wyatt’s was decent six man tag, although one I didn’t really care about too much.  Not sure the faces going over was the best call if the Wyatt’s are supposed to be strong for Mania, but then again they didn’t show at the end like I figured or Lesnar, so maybe they are changing course or saving it for tomorrow.

Charlotte vs. Brie was better than I expected and it was the right outcome again even if they wanted to give Brie a big moment after the Daniel Bryan retirement, but luckily they stuck with Charlotte retaining for WrestleMania.

AJ Styles vs. Jericho was great.  Have loved all their matches so far against each other.  Really well done and Styles winning was the right move.  Jericho has really done his best to actually put over the matches and the wins and losses and even put the Miz over this week in commentary.  It’s nice to see him try to help make others look good as well.  The announcers don’t even do that too much.

The Cutting Edge Peep Show was entertaining for the most part, but strange at the same time.  Not sure about a New Day vs. League of Nations feud.

Truth vs. Axel was a wasted spot even if it was short.  This could have been on Raw easily.  They could have given two extra minutes to the main event or someone else.

Triple Threat main event was very good even if it was a predictable finish and no controversy came from it, but it did what they set out to do which is to make Reigns vs. Triple H for Mania.

    Overall a good solid show.

    Hi Dave,

    Here’s my FastLane Review:

    Thumbs Down

Match of the Night: Ambrose vs. Reigns vs. Lesnar

Worst Match: Do I have to pick only one? Truth vs. Axel just because it had no business on a PPV

Thought that was a really, really weak show as your last PPV going into Mania. It felt like a glorified 3-hour Raw. Divas tag match, Wyatt’s vs. Show/Kane/Ryback, R-Truth vs. Axel? Just awful. The kind of turn-the-channel segments we get every single week on Raw.

The New Day and Edge & Christian (and L.O.N.) segment was beyond awful. Even if Raw expanded to 4 hours, there’s no excuse for this. One of the most awful segments I can ever remember on a PPV (I’m sure there’s been worse that I’ve mentally blocked out, but this was next level cringe). I’m to understand this segment was supposed to make us want to watch The Edge & Christian Show? This segment was so awful there was no chance in hell I was sticking around for even one minute after the PPV was over.

Based on all of the above, can someone explain to me why Kalisto vs. ADR was on the pre-show?

Owens vs. Ziggler was good, but it’s hard to care after seeing them fight almost weekly for months (or what feels like months at least). Brie vs. Charlotte was decent for what it was, but had an awful finish and then having Cole try to cover up for Brie and say her knee blew out, etc. after the fact. Shouldn’t commentators tell us this information while the match is going on? Jericho vs. Styles was good, but once again, a match we’ve seen repeatedly on TV in the classic WWE 50/50 feud. I just can’t get into Jericho at all in this run. He gets the nostalgia pop, says a few 1999 catchphrases, and is noticeably slow now. He can still put together a good match, but it’s hard to get invested in anything he’s doing. I thought having him kick out of the Styles Clash in what is AJ’s sixth televised match (?) was shockingly stupid. The crowd buys that as a hot finisher and it’s been kicked out of already in his first major feud on a throw-away PPV.

The main event was the best match as expected, but my God, the camera work in this match was SO DISTRACTING. I hear Vinny complain about this every week on the Bryan & Vinny Raw reviews, and honestly I usually don’t notice it that much, but tonight in the main event it seemed like EVERY big spot during the match – or when one of them would run back in the ring to pull off a big move they missed it or were zoomed in so tight on someone’s face that you couldn’t see what happened, or they cut to another camera right at the point of impact and we totally missed the impact of the spot. It really was driving me nuts. Surprisingly, no chicanery to the finish, which seemed flat and without quite enough build-up (at least to the way we’ve been conditioned), and in a surprise to nobody, Reigns goes on to face Hunter.

Even though I was expecting – and had accepted Reigns vs. HHH as the main event of Mania due to all the injuries – once it actually happened and Reigns was confirmed as the challenger, I just had such apathy to the match and Reigns chasing his THIRD title in such a short span.

Best match: Reigns vs Brock vs Ambrose
    Worst match: Axel vs Truth

The first 90 minutes of this were tremendous. Pre show and women’s opener were a lot of fun. Happy Kalisto get the win. IC and Styles-Jericho were exactly what I hoped they would be. Nice to see Owens and Styles going over. Women’s title was good enough. I love Charlotte as a heel and thought the story played out well.

The six way was a nice bathroom break.

And then it fell apart. The Edge/Christian segment was simply unwatchable. And their show was even worse. That mess gets followed up with a Social Outcasts filler match that would have made people change the channel on RAW. Did they time the show wrong? I cannot imagine why those two segments took up 30+ minutes.

The main event was a tremendous match. But my God is Reigns not over. I’ll never understand the insistence on his push. He wasn’t over last year and this year seems to be worse.

    Dave,

This show was just awful in my opinion.  The network itself had problems for more than 3/4 of the show, and the product felt like a throw away episode of Raw.  To make matters worse, we head into Mania with a main event that is very predictable.  WWE needs to hit a home run tomorrow with Raw.

I have watched wrestling for over 30 years, and I dont think Ive ever hated the WWE product as much as I do now.  Between this and Bellator, its been a rough weekend all around.

    Hey Dave,

Overall: Slight thumbs up. The first half of the show was enjoyable with solid action that met or exceeded my expectations.  Both the US Title Match and the IC Title Match were solid wrestling matches. Disappointing- would be the first word that comes to mind when attempting to describe the AJ Styles and Chris Jericho match.  Timing and Tentativeness by AJ and some sloppy and missed moves by Jericho hurt the flow of the match. The road was rough, but in the end they did reach the destination.  After the AJ/Jericho match, the show descended to the depths of the dreaded third hour of RAW. Thankfully, the incredible main event provided the needed shot in the arm to save the show.

If objective 1 was to solidify the main event title match for WrestleMania; that objective has been achieved.  As for the rest of the WrestleMania card, it is as murky and uncertain coming out of Fastlane then it was going into the event. I feel like Ambrose’s performances in recent weeks have earned him a prominent spot on the WrestleMania card.  I am hoping he gets a match against Brock Lesnar. It feels like it is at least a possibility.  No matter what the final plans are, the WWE has lots of work in plating seeds and building frames for those plans in the coming weeks.

Best Match: The main event was fantastic.

Worst Match: R Truth and Curtis Axel should have been left off the show.

    A.  US Title 2/3 falls match: Calisto vs. Alberto Del Rio. These two brought it and delivered a hotly contested title match. The action was better than their previous encounters and the story was enhanced and defined. Perhaps, this was Del Rio’s best match since returning to WWE.  He looked formidable in defeat and Calisto looked valiant in victory. ***1/2

    1. Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks vs. Naomi and Tamina. Heat was a little slow, but it did it’s job in building anticipation for the hot tag.  Match picked up after the hot tag to Sasha and escalated with some nice twists and turns. The finishing sequence was spot on in making both potential challengers look credible. **1/2

    2. IC Title Match: Kevin Owens vs. Dolph Ziggler.  Great action in the match greeted with a mostly tepid crowd response. Dolph worked 75 percent of the match from underneath and yet could not elicit an enthusiastic response from his hometown crowd. The audience appreciated the action, but did not root for one wrestler to win and the other to loose. I don’t know if that says more about Ziggler’s mediocrity as a face or Owens’ shortcomings as a heel. ***

    3. The Wyatt Family vs. Big Show, Kane, and Ryback. Slow and plodding to start as most matches involving multiple 300 pounders are. They picked up the intensity and creativity towards the end and were rewarded with a favorable crowd response. I am surprised by the outcome, but am appreciative of the effort put forth by all 6 men. **1/2

    4. Diva’s Title Match: Brie Bella vs. Charlotte. The story of the match was Brie using the trademarks maneuvers of her husband and sister in an attempt to dethrone the champ. I am not sure her imitations were sincere flattery. There was some good maneuvers and sequences, but I am not sure they made up an abundance of ugly spots and bad timing. Charlotte has made significant progress when it comes to character and presence, but her ring work is overrated. **

    5. AJ Styles vs. Chris Jericho. This match felt important. The hype video and pre match promo helped create the feeling. The match fell short of great, and hence was disappointing. An abundance of timing issues throughout that looked to be the result of miscommunication and uncharacteristic tentativeness by AJ .  The journey was rocky, but they did reach the destination. Very surprised that Jericho kicked out of the most “over” finish in wrestling. **3/4

    6. R Truth vs. Curtis Axel. How did this make the show?

    7. WWE World Title Number 1 Contender Match: Roman Reigns vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Brock Lesnar. Great match in which all three stars were given ample opportunity to shine. In format, this was similar to last years triple threat match at the Rumble. My shotgun reaction is it might have been better.  The  main event for WM is set, but both Brock and Ambrose are in need of opponents. It seems logical to put them together. ****

    Fastlane

Thumbs in the Middle: So-so undercard and a really great main event.

Best Match: Reigns vs. Lesnar vs. Ambrose

    Worst Match: Axel vs. R-Truth

    1. Kalisto vs. ADR. Fine opener. They need to find good opponents for Kalisto. Mauro Ranallo was better here than Cole could ever be. ***

    2. Sasha & Becky vs. Naomi & Tamina. Some messy spots but overall fine. **3/4

    3. Owens vs. Ziggler. Good but could have been better ***1/4

    4. Ryback & Kane & Show vs. Wyatts. WFT result. I guess Bray is out of the picture as a rival for Lesnar at Mania which is a good thing. Even with that, the Family as a unit, needed the win. Maybe Ryback is going to face Goldberg after all. **

    5. Charlotte vs. Brie. Brie messed some spots but as whole was a fine presentation. **1/2

    6. AJ vs. Jericho. The layout of this was super but it was rough in the execution. Either was too quick or Jericho is getting slow, I bet the later. The Styles was protected by so long that it was hard to believe that somebody kicked out of it on a “B” level show. ***1/2

    7. R-Truth vs. Axel. Why this was on a PPV is beyond me, if they wanted to fill time then just give it to the undercard matches. DUD

    8. Reigns vs. Lesnar vs. Ambrose. Great match. Predictable finish. Just by the reaction at the end one just know that they really got noting as far as main event attraction for Mania. Hindsight being 20/20 Roman needed to win the title last year from Brock, that was the planned scenario and the right one. But they changed because of fear of him being booed at the end. Guess what? Now he is in the same position but against a lesser opponent. Not to mention that he is already a two time champion with less than 50 days with the title. But the WWE brand and Mania name carried things these days so they are going to get 70-90 thousands fans in there even though nobody cares about who is wrestling. ****1/2

    How you doin’ Dave,

    Thumbs In The Middle

    Del Rio vs. Kalisto ***1/4
Going in thought anything below 20 minutes would be insufficient, felt the same way watching it, although felt they managed the time given well. Would’ve liked them to be a bit more heavy-handed both with Del Rio’s aggression & Kalisto’s selling, but thought it was a good match with some nice spots & glad to see Kalisto come out of the program (I presume) with the title.

Banks & Lynch vs. Tamina & Naomi **1/2
Surprised to see this go on first, crowd was a little flat, although they were for a considerable amount of the show, thought Becky was very solid as usual, thought it was fine until the back end of the heat where things got a little messy, Naomi wasn’t the best at feeding Sasha, a lack of fluidity here & there, but overall I thought it was ok.

    Owens vs. Ziggler ***1/2
Thought the layout was a bit weird with Owens getting the heat from the outset, then Ziggler applying a sleeper on the ground met with heavy resistance from Owens for what I assume was a hope spot, then they sort of went to early stages stuff with headlocks & shoulders blocks, then back into the heat, very weird stuff. Thought there was a bit of awkwardness going into the comeback, once they came out of the comeback I thought there was some good action, lots of nice spots and nearfalls, would’ve liked a bit more creativity & uniqueness with spots ala’ hurricanrana into the stairs spot, thought it was good though preferred some of their Raw matches.

    Ryback/Big Show/Kane vs. Wyatts **
Very surprised by the finish, can only assume the program continues in some form going into Mania, thought it wasn’t very pretty for long periods although picked-up towards the end, Strowman looks to be improving & looked semi- competent, Ryback dumped Harper on his shoulder for the finish which wasn’t nice to see.

Worst Match: Charlotte vs. Brie *1/2
Thought this was pretty poor for the first two thirds of the match, with neither some good action or strong character work prior to the heat, rhythm was off, a lot of awkwardness, but picked up somewhat towards the end.

    Styles vs. Jericho ***1/2
Thought it was a good match, but something was missing, and I can’t put my finger on it. It was a unique match in-terms of layout by WWE standards (for the better), there was a lot of nice work & creative spots, however I don’t whether it was the rhythm or pacing of the match, or a lack of drama, or what, but there was something missing, a lack of spark. I felt it was one of the those matches where most things look good but it kinda just drifts along.

    R-Truth vs. Axel *1/2
Surprised it was on the card, didn’t feel they did anything wrong, but wasn’t much to it.

Best Match: Ambrose vs. Reigns vs. Lesnar ****1/4
Thought it was a great combination of telling a good story & being a spectacular spotfest that wasn’t too fast paced, where lots of things lose a great deal of meaning & significance, although there were some instances of almost complete no-selling of big moves which I felt wasn’t warranted, also I felt they handled Brock very well. Saying all of that I didn’t feel it was at the level of the Brock vs. Cena vs. Rollins match, which you can’t help but compare it to with the style of the match. Also it’s another match where it left me feeling they’re playing a very dangerous game, in the sense of where do they go from here after doing so much stuff & the standards that sets, & it crapping on lesser matches when you expect guys to go out of there & build slowly and keep the crowd entertained. Ultimately I don’t think you can continue to put on main event matches of this type and not be forced to make alterations to the “WWE style” at some stage. In addition I was surprised with no interference coming from The Wyatts, and this combined the six-man loss has me questioning the Brock-Bray program.

    Thanks Dave

    Best Match: Styles vs Jericho

Worst Match: Truth vs Axel (as soon as it came on, it had to clinch it right?)

Was on the fence about Thumbs Middle or Up.  Hard to bring down a show too far that had 4 matches I really liked, and 2 others that were entertaining enough but there was some odd and maddening stuff here.  Which I am sure many will bring up or already have. The 2/3 falls match which was solid, on the preshow while the New Day talking segment and the impromptu Truth match being on the main card.  Stuff like those last 2 would be more than fine on the preshow, keep the quality on the main card. The Styles clash kick out. The Wyatts losing. The network feed having the most issues in a while for many users. The crowd audio adjustments for Reigns.

The main event had good storytelling and a ton of intensity but had this feeling that right when it was going into a third act with the multiple Ambrose chairshots it was over with Reigns’ quick recovery.  I hope parts werent hacked off for the aforementioned New Day/Goldust stuff.  Have this sinking feeling it was which is too bad.  As Dave and Bryan and every other Pro Wrestling reporter or host stated well in advance, Reigns was the least popular in the match. Ive said before – I LIKE Reigns but it seems like trying to get him over is the proverbial two steps forward one step back or sometimes feels like three forward and five back and its cringeworthy watching crowds still reject the guy. The match itself delivered though. Almost gave best match to Owens-Ziggler due to some misses in Styles-Jericho but the good work overcame those slips, and Jericho had really quick thinking covering as well. Both women’s matches continued the trend of being better than most of the “Diva’s” matches historically were.  They still arent on the level of the NXT women’s matches but progress is good.

Wish we had a better sense of what’s on tap for Mania aside from Hunter-Reigns.  They have 6 RAW’s to get there.  I hope that TV isnt wasted.   I was assuming one final Jericho-Styles match but the handshake seems to end that. Hopefully as fun as the series was between them, Del Rio vs Kalisto should be over.  Get Alberto back higher on the card and highlight Kalisto some more with the title. Let’s get some teases to Undertaker’s opponent and announce some more Hall of Famers and fill out the card.  I am guessing there are still a lot of tickets to sell!

    Thumbs mildly up

Best Match: Probably the main event, although AJ vs. Jericho was a very close second

    Worst Match: Axel vs. R-Truth

This show had a lot to like – the opening women’s tag, the I-C match, the Charlotte-Brie match, AJ vs. Jericho, and the main event were all good.  With AJ I feel like he’s having a little trouble adjusting to his new surroundings; nothing he’s done so far is indicative of what he’s been capable of in every other company he’s worked for (By the way, seriously guys, someone’s already kicked out after the Styles Clash?  Way to protect one of the best finishers in the world, dinks.).  But this was his best WWE match so far.

The main event was very entertaining but of course WWE went with the dreaded Reigns win, predictably to a chorus of boos (and visible thumbs-down signs from ringside fans).  I just don’t know in what universe Vince thinks Reigns’ inevitable WWE Title win at WM32 over the highly respected Triple H will result in the Dallas fans (or any other city for that matter) embracing him as their new hero. Despite Hunter being the company’s top heel the fans still like him, particularly due to his work in running NXT (that’s the price of a double on-camera life).  Reigns is just not going to work as the top babyface, at least not until he has a great heel run.  Creative has taken everything away from Reigns that made him cool in the first place and now people just aren’t that into him.  It’s going to be a loooooong ten years if Vince thinks Reigns can overcome what John Cena went through to earn everyone’s respect.  And Reigns isn’t Cena.

As for the rest of the show, I have no earthly idea why the US Title match had to be bumped for the E&C talk show or the Axel-Truth match.  What’s wrong with this picture?

Overall a decent show but it failed in getting me excited for WrestleMania.  Because I’m not.

Best Match: Roman Reigns vs Dean Ambrose vs Brock Lesnar

Worst Match: R-Truth vs Curtis Axel

The show was close to being good top-to-bottom. The Edge and Chritian segment with New Day and League of Nations went on too long and I saw no point to R-Truth vs Curtis Axel.

All that being said the rest of the show was good. I wasn’t sure how the triple threat was going at first but it turned out really well, with Reigns getting a credible win. I thought he and Ambrose opposed each other enough so that Lesnar didn’t come off as the babyface of the match. And the powerbomb spots were great.

Owens vs Ziggler was really good as well and I thought Del Rio vs Kalisto was great. Styles vs Jericho probably would have been my match of the night if it wasn’t for the couple scary spots. And Charlotte vs Brie was rough at times but was good at the end.

Worst Match – Brie vs Charlotte

Just a horrible show that dragged all night.  The only highlights were the Styles-Jericho match (when Jericho wasn’t sucking wind) and the main event, especially Brock.  The only thing worse than the segment with Edge/Christian, New Day and the League of Nations was the WWE Network feed, which was the worst it has been in years and years.  So many delays, lags and jumps.

    • Pretty good stuff here, with Miz hitting the skull crushing finale and Styles kicking out. Styles teased the Clash but Miz broke out. Finish saw Styles lock in the calf slicer for the win

    Rusev vs. Axel

    • Lana works the crowd by bashing Abbotsford and saying how everyone should be so grateful to see herself and Rusev. This brings out Axel (by himself) to not much reaction
    • Axel says he will kick Rusev’s ass and then have Lana to himself and shakes his hips like Rick Rude
    • Short match follows, with Lana distracting Axel and it leading to a superkick and accolade.
    • Rusev then gets on the mic again and asks for competition. This brings out Jack Swagger and another short match that sees Swagger roll up Rusev in a few minutes

    New Day vs. Usos/Ryback

    • Huge reaction for New Day, who came out first and then had to return to the back because their smoke pyro didnt go off. Light boos for the Usos but Ryback was over. He’s wearing new tights that say “Big Guy” and now wrestles wearing a weight belt.
    • Fun match follows, with Ryback eventually catching Woods and hitting the shell shock on him

    Lucha Dragons vs. Los Matadores

    • Dragons come out to a decent reaction, while the Matadores come out to crickets. They then establish themselves as heels by taking a Lucha Dragons shirt and wiping their nose/underarm and ass with it.
    • Pretty pedestrian match, with the finish seeing Sin Cara hit one of the Matadores with a swanton

    Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch

    • Both girls got decent reactions, and the match had some decent spots, including Lynch apply an armbar to Charlotte, who turned it into a powerbomb.
    • Lynch reversed the figure eight but moments later Charlotte rolled her up with the tights to win

Main Event: Roman Reigns vs. Alberto Del Rio

    • Del Rio was over, and was interacting a lot with the crowd. He was behaving like a face to the males over 13. Good reaction for Reigns, with kids and women behind him
    • Solid match, but a little long. Reigns eventually goes over after fighting out of the armbar twice. Reigns hits a spear to win.

    Biggest Pops:

    1) AJ Styles

    2) Roman Reigns

    3) New Day

    Biggest Heat

    1) Miz

    2) Rusev

    3) Charlotte

T-shirts for sale: New Day, Cena, Reigns, Ziggler, Styles, Ambrose and Lucha Dragons. Interesting they had no Kevin Owens items for sale.

  • The Week In British Wrestling: Scurll vs Ospreay, part 2; Grado loses title

We’ve got some of the best grapplers in the world doing great things on a weekly basis! Here’s 5 things you need to know about British wrestling this week:

    1) Scurll & Ospreay do it again…

On January 16th, at the York Hall in Bethnal Green, Will Ospreay and Marty Scurll put on a masterclass of modern wrestling at Revolution Pro-Wrestling’s High Stakes event. Just 8 days later, at PROGRESS’s Chat Sh*t, Get Banged, across London at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, they did it again. The two matches, although they were both around 30 minutes long, could not have been more different. The first was all about showing how to link a series of moves into a flawless contest, the second – also virtually flawless – was about emotion and feeling and two men who hate one another.

Ospreay is being talked about in hushed tones, and watching him you do get the feeling that every time might be the last time, that before your ticket for his next appearance can be validated, he’ll be off to Orlando or Japan. Scurll had a glimpse of glory, runner-up in the first TNA Bootcamp, and you sometimes could be forgiven for thinking his time has passed. This past week – and a year of solid work as The Villain before that – shows that to be nonsense, and both men would enhance the roster of any company in the world. For now, though, they’re ours. Enjoy it while it lasts.

    2) PROGRESS banged it…

As well as the superb main event detailed above, Chat Sh*t, Get Banged, named after a tweet from Leicester City (PROGRESS owner Jim Smallman’s team) footballer Jamie Vardy, delivered everything it promised. Mark Haskins – bearing the marks of a pounding by Kenny Omega in Swindon the night before – beat Zack Gibson to become the number one contender, and will face new PROGRESS champion Marty Scurll in Manchester on February 14th. Opening the card, The Origin beat FSU to retain the tag-team titles, and their next challengers will likely come from whoever wins the feud between the London Riots and the Sumerian Death Squad. They kicked off a three-match series on Sunday with a Michael Dante versus Rob Lynch encounter that was every bit as hard-hitting as a New Japan NEVER title match.

Coming dangerously near to stealing a show with so much talent having so many great matches, however, were the women, who turned a four-way into an intense twenty minute encounter, with even the most skeptical about the distaff athletes converted and delivering a standing ovation by the end. Dastardly Sloan ranger Jinny triumphed, and will face Leva Bates at the next ENDVR show in March, but there are so many threads still dangling between the four – Pollyanna, Dahlia Black, and Toni Storm made up the quartet – that this will run for the whole year. And that year will be a year in which PROGRESS promotes at least 22 shows, each one more anticipated than the last. It’s a great time to be a fan of British wrestling.

    3) ICW turned a different corner…

The build-up to Square Go, Insane Championship Wrestling’s version of the Royal Rumble, was all about the feud between ICW Heavyweight champion Grado and his challenger, Chris Renfrew. Renfrew, the leader of the New Age Kliq, framed his challenge as defending the honour of ICW, although few outside NAK loyalists went along with that. But, after the dust had settled on Sunday’s show, it was Renfrew who came away with the title, leaving Grado – who debuted a new look, with new music – wondering where to go next.

Renfrew’s first challenge could come from his fellow NAKer, Wolfgang, who walked out of the Square Go match with a heavyweight title shot, after besting 29 other men to win a 12-month window to cash in his opportunity. The rules of Square Go allow for 5 wrestlers to bring weapons to the ring, and the lucky recipients were Noam Dar (steel chair), Timm Wylie (lead pipe), Red Lighting (kendo stick), Jack Jester (sex toy), and Sebastian, who brought his GZR tag-team partner Tom Irvin as his weapon. Also in the match were Dave Mastiff, Jimmy Havoc, Doug Williams, ICW owner Mark Dallas, and all the ICW regulars. Next up for ICW is their spring tour, visiting England, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland, and it’s all building towards November’s massive Fear & Loathing IX.

    4) Alpha Omega kicked off their 2016 season…

While British wrestling has its areas of concentration, the north Lancashire coast is not exactly a hotbed of grappling action, despite the part the area played in the tradition and history of the sport in the UK. Preston City Wrestling operates 30 miles inland but the seaside is dominated by Alpha-Omega Wrestling, based in Morecambe, and presenting a series of well-attended, sensibly-booked shows that have kept fans in the area – and the adventurous traveller – entertained since they emerged in 2007 as the XWA. Initially owned by former FWA promoter (and on-screen personality) Greg Lambert, the promotion has passed through several hands but is still booked by Lambert, alongside current owner Charles Nelson Riley. The promotion tries to harken back to a time when wrestling was real, and while the success (or otherwise) might speak more about the people of the town than anything else, it’s a refreshing change in an era of kayfabe-breaking, social media-embracing meta wrestling, and more power to them.

Saturday’s Outbreak event, at Alpha-Omega’s regular Morecambe Winter Gardens home, attracted a healthy crowd to see heavyweight champion Stixx down Joe Hendry, the latest contender to try and break an 8-year undefeated streak. Also on the show, The Referendum (the top heel stable, all Scots and playing on the 2014 Scottish divorce from the UK which never quite happened), represented by Liam Thomson & Bobby Roberts, won the tag-team titles, Craig Kollins beat Chris Silvio, and Lana Austin & Alexis Rose defeated Nikki Storm & Carmel Jacob. With a roster that also includes Chris Ridgeway, Cyanide, and many of the northern standouts, Alpha-Omega are one of the UK’s best kept secrets, and might just be worth a trip to the seaside…

    5) The shows keep coming…

As well as spending much of the year promoting spot shows around their south west territory, 4 Front Wrestling promotes several big shows a year, and this weekend presented New Year’s Wrestleultion, at the MECA in Swindon. The show was supposed to have been main-evented by a 4FW Heavyweight title match between Tiger Ali and Doug Williams, but a series of events led to Williams putting his title shot on the line against local favourite Samie Sahin and losing, before helping Sahin beat Ali to win the title which sent the hall crazy. Also on the show, Kenny Omega beat Mark Haskins to win the vacant 4FW Cruiserweight title, and then immediately vacated it because he’s a heavyweight now, Drago beat Pentagon Jr in a Lucha Underground showcase match, and Japanese women’s star Hikaru Shida beat Shanna. The women were also in action down the road in High Wycombe (Nadia Sapphire actually worked both shows), where Empress Pro-Wrestling presented Never Say Never Again at the Arts4Every1 Centre. Three of the four women from the PROGRESS match were in action, with Jinny losing to Kira Fox, Toni Storm beaten by Courtney, and Pollyanna teaming with Katie Harvey to defeat Rhia O’Reilly & Addy Starr. Robbie Brookside’s daughter, Xia, also worked the show.

With an eye on the next generation, IPW:UK staged Future 15 on Saturday, at the Community Centre in Selsdon. As well as a multi-man “scrum” match (won by ProJo head trainer Darrell Allen, and also featuring London Riot James Davis, Lord Jonathan Windsor, and the return of scene veteran Muscles Mansfield), women’s champion Tennessee Honey successfully defended her title against Elizabeth, tag-team champions DnD saw off Sammy Smooth & Maverick Mayhew, and Donovan Dijak collided with Rampage Jackson in a super heavyweight bout. Across the Thames Estuary, in Essex, Reloaded Championship Wrestling Alliance – a promotion part-owned by Will Ospreay – presented Fall Out at the Rainham Methodist Church. Ospreay worked the opener, defeating 2016 rookie of the year contender Malik, while his Swords of Essex tag-team partner Paul Robinson beat Ash Draven & Sean Wilson in a handicap match, by disqualification. Also on the show, which our spy highly recommended, were “Blackbelt” Tom Dawkins, and TNA Bootcamp nearlymen Chuck Cyrus and Priscilla.

    Submitted by Chris H

    WWE Superstars:

    • Stardust def. Darren Young with the Crossroads.
    • Titus O’Neil def. Tyler Breeze with the Clash of the Titus.

    RAW Notes:

    • HHH got a good reaction for his entrance but he was being booed by the end of his promo.
    • Crowd was very into AJ Styles, chanting his name many times and pulling for him over Jericho.  It will be interesting to see how long they tease the Styles Clash. That was probably match of the night.
    • The guys dressed up as Savage, Hogan, Rock, and Undertaker were sitting in the front row facing the hard camera.  The Savage guy started to stand and do the Macho Man motion during the Kane vs. Wyatt match.  He was asked to cut it out by security.  Then he did it again and security swarmed on them.  During the commercial break, they were playing some videos on the Tron with the lights out and it appeared that they were being ejected.  A few minutes later, they were being escorted to the seats you saw them in during the Rock segment.  The fans chanted for them a few more times but they didn’t draw attention to themselves again.
    • The Miz vs. Kalisto match just destroyed the crowd.  Miz’s long period on offense had people begging for the end.  They somewhat recovered for the main event but not fully.
    • They didn’t make a big deal about the Fast Lane announcement in the building after the opening promo.  Many forgot that it was even coming, as people started streaming for the exits once Reigns and Ambrose won, and especially when Rusev went through the table.
    • After the show ended, and Ambrose and Reigns left, Rusev recovered and took another monitor to the back, to add to his collection from last night.

    Thumbs in the middle

I’ll just give my thoughts in the Rumble match:

    – Triple H wins…yay…yay…….Is he up to Ric Flair’s record now? Speaking of Ric…

    – Ric Flair won his Royal Rumble by fighting all comers the entire match. Roman Reigns get’s pulled out and get’s to rest for a half hour before returning to a chorus of boos.

    – Who eliminated AJ Styles? Quite a debut.

    – Who knocked the New Day guy off the other New Day guy’s shoulders?

    – Brock got eliminated by guys who were already eliminated. Huh?

Great effort buy the guys, but I’m tired of the McMahon/HHH show.

    -Thomas Judd

    Thumbs down.

I watched this show only to see if AJ Styles would debut, and how they would treat him. I was pleased he got as much time as he did, but can’t help but feel that being eliminated by Owens means he’s going to be part of the upper-mid card crew. Personally, I am also confused why they would, in introducing him tonight, bring in ANOTHER wrestler that the crowd would cheer for more than their chosen superstar during the Rumble, but maybe they’d assume that was a given?

    Best match: Owens/Steen

Worst match: Royal Rumble.  Pretty much a perfect match that captures everything I dislike about WWE booking, and why I haven’t watched anything of their’s since Wrestlemania 30.  Triple H…incredible.  Plus side, I did get to see Stardust, and can now confirm that the gimmick sucks as bad as you have mentioned on WOR.

Thanks for all your great work!

Best Match – Becky Lynch vs Charlotte

Worst Match – New Day v. Usos

Note that New Day v Usos was a good match, but if I had to choose one that one is it and that’s only because the Usos are past the point of tolerable blandness by now. New Day was thoroughly entertainingtonight.

Awesome Royal Rumble, awesome PPV. HHH winning may not be much better than Roman but at least it’s not as forced, especially after the whole stretcher/injury gimmick mid match led the viewers to believe a Roman return + win is highly likely.  No bad match on the card, really. Becky Lynch and Charlotte has my nod for match of the night despite the AWFUL finish (and Ric sex assaultish spot) because they really told a story in the ring tonight, and the match was focused on winning, and being the best. That’s a major change for the positive.

Highlight of the night for me was most certainly AJ Styles. With the awesome, AJ-appropriate new theme, the Styles Clash tease, and his long run in the match, it was thrilling to see. I hope he isn’t relegated to mid-card hell sooner than later, and he’s utilized like the rock star that he is. Can’t help but be skeptical of what’s in store for him.

    Thanks Dave!

Best Match: the Royal Rumble match

Worst Match: Usos vs New Day

A really great Royal Rumble match, much more exciting and intriguing than the Rumble of the past few years!  It seems like the Road to Wrestlemania season is also the season of booing Roman Reigns.  After the past few months of crowd support, they turned on him!  Perhaps centering the whole event around one single person backfired?  The match was really exciting overall, but it felt like the momentum dropped a bit after Brock Lesnar was eliminated.  It was a clear signal at that point that Roman was going to win (if not Triple H, who wasn’t in at the moment).  What a debut for AJ Styles!  Really glad the crowd knew who he was with rampant cheers throughout.  I was really glad (and maybe surprised?) that they let AJ Styles keep his name!

Aside from the Rumble itself, I thought they did a good start to the new women’s program!  The Ambrose vs Owens match was a great opener as well.  The other matches seemed insignificant.

    Overall an enjoyable show.

Best Match: Kevin Owens vs. Dean Ambrose
Worst Match: Alberto Del Rio vs. Kalisto

If you’re not watching with Spanish commentary, you’re missing out.
It’s a much less frustrating experience. Even the commercials are
considerably more tolerable with the Spanish announcers translating
    them in real time.

Nice seeing AJ Styles debut as AJ Styles.

    Lou Pickney

    Hello,

Thumbs Up for the show. Thought that it was an absolute blast from start to finish. There were a couple of lulls in the Royal Rumble but they didn’t massively drag it down. Loved seeing AJ Styles, possible feuds going into Wrestlemania are promising (Bray vs. Brock, Owens vs. Styles or Zayn), and thought the undercard was great.

Best Match: Kevin Owens vs. Dean Ambrose – Last Man Standing Match for the Intercontinental Championship. Both men were booked very strongly and it made them seem like they both would do anything for the championship. Great finish to cap off a tremendous slug fest.

Worst Match: Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte – Somewhat narrowly beating out Kalisto vs. Del Rio (which was good aside from some botches) because I thought that the finish wasn’t that great and the action was, at times, slow. I saw that some people really didn’t like the spot where Flair kissed Becky but I thought it was kind of funny. However, I don’t understand why Flair wasn’t ejected or Charlotte wasn’t DQ’d for that.

    Mike Jahrling

    Good evening Dave,

Just wanted to send my Rumble thoughts to you.

    Best match: Becky/Charlotte

Worst match: Pre-show tag (didn’t really hate any of the main matches on the show)

Overall, I thought the Royal Rumble was an enjoyable show but it had some problems.  I know everyone will likely rave about the Owens/Ambrose match but I honestly didn’t get too into it.  I don’t know if it was the Last Man Standing stipulation or the frequent camera cuts in the match, but something kept taking me out of it.  I felt the rest of the matches on the card did a better job building a story than it and ultimately voted for Becky/Charlotte because I’m more into where that will go next after that finish and post-match.

As for the Rumble itself, I felt it had a strong start but ultimately petered out by the end.  AJ’s elimination couldn’t have been done better and showed some foresight that the last two Rumbles lacked.  Brock’s elimination drew a collective groan from the people I watched the show with as nobody wants to see this feud at all.  But I think what made the ending of the Rumble feel flat to me wasn’t Triple H’s expected victory; it was the tease for a match that I think should really be the main event for WrestleMania.  I’m thinking after tonight it’s time to change directions and go with Dean Ambrose.

    Regards,

    Matthew Moddrelle

    Royal Rumble: Thumbs Up

    Best Match: Royal Rumble

Worst Match: PreShow Tag Team 4 Way

The preshow match was nothing special and I really thought the Dudley’s might actually win here, but it wasn’t to be.

Main show starts with excellent Ambrose vs. Owens match and what a perfect table smash from Owens.

Entertaining tag title bout as well although I am tired of this cominbation.  Wish there were more teams to mix things up.  New Day act is funny, but maybe a little too over done.

Del Rio vs. Kalisto had some badly mistimed spots, but still pretty good and why Kalisto needed to lose on Smackdown to get it back here I’m not sure.  Let’s see what they do with him now.

Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte was very good.  Glad they got some time to do a match.  A few weird spots that I thought for sure the ref saw and should have sent Ric to the back and Becky trying to get rid of the jacket off of her was a little too comical, but I guess Charlotte is holding on and the feud with Banks for Mania should be good.

Royal Rumble match was very good and the best one in quite some time.  Debuting AJ Styles was great and glad he was treated well in the match.  They played it out well although the Triple H was somewhat predictable.  I guess he had to find a way to get the title back.  I mean otherwise how will catch Cena’s number.

Overall a very good show.  Good way to start the year.  Hope they continue the momentum.

    Best match – Ambrose-Owens

Worst match – Kallisto-Del Rio by default (but it wasn’t bad)

Great show, best WWE show since at least Summerslam.  Opener was so good – two best guys in WWE right now going at it.  There weren’t any stinkers and it was logically booked throughout the night.  Rumble set up so many stories going into Mania – Owens-Styles, Ambrose-Jericho, Bray-Brock, HHH-Reigns.  They wrote themselves out of the corner they put themselves into, let’s hope they can keep it up.

Best Match – All were good, probably Ambrose vs Owens.
Worst – Rumble. Not bad per se, but some blah spots.

Good Rumble overall. However there were a few points that were troublesome going forward.

Number one is HHH vs Roman. They undid a lot of good work for Roman tonight. The perception was Romans has been handed everything and hasn’t had to work for it. So the company decided to answer that by giving him the breather at the 20 minute mark, and bringing him back at 29. Meanwhile Styles and Jericho carried large chunks of the in-ring. They can’t be shocked HHH got cheered. Mania could be horrible for him, even if he has The Rock in his corner. They have a star on the roster from the shield. Just that it’s Dean Ambrose. They had a chance to have Roman turn on a Dean win, and have a fresh main event with a fresh dynamic. Instead we will continue to get Stone Cold Roman Reigns.

Also, I understand the why, but the entire Wyatt family coming back in to remove Brock dragged on, and I think the having people come and go into the Rumble as they please thing hurts the match overall.

Beyond that, the show itself was great, and most of the Rumble was well done.

    Hi Dave,
Just some feedback on the Rumble match. I give the show a thumbs up for a really good undercard, but the rumble match itself left a lot to be desired. Hard to pick a best match of the night but would probably go with Ambrose / Owens, and worst match of the night is probably the Rumble itself since it was really predictable and not very excited about the boss making himself the winner.

    1. Pre show match – Fatal 4 way tag with the winning “team” advancing into the rumble. Was hoping the Dudleys would get the win since it would be cool to see them in the Rumble. But no such luck, we get Henry &Swagger advancing, not a good sign. lol

    2. Ambrose / Owens – Very good match, hardcore bumps, probably the best match of the night. Don’t think it really mattered who won the match since neither guy will be affected by the loss, but would be cool to see Owens the I/C champ again. Was great when Cole got bumped and fell over breaking his glasses, which meant we did not have to hear him commentate for at least a few minutes, lol. Would have been nice to see Mario Renallo added to the Rumble announce team as he brings that big fight feel in my opinion. But I digress.

    3. New Day VS Uso’s – A pretty good match, I like the New Day trio. Was not a big fan at first but they eventually won me over. Good match with the Usos.

    4. Del Rio VS Kalisto – Good to see Kalisto getting a push and winning the US title again. Good to see the undercard guys getting elevated. Maybe Kalisto is going to be the next Rey Mysterio. Good match, good win, does not really hurt Del Rio to lose in this situation and pushes Kalisto,

    5. Charlotte VS Lynch – The match told a very good story with the former friendship between the two being built into the match and made it that much more enjoyable. Both women are very talented. and Charlotte is amazing. Very good match. Huge pop by the crowd when Banks came out, I really like where this is going and hope they feature a match at Mania between Banks and Charlotte and give them ample time to build a really good match for Mania.

    6. Royal Rumble match – This match was ok I guess. Have seen better, have seen worse. But no huge surprises in the match with the exception of AJ Styles, which was really cool, otherwise somewhat of a lackluster rumble. The crowd seems to turn on Roman at strange times for some reason. And not really thrilled with Triple HHH basically putting himself in the main event of Mania as the champion since it would seem it’s just really to feed is own ego, but hopefully they will go somewhere positive with this. Hopefully Brock is involved somehow since he was eliminated by guys who were already eliminated, so I’m sure they will make that into a storyline. Will be interesting to see where this goes with Triple HHH as champion. But it’s just a little self serving to push himself as champ when and being in the main event of mania when there is a ton of talent to push right now.

    Thanks,

Best match: Charlotte – Becky Lynch
Worst Match: Usos – New Day

Definitely a ton better than the last two Rumbles. The Rumble itself held my attention despite the fact the ending was inevitable. It amazing how over AJ Styles was with the crowd. I’m cautiously excited about watching him on this roster. HHH also super over, which only goes to show how much hardcores still resist Reigns.

All the matches were at least OK. Opener was tremendous. Owens and Abrose have great chemistry together. A perfect match of brawlers who can go.

But the women’s match was the highlight for me. Charlotte is tremendous as a heel and Sasha and Lynch played their parts. The Divas are probably the strongest angle in WWE.

On the negative I couldn’t care less about the tag team division. I wish they would push Kalisto but fully expect him to lose Monday. Just another botched push.

    Hey Dave,

Thumbs up for the whole card but thumbs WAY down for the Rumble booking with HHH winning the title.

Best match on the card was Becky vs Charlotte. Really well done. Hope there will be a 3-way at Mania with Becky, Charlotte, and Sasha.

To me, with regards to HHH, it’s the same old shit. I will continue to watch this product. But I know casuals who only watch the Rumble and Mania. Maybe Summerslam. They see HHH with the title and think, “this guy was champ when I was in high school or college. Same old shit. Nothing has changed. I’m gonna watch something else on Mondays and Thursdays.”

You got AJ. Why not book AJ’s debut the way The Giant was booked in his first WCW match, where Giant beat Hogan for the title? Do something fresh. Something different. Something shocking, but in a logical way that makes sense. The announcers stated AJ was a former IGWP champ, like Lesnar. Imagine he comes in and wins the WWE title in his first WWE match? It would have been tremendous and shake things up a bit, and make AJ an instant main event WWE star.

Isn’t the WWE in business to make new WWE stars to make money?

Instead, the casuals see HHH with the title and mutter “same old shit” and tune out. With all the eyeballs on Royal Rumble, this would have been the time to do something daring, take a chance, and elevate AJ, in his debut, to the main event.  And they blew it because they are determined to ge Lex Luger 2.0 over.

    Jeff Rozner

Best Match: Rumble by default but really HHH winning in a totally non creative way is it 2003 again? Brock vs the Wyatts honestly who cares. Best part of the show Sasha Banks at the end of the really good Charlotte vs Becky match. Girls starting to get better reactions then most of the guys. Even though most of the guys are booked horribly so it’s not their fault. Ambrose vs Kevin Owens was good and the New Day is entertaining for what it is. They better have something huge planned with Rock. Brock vs Wyatts and HHH vs Reigns and Undertaker vs random opponent as your top matches at mania is going to suck if that’s the best they have. Thumbs barely in the middle cause of Sasha and Brock killing people.

    Hi Dave,

    My Royal Rumble review:

    Thumbs Up

Match of the Night: Owens vs. Ambrose

Worst Match: Kalisto vs. Del Rio

Thought the undercard was great. The Owens vs. Ambrose match was fantastic and might end of being a WWE MOTY candidate. Both guys looked like huge stars and felt really important. Tag title match was also good and the New Day seemed back on form (they’ve been jumping the shark lately). Del Rio vs. Kalisto wasn’t bad, but it was a bit sloppy… this always seems to happen when Del Rio faces other Mexican guys. The title change didn’t feel important whatsoever though due to all the flip flopping lately. The Divas match was better than usual (on the main roster) and I thought the spot where Flair threw his jacket on top of Becky’s head was one of the funniest things I’ve seen in the WWE in years, I literally couldn’t stop laughing. That got the match bonus points in my book, it was so ridiculous in a crazy old man Flair kind of way. And it’s great they’ve finally set Sasha up for a Mania match as a babyface.

The Rumble match itself had its ups and downs. It actually didn’t seem as much as a mid-card geek fest as it appeared it would on paper. For better or worse, basically everything we thought needed to happen in terms of storyline progression happened. HHH/Authority screwed Roman, Wyatt’s screwed Brock, Zayn got his revenge on Owens.

It was great to see the reaction AJ Styles got, that was a great reaction and moment. Although, I knew the problem of debuting him in a Rumble match he’s not going to win in that he’s got to end up laying in corners or selling for monsters most of the time. You realize how big everyone in the WWE is when you get a guy like AJ come in and you have all these monsters like Big Show, Kane, Harper, Rowan, Titus, etc. in there. I don’t think they made him look bad or anything, but I would have rather seen Bullet/Balor club debut as a group. At the very least, I think he should have stayed in until near the end instead of Jericho.

Back to the match, I thought they took a big step backwards with Roman by stretchering him out and then having him leave the match on his own. Cole noted “he’s refusing a gurney” as if that mattered. Isn’t the babyface supposed to want back in the match no matter what? As Bryan noted on Twitter, Owens the heel dragged himself back out there. They could have at least said the doctors are forcing Reigns out of the match to be tested backstage or something. And then of course later on, just like last years entrance against Sting, Hunter positioned himself with a huge babyface return, so after all the hard word they’ve done to get Roman cheered, they certainly once again positioned him to get booed tonight.

I wasn’t a fan of all the interference with the Wyatt’s on Brock since we already had the L.O.N. do a number on Roman earlier. It was a bit overkill in that sense, although I get why they did it. I’m really not excited at all about Bray vs. Brock for Mania. Bray is great with the right opponent, but with Brock I want to see him in a physical/athletic match, not all the wacky goblins and demons stuff we’ll be forced to watch leading up to Mania.

As for the finish, did anyone really expect anything different? There was no way around HHH and the Authority getting their revenge. As much as we may like to bitch about it, there weren’t a lot of options due to all the injuries. For all the speculation as to what might happen, when dealing with HHH, just think of this quote from The Simpsons…

Marge: “I guess it’s never the most likely suspect.”

Lisa: “Actually, Mom, in 95% of cases, it is. The rest of the time, it’s usually some deranged lunatic who did it for no reason.”

They killed each other!!! I was so happy that Ambrose won, and it was even better that he and Owens beat the ever loving shit out of each other in one hell of a match!

    Worst Match: Royal Rumble

I feels weird saying that because I actually liked the Rumble. They did a good job setting up matches for Wrestlemania, and we got the debut of AJ STYLES!!! However, with the exception of Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens, none of the matches they set up were matches I want to see. Lesnar vs. Bray Wyatt? Triple H vs. Roman Reigns? No thanks. Also, Triple H as WWE Champion in 2016? Gimme a break… (One other good thing: I wasn’t ready for Ambrose to be one of the final two. I actually thought he would win at that point, and I was standing up for the rest of the match ready to flip my shit if he won. But, he didn’t…)

    Overall: Thumbs Up

Despite Triple H winning, I thought the show as a whole was pretty fun and a thousand times better than last year’s Rumble.

    Thumbs Up

Best Match: Kevin Owens vs Dean Ambrose

Worst Match: New Day vs Usos

I thought the show was overall very good. The opening Last Man Standing match with Kevin Owens vs Dean Ambrose was great and it was the perfect stipulation. I also thought Kalisto winning the US title worked well. I have no issue with the tag title match but it wasn’t as good as the rest of the undercard which was really good. This includes the women’s match.

The Rumble match itself was almost entirely good. AJ Styles got such a great reaction and performed well. I think he would make a great opponent for either Undertaker or Chris Jericho at Mania.

HHH winning the rumble and the title doesn’t enrage or interest me really. The biggest problem to me is Roman Reigns being taken out of the match as it took away from the feeling of him being screwed over. But it was better than last year’s rumble match as it got over Styles, Owens, Zayn and Ambrose. Wyatt was doing great but the elimination by HHH killed him a bit. This might sound like a thumbs in the middle review but i enjoyed the show overall, and especially the first match and then AJ definitely liked the show

THUMBS UP without question.  Undercard was great, Rumble match itself was great, esp. considering that the winner was obvious as soon as HHH came out as #30.  This show was also helped by a great crowd all night.

BEST MATCH: Has to be the Rumble match.  There were some disappointments (as there often are in the RR) but overall, one of the best in recent memory.

WORST MATCH: I didn’t watch the preshow, but by default, I would wager quite a bit the preshow match was not as good as any of the matches on the main card.

    NOTES:

AMBROSE v OWENS: I was worried somewhat by having Ambrose in a match like this where he would have to actually do some real selling.  (I didn’t foresee his not selling his beating by being the RR runner-up.)  That said, a very strong match, that Owens carried.  If there was a category of performance of the night, it was Owens.  The only negative in the match was a change of momentum because Ambrose threw a chair on Owens head, which negated all the punishment Ambrose had taken.  Ambrose had better watch some Ricky Morton matches: babyfaces need to sell!

USO v NEW DAY: Great finish to this match, and a lot of this probably has to do with the camerawork.  Big E had to already be in the ring to catch an Uso, but the camera angle made it look like he just slipped in at the perfect time.  The New Day schtick seemed fresh to me, not too overdone.  A lot of strong spots in the match.  Even though this was a “smart” crowd, I think this match supports the idea that the Usos could be heels, and maybe they should be.

KALISTO v. ADR: A pretty good match that had some blown spots, which is to be expected with these kind of spots, and a great size disparity of performers.  More important is that this was the right result, to resurrect Kalisto.  It was bad enough when he got slapped around by the League of Nations during an interview, but when ADR was slapping him around during the match, I really felt that Kalisto had to win here or else he would really be buried, and he did.  I think he is a good person to put this belt on, and maybe have the US title be a de facto small guy championship, instead of two mid-card titles with basically no distinction.

BECKY v. CHARLOTTE:  I wish they would let Becky Lynch have human-colored hair.  But for Charlotte, I thought her bedazzled face is in keeping with being a heel.  The match was very solid, exciting, and honestly, I thought Michael Cole did a good job with supporting the challenger in his commentary.  Sasha Banks return, sans BAD and looking for the title, was one of the best 3 moments on the show.  I especially liked how she was true to her character, and threw out Lynch first — she is all about #1, not a team player.  If she goes back to BAD, this moment will be ruined.

RUMBLE MATCH: I would have been SO pissed if Roman Reigns won after “going to the back without being eliminated” for half the match.  It made NO SENSE that the League of Nations didn’t throw him in the ring to get eliminated after the beat down.  Some kind of worked-shoot fake injury would have been better to get him to the back.  This was the worst moment of the night.

I loved KO limping into the aisle, reminiscent of Bret Hart.  He was selling his beating earlier like a babyface, whereas Ambrose gets hit by a Mack Truck, and 30 seconds later he is doing his ridiculous mugging.  I like Ambrose as a performer, but I hate his present “lunatic” character.

SZ eliminating KO was the most predictable moment of the night, and sets up a WM (presumably) that should be good.  KO had the excuse that he was in a tough match earlier, so you can still make him look strong, EXCEPT Dean Ambrose is seemingly impervious to injury.

Shouldn’t Miz have been eliminated when the number after him got into the ring?  I seem to remember that was the rule in past years, that you have the 2 mins to get into the ring, or you forfeit your spot.  If you don’t have to get in the ring, why doesn’t everyone just wait in the back until #30 is called?  Why does it matter than Roman Reigns was #1 if he never had to get in the ring?

I knew that Lesnar was going to clear out the dominant Wyatt family, but only when I saw the Wyatts return to eliminate him (the only way you could really do it) I was disappointed to realize that this Wyatt push is only about feeding him to Lesnar at WM.  Disappointing.  VERY disappointing.  (At least the Wyatts understood the need the ELIMINATE their man, which the League of Nations and VKM didn’t figure out.)

AJ Styles looked GREAT in the ring.  One of the best performances of the night.  But he needs a haircut.

When you got to the end of the Rumble, with AJ Styles being the only real surprise, it was something of a let down to know that one of the people in the ring would be champion, and since I knew the odds, I knew it would be HHH.  I was interested that the Rumble fans are STILL rejecting Reigns, and were rooting for HHH to eliminate him.  I knew there would be a big pop when Reigns was eliminated, and there was.  The Samoans, Reigns and the Uso, should form a heel stable.  VKM, I knew Steve Austin, I watched Steve Austin during the Attitude era, I felt like Steve Austin was a friend of mine.  VKM, Roman Reigns is no Steve Austin.  At least not yet.  (With apologies to the late Lloyd Bentsen.)

Overall: Thumbs up. I watched all three nights of NJPW Fantastica Mania. Each night was fun and enjoyable. It is interesting to see the NJPW wrestlers and fans embrace the components of Lucha Libre that make it unique while maintaining some of the qualities of Japanese wrestling that set it apart from other forms of the genre. The mood was light, the atmosphere was happy, and the action was low on stop and high on go.  I did feel a though a level of sameness and repetition set in on each show, hurting the overall presentation and entertainment factor.  Too many of the masked wrestlers (luchadors) are too similar to stand out and the match formulas and spots are strung together in a similar format to the point of being interchangeable.

Best Match: Dragon Lee vs.Kamaitachi.  Far and away, this was the standout match of all three nights. With his physique and athleticism, Dragon Lee is a talent who demands your attention. Some of the spots in this match were insane and the timing was spot on. One of my consistent complaints about Lucha Libre is that entertainment often compromises the competition. This match felt like an intense competition between two athletes trying to make a name for themselves.

Worst Match: The Liger/Virus match was bizarre to a level of being bad.

    Hey Dave,

Overall: Thumbs up. Start to finish, it was an entertaining show. The undercard, especially the Owens and Ambrose match, exceeded expectations. The momentum was sustained going into the best Rumble match in recent memory.  The outcome was predictable, but the path to the destination was a rollercoaster of surprises. WWE should feel good about booking an entertaining Rumble match and an overall good event. Probably more importantly, WWE should be worried that the momentum that Reign’s gathered after TLC has dissipated going into WrestleMania.

Best Match: Ambrose and Owens was 20 action packed minutes that started the show on a high note.
Worst Match: Nothing was bad and nothing caused the momentum of the show to wane.

    1.  IC Championship Last Man Standing Match: Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens. In WWE, a Last Man Standing Match is as close as it comes to a sure shot for an entertaining match.  The aggressiveness, creative transitions, and awe inspiring table spots pegged this match above the majority of similar contests. Moreover, a lively crowd created a hot atmosphere for an equally seamy match. ****

    2. Tag Team Title Match: The New Day vs. The Usos. Some rough spots during the heat segment, but they overcame the miscues to build a solid match. The good outweighed the bad and the finish was strong. They aimed to steal the show and came up short. They need to turn The New Day face and stop swimming upstream. In addition, wrestling a quasi-fan favorite team handicaps a traditional hero team such as the Usos. **1/2

    3. US Title Match:  Alberto Del Rio vs. Kallisto. For the most part, this was a well wrestled match. The few miscues hurt the build towards the finish and took the crowd out of the moment. Nonetheless, the deciding pin fall got a noteworthy reaction. I still wonder why they did the back and forth with the title. **3/4

    4. Divas Title Match: Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch. Timing wise, it was not perfect. From a crowd investment perspective, it was a successful match. I count this as the first notable success in the “Divas Revolution.” We now have an over baby face (Becky) and a heel with heat (Charlotte). And we have Sasha. I don’t know if she is friend or foul, but it sounds like she is over.  Unfortunately, I feel Becky might be pushed to the backburner in favor of Sasha. **3/4

    5. WWE World Title Royal Rumble Match. The video packages and announces were pushing the “one versus all” story way too hard. By doing so, they were asking for a backlash against Reigns.  The backlash did occur, but enough thought went into the Rumble match to control the emergence of an all-out rebellion.  This was perhaps the most well layed out and consistently entertaining Rumble match in recent memory. Twists, turns, surprises, and possible eggs that will hatch into WrestleMania season feuds. The outcome was predictable, but the path to the destination was a rollercoaster of surprises.

    Hi dave,

Great show, one of the best in a while. Happy they’ve started the road to wrestlemania well after last year’s debacle.

    Thumbs way up

    Best match – the rumble!

Worst match – preshow tag if counts, if not then kalisto – del rio

Was really pumped for AJ Styles, they’ve not even changed his gloves. Loved them putting over the styles clash I was worried he wouldn’t be able to do it because he’s injured a few people with it. (saying that I note he didn’t actually do it)

Would really like to see an AJ styles – Chris Jericho match at wrestlemania which is possibly the direction they were going?! or him involved in the intercontinental scene with KO and dean ambrose.

Sami Zayn was a bit plus coming out so soon after AJ’s elimination.

Super rumble put together really well. Very happy fan seeing reigns eliminated, was cheering in my bedroom.

    Kind Regards,

    Stephen Maginnis

    Thumbs Up

    Best Match: Owens-Ambrose

Worst Match: Pre show 4 way

All around great show with not even remotely a bad match on the main card.  Typical intense traveling big event crowd too for the event which always adds to the atmosphere.  The one bad match was the 4 way for entry into the Rumble.  With these hour pre-shows I don’t know why they don’t give folks some time and a chance to shine a little and actually warm up the crowd.  Don’t need a **** match or anything just a little something more.

Last Man Standing was a war, those two really know how to project that hatred for each other and desire to win or keep the title more than most of the roster and for the most part they took time between spots to make the damage mean more.  Was very worried Owens would take a big bump with that chair around his neck thank goodness that wasn’t the plan.  New Day continues to really entertain at times, even though they have flirted with overexposure. Their comedy and work in this one stood out.  Usos worked hard as normal as well. Del Rio and Kalisto had another solid match, I’m hoping the flip flopping of the title lead to a best of 7 series.  The divas title match was on the better side of main roster women’s matches.  Was not feeling the teased Sasha being a lackey and lo and behold she laid Charlotte out and it’s time to pull the trigger on Banks with the title.

The Rumble itself was very good but had some challenges at times that brought it down a notch or two for me.  The camera work was really bad. Just straight up missing some stuff or some weird angles and cuts really interfered with the viewing experience, and can’t recall the last time this occurred to take me out of a big match.  There’s a lot going on in the Rumble but the crew should be used to it.  It’s not like this is the first WW3 event or something. Missing the Kofi elimination was ridiculous.  Isn’t it odd that they have had a couple years now with the Kofi spot resulting in a no big deal elimination afterwards?  Why was the camera on Reigns when Styles hit? Though this piece of camera view was intentional; I HATED the dedication on the Reigns beat down.  Couldn’t we at least get split screen?  It was on Reigns and the League so long it felt like the 99 Rumble which is not a good reference point.  I felt at times there wasn’t enough of a sense of urgency to get Reigns out or the fact that these people were going for the title which held it down a little as well. After all that though the work in the match was very solid and enjoyed the story.  Not minding Triple H as champion at all because it’s a logical path for him to do it himself after all the failed attempts with a chosen one representing the “Authority’s Best Interests”.  Hoping after Mania though they go in a different direction with some fresh ideas.  Was thinking it was possible Wyatt may stay and be able to eliminate Hunter and Reigns at the end and have Wyatt-Brock for the title as well OR a potential Ambrose turn at the end when it came down to the final 4.  Not saying any of that should have happened but it’s always nice when you feel that the end of the Rumble could have different outcomes.

    Network notes:

No issues during the show but once again had the monthly issue where it took many attempts to start the show at 7.  Saw a little more feedback than normal on Twitter that folks were losing or lagging, not to a crazy level but noticeable.  Was so tempted to stay up and watch the WWE24-WM31 special but wiped out after a lot of shoveling this weekend on the East Coast. Will be watching it ASAP though, looks awesome.

    Thanks

    Easy Thumbs Up

    Best Match: Last Man Standing.

Worst Match: U.S. Title Match (but it wasn’t bad)

This was a really good show despite some strange booking decisions by the WWE. (We seem to be back where we don’t feel the need for people to be heels or faces).  Example: Sasha hits Becky prior to a face turn.  HHH feels like a face going over Ambrose (the timing, how he made his comeback).  The WWE has really prioritized workers in the talent they hire now so PPV’s (where they get time for the matches and have real finishes) are almost always good.  Best woman’s match in a long time in terms of heat and crowd reaction.  I also love how they teased a future Styles/Reigns program, as well as Zayn/Owens or Styles/Owens.  Any of that would be awesome.  Styles was SO over and the announcers talked about him like he was such a star everyone knew him.  (Former IWGP Champ just like Brock!)  Hopefully the WWE is able to get some momentum from this going into Fastlane. I would assume the main event of that show will be a match for the #1 contender, maybe inside the Chamber or something like that.

    Royal Rumble 2016

    Thumbs Up

Best Match: Dean Ambrose vs Kevin Owens

Worst Match: New Day vs The Usos

    Another record for the books.

Kane eliminated one more wrestler to continue his dominance of opponents thrown over the top rope in the Royal Rumble.

Also, HHH won his second Rumble after a 14-year gap. If he were not responsible for the booking, it would truly be a remarkable accomplishment.

Sasha Banks became the biggest female babyface on the roster, although WWE can botch the booking by setting a three-way for Fast Lane that includes Becky Lynch, in an effort to put off the solo Charlotte-Sasha match for WM.

The Kalisto/Alberto Del Rio booking becomes even stupider with the recapturing of the U.S. title on Rumble. Now Del Rio has done TWO jobs to Kalisto in the span of two weeks. And is just as dead in his position, as is Kalisto.

If three-person matches are the way to go for Fast Lane, Kevin Owens vs AJ Styles vs Sami Zayn would be the way to go, putting AJ in with two quality, motivated workers and again pushing off the Owens vs Zayn solo match for WM.

Strowman is abominable. Atrocious. And looks like the latest monster to be fed to Undertaker for an “easy” victory. There goes the streak of great Undertaker matches.

Kofi’s annual Rumble spot was fine. But the elimination was completely missed during the Reigns beatdown. They couldn’t wait another two minutes? At least, it should have been used for crowd distraction as Reigns was WALKING to the back for “treatment.”

R-Truth brought in a ladder into the Rumble as if this was a Money in the Bank match, continuing his “I’m a moron” gimmick. It’s amazing that with the increased awareness of CTE and concussion injuries, they give a guy a gimmick where his long career may have played a part in him not clearly thinking about his surroundings and the matches he’s in.

    Hi Dave,

Overall I give the PPV 4.5 stars (out of 5).

Best Match: Dean Ambrose (C) vs Kevin Owens, Last Man Standing

Worst Match: If I have to choose one, it would be the Tag Titles match, but I don’t think it was awful.

    1.       Opening match was awesome. It was the perfect way to start. Ambrose and Owens were great as usual, and I am looking forward to big matches for each of them at Mania. They deserve the spotlight.

    2.       Tag match was ok. It seemed a little sloppy to me, or that they were just missing something. All worked hard and the finish was exciting.

    3.       US title match was good too, which I expected given their recent matches together. I expected Kalisto to win, but am curious where they go from here, and hope they keep the belt on him for the next couple months at least.

    4.       I loved the women’s match! Both did a great job, and I thought the match built well. The crowd really wanted Becky to win, which I thought they should’ve done only if they were going to continue the feud. They’re clearly not going to do that, which is fine because Sasha/Charlotte should be great and I’m looking forward to the promos and matches. It bums me out that Becky was literally kicked to the curb here tho. Like she was just a stand in, which is not the right play in my opinion.

    5.       Royal Rumble match was great. Happy to see AJ Styles in, perform well of course, and be in there a long time. Zayn was a good addition as well. I do think they should’ve kept Reigns in the whole match. Even if he doesn’t win, (which I didn’t think he should), it would’ve been a better story in my opinion to have him actually go the gauntlet and get thrown out by HHH at the end. The finish is what I expected, and I’m glad that HHH won, and Ambrose was the last guy he had to throw out.

Right now I’m looking forward to WM32, which I wasn’t  sure I’d be saying considering how the shows have been the past few months, but I’m hoping they build these new feuds well (fingers crossed).

    Cheers,

    Janice Bates—Denver, CO

    Thumbs Way Up

I am astonished at the amount of negative feedback this show has been getting on various comments sections. I marked out at Sasha and AJ’s entrances. I also really enjoyed the last 5 minutes of the show. I get people’s frustrations with using HHH and I personally was hoping for Goldberg’s music to hit at #30 but what we got was good enough.

    Best Match – Rumble

I don’t think people understand how difficult it must be to book a 30 man match that gives the audience as much as this did. Probably in my Top 5 Rumble matches. The flow of the match was one of the all time best and I thought the Roman heroic comeback swerve and timing of Roman’s return at #29 was perfect. They could even play it like HHH decided to take matters into his own hands seconds before #30 was due.

Worst Match – Del Rio Kalisto

I just don’t care about Del Rio. That is, I care as much as he clearly does. He’s been sleepwalking for months now.

Great job by all involved. If only it can continue…

    BEST: Royal Rumble match
WORST: Preshow 4 way tag match

    – The Preshow match got the show off to a lousy start, when a team with no history (and no one who was over like Sandow) won, then went on to last about a minute combined in the Rumble.

    – Owens/Ambrose delivered greatly.  Everything looked outstanding, and largely safe but they were really drilling each other with the chairs.  Crowd liked both guys.

    – New Day was very over among the hardcore fans in the audience, but they do need new challengers as the Usos seem a bit stale now.  Great display of strength by Big E for the finish.

    – Assuming he doesn’t lose the title on Raw, it’s good to see them doing something with Kalisto as this was a clean win with his finish, unlike the Raw one where he won with a roll up.

    – Hopefully WWE paid attention to the women’s match.  Good presentation, storyline, build up with the video package, match placement right before the Rumble that’s usually the spot of the World title match, plus the championship ring introductions did 1000x more for the women than a blanket DIVAS REVOLUTION branding.  Hopefully they keep this up and this is the feud that goes down as the game-changer.  The crowd was into this the whole way, it was worked like a big time match, and Banks’ return at the end positioned her as a star as it looks like Team BAD is history.

    – Not much bad to say about the Rumble match at all.  Smart move to have Owens eliminate AJ since he’s loved by the same group of fans.  The only thing that didn’t make sense was Brock going meekly to the back after being eliminated.  Most people were expecting him to destroy the Miz at the announce table before he left.  I guess the League of Nations not throwing Reigns in the ring to eliminate him after destroying hiM also didn’t make sense.  HHH as 30 was a surprise as I think people were expecting him to come in after Reigns tossed everyone in more of a screwjob finish.  He really won this one clean, except for the fact that they will probably play up that Reigns was forced to be no. 1 and HHH was given no. 30.  Two of the three top Mania matches appear to be set in stone though, with Undertaker the only question mark.  AJ/Owens and Ambrose/Jericho also look likely for Mania, if not before.

    LIVE NOTES:

    – Building was jam packed from before the pre show match.  Everyone went through metal detectors, but there were no delays getting in.

    – Return date announced for a house show on 6/26.

    – Crowd was mostly into everything.  The tag match was a little flat at times because the crowd didn’t want the Usos and once the New Day gets in the ring they aren’t as over as they are for their promos.  Everyone liked the finish though.

    – There was very bad timing in the Rumble as the spot were Reigns got put through the table and Jericho eliminated Kingston off of Big E’s shoulders happened at the exact same time.  I don’t think anyone saw both as people were explaining the spot other people missed.

    – The crowd really didn’t expect Reigns to be dumped out before getting to the final 2, but it was clear that it was done so HHH wouldn’t get a gigantic face reaction for winning the belt if he eliminated Reigns last.

    – The crowd getting behind Ambrose was probably the loudest part of the night besides Styles’ debut.  Zayn’s entrance and Sasha Banks’ return also got major reactions.

    – The Rumble match is an awesome live experience.  Probably more fun than any match I’ve seen with the exception of a really major PPV main event or a huge Mania match.

Overall, I give the show a thumbs up. The best match on the card was Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens, followed by the Royal Rumble. The worst match was Alberto Del Rio vs. Kalisto.

This Rumble was vastly superior to many of the recent ones, especially the last 2. The perfect guy eliminated AJ Styles in Kevin Owens, and the perfect guy to eliminate Owens was definitely Zayn. While I’m not too eager to see Lesnar/Wyatt, they set it up well. Closing the Rumble with Ambrose and Triple H seemed to be a great choice. Everything about this Royal Rumble match felt far better booked than the previous ones, and it might be one of the best Royal Rumbles ever.

    Hi Dave.

    Thumbs up.
Best Match – Ambrose / Owens
Worst Match – Tag team match on the pre show

Really fun show. Not thrilled with the ending. Thought it could have been time to turn Dean and have him help HHH  dump Roman.

The problem with Lesnar/Wyatt is that no one will expect Lesnar to lose at Mania.

Fingers crossed AJ Styles gets a singles match at mania.

    cheers –

    Gerry Stumbaugh

Have to give a thumbs up when all the matches are good or close to good, but this is the third Rumble in a row when you come away with a very negative feeling for the future… Roman was really made to look weak and HHH to strong when HHH won more or less clean with Roman apparently making a full recovery from the earlier beating then not even needing to cheat to win… Roman doesn’t even have the excuse of lasting an hour given he missed half the Rumble. Definitely two steps back for him.

Best: Ambrose vs. Owens was best, New Day vs. Usos was second best

Worst: Del Rio vs. Kalisto was the least of the matches

    Ed Branscomb

    Thumbs WAY up.

Best Match: Ambrose-Owens narrowly edges the Rumble Match

    Worst Match: None.

Great PPV (or are they now simply “Special Events?”).  For the 3rd year in a row, WWE puts on an overall very good card which has me revved-up for “Wrestlemania Season.”  Would’ve loved to have seen Owens go over Ambrose in the Last Man Standing Match but they still had the show-stealer of the night.  Both Owens & Ambrose should be future World Champions and hopefully their WM 32 match-ups feed into building them up even further.  The Tag Team Title match was entertaining with the right team going over.  The New Day being chased heading into WM is better than The Usos being into that position.  The finish of Del Rio-Kalisto surprised the hell out of me as I thought there was no way Kalisto would go over though I thought it was the right thing to do.   Kalisto has the potential to eventually hold the position on the roster that Rey Mysterio used to hold.  You want to draw in Latino markets and sell some merch to the kids?  Kalisto is the guy and no better time than now to start building him up further.  As much as Charlotte-Becky kicked ass, I things we’re still ways away from Becky getting the strap.  I think stretching out her chase could be money eventually but Charlotte-Sasha is the best Women’s Title match-up they can have.  I don’t think they’ll quite touch what they did in NXT (don’t see Vince giving them the on-air ring time they had at Full Sail) but I’m still excited to see this match-up on the main roster.  I thought the booking of the Rumble match was excellent.  There were no noticeable lulls, the seeds of many storylines seemed to be planted, and a number of new/ different talent was given a chance to shine (especially Braun Strowman & AJ Styles.  On a sidenote:  Michael Cole kept putting over Styles which tells me he’s in a promising position and we shouldn’t assume he won’t be utilized well)  ) Loved the Owens-Zayn clash and LOVED how they set-up The Final Four of Sheamus, Reign, Ambrose, Triple H.  Was entertained the entire time and though speculation heavily gave away the eventual ending, the ride was still worth it.  I’m a 3 hour car ride outside of Cleveland and I just may have to go to Fast Lane.  The Road to Wrestlemania looks promising.

Thumbs in the middle: Overall an entertaining show but I just can’t relate to their product anymore. It’s like watching a compilation of good matches but with no build up or compelling characters. This was their last opportunity to create a genuine interest for the Mania season and they just did the contrary. Nobody gives a shit about Roman Reigns, or him being champion, or him vs. The Authority. In fact, the heel owner thing is at least 15 years past it’s prime, and in this particular case is beyond stupid since everyone knows that he is their hand picked guy and that they have pushed him for the last 4 years with no results. Not to mention that they never explained why The Authority don’t like Roman as champion as part of the storyline. Really, this is one of the worst cases of forcing someone down people’s throats.

    Best Match: Ambrose vs. Owens

    Worst Match: 4-way opener

    1. Henry & Swagger vs Dudleys vs Sandow & Young vs Ascension. Pointless. Sandow got a better reaction than Roman Reigns, think about that. *1/4

    2. Ambrose vs Owens. Really great match. A perfect was to end a feud but given how this company works they’ll probably have five more matches. Really, the only negative about this match was that they both were booked in the Rumble, specially Ambrose since he is the champion. ****1/4

    3. New Day vs. Usos. Good, but they couldn’t follow the opener and people didn’t care about the Usos (probably because their association with Roman) ***1/4

    4. Kalisto vs ADR. Fine but lacked something. The quick title switches killed this feud. **1/2

    5. Charlotte vs Lynch. Very good match. Charlotte is the only real heel in the company and Becky is great at the underdog role. The post-match was fine, although they treated Becky like an afterthought. Again, Sasha got a better reaction than Roman. ***3/4

    6. Rumble Match. Match was good early on but lost heat at the end. The Wyatt vs. Lesnar segment took forever and mostly dragged. AJ, an outsider doing his debut, got the best reaction on the show but you could see their backhanded intentions in the booking. He sold like 80% of the time he was in and then was eliminated by Owens who himself was selling a beating. If they knew any better he should have been the last one with HHH. At least that way people would have been mad about Hunter winning. Dean Ambrose as the next to last was lame as everyone knew that he, as IC champion, had no chance of winning a second belt. The biggest pop was the Roman elimination and this year they don’t have the Daniel Bryan excuse. ***1/2

So Mania looks like Roman vs HHH for the title, Brock vs Bray and Taker vs Braun. If Vince McMahon thinks that he is going to sell 100,000 tickets with those main events he should quit WWE and join Sarah Palin as one of Donald Trump’s supporters because he is equally delusional. Actually, I feel bad for the the people who already got Mania tickets since that show is going to suck.

    How you doin’ Dave,

    Thumbs Up

Sandow & Young vs. Ascension vs. Henry & Swagger vs. Dudleys **1/2

Was surprised The Dudleys didn’t win, although really I shouldn’t have been, the treatment they receive continues to flummox me. Fair enough they should be putting the younger guys over, but I feel they’re taking it a little too far. Thought the match was ok, although the finishing sequence was extremely awkward.

Best Match: Ambrose vs. Owens ****

Felt it was a very good match with high work-rate and lots of spectacular spots, that was well-paced for the most part. Ambrose’s need to work on his showmanship was very apparent again I thought. For awhile he was trying a spot where he’d be on his knees and then lift his head, similar to Taker’s sit-up spot, attempting to garner a reaction. Now for awhile, especially in matches with Owens, he’s been doing this deal where he travels to all four corners selling strikes and then no-sells, but he does it very poorly. If you’re going to do that spot, do that spot. Slap yourself on your own chest after taking chops, pull down the straps, fire-up and get the heel to beg-off, do something. Instead he rushes the spot with very little dramatics and it fails every time. Just an observation. Also I liked the finish as it somewhat protected Owens, with it being a semi-fluke finish.

Worst Match: New Day vs. Usos **

Thought the match was an absolute clunkfest for the first two-thirds, although it did pick-up towards the end. After months of killing babyfaces with his antics, it amused me that Woods tried to heel himself by not obliging the crowd requests to play the trombone. New Day simply have to turn.

    Del Rio vs. Kalisto ***1/2

Thought the match was quite rushed, but it had some nice spots as well as a lot of good fluid work with good technique, although there was one particularly large botch. Taking the title off Kalisto made no sense at all. If it was a babyface who was already established and quite over, and you want to play hot potato with the title, fair enough. But his big singles push had just started, it wasn’t productive at all, it can be overcome but they’ve made life harder for him and themselves.

    Becky vs. Charlotte ***1/4

Thought it was a good smooth solid match, although they did start rushing towards the end. This storyline has really enabled Becky to gain some steam, and to prevent it from fizzling out I would’ve liked her to come with the title, at least for a short run, especially with the nature of the storyline. However part of that maybe my preference effecting my judgment, as I am quite fond of Becky Lynch. I’m just worried she may lose the overness she’s gained. Thought the post-match angle was really good.

    Royal Rumble Match ****

Thought it was absolutely gripping rumble, and a damn sight better than the two previous years. Had good pace to it and not a lot of lulls.  I expected Styles to get a big pop, but I must admit not that big. It was absolutely thunderous. Overall the crowd put to bed the East Coast rumble crowd myth. It was a very hardcore Orlando crowd, clearly full of travellers. I enjoyed watching AJ sell like a crazy man for everybody, no doubt to attempt to get over with the locker room, although I did worry about his back. I was fairly happy with his showing, although I would’ve like him to make it to the last six-eight. However I was somewhat understanding as you leave him in too long as there’s a risk it could overshadow the finish, but perhaps I’m giving them too much credit. Also I expect there was a certain amount of testing his attitude, which we’ll no doubt see more of in the weeks to come. He’s not going to be a top guy there so I don’t think we can expect too much, he’ll be somewhere in that 4-6 babyface range.

Otherwise I thought Brock’s elimination could’ve been handled a little better, would’ve liked Owens to get a longer run especially after eliminating AJ, and wasn’t fond of the winner. I thought there was a chance HHH may just interfere and cause Reigns to be eliminated, or may’ve shown-up on Raw to start-up the feud with Reigns after a Reigns victory. Triple H as champion in 2016 leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Also in all honestly I was hoping/thought there was a small chance Bryan maybe 30, but it wasn’t to be. Reigns being 3rd was a surprise, and I’d be interested to know if that was an audible, in response to the Reigns boos, in a last-ditch attempt to get HHH some heat by beating Ambrose. WWE are just going to have to accept that with the hardest of their hardcore fans, they simply are never going to accept having someone forced upon them, and want a choice in who the top guy is.

    Thanks Dave

    Tom Griffiths

Big thumbs up for this show.

Kevin Owens vs. Dean Ambrose – Last Man Standing IC Title Match:

I can only imagine how great this match was live. Camera work here was horrifying and made me sick. Loved the spots. If it means anything, I had trouble staying in HD using the Network app on my LG. ****

The Usos vs. New Day – Tag Team Title Match:

I found it hard to give a shit about this match. Cool spots, but not much in substance. **1/2

Kalisto vs. Alberto Del Rio – U.S. Title Match: Solid match! Loved the finish! ***1/4.

Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte – Divas Title Match:

Really good match! Post match was EXCELLENT! Really hope it leads to a Mania 4 way with It’s Bayley. ***1/4

The Royal Rumble Match: Rumble was incredible, best of the ones I’ve watched by a good bit. Only things I didn’t approve of was the handling of Brock. He should’ve jumped back into the ring and whopped Bray’s ass.  You can’t make The Beast sympathetic. AJ was amazing, Sami was awesome, and everything that happened from Triple H on (with the exception of Sheamus) was awesome. ****1/2

Camera work was terrible throughout the night. Otherwise, a fantastic show.

    Thanks,

    Brady Childs

    Overall: Thumbs down

    Best match: Royal Rumble

Worst match: Fatal four-way tag team match

That Becky Lynch-Charlotte match had one of the worst finishes I’ve ever seen in a title match.

The Royal Rumble, and really WWE as a whole, can be summarized by Owens throwing out AJ Styles while screaming, “WELCOME TO WWE!” Vince’s geriatric mindset never ceases to amaze in its obliviousness. They’ve burned this heel authority angle on both sides of the candle and now that the wicker has turned to ash and the wax is all melted they STILL, in TWENTY SIXTEEN, will not move on.

    Thumbs in the middle

    Best match:  Owens- Ambrose

    Worst match: Divas

Entertaining show, but AJ Styles was the only “surprise” — they had alluded to multiple surprises.

Rumble was decent, but  not incredible. Styles was good; live crowd support made his appearance even better.

Liked the clean elimination by HHH of Reigns, which seemed to please the live fans .

Owens-Ambrose a great opener.  Del Rio-Kalisto also delivered another

strong match. Usos lost as usual. Divas just filler.

It sounded on TV like Reigns was heavily booed, so they still have a problem to overcome there.

  • WWE Bossier City, LA, house show report: Chris Jericho vs. ADR, Dean Ambrose vs. Kevin Owens

    By Charlie Beuttel

    – After the National Anthem, U.S. Champion Alberto Del Rio came out first and cut a promo saying he didn’t have a opponent tonight and that he was leaving because of Cena’s injury. Jericho interrupted Del Rio and said they should wrestle.

    – Chris Jericho defeated U.S. Champion Alberto Del Rio via pinfall by codebreaker

Y2J came out to a very loud pop. Both wrestlers played well to the crowd very well. The match was very action packed as both men were able to hit their finishers.

    – Titus O’Neil defeated Stardust via pinfall by Clash of the Titus.

It was a very simple match. The crowd yelled “Cody” most of match.

    – R-Truth def. Heath Slater

Truth got a very loud pop. Both wrestlers played with the crowd as truth would shout whats up and crowd would shout it back. slater would get booed. Truth won in a very quick match.

    – Kalisto and El Torito def. Los Matadores

Crowd very dead in this match. Quick back and forth match. Kalisto and El Torito won after kalisto finisher.

    – Dolph Ziggler def. Tyler Breeze

Ziggler came out to a huge pop. Good match as both guys fought hard back and forth. A lot of close pinfalls. Ziggler won via pinfall by using Zigzag.

    – Brie Bella def. Tamina with Summer Rae as guest referee

Tamina was the aggressor most of the match. After a close pinfall Tamina and Summer got into a shoving match until Brie snuck up and rolled up Tamina for a pinfall victory.

    – Ryback def. Rusev

Match started with chants for Lana. Crowd was very involved in this match. The fight was back and forth until lana tried to interfere by coming on to the apron.  Rusev got the upper hand by superkicking. Ryback escaped Rusev’s submission hold and hit the Shellshock for the win.

    – IC Champion Dean Ambrose def. Kevin Owens

Owens dominated first half of match then the match went back and forth.  oth men were able to hit their finishers. Near the end, Owens exposed the turnbuckle and grabbed a chair but wasn’t able to use it. Ambrose then hit Dirty Deeds for the win.

  • WWE NXT Breaking Ground Episode 10: Respect; Breeze called up

    Breaking Ground Episode 10: Respect

Key Takeaway: The first season of Breaking Ground caps off with a really strong episode focusing on the NXT performers at TakeOver: Respect.

Show Recap: In terms of a single episode, this edition worked better than any other episode of this season, and arguably works entirely on its own as a backgrounder on the NXT performers. Last week left off with fans beginning to line up outside Full Sail University for TakeOver: Respect. From there, we branch off into several parallel paths:

Jason Jordan and Chad Gable: Gable and Jordan talk about the importance of the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic – we get a nice video package explaining Dusty’s death and legacy – and then shift to the excitement of them getting to wrestle on their first TakeOver event. They lose to Baron Corbin and Rhyno, but afterwards get a lot of praise backstage for their performance and view the experience as something to build on.

Baron Corbin: Before the show, Corbin and Tino Sabbatelli have a nice chat about their shared background as NFL players. Corbin notes how he came in and people didn’t like him because he didn’t come from the indies or pay his dues, but he worked hard and got to the top – basically saying that he hopes Sabbatelli can do that, too. Anyway, Corbin and Rhyno beat Jordan and Gable, then lose to Samoa Joe and Finn Balor in the finals. (There’s a really cool segment with Stephanie and Triple H looking at the trophy and talking about the presentation of the trophy with Cody and Dustin Rhodes before the show.) After the match, we get Cody’s speech and then see Corbin backstage, a bit gutted that a trophy was being presented and he wasn’t part of it. The guy is competitive.

Dana Brooke: Dana’s mom visits before the show and helps her prepare for the show. She and her mom visit with Tara, the NXT physical therapist, who explains the injury is a pectoral tear and she can work through it. Dana guts out the match with Asuka and does really well, getting praise backstage.

Apollo Crews: Before the show, Triple H and Apollo talk about a new finisher for him. He has a match with Tyler Breeze, who he repeatedly puts over in interviews, and beats him with his new finisher – which is basically a back suplex spun into a power-bomb. It looks cool.

Bayley: The show caps off with highlights from the Bayley/Sasha Iron Man Match, which is edited to look like the most epic match in history. Afterwards Bayley and Sasha get flowers and hug and it’s all very nice and emotional.

After the show, Triple H has a meeting with the agents and producers and praises the show, noting they basically made four acts into stars (Apollo Crews, Dana Brooke, Asuka, and Jason Jordan and Chad Gable) in one show, one of which was somebody who lost. Then he heads to the all-talent meeting, where he praises the talent and says that Dusty would be proud of all of them. Then he calls Tyler Breeze down to the front of the meeting and announces that Breeze has been called up to the main roster, leading to a standing ovation from the assembled NXT talent.

The episode ends with a montage of updates on how everyone’s doing now: Dana had pectoral surgery and is rehabbing. Apollo and Corbin are still in NXT and working on their promo skills. Jordan and Gable are one of NXT’s most popular teams and might get called up soon. Sami Zayn returned to action on the European tour. Bayley is still NXT women’s champion and beat Nia Jax in London to retain the title in a match Jax dominated. Bayley hopes to get her call-up soon. Tino, ZZ and the others are still working hard at the Performance Center to pursue their WWE dreams. Tyler Breeze made his debut on the main roster, with the last image shown on Breaking Ground being Breeze coming through the curtain and facing the crowd as Michael Cole and JBL react to his entrance on commentary.

Final Thoughts: This episode was good enough to make me wonder why they spent nine episodes spinning their wheels to get here. It was really focused and somewhat resembled the superb WWE 24 series, which tended to focus on a single event and drill down into the events surrounding it. The emphasis on the importance of the TakeOver events as a means of getting to the main roster really helped make this episode seem really important. The focus on the handful of NXT stars that we’ve gotten to know and care about – rather than random people like Josh, Nhooph or ZZ – really made the episode feel important rather than something crammed with random segments to fill the time. It’d be great if every episode was this focused next season, because then the show could be something special.

    Thumbs up

Best Match: Kazuchika Okada vs Hiroshi Tanahashi

    Worst Match: New Japan Rambo

The New Japan Rambo was exactly what I expected it to be, until the last 10 minutes or so. There were some fun surprises, Haku being the best of them, but Sakuraba coming out was cringe-inducing and everything after that was just hard to keep track of. This match could have been used, as it was last year with Nagata, to set up a new challenger for a secondary title on one of the New Beginning shows, but I can’t see any big Jado matches coming up so the 40 minute Rambo came off as a bit of a waste of time. *1/4

The Jr. Tag Title match was a great opener, and even better than the match last year. Unlike last year, the crowd really got into this and were legitimately invested in all teams, particularly Matt Sydal and Ricochet. As with most Jr. Tag matches, it didn’t matter who won, and the Young Bucks were as good a choice as any of the others. ***3/4

As someone who has never watched ROH before, I was intrigued to see the Briscoes in action after hearing all the hype surrounding their New Japan debuts. I was let down. Immensely. This match somehow managed to suck all the life out of the crowd that the Jrs had created, and the title win came off as meaningless as the introduction of the belts themselves. I was skeptical to begin with about a Trios title, but I thought it could add some juice to the undercards on these shows. How wrong I was. The only juice in this match was ringside in a red New Japan spray jacket. This sucked. 1/2*

The ROH World Title match was okay, but it was hard to care about Jay Lethal having seen no hype on New Japan shows for his appearance. There’s so many foreigners drifting in and out of the company that some promotional vignettes would be really useful when someone like the ROH World Champion show up in the Tokyo Dome. The match was fine but already at this point the interference was starting to become frustrating. **1/4

KUSHIDA and Kenny Omega managed to turn an absolute trainwreck at the start into an exciting and thrilling Jr. Heavyweight title match. In case this show needed more Bullet Club interference, KUSHIDA just had to be beaten up before the match and hit with trash cans by The Young Bucks. Eventually this turned around, as the nearfalls were believable and KUSHIDA was incredible in making you root for him. Hot finish made this a really enjoyable match after all. ***3/4

The tag title match was the best thing on the show at this point. Honma and Anderson were great together, and Makabe and Gallows brought intensity while not being overexposed and making the match stale. The babyfaces won, as they should have, and we finally close the door on the LONG reign of Guns and Gallows. For a month at least. ****

Goto and Naito was a good match with some exciting drama towards the end, but once again interference hurt the quality. Goto winning has to set up an IWGP Title match with Okada, seeing as Goto beat him in G1 and they haven’t crossed paths since. The result says a lot about where New Japan sees Tetsuya Naito – an upper mid carder who is good for a couple G1 upsets and not much else. ***3/4

Ishii and Shibata was when the show moved from good to great. These two were obviously going to just go out there and beat the shit out of each other, but they really turned it up a notch for the Dome. It’s great to see Ishii get put in such an important slot on Wrestle Kingdom for the first time, and even better to see Shibata win his first singles title since coming back to New Japan. They’ll probably have a rematch at one of the February shows, and if this match is any indication of what it might bring, the NEVER Openweight Championship is in good hands for 2016. ****1/2

If anyone doubted the ability of AJ Styles to put on a great performance in his current physical condition, this match proved them emphatically wrong. As soon as Nakamura started working over the back, it was clear that Styles was working as a babyface, or at least not as a heel. It was paced tremendously, as the tension built up to the complete insanity of the last five minutes, as New Japan main events so often do. This may not have had the standout moments of the Nakamura-Ibushi match from last year, but as a match it was certainly on a similar level. ****3/4

Kazuchika Okada vs Hiroshi Tanahashi was perhaps the best wrestling match I have ever witnessed. I was so invested in Okada’s rise. I felt legitimately anxious with every dragon screw leg whip. I felt, watching this match, how I did as a young child watching my heroes chasing victory in a pro wrestling ring. I felt like this was real. If this was your first time watching Okada and Tanahashi, you wouldn’t get it. Some may say that’s a slight on the match, but I disagree. This was the match that 30,000+ screaming Japanese fans in the Tokyo Dome wanted to see. This was the perfect climax to a 4-year long rivalry. There was no better way for Kazuchika Okada to become the Ace of New Japan Pro Wrestling. This was an all-time classic.

There were so many moments in this match that stood out. From Okada ducking Tanahashi’s slap only 30 seconds into the match, to the constant targeting of Okada’s leg, to the closing sequences of countered Rainmakers, German suplexes, Tombstones, and High Fly Flows.

If you didn’t like this match, as many Twitter users and attention-seekers claim to, it’s time to find a new interest. Pro wrestling must not be for you. Because this was professional wrestling at its finest, a match that didn’t need insane dives, or tables smashing, or Bullet Club interference, to draw real emotion from the Tokyo crowd, and from New Japan fans around the world.

This match surpassed everything else on this incredible show. This match surpassed any other Tanahashi-Okada match. To me, this match surpassed any match in history. *****

Wrestle Kingdom 10 was fucking great.

    Brian Jackson

I ordered the network yesterday specifically for the top two matches.

After watching them, the rest of the show could be 98 WCW bad and still be THUMBS UP, but I’ll hold off on picking a best and worst match.

Ordering was easy. The main event was showing at 0600cst when I logged in. I kept checking for availability on my iPhone, and started watching the archived broadcast at 0650. Little bit of delay on my desktop, no problem with the iPhone at all.

Styles-Nakamura was a shade behind last year’s Ibushi-Nakamura, about 4 3/4 stars. While he did a lot, I think you could tell AJ was holding back some, and while I was more excited about that match than the main event going into it, I never thought AJ was going to win.

Tanahshi-Okada was 5 stars, good candidate for Match of the Year, even better than last year’s main event. Great ebb and flow, brutal physicality, loved how they used each other’s finishers. I was rooting for a changing of the guard match, and they more than provided it.

I can only hope they keep Okada the champ for a year and do a long buildup to a Nakamura challenge at WK11.

My only problem with the broadcast was Striker and Tatsu adding practically nothing on commentary. Jim Ross could have overcome it, but Kevin Kelly wasn’t strong enough to. Thankfully the action spoke volumes on its own.

Best match: Nakamura (c) v. Styles

Three tremendous matches to end the night highlighted a pretty
spectacular show.  A little too much interference hindered some
excellent matches early, but thankfully it did not last the whole
night.  The last three fights were all super and very different from
each other.  The main event, while not my MOTN, felt more like a mask
match than a title match and had the biggest ‘big fight’ feel of any
    match in some time.

I watched the Japanese stream on NJPW.  I experienced some buffering
issues early on in the event, but they were quickly resolved by watching
    on a 1-2 minute delay.

    UFC 195: Thumbs Up

    Best: Lawler/Condit

Worst: One of the first three FS1 prelims. Those weren’t memorable enough to even guess.

    WK10:

    Best: Shibata/Ishii & Tanahashi/Okada

    Worst: Never 6-Man

Once again best show of the year will be on 1/4. Can’t see anything beating what this was top to bottom. And the final three matches were just phenomenal all around. That’s really rare. NJPW didn’t even throw in a “cool down” match between them.

There wasn’t a “bad” match on the entire card. Even the pre-show battle royale was fun. Wrestle Kingdom constantly delivers.

Thumbs WAAAAY up.  Just an incredible show, on par with WK9.

Best Match: Probably Nakamura vs. Styles by a hair, but the main event was right up there too

Worst Match: Six-Man Tag, but even that was fun.  There was not a bad match on this show.

I’ll need to rewatch the whole thing to let it sink in, but as I said, this show was up there with WrestleKingdom 9 as one of the best PPVs I’ve ever seen.  The four-plus hours just flew by and the New Japan roster proved once again how far ahead of WWE they are.  I can’t imagine WrestleMania 32 even coming close to this.

Nak vs. AJ and the main event were easily 4.5 stars if not better, Ishii vs. Shibata was 4+, and Omega vs. Kushida was around 4.  Everything else hovered around 3, but not a single throwaway match on the card (except the Rumble which I skipped).

If you haven’t subscribed to NJPWWorld.com, I can’t give a strong enough recommendation.  You won’t see a better PPV in 2016 I’m willing to bet.

    Best match: Shibata/Ishii
Worst match: Jr Tag Title four way

Well…this show was pretty lousy outside of the NEVER and IWGP Intercontinental Title matches. People will heap praise on it because it’s New Japan and it’s the Tokyo Dome show, but this show was really not good. I did not think it was possible for me to enjoy a Dome Show less than the 2010 one (and I’m sticking to shows titled “Wrestle Kingdom” for that, I certainly didn’t hate this show like I did Wrestling World 1997, for example) but here we are. Though the last three matches delivered big time, the rest of the show was mostly out and out hot garbage.

New Japan Rumble was…not very good. It’s cool seeing Fujiwara and Koshinaka but the match really didn’t serve any real purpose and I could have really done without it. Wasn’t happy to see Sakuraba in the ring so soon after the Aoki fight either though they got him out quickly.

The main card opener sucked, I have no idea how you consider that a great match. They recycled spots from last year’s match and the new stuff wasn’t particularly good either. Fair enough the guys worked hard, but basically the same kind of opener three years in a row wears a little thin. I don’t need to see another one of those ever again.

NEVER Six Man Tag Title match was okay but not particularly great. Elgin/Lethal was fine, but nowhere as good as their WM Weekend 2013 match.

Omega/KUSHIDA was terrible, just like the other two matches they had last year. I like everything about Kenny Omega except his actual wrestling. He looks cool, has a cool theme song and even quoted Raul Julia M. Bison once but in the ring he bores me to tears. This really should have been KUSHIDA/Liger or something better. Oh and note that this was the THIRD MATCH on the main card to have outside interference. Hey remember your quote after Jarrett joined the Bullet Club about how a little American style was fine because it was different but a lot would kill this company? Yeah, there was a LOT of American style here and in the opener…and it sucked. It’s not different anymore, it’s just annoying and stupid. I don’t watch Japanese wrestling to see ROH style spotfests and I don’t watch Japanese wrestling to see TNA levels of interference in matches.

Guns and Gallows/GBH was good. Really thought they would give Honma the win. It was the usual G&G match, really no different than their usual match. Hopefully GBH don’t drop the belts back to Guns and Gallows next month. If I had to snowflake this, it’d be ***1/4 and comfortably the best thing on the show.

Naito/Goto was ANOTHER match with outside interference. That’s four out of six, for those keeping score. The match itself wasn’t that great until towards the end. Both guys worked hard and it was probably just below the tag title in terms of my match of the night to this point.

Shibata/Ishii won the day for me. This was everything I want out of pro wrestling. It was beautifully violent and felt like two guys going to war. People might cringe at the level of stiffness but that kind of stuff is why I fell for Japanese wrestling in the first place. This was the match of the night, total ***** match.

AJ/Nakamura was really good and they did the kind of match that will get ****3/4 or ***** ratings from a lot of people but it didn’t quite reach that level for me. They had a hell of a match to be sure, but it wasn’t a classic.

Tanahashi/Okada was weird. They clearly had the crowd from bell to bell but I was not interested in that match at all. The finishing run was the usual Okada finishing run and that’s nice but the first 2/3 of that match were just them doing stuff to fill time. There’s a lot of comparisons between this feud and Misawa/Kobashi and the difference is that Kobashi and Misawa could work a 43:00 match (and did on two occasions) and they could utilize time so that when the announcer said that 25 or 30:00 had passed, you couldn’t believe that much time had gone. Everything had some sort of purpose and a payoff in those old All Japan matches…and that didn’t happen here. This match dragged and dragged until the big moves came and by that point I just didn’t care anymore. This was easily my least favorite match of theirs. Obviously I’m in the minority but this did absolutely nothing for me.

    Ricky Schmidt

    Hey Dave,

Here are my thoughts based on a live in attendance perspective. I posted the same comments on the board too plus there are pictures there as well.

I just got back from the NJPW Tokyo Dome show. This was one hell of a great show live. The time flew by and there was not a second when the show felt like it was dragging. The Dome was definitely not sold out but I would say it was about the same as last year. I had to wait in the longest line I have ever seen to enter the Dome, which took about 30 mins. Also, the lines for the washrooms were insanely long too. I have never had either of these problems in previous years. There was no intermission which meant people had to sprint to the bathrooms between matches and would end up missing the start of the next match.

The crowd was into most of the matches with the exception of the opening Jr Tag Title match. All of my friends (all Japanese) were complaining because they didn’t know most of the wrestlers in the Jr Tag Title match and they had a tough time distinguishing everyone. They all hated that a 4-way match was a title match. Keep in mind all of my wrestling friends are old school wrestling fans. One guy has been to over 500 shows including every G1 Final and NJPW Tokyo Dome. I personally enjoyed the match. The crowd went nuts for the Makabe/Honma title win, Nakamura entrance and the entire Okada vs Tanahashi match.

When entering the buidling everyone in the crowd were given a small postcard size ticket for a free month to NJPW World. I managed to pick up 4 or 5 extra copies which had been discarded on the floor.

    Thanks for all your hardwork

    Hello,

I went to Tokyo Dome and it was my first live wrestling show to see ever and I must say, this was quite the great place to start.

    THUMBS UP

BEST MATCH: SHINSUKE NAKAMURA VS. A.J. STYLES FOR  THE IC TITLE

WORST MATCH: MARK & JAY BRISCOE & TORU YANO VS. YUJIRO TAKAHASHI & BAD LUCK FALE & TAMA TONGA FOR NEVER TRIOS TITLES

I’ll add some atmosphere commentary and missing bits from Dave’s report since I had the opportunity to be there live. I also overheard some Japanese reactions which I found interesting.

    NEW JAPAN RUMBLE

The people were really into it actually – there were many legends and some huge pops. Sakuraba got a huge pop but Momoka got the biggest one for sure. People were really surprised because she’s a major idol here. There were a lot of photo taking and glow stick wiggling happening. Some of the fans weren’t too happy when she started peddling her latest album as it doesn’t have anything to do with wrestling. And the people there wanted wrestling.

Before the next match, we got a promo for the next Doraemon cartoon movie. This is TV Asahi’s property and Tanahashi & Makabe took part in a promotional music video for it doing a cute dance. We got a live performance of it. Sadly, no Makabe or Tanahashi dance live but we got mascots performing it and the video on the big screen. People were snickering about this – the Japanese fans around me were quite upset about this. I thought it was cute and didn’t really care.

BOBBY FISH & KYLE O’REILLY VS. YOUNG BUCKS VS. ROCKY ROMERO & BARETTA VS. MATT SYDAL & RICOCHET FOR THE IWGP JR. TAG TITLES

The crowd around me wasn’t into it. I heard some comments like how it’s difficult to distinguish the wrestlers cause they’re all foreigners. Some folks behind me were wondering if the big guy was Cody Hall.

MARK & JAY BRISCOE & TORU YANO VS. YUJIRO TAKAHASHI & BAD LUCK FALE & TAMA TONGA FOR NEVER TRIOS TITLES

People seemed to enjoy Yano’s comedy but not much else.

JAY LETHAL VS. MICHAEL ELGIN FOR ROH TITLE

The crowd around me loved Elgin and cheered for him. The match was super entertaining live and the best thing thus far. It felt too short though.

KENNY OMEGA VS. KUSHIDA FOR THE IWGP JR. TITLE

Nothing to add here. Kushida was heavily cheered and this was the first huge pop of the night, when he won.

DOC GALLOWS & KARL ANDERSON VS.  TOGI MAKABE & TOMOAKI HONMA FOR IWGP TAG TITLES

I’m not super familiar with NJPW but Karl Anderson seemed to be the most over guy of the match. People were chanting his name and loved everything he did. More so than Elgin.

    HIROOKI GOTO VS. TETSUYA NAITO

The crowd was a bit more quite for this match but perhaps it was only my section.

TOMOHIRO ISHII VS. KATSUYORI SHIBATA FOR NEVER OPEN WEIGHT TITLE

This was the first really huge match of the night. Wow, it was a sight to see live. You just couldn’t turn your eyes off the match. This is where things got really hot and the crowd started going super crazy. The girls were cheering Shibata more and the men Ishii seemingly but they were both respected. On a funny side note, a couple next to me got in a bit of a mini-quarrel because the girl insisted on Shibata winning while the guy was into Ishii.

SHINSUKE NAKAMURA VS. A.J. STYLES FOR  THE IC TITLE

Live, this was match of the night for sure. It was freaking amazing from the start to the finish. The crowd loved every minute of it with all the near-falls and awesome wrestling. Nakamura was by far the most over guy in the building (people were wearing his shirts everywhere) but there were a lot of AJ Styles chants as well which I was surprised to hear. The match was executed perfectly with a lovely finish. Everyone went home super happy. The fist bump at the end was also well-received.

KAZUCHIKA OKADA VS. HIROSHI TANAHASHI FOR IWGP TITLE

The previous two matches were tough to follow and at the beginning, the crowd wasn’t as into this match as the previous ones. There were Tanahashi chants throughout though – a lot from women. Around the 20 minute mark, things changed though, everyone went nuts with the near-falls. It was amazing to watch and you couldn’t help but get into it, a fine story told and a nice passing of the torch indeed as Dave put it.

Okada’s entrance was awesome though! First, the music started and then glitched with a signal sound stopping completely after about 5-10 seconds. Then, all the lights went off. The crowd was puzzled. Suddenly Okada appears and his fake money bills start falling from the sky with the music being restarted. It was super cool to see and the people were amazed – what a creative entrance!

I don’t remember in detail but Gedo said that Okada is basically the best there is.

Okada added that he wants to say three things. Number one, Tanahashi is amazing. Number two, he’ll take New Japan to another level. Number three, nothing really. This got a laugh. Okada was super over, this felt like an amazing build and really makes you realize how inept WWE is at building talent.

    That’s that! Fantastic show!

    Sincerely,

    Jurgen Kald

Best Match: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs Kazuchika Okada

    Worst Match: New Japan Rumble

What an incredible show, top to bottom a great card and you could see how some matches on the undercard benefited greatly from not having to deal with the time constraints they had last year. (I thought that was most obvious with the Jr Heavyweight Tag match.)

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a show with a better final three matches. On first watch, my initial feeling was that Tanahashi vs Okada was my match of the night, but that might change on a rewatch.

I watched the show with the English commentary team, and in retrospect I suspect I would have enjoyed the show more with the Japanese announcers. Yoshi Tatsu didn’t seem like he was prepared for the job or really wanted to be out there. I felt bad for him at times and he was really awkward during the AJ/Nakamura match. Kevin Kelly was fine, but obviously doesn’t have the gravitas of Jim Ross last year. He also wasn’t able to temper Matt Striker’s bad instincts in the way Ross was at WK9. Realised whilst watching the show, that what I really don’t like about Striker as an announcer for New Japan is that he calls the shows like a smark rather than a sportscaster. Sometimes he’ll make an effective comment about how the wrestlers are applying holds, but then follows it up with a really dumb remark which undermines his credibility. Case in point “This match isn’t going to end with a signature move” in the main event. I also thought Striker’s comment at the start of Ishii vs Shibata, where he seemed to be using the match as justification to bomb the Middle East was a bizarre rhetorical leap. I hope New Japan uses the AXS team for English commentary next year.

    Hi Dave,

I’m not sorry I set the alarm clock this morning for this fantastic show. The first few hours were good, but the last part of the show was fantastic. Two thumbs up! BTW, I’m an anime fan so it was nice to see the Doraemon skit. Tanahasi and Makabe dancing was goofy, but fun.

    NEW JAPAN RUMBLE

Fun, but the wrestling wasn’t that good. However, it did what it supposed to do.

BOBBY FISH & KYLE O’REILLY VS. YOUNG BUCKS VS. ROCKY ROMERO & BARETTA VS. MATT SYDAL & RICOCHET FOR THE IWGP JR. TAG TITLES

Nice, high paced match. Sydal was the man of the match for me, but good job on everybody’s part. Nice to see they got a bit more minutes this time to do their stuff. Or did that only seem that way?

MARK & JAY BRISCOE & TORU YANO VS. YUJIRO TAKAHASHI & BAD LUCK FALE & TAMA TONGA FOR NEVER TRIOS TITLES

Better than expected, just a enjoyable little match. Tongo was great and is a class better than his partners.

JAY LETHAL VS. MICHAEL ELGIN FOR ROH TITLE

Lethal didn’t do that much for me this match, it seemed he only hit Elgin with offence after interference. I also believe that Lethal Injection is too contrived of a move to be a classic finisher. Elgin was good, but it felt to me that they went a bit too much from strength spot to power move.  The match dissapointed me greatly.

KENNY OMEGA VS. KUSHIDA FOR THE IWGP JR. TITLE

The first great match of the bunch. It was a bit of a let down that Taguchi was the mystery man in KUSHIDA’s corner, but I have to say that he did a good acting job. When Omega keeps his overacting to a minimum, he’s a good wrestler. It showed here. The right man won and I hope NJPW gives KUSHIDA a nice push this time.

DOC GALLOWS & KARL ANDERSON VS.  TOGI MAKABE & TOMOAKI HONMA FOR IWGP TAG TITLES

Luckily no interference this match. Great show by Honma taking all those hits and survive. Crowd was great for this match! Makabe got the pin so there are things left to do with Honma in the future, I think. Is he also big in Osaka? Maybe he can score the pin in the Jo Hall against Naito? Osaka seems to dislike Naito more than every other city…

    HIROOKI GOTO VS. TETSUYA NAITO

I feared the interference, but it got the cheaters in the end. Decent match. Naito is such a dickish heel, but I think he’s got to get a bit less tranquilo to win matches.

TOMOHIRO ISHII VS. KATSUYORI SHIBATA FOR NEVER OPEN WEIGHT TITLE

These guys can work this style the best, I even liked it better than Honma/Ishii. They had me invested from the get go and worked a beautiful match. Didn’t think Shibata would get the win, but it was a nice surprise to see him win here.

SHINSUKE NAKAMURA VS. A.J. STYLES FOR  THE IC TITLE

Super match, very different than the last match but every bit as good. I want to see Nakamura go after the IWGP belt, so I wouldn’t be sad if Styles won this match, but they were working so great that I automatically began to cheer for Shinsuke. Strange huh? I loved the armbar/styles clash spot, but this was a great bout overall.

KAZUCHIKA OKADA VS. HIROSHI TANAHASHI FOR IWGP TITLE

It was a bit difficult for me to get invested in this match after the previous two, but after a while they could follow them. Using your opponents finisher is always fun, just as they did here.

This was a fun card, while not all classics, all matches felt different. It made the show very easy to watch.

    Worst match: The Rumble

Best match: Pfff, this is a hard one to choose. The final three were great, but all in a different way. I think I choose Nakamura/Styles because they made me care who would win, while I didn’t have a real favourite before the match started (different seasons). I think that is the highest kind of praise you can give the workers.

    Dome Show – Thumbs up

Best Match – Okada vs Tanahashi

Worst Match – Yanu & Briscoes vs Tama Tonga, Bad Luck Fale & Takahashi

Overall I thought this was a great show.  The top three matches, in particular, were awesome and all very different matches.  I was a little disappointed in the Lethal/Elgin match, the crowd just didn’t seem into it which didn’t help.  The Goto/Naito match was also pretty disappointing because those 2 could have done much better it might have been better if we hadn’t seen all the other shenanigans in most of the matches before this one.

I don’t know if it tops last years because the constant jumping before the start was getting very irritiating. Commentary wasn’t as good as last year (for the obvious reason) Matt Striker continues to be really grating but he and Kevin Kelly are getting slightly better.  However, Yoshi Tatsu really wasn’t that well suited to his role.

Best Match: Kazuchika Okada vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi
    Worst Match: New Japan Rumble

The only negative with the show for me were the buffering issues (on
the Japanese language feed that I chose to watch over English) that
seem to have been widespread for people on New Japan World. What an
    outstanding event this was though.
