    Wednesday Daily Update

Ronda Rousey has been tapped to take over the Patrick Swayze role as the lead in a remaeke of “Road House.” Swayze played a well-educated bouncer who protected a small town in Missouri from a corrupt businessman. Terry Funk has a role in the original, which used to air all the time on TBS when WCW was still around. In fact, the movie helped get over the surprise of Funk attacking Ric Flair at Wrestle War ’89: It was less than two weeks away from release at the time, so fans “knew” Funk had retired to become an actor.

    —  Nhooph Al-Areebi is, thanks to Reddit, the latest NXT talent (or in the case of Jessicka Havok, NXT hopeful) to be outed as having posted various racially insensitive things on social media in the past. In her case, she was a teenager when she tweeted a few variations of the N-word among other things, including calling a black male wrestler her slave. She’s since deleted her Twitter account. If the lesson hasn’t been learned by now, don’t say this stuff, and if you did, clean it up when you’re trying to get into WWE.

    — Nick Diaz (marijuana test failure), Rousimar Palhares (holding submission too long after rpated eye raking), and Jake Shuelds (threw a punch off his back at Palhares right after the fight ended) will all be on the docket for hearings at the next Nevada State Athletic Commission meeting this Monday.

    — From Kris Zellner’s Lucha Report (full, illustrated version here): L.A. Park has been removed from all EMLL bookings for the immediate future after he used foul language after his match at Arena Mexico last Friday night. The promotion announced that Park’s actions didn’t meet the standards of their company and they can’t allow that lack of respect towards the fans. Park accepted his punishment and apologized to them so the promotion said that they left on good terms as well as saying that maybe down the road he may come back. Park will be replaced by Valiente on this Friday at Arena Mexico and Shocker on the 82nd Anniversario Show next Friday.

    — Tommy Dreamer announced that House of Hardcore’s New York City debut will be November 14th at the ELMCOR Center in Corona, Queens. That’s the same day as the Big Event fan convention in Elmhurst and the Jersey All Pro Wrestling anniversary show in Rahway, New Jersey. On the HOH card will be Yoshihiro Tajiri, Ethan Carter III, Rhino, Bobby Roode, Tommy Dreamer, Austin Aries, Chris Hero, Eric Young, Guido Maritato & Tony Mamaluke (The FBI), Thea Trinidad, Justin Roberts and more.

John Dodson is not happy with MMA fans blaming his loss to Demetrious Johnson on the bierh of his daughter.

PWG has released the first Battle of Los Angeles 2015 DVD trailer.

Newsday has an article about 50 NFL players who became pro wrestlers. Some of these aren’t entirely accurate.

    — CWE Canada has a “Girls, Girls, Girls” card Friday Sept 25th- Steinbach, MB. Location: Steinbach Legion Community Hall (294 Lumber Ave.).  Time: Doors Open 6:30pm, Bell time 7pm. Tickets: VIP First Access Ticket $20, General Admission $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Advance Tickets Available At: The Edge Bar & Nightclub (Inside The Frantz Inn, 1000 Main St.) Purchase tickets online at diyobo.com. Main Event  is an 8 Women Over The Top Rope Battle Royal, Intergender Tag Team Match features  Kat Von Heez & “The German Juggernaut” Moses Luke vs. Violet & “The Rebel” Bobby Collins, Bambi Hall vs. Roni Nicole, Sahara Se7en vs. Aja Perera , Ashley Frost vs. Gisele Shaw. Plus “The Coach” Kelly Russell hosts and much more!

    — From a reader: I attended the Raw in Tampa a few weeks ago. WWE sent me a survey today asking all kinds of questions about what I liked and didn’t like, and what I like and don’t like about the Network. But one question they asked was intriguing – it asked which PPV start time I would prefer out of 1PM, 5PM, 7PM and 8PM. Thought it was interesting.

Marc Raimondi is reporting at MMAFighting.com that the controversial unregulated Xplode Fight Series will start using th UMMAF (the American MMA sanctioning arm of the same organization that includes the IMMAF and KICK for kickboxing) as a third party sanctioning body. The UMMAF, which includes recognizable referees such as Steve Mazzagatti,  Kim Winslow, and Frank Trigg, typically does amateur cards but sees XFS as part of their mission since they run mixed amateur/pro events. Xplode has come under fire for booking extreme mismatches to help fighters (especially those from San Diego Combat Academy’s Team Hurricane Awesome and the now defunct Reign Training Center) pad their records, with many of the designated jobbers looking like they’re completely untrained.

    — Main event fight announcement from Bellator: After his explosive Bellator MMA debut, Hisaki Kato (5-1) will return to action on November 20 at WinStar World Casino and Resort in Thackerville, OK., to main event “Bellator 146” against Melvin Manhoef (29-12-1, 2 NC).The middleweight contest will serve as the main event of “Bellator 146: Kato vs. Manhoef,” which airs live on Spike at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT, while preliminary bouts will stream on Spike.com at 6 p.m. CT.

A judge has ordered the FBI to turn over the records of their investigation, and what Gawker is saying in court about what has and hasn’t been turned over paints a very interesting picture.

Also, now available for the first time on Kindle (meaning Kindle devices and anything with the Kindle app) is Fall Guys, the seminal 1937 book that has been described as being like the 1930s version of the Wrestling Observer. It was surprisingly not on Kindle already, so we put together a nice version with a full table of contents w/ chapter marks, proper formatting on everything, etc. Right now it’s available from the American, Canadian, and Australian Amazon/Kindle stores OR you can also buy it from anywhere in the world on PayHip, who will provide you with both Kindle and ePub (every other e-reader) format files, and you can either sideload them to your device or have them email it to your Kindle.

    Wednesday Daily Update

    — William E. Moore, the lawyer who represented Jimmy Snuka at his arraignment yesterday, told the Allentown Morning Call that not only was Snuka arrianged while wheelchair-bound and hooked to a feeding tube, but that he’s suffering from dementia stemming from decades of concussions. Due to a prior commitment, Moore will not be representing Snuka at trial if there is one.  He characterized Snuka as unintelligible and lacking any kind of recall, and is skeptical of the extent of Snuka’s involvement in his autobiography, but it was released three years ago and he was relatively coherent when he did his book tour. Interestingly, the article notes that Sharon Georgi, Snuka’s first wife who testified against him during the grand jury proceedings, was with him and his family when he surrendered to the police, and was also the one to post bail for him ($10,000 bond on $100,000 bail).

    — Adam Clark, who wrote the article that triggered the case getting a fresh look, did a video interview that’s available at LehighValleyLive.com.

    — Snuka’s WWE.com page was pulled after LehighValleyLive.com pointed out that it was still up, though he’s still listed on the Hall of Fame page.

LehighValleyLive.com and WABC-TV in New York both talked to members of Nancy Argentino’s immediate family about Snuka being charged.

The Allentown Mprning Call has a good timeline for the case that lays out the essential information.

USA Today’s “The Big Lead” blog is the first mainstream outlet to focus on Vince McMahon and his role in the case.

Irv Muchnick’s original article about the case is availablee on his website.

Dave has an article about Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera’s career and retirement at MMAFIghting.com.

    — News from Kris Zellner’s Lucha Report (full, illustrated version here):

L.A. Park told Medio Tiempo yesterday that he isn’t in EMLL for a long run and he only wants Rush’s hair that’s it. Park thinks that their apuestas match should be main eventing the Anniversario not Atlantis & Sombra because it’s a bigger match. Park said that he & Dr. Wagner Jr. are now the biggest stars there since they have come back although he thinks Wagner is a sellout for pandering to the fans and being friendly with the Ingobernales.

Mistico II will be a cast member on the TV Azteca/Telemundo reality variety show Si Se Puede where the cast of stars will try and do various forms of entertainment throughout the run such as dancing, magic, even beat boxing. I’m not sure if this is a show where they get voted off or what.

Volador Jr. vs. Johnny Mundo vs. Mephisto actually did happen in Los Angeles on August 30th and my dear friend Alfredo Esparza was there with this report

    — From Bellator:  Not one, but two must-see bouts have been added to the preliminary portion of “Bellator 143: Warren vs. Davis” on September 25 at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas, with the addition of undefeated Darrion “The Wolf” Caldwell (7-0) versus Shawn Bunch (4-1) and heavyweight action seeing Chase Gormley (12-4, 1 NC) against Dan “The Man” Charles (9-3). The contests will take place during the prelims of “Bellator 143: Warren vs. Davis,” which airs live on Spike at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT, while the opening portion of the event will stream on Spike.com at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.

The Pancakes and Powerslams podcast interviewed Dave Penzer this week. On the death of WCW: The way I learned about the end of the company is that somebody called me at home and said turn on the (WWE) website. I turned it on, and it was the [WWE] logo, right in the middle was “Purchases”, and on the bottom right-hand corner, it had the WCW logo. My heart sank, and I had tears in my eyes, I ain’t gonna lie to you. When you get to live your dream and possibly get it taken away, it’s not a fun thing. I went to Nitro in Panama City, and I decided to do the best that I could do. We didn’t know at the time that Shane McMahon was going to be there, we found out at the production meeting. I decided that I was gonna lay it all out on the table and let the WWE guys that were there see what I could do, and hope for the best. If it was the swansong, I was gonna enjoy it, and I did that.

    Figure Four Weekly:

The new issue of Figure Four Weekly is now up for subscribers (subscribe to the site here and get access to Figure Four, the Observer, tons of audio, and more) featuring a hands-on look at WWE 2K16 from the 2K/WWE media event last week. There are also notes on WWE’s lawsuit against their Thai TV partner, including how this type of litigation is familiar territory for WWE and one past suit is exceptionally bizaree. On top of that, we have all the usual stuff like Vinny’s reviews and international news from Dr. Lucha Steve Sims and and Alan”4L” Counihan.

Last week’s FREE Figure Four Weekly is still up with a look at the crazy story of why Gawker thinks the FBI may have helped Hulk Hogan cover up his racist and homophobic comments.

    Tuesday Daily Update

    — Here’s the recommended reading to catch up on Jimmy Snuka being charged with the 1983 murder of girlfriend Nancy Argentino:

    * The Allentown Morning Call’s 2013 article that led to the grand jury investigation.

    * Justice Denied, the ebook that Irv Muchnick wrote with Nancy Argentino’s family. All proceeds go to battered women’s charities.

    * The docket for the case.

    * Irv Muchnick’s site has the press release and grand jury presentment (w/ evidence) as PDFs

    * The Allentown Morning Call’s story on the charges and another from LehighValleyLive.com.

    * Sarah Cassi of LehighValleyLive.cm has done an excellent job providing up to date information on her Twitter account.

    * TMZ was first to obtain the grand jury record and apparently, Snuka’s changing story, including the differences between his police statement and the account in his book, is what swayed the grand jury.

    * The Morning Call talked to Irv Muchnick.

    — WWE issued this statement: “WWE expresses its continued sympathy to the Argentino family for their loss. Ultimately this legal matter will be decided by our judicial system.”

    — To clear up some confusion from what the Morning Call initially reported, Snuka was not arrested at home in New Jersey. He surrended into custody in Pennsylvania. They’ve since edited their article.

    — There’s a ton to go over, but from skimming the presentment and reading the mainstream articles so far, it looks like Snuka’s conflicting statements and history of domestic abuse were deciding factors on top of the forensic evidence. Snuka’s then-wife and Buddy Rogers’ widow are among the witnesses who testified.

Also, Irv Muchnick deserves a credit for staying on top of this story the way he did for so long. While it was known to MSG ringside regulars and some newsletter readers in the ’80s, it didn’t blow up until his article (written for the Village Voice, who never ran it) got attention in the late ’90s via his website.

    — Statement from The Gulfport Police Department about the arrest of Thomas “Bram” Latimer (he’s since been released): Professional Wrestler Arrested on Domestic Violence Charges

Gulfport, FL—On 8/30 at approximately 6:00 AM, officers responded to a call about a disturbance in an apartment at 3205 58th Street South. There they encountered Thomas R. Latimer and a woman who identified herself as his girlfriend. The officers observed evidence indicative of a physical altercation, and their investigation revealed that, after the couple had been arguing, the woman felt threatened and sought refuge in her bedroom. Latimer followed her into the bedroom, closed the door, and refused to allow her to leave. He then pushed the woman onto the bed and was holding her down by her neck. Latimer, who is a wrestler with TNA Impact Wrestling, was charged with domestic battery by strangulation and false imprisonment. Both are felony charges, and he is currently being held in the Pinellas County Jail.

    — UFC officially announced the retirement of Antoinio Rodrigo “Minotauro/Big Nog” Nogueira today. He’s getting a company ambassador job with the UFC.

    — Jim Ross has two articles about Scott Hall at FoxSports.com:
    * On Razor Ramon
    * On addiction and Recovery.

Paige VanZant talks about PEDs and women’s WMMA at MMAFighting.

    — From Allan Blackstock: Preston City Wrestling (PCW) ran a show outside of the Preston City limits for the first time in their 4 year history on Saturday (8/29/15). This was a bought show by Blackpool Council and was free to attend. I estimated there were approx 1,200 in the ballroom at any one time. This is the same venue that NXT will be running on December 13th. The venue has a capacity of 3,000, Viper & Mr Anderson def. So Scandalous (Ryan Smile & Damian Dunne), Mickie James def. Toni Storm, The Wolves def. Martin Kirby & Joey Hayes, Dave Mastiff def. Nick “Magnus” Aldis, Lionheart def. Sha Samuels by disqualification, Noam Dar def. Ashton Smith by submission, Dave Rayne def. Gilligan Gordon, Mr Anderson & Too Cool def. Bubblegum, Rampage Brown & Iestyn Rees It was a family show with all the faces going over. Match of the day was the Wolves over Kirby/Hayes in a ***1/4 match.

    — Pro Wrestling Eclipse Rocktoberfest has ben postponed until Oct 4th.

    — No new WWE DVDs this week, but Monday Night War vol. 2 comes out a week from today on DVD and Blu-Ray.

    — NWA Classics added a Midnight Express vs. Fantastics match today.

    — Kris Zellner and myself were joined by Les Moore on the latest Between the Sheets podcast, covering August 25-31, 1991. Topics include SummerSlam ’91/Ultimate Warrior being suspended by the WWF,  Randy Savage threatening to quit, Ric Flair threatening to sue a newsletter writer, and much more.

    MONDAY’S NEWS UPDATE

    • Bryan and I will be back tonight talking all of the craziness that has taken place today, as well as Raw.  You can ask questions for tonight’s show to mailbag@wrestlingobserver.com
    • Some more notes on the shooting in front of the Performance Center.  The guy who was shot, 29-year-old Armando Montalvo, was a real weirdo that area officers knew well as did WWE staffers.  This was the third time he had come to the Performance Center this month.  Before that, he urinated on the building.  He even posted a video of him mixing his own feces with low fat milk to put in a bucket to pour it on he building.  He had posted videos where he was obsessed with A.J. Lee (Lee was not the person he was fixated on during the past month).  On more than one occasion he dressed up like a wrestler, banged on windows, and said he would kick everyone’s ass because they wouldn’t hire him.  At one point, he carried a chain to the Performance Center and police had to draw their guns to subdue him.  Five days ago, he did another video of himself outside the building saying he was going to ask for a job.  There were two deputies in the area when someone from the Performance Center called police and everyone involved was well aware of Montalvo, who has a long record for various crimes including assault on an officer and violation of a restraining order.  He looked like he was going to attack Cpl. Steve Wahl and there was fear he had a knife, and Wahl backed off 75 to 100 feet before shooting the man in the stomach.  He underwent emergency surgery and his injuries may be life threatening.

    SUNDAY’S NEWS UPDATE

    • Bryan and I will be back tonight talking Battle of Los Angeles, Rousey in Australia, Raw tomorrow and the rest of the latest news with Wrestling Observer Radio.  You can ask questions for tonight’s show to mailbag@wrestlingobserver.com
    • Want to mention all the nice people I was able to meet the last two nights at the PWG show in Reseda.  As mentioned in the report, last night’s show was one of the best live events I’ve ever seen.  It’s just amazing the talent level at both shows, from all around the world.
    • The Discovery Network station Discovery en Espanol and well as the Discovery Network station in Romania and Eurosport in Finland are all listed as dropping Impact.
    • Zahra Schreiber, the girlfriend of Seth Rollins and a WWE developmental talent was covered as showing an Instagram photo from 2012 which showed a medal with the swastika on it in the background.  She defended it saying the swastika meant prosperity and meant that long before Hitler.  She worked last night’s house show in Fort Pierce as the manager with Solomon Crowe.
    • Stevie Richards made a surprise appearance at last night’s ROH show in Atlanta and did a pull-apart angle with Jay Lethal.  Taelor Hendrix was in the corner of Christopher Daniels  & Frankie Kazarian & Lethal.
    • Cliff Compton was scheduled to wrestle Mark Briscoe but couldn’t appear as he was hospitalized with a seizure.  He was in the building and rushed via ambulance to the hospital.  He was released from the hospital late last night.
    • Kevin Iole reported that UFC was trying to book Joanna Jedrzejczyk against Valerie Letourneau as the No. 2 fight for the 11/15 show in Melbourne, Australia at Etihad Stadium.  However that isn’t likely since Letourneau was injured in her win last week over Maryna Morosz in Saskatoon.  Claudia Galdelha, who is also injured, wasn’t happy to hear that there could be a title fight before her,  Gadelha said she’d be ready to fight in December or January.  It makes sense to put Jedrezjczyk on the same show as Ronda Rousey, who now headlines that show.
    • In a post on Friday night, it was written that the stadium holds 90,000.  It will actually be set up for 70,000.  It’s never held that many in the past.
    • A fan tried to jump Dean Ambrose on Tuesday night at the Smackdown tapings in Providence.  There was footage on the www.tmz.com . site showing a guy who had gotten over the barricade and was running toward Ambrose from behind but security, right before he got to Ambrose, tackled him.  The report stated that the fan was holding a sharp object.
    • Bellator announced Phil Davis vs. Emanuel Newton and Linton Vassel vs. King Mo Lawal will be the first round pairings at the lightheayvweight tournament on 9/19 in San Jose.  Both will be two round fights, and the winners come back for three-round fights later in the show.
    • A first-ever Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Low Ki match is scheduled for Jersey All Pro Wrestling on 11/14 in Rahway, NJ.  At one time these two were scheduled to feud in WWE in a major program, but plans changed long before it ever came close to happening .  Also announced for that show are The Hardys, Konnan & Homicide & Hernandez at LAX,. MVP, Jack Evans and Candice LaRae.
    • I believe there is a pre-sale for the Royal Rumble on 1/24 in Orlando at Amway Arena with the code rumble16.  The pre-sale definitely started at about 10:15 p.m. last night.  Tickets go on sale to the public on 11/20.
    • Rich Brennan was announced as the new full-time lead announcer on Smackdown.
    • The WWE Network’s airing of SummerSlam that is up right now has edited out The New Day’s song parody of “Empire State of Mind.”  They also edited out Brock Lesnar flipping off Undertaker right before the finish of that match.  That’s weird because there are tons of episodes of Steve Austin flipping people up in the archives (thanks to Leon Peters).
    • Hulk Hogan talked about wanting to run for Vice President on the ticket with Donald Trump.  Note that as another thing that isn’t about to happen.
    • In Google searches for yesterday, Shane Moseley was No. 12 with 50,000 and Leo Santa Cruz was No. 14 also with 50,000.
    • UIPW has a show today in East Los Angeles at the UIPW Auditorium featuring a three-way for their title with Volador Jr.. defending against Mephisto and Johnny Mundo.  That’s an interesting political match since Volador and Mephisto are headliners for CMLL and Mundo headlines for AAA and Lucha Underground.
    • United Wrestling Coalition on 9/5 in Wrightstown, NJ at Kelly’s Banquet Hall.
    • The funeral for Professor Elliot Maron will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Old Montifiore Cemetery at 121-83 Springfield Blvd., in Queens, NY, which will be a grave side service (thanks to Mike Lano).
    • World League Wrestling from last night in Troy, MO:  Justin D’Air won Battle Royal, Brandon Espinosa & Kyle Roberts b Kevin Lee Davidson & Hannibal, Trevor Murdoch & Brian Breaker b Moonshine Mantell & Josef Von Schmidt, Jon Webb b Ace Hawkins, Heather Patera b Stacy O’Brien 2/3 falls to win the women’s title, Superstar Steve Fender & Derek McQuinn b Dave DeLorean & Jayden Fenix-DQ, Leland Race d Steve Anthony.  Anthony is the NWA jr. champion who is headed to New Japan this month to defend the title against Tiger Mask.
    • Ric Flair was in the area in Missouri working with Harley Race in a training camp.
    • Dan Lennaard is looking for contact information on Outback Jack.  Lennard is at danhelen@idx.com.au
    • Gold Rush Wrestling from last night in Pacifica, CA with the one-night Lady Luck tournament:  Boyce LeGrande b Shawn Gunn, Boyce LeGrande b Corey Kresse, Brittany Wonder b Shotzi Blackheart, Kikyo Nakamura b Lisa Lace,Thunder  Rosa b Luchadora Dutra, Cheerleader Melissa b Nicole Savoy, Thunder Rosa b Kikyo Nakamura-DQ, Cheerleader Melissa b Brittany Wonder, Jeff Cobb & Sione Finau b Suburban Commandos, Cheerleader Melissa b Thunder Rosa to win the Lady Luck tournament (thanks to Matt)

    Saturdayday Daily Update

    — As noted earlier:

Hulk Hogan will be appearing on Good Morning America and Nightline Monday to apologize and rehab his image. He told a TMZ cameraman that  “The only hard feelings I’ll have for Vince McMahon is when I get him back in the ring again. It’ll be a replay of WrestleMania 19″ and “I want to be Trump’s running mate.” With the type of comments that are getting Trump heat, comments like that, even jokingly, may be unwise.

Ronda Rousey vs. Holly Holm has been moved to November 15’s UFC 193 in Melbourne dur to an injury to welterweight champion Robbie Lawler, who was set to defend against Carlos Condit. It doesn’t look like the women’s strawweight

Sting will open Raw on Monday.

UFC issued a statement last night saying that “an investigation into allegations of domestic violence against heavyweight Travis Browne” had “found inconclusive evidence to support claims of alleged domestic violence involving Browne.” He’s no longer suspended and can be booked in fights again. Thefull statement, which was released last night during the Bellator card and before the Rousey announcement, has some details on the law firm used and things of that nature. Browne’s estranged wife, Jenna Renee Webb, had posted photos of bruises on Instagram and initially didn’t say what happened until a fan directly asked her if Browne had hurt her. Disucssion of the allegations had heated uthis past week after Webb wrote on Twitter that Browne is dating Glendale Fighting Club teammate Ronda Rousey, who just got a ton of attention for taking shots at Floyd Mayweather’s history f domestic abuse convictions.

Webb issued a statement to WomensMMA.cm:

I told them the truth, I gave them photos, I gave them a dated and detailed journal, and how they came up with those results is beyond belief. The investigator got this info and helped the UFC come to this conclusion. My family and I are totally baffled. It just shows what an abused person from a close family in Florida faces when they go up against an ex-FBI investigator, Campbell & Williams, and the UFC. They have more money than we do. They appear to be the winners. We believe that in the end truth prevails.

Watch UFC lightweight and welterweight fighter Benson Henderson get tapped out during the ADCC ubmission grappling tournament.

Marc Madison talks to Sam Shaw. Shaw on TNA’s brief flirtation with OVW as its developmental program: The developmental program for TNA at OVW was very short lived and changes were always happening. There was no real structure I guess you could say. It was sort of like here we have training a couple of days a week and you have 4 or 5 shows a week which is tremendous because you are getting into that mode of working each and every day and I think that it was a tremendous learning experience. I went into the whole OVW experience thinking that I was already trained really well coming from Curtis Hughes and then coming from Team 3D academy for four years. Getting signed with TNA and then I thought I had to go back and train some more? Destroy my body and this and that. I was there for practically a year and I feel like I learned a tremendous amount in that time and I look back on it as a very fond memory for me.

Soctt Fishman talks to Dolph Ziggler at the WWE 2K16 event.
