  • Daily Update: TNA Slammiversary in Orlando, Adam Cole, and Trump

Just want to express my sadness and sympathy for the horrible tragedy in Orlando. That goes ahead and beyond any other news.

If you are in Orlando, the Red Cross is asking for blood donations, especially O negative, O positive and AB. From what I understand, the lines of people volunteering to give blood were long all over the city.

By coincidence, TNA is running in Orlando tonight with its Slammiversary show and it must be tough to do so under the circumstances. The show is the biggest show TNA has done in a long time, built up for several weeks. We’ll be doing live coverage on the site starting at 8 p.m.

For those in France, TNA will air live on SFR Sports 2 tonight at 2 a.m. local time. SFR Sports is the new name of MCS, which has aired TNA programming for the past six years.  It will be replayed on 6/19 at 8:40 p.m.

TNA usually announces the newest member of its Hall of Fame at the Slammiversary show, but there is talk the announcement will be delayed until Tuesday night’s Impact and teased tonight.

We’re looking for your thoughts on tonight’s TNA Slammiversary show, so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match Dave@WrestlingObserver.com.

We’re looking for reports on today’s WWE shows in Baton Rouge (Dean Ambrose, Kevin Owens, Rusev, Enzo, Cass, Kane, Big Show, Braun Strowman, Erick Rowan, Sami Zayn, Dudleys, Lane, Sasha Banks), Lake Charles, LA (Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins, A.J. Styles, Sheamus, Dolph  Ziggler, Charlotte, Alberto Del Rio,Natalya, Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson, Usos, New Day), Progress in London, NXT in Derby, UK, at the Download Festival, Lucha Underground in Los Angeles and ROH in Milwaukee at the Turner Hall Ballroom (Finals of tag wars with Mark & Jay Briscoe vs. Beer City Bruiser & Silas Young vs. All Night Express, Christopher Daniels vs. Kamaitachi plus the finals of Tag Wars) to NewsTips@WrestlingObserver.com.

    SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

For those of you who are hockey fans, or aren’t I want to mention the passing of Gordie Howe, Mr. Hockey. He was one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, and the biggest star of the long era between Rocket Richard and Bobby Orr.

Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer Radio covering the news from the weekend including TNA, WWE plus taking e-mail questions you can send tomailbag@wrestlingobserver.com.

Adam Cole will be off tonight’s ROH show in Milwaukee as he was last night’s show in Hopkins, MN, due to being hospitalized with pneumonia.

A story I did on Marc Ratner, who was elected to the boxing Hall of Fame today. A few pro wrestling tidbits in it including some back story on Vince McMahon’s going to Ratner for credibility to do a legit show featuring some big names in 2003.

Donald Trump at a rally in Richmond, VA on Friday talked about having sports celebrities speak at the Republic convention instead of politicians like usual. Trump talked about getting great sports people who like him a lot, mentioning Bob Knight, the former Indiana basketball coach, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Brian France and Dana White. Interesting is he didn’t mention Vince McMahon. He specifically asked the crowd if they knew who Dana White was, and then said all of those guys were winners and champions. Trump made a jab at Chris Christie, who spoke at length at the 2012 convention saying how he spent more time promoting himself than the nominee. Trump said that our country needs to see winners, and that we don’t see winners anymore. He said we have clowns running our country and people who don’t know what they’re doing.

We’ve got Revolution Pro results and hopefully a report up later on the big show in London at York Hall:  Marty Scurll b Noam Dar, Pete Dunne b Martin Stone to keep the cruiserweight title, Big Damo b Big Daddy Walter, Will Ospreay b Mike Bailey, Josh  Bodom b Chris Hero, Charlie Garrett & Joel Redman wont he British tag titles from Sha Samuels & James Castle, Kurt Angle b Zack Sabre Jr.  Angle vs. Sabre was about 9:00.  Ospreay vs. Bailey evidently tore the house down.  Announcements were made for upcoming matches with Bodom vs. Tomohiro Ishii and Sabre vs. Katsuyori Shibata.

    WWE

    • Dwayne Johnson will be appearing Thursday night on the Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon to promote the movie “Central Intelligence” which debuts this coming weekend. He’ll also be on the Graham Norton show on Thursday night at 11:30 p.m. on BBC America.
    • Tomorrow’s go-home Raw show is going to have a tough time as there is no return of John Cena to counteract what could be the deciding game of the NBA Championship series with the Warriors up 3-1 over the Cavs.
    • Paul Levesque left the NXT tour after yesterday’s shows to head to China for WWE business. Levesque was honored yesterday at the Download Festival with the Golden Gods Spirit of Lemmy Award. Levesque and Lemmy were friends and Lemmy performed his entrance music, including on some WrestleManias.
    • Levesque will be interviewed by bodybuilder and trainer Dave Palumbo on the RX Muscle web site live tomorrow at Noon Eastern time. Palumbo is the nutrition guy for Levesque, Stephanie McMahon and has also worked with Linda McMahon in the past. He’s very well informed on the subject. (thanks to Jim Kerr)
    • From the Evolve stuff over the weekend it’s confirmed that Tony Nese has been added to the cruiserweight classic tournament.
    • A very controversial interview from Rene Dupree and also quotes from the former Rodney Mack regarding Chris Nowinski and his business relationship with WWE which Nowinski has said has no foundation here.

    • Brock Lesnar not only will be wearing a Reebok uniform when he fights Mark Hunt, but his nationality listed on his uniform will be Canadian with a Canadian flag. Lesnar now lives on a farm in Saskatchewan. I wonder if he can now be the next Gene Kiniski as a pro wrestler called Canada’s Greatest Athlete. Mike Sharpe doesn’t count because he was a spoof and when Kiniski got the name the reporter who gave it to him was serious.
    • Josh Barnett talks his new movie “Never Back Down” at the G-1 Climax tournament.

    MISCELLANEOUS

    • Kazuchika Okada was backstage yesterday at the Lucha Underground tapings. He did a photo posing with Rey Mysterio Jr. He was in California on a vacation between dates as New Japan is off until Sunday’s Dominion show.

  • Daily Update: Bobby Roode NXT debut, Teddy Hart, Slammiversary

Amid a quiet weekend in the world of combat sports, the calm got disrupted a bit Saturday afternoon with news that former TNA World Champion and NXT TakeOver background regular Bobby Roode made his promotional debut at the organization’s two day run at the UK-based Download Festival. Here’s a look at his entrance.

Roode downed Angelo Dawkins in his debut, and could be appearing Sunday as NXT has four hours of matches booked at the Festival. He didn’t appear on last Thursday’s TV tapings, but could be a presence via the magic of videotape with an official contract signing, a promo, etc.

So now what? With many of the top NXT talents expect to be brought up to WWE when the brand extension happens in July, NXT will still need to keep the cupboard stocked with a few veterans to mix with the up and comers. There’s also the concern of WWE bringing up too many talents and not having a plan on what to do with them — something that has plagued them in the past.

Saturday was a nice step forward for Roode and it will be fun to see how NXT debuts him and what the vision is for his career throughout 2016. With more of an opportunity to make an, ahem, impact in the WWE system than ever before, he picked a good time to explore his free agency options after what felt like a lifetime in TNA.

    SATURDAY NEWS UPDATE

Canadian authorities reportedly dropped criminal charges against Teddy Hart stemming from sexual assault allegations in 2014. The case apparently lacked criteria needed for it to proceed. An attorney representing Hart says his client always maintained his innocence. Hart also signed a peace bond to not have any contact for two years with the two women who accused him of the charges. His attorney said Hart has no interest in contacting them.

Evolve runs their second iPPV in as many nights, heading to Orlando for an 8 PM start for Evolve 62. It looks like a fun show featuring their champ Timothy Thatcher, a five-way WWE cruiserweight tourney preview where Tony Nese can grab a spot if he wins, an ECIII open challenge, and more. Here’s a look at last night where Chris Hero made his presence felt.

In an update on the manslaughter trial of a Pennsylvania man accused of causing the death of an 18-month-old by imitating wrestling moves, a judge will not allow the prosecution to show jurors computer-generated videos of the moves. If the 21-year-old man on trial takes the stand to testify, the judge may allow the images shown during cross-examination. The injuries suffered were allegedly from the defendant imitating Undertaker’s Last Ride and Rock’s Rock Bottom. The defense says the death was an accident. The trial is set to begin on Wednesday.

    FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

Thanks to everyone for all the nice words on this week’s issue and the Ali story. I really appreciate it.

Maria Kanellis was announced as being pulled from Sunday’s Slammiversary show due to a broken hand. She was scheduled against Gail Kim.

If you’re around a computer around 11 p.m. Eastern tonight so you check out the last two matches on tonight’s Arena Mexico show. For atmosphere, it’s the closest thing to old school wrestling and the guys in those matches, if anything, do far too much to entertain the audience. Some of the trios matches of late have been beyond anything seen here as far as eye opening babyface comebacks go.

The next Stone Cold Podcast on the WWE network will be on 6/20 with A.J. Styles.

Smackdown did its lowest numbers to date on USA last night with 1,996,000 viewers going against the Stanley Cup playoffs game five which did 5.01 million viewers.

Take a look at the Ethan Carter III & Drew Galloway angle that culminates in matches this weekend in Evolve here.

  • Daily Update: Muhammad Ali funeral, NXT TakeOver, Lesnar tested today

    Remembering The Greatest

Today, an estimated 14,000 people attended a Muslim funeral in Louisville, Kentucky for one of, if not the most, famous athletes in the world, Muhammad Ali. As a three-time heavyweight boxing champion of the world, Ali was best known for his gift of promos. Unfortunately, the Parkinsons disease that ended the champion’s career, also left him speechless for the last decade or so of his life. He was an exceptional athlete, a humanitarian, a political activist, but most of all, an entertainer. Ali knew how to promote a fight, and anyone coming up in the world of combat sports would be doing themselves a favor by learning from “The Greatest.”

Start by watching this is the fantastic HBO tribute to Muhammad Ali

Learn all about the birth of MMA by reading Josh Gross’ book on the Ali vs. Inoki fight, which is now available on Amazon.

Finally, Muhammad Ali will be forever linked with the world of pro wrestling

Impact on Tuesday night for the Slammiversary go-home show did 326,000 viewers, which is slightly above average since they went to one show a week.

A correction from last night’s show and the Observer, in the story on Kimbo Slice when I said they were looking at transferring him to Cleveland for a heart transplant, it was actually the Cleveland Clinic in Atlantis, FL, not Cleveland, OH.

This web site is having its annual get together from 7/7 to 7/10 in Las Vegas in conjunction with International Fight Week. For more information go on Facebook and search for 10th annual F4W convention.

  • WWE Smackdown results: Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho

    – Air Date: June 9, 2016
    – Location: Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita, KS

    – The Big News:

    Chris Jericho beat Dean Ambrose.

    – Show Recap:

    The Club Speaks

The Club came out to start the show as the announcers plugged Money in the Bank. Both Ranallo and Lawler said it was shaping up to be the greatest MITB ever. That was followed by AJ Styles saying the same thing moments later.

Styles said people were comparing Money in the Bank to WrestleMania, not just because Gallows and Anderson are fighting for the tag titles, but because of the dream match between himself and John Cena. He reminded us this could be the last time we see it because of the brand split. The crowd chanted “Cena” and there was no anti-Cena chant in response.

Styles said the past decade has been the Cena era, but it was time for a change, and the new era will begin when he takes out Cena. Styles said when he came to WWE, he let the company know that the Club was a package deal (revisionist history). He said they have dominated everywhere, he would beat Cena, and Gallows and Anderson would become the new tag champions.

They were interrupted by Enzo and Cass. Enzo did his usual promo. Cass said they would be the ones to win the titles, and he called Gallows and Anderson the “Mr. Clean dream team.” Anderson cut them off and said they’ve been all over the world for years proving that they’re the best. Anderson asked Enzo what he was doing all that time and mocked him for being the manager of a Hooters.

Enzo said yeah, of course he managed a Hooters, he’s a G. Gallows mocked him for going to sleep the last time they had a big match, and Styles actually started dancing like Enzo. Enzo said he risks it all every time he steps in the ring, he and Cass are all-in, they came here to get money, and at Money in the Bank they would beat the crap out of the Club. Cass called them soft.

Side note: There was a graphic on the stage for MITB, saying it was “a week from this Sunday.” They can’t just put the date?

Gallows & Anderson (w/AJ Styles) NC Enzo & Cass

The match started after a break, and New Day were at commentary. Big E said they brought a broom because they were going to clean up the tag division, which they called a mess. The Club worked over Enzo for a while when the Vaudevillains walked out on stage as they went to commercial.

Enzo nailed a tornado DDT on Gallows and made the hot tag to Cass, who hit Anderson with a fallaway slam, big boot and elbow drop. Gallows broke up the cover, so Cass booted him out of the ring. Anderson dumped out Cass and the Vaudevillains made their way down the ramp, so New Day left commentary to go after them.

The fight spilled into the ring, all four teams brawled, and the referee called for the bell. The segment ended with Enzo and Cass knocking the Vaudevillains out of the ring and standing tall, while New Day stared down the Club as they slowly backed away up the ramp.

They played the Muhammad Ali tribute video. Before it aired, Mauro Ranallo put over Ali as a three-time champion and called him a paragon of philanthropy. Jerry Lawler was grateful to have Ali in Memphis and said he told Lawler that he was the greatest of all time.

Renee Young asked Rusev and Lana about Rusev backing down from Titus O’Neil. Lana thought that was ridiculous. Rusev called himself the greatest of all time, not Muhammad Ali. Lots of heat. O’Neil interrupted, offended Rusev compared himself to Ali. O’Neil quoted Ali and told Rusev he was taking the U.S. Title.

Kevin Owens & Alberto Del Rio beat Cesaro & Sami Zayn via pinfall

Owens started with Zayn when Del Rio tagged himself in. Del Rio worked on his own for a while, but when he went to tag out, Owens told him he was doing a great job and left. As Owens walked backwards up the ramp, giving Del Rio two thumbs up, Zayn ran after him. Owens then sprinted to the back, which was funny.

That left Cesaro alone with Del Rio. Cesaro gave him a cannonball off the apron, jumped on the announce table to celebrate, and high-fived Ranallo. After a break, Lawler called Ranallo a homer for high-fiving Cesaro. After Cesaro hit a suplex, Zayn and Owens brawled back down the ramp. Zayn rolled Owens in the ring and he got into an argument with Del Rio.

Del Rio was about to leave, so Owens cut him off. Zayn used the opportunity to hit Owens with a dive. Del Rio tossed Zayn into the barricade, Cesaro gave Del Rio a running uppercut and suplex on the black mats. Cesaro followed with a flying crossbody for a near fall. Cesaro went for the big swing, but Owens superkicked him, Zayn suplexed Owens, Del Rio kicked Zayn, and Cesaro uppercut Del Rio.

Cesaro did the uppercut train on Del Rio and applied the sharpshooter, but let go to get rid of Owens. He tried a superplex on Del Rio, but Owens tripped him off the top. That allowed Del Rio to hit the double foot stomp. As soon as he did, Owens pulled Del Rio out of the ring, tossed him into the barricade, and pinned Cesaro for the win. Really good match that went about 14 minutes.

Becky Lynch (w/Natalya) beat Dana Brooke (w/Charlotte) via submission

Quickly into the match, Brooke slapped Natalya, but before Natalya could retaliate, Charlotte tackled her. The referee kicked them out. Lynch was distracted, so Brooke got a near fall with a school boy. Brooke tried her finisher, but Lynch rolled through and applied the Disarmer for the tapout win. Match was 3 minutes and was the only women’s segment on the show.

    Life Lessons with Darren Young

Bob Backlund wanted to see how Young would celebrate a win. Young thought maybe the millions of dollars dance, or a moonwalk. Backlund told him to be down to earth and save his money. Young agreed to save his money, and asked Backlund how he’s saved his money. Backlund deadpanned, “This is my only pair of clothes.” This segment was… slightly better than usual.

Baron Corbin beat Kalisto via pinfall

Corbin won in 3 minutes with the End of Days. Dolph Ziggler was on commentary and kept calling Corbin “kid” and also a millennial.

Throughout the show, they aired about 3 or 4 clips from the Ambrose-Jericho feud to hype tonight’s main event. Before the main event, the announcers again put over MITB as a huge show, calling the two main events WrestleMania caliber.

Backstage skit with Sheamus and friends

Sheamus was watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on TV (or a trailer anyway), as Zack Ryder, Goldust, R-Truth and Summer Rae stood there too for some reason. Sheamus informed them that he plays a giant rhinoceros, and Ryder joked it must’ve been hard for Sheamus to get into character. Sheamus had a funny comeback, saying Ryder dresses up in his bedroom like a Ninja Turtle, but he was actually in the movie.

Sheamus put himself over as a star, like the new Rock, when Apollo Crews joined and got in his face. Sheamus asked if he was starstruck, so Crews punched him in the face, putting Sheamus on his ass. Crews left, Truth made a joke, and they all laughed. Sheamus threw boxes at them and yelled.

Chris Jericho beat Dean Ambrose via pinfall

Jericho was pissed about the thumbtacks, so he slapped Ambrose. He then ran away from Ambrose who chased after, eventually hitting a clothesline and chops. As Jericho got some offense, he yelled some more, claiming it was 69 thumbtacks pulled out of him. Ambrose came back with a suicide dive and tried a Dirty Deeds on the announce table, but Jericho countered and catapulted him off.

Jericho had control after a break as the crowd chanted “Let’s go Ambrose.” Ambrose made a comeback but Jericho cut him off with a flying enziguri. Ambrose used a la magistral cradle for a near fall.

They countered each other’s finishers, when Jericho whipped Ambrose toward the turnbuckles. However, Ambrose had to stop himself from running into the referee, and when he turned around, Jericho hit the Codebreaker for the win. Huh.

The match was about 14 minutes. Jericho set up a ladder in the corner and tried to toss Ambrose into it, but Ambrose reversed and tossed Jericho into it instead. Ambrose then dropped the ladder onto Jericho’s back. Ambrose was about to leave but stopped as the crowd chanted “one more time.” Ambrose stood up the ladder, climbed it, and hit Jericho with an elbow drop. Ambrose stood tall.

    – Final Thoughts:

The first half of the show was pretty good, as the tag match with Owens/Del Rio vs. Cesaro/Zayn was actually before the top of the hour. The main event was good enough, but I hated the finish.

Ambrose and Jericho feuded for months, leading to Ambrose getting the big win in the finale. They’ve protected Ambrose since losing to Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania, and not only did Ambrose beat Jericho in their blow-off match, he won the first one too.

Having Jericho beat Ambrose randomly a few weeks later is pretty dumb, and a sign that they can’t handle a feud with 6 guys. They just keep fighting each other on every show and none of the results matter. They’re all still in the ladder match at MITB no matter what the result of any of these matches.

They could’ve had Ambrose beat Del Rio, and put Jericho in the tag match instead. Or, Ambrose could’ve just beaten Jericho again. I certainly don’t think Jericho should be “putting over” everyone, but there’s nothing wrong with the story that Chris Jericho simply cannot beat Dean Ambrose.

  • Daily Update: Lesnar & USADA, Nakamura to Japan, NXT Preview

For those curious as to how USADA and UFC will be handling Brock Lesnar and PED testing, we’ve got a lot more on the story here. Basically, since the USADA drug testing standards were not in place when Brock Lesnar announced his retirement from UFC in 2011, he will not have to fulfill the 4 months of pre fight testing. He is being treated like a newly contracted fighter, who just happens to have a fight in a month. So he has only been eligibile for testing since last Friday. However, since he has been under contract to WWE in the last 5 years, he has theoretically been tested and clean since his 2011 retirement.

Muhammad Ali’s funeral takes place in Louisville tomorrow. It was the will of Muhammad Ali to have a free funeral for all to attend, because he really was the people’s champ. The city of Louisville made 15,000 tickets available for free to people who registered, and those tickets were claimed within an hour. The sad part is that many of those tickets are now for sale on the secondary market for hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. Ali had been clear with his people that when the time came, he wanted everyone to have a chance to share in the memories and legacy that he left for all of us, for free, not for profit, because above all else, Ali stood for freedom.

Former UFC Lightweight champion Anthony Pettis has announced that he will moving down a weight class and hopes to make his featherweight debut in August. I guess Pettis didn’t think there was a big enough log jam at 145 and needed to wedge himself in there. Pettis is on a 3 fight losing streak at 155, with losses the champion Raphael Dos Anjos, Eddie Alvarez, and Edson Barboza.

Frankie Edgar is opening up the largest UFC Gym in New Jersey, located in North Brunswick. They are hosting a grand opening at the 25,000 square foot facility this Saturday from 9am-4pm with Edgar, Matt Hughes, Eddie Alvarez, Edson Barboza, Renzo Gracie, and Rafael Natal.

    • Daily Update: Kimbo Slice dead, Ospreay wins, Helwani back, Van Zant to WWE

The death of youtube fighting sensation Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson at age 42 has shocked the MMA world. Ferguson, who most recently KO’d Dada 5000 on a Bellator show a few months back, was scheduled to face James Thompson on July 16, in a rematch of their Elite XC fight from 2008. The cause of death for Ferguson was heart failure, although there is some question about that, as Slice had failed a drug test after his Dada 5000 match for elevated Testosterone and Nandrolone. More on this story can be read here.

Will Ospreay surprised no one by winning this year’s New Japan Super Juniors tournament. The 16 man tournament was really a star studded event, especially on the gaijin side which included Matt Sydal, Trent Baretta, Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly, David Finlay, Rocky Romero, and of course, Ricochet. Ospreay went on to defeat Ryusuke Taguchi in the finals to win the entire tournament. More on that here.

      TUESDAY NEWS UPDATE

Ariel Helwani and MMAFighting have been reinstated. After much to-do about the untimely departures of Helwani and his crew from this past weekend at UFC 199, it appears Dana and the Fertitas have changed their mind.

In whatever deal was made to get Brock Lesnar to UFC for 200, we now know what WWE wants in return: Paige Van Zant. They want her for SummerSlam, I guess to fight the Undertaker if Lesnar is KO’d by Hunt. Seems fair.

Also earlier today, Paul Heyman conducted an exclusive sit-down interview with Brock Lesnar to discuss his upcoming fight at UFC 200. You can find out more at HeymanHustle.com.

2K will be announcing this year’s WWE roster shortly. The game is not scheduled to be released until October 2016, but consumers who pre-order WWE 2K17 at any participating retailer will receive two playable characters of legendary WCW and WWE star Bill Goldberg, well as playable WCW Monday Nitro and Halloween Havoc arenas, at no extra cost on launch day. WWE.com posted an article on former German national soccer team goalkeeper Tim Wiese accepting a deal to start training at the Performance Center. It has also been posted to WWE’s German website and has gotten a good amount of media buzz in Germany today. Wiese, who bulked up big the past few years as he picked up bodybuilding is a charismatic and impressive looking guy at around 6’4″ and about 285 lbs. His contract with his former soccer club of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim is set to expire on 6/30, even though he was cut from the team long before that, in January of 2014. Wiese had publically talked about getting into wrestling, as the media had made comparisons of his physique to those of wrestlers. He appeared in person at a WWE house show in Frankfurt, Germany on November 15, 2014, taking part in a red carpet event before the show and later that night appearing in the ring to celebrate with the Usos after they won their match. He also had a one-day tryout at the Performance Center at some point last year. (Thanks to Marcus Gronemann)

      UFC and other MMA

      • This is an interesting read regarding the Ariel Helwani and MMAFighting.com banning, which was quickly overturned. Columnist Ed Graney accuses the UFC of bullying.
      • The UFC 199 prelims did 798,000 viewers on FS 1 Saturday night slightly up from last month and right in line with what regular shows have been doing this year. There is usually an uptick for shows where Conor McGregor or Ronda Rousey is fighting on the main card, especially in the case of Rousey.
      • Bellator 158, originally scheduled to be headlined by the late Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson, has lost its co-main event as well as Josh Koscheck pulled out of his scheduled fight with Paul Daley due to injury. Douglas Lima will step in to face Daley in a fight that won’t have a fraction of the interest, although it could be a better fight.
      • A top strawweight fight has been added to UFC 201, as Rose Namajunas will face Karolina Kowalkewicz. That fight would make sense as either the FS 1 or Fight Pass featured prelim, as the winner would be in line for a title shot.
      • Emil Meek, fresh off his KO win over Rousimar Palhares in Italy last month, has signed with UFC and will debut on the show in Hamburg on September 3rd. He’ll face another debuting fighter, Jessin Ayari. Ayari is coming off a win over former UFC fighter Mickael Lebou in April.

    • May 3, 1999 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Death of Rick Rude, WWF Backlash review, more

The death of Rick Rude on 4/20 becomes the latest addition to a strange and macabre body count that is very close to becoming synonymous with the pro wrestling industry.

Rude passed away that evening of a heart attack after being rushed to the North Fulton Medical Center near his home in Alpharetta, GA, an Atlanta suburb, at the age of 40. Rude, who was working with WCW as an announcer for the Backstage Blast PPV airings of Nitro on DirecTV once per month after being removed from his role as childhood friend Curt Hennig’s on-camera manager, had been training for an in-ring comeback after his career presumably had ended after suffering a broken back in a May 1, 1994 match against Sting at the Fukuoka Dome.

    • WWE interested in UFC’s Paige VanZant for SummerSlam

As part of the business relationship with UFC and WWE, the WWE is interested in bringing in Paige VanZant to SummerSlam.

PW Insider and Fox Sports have both reported the news.

Mike Roberts, the manager of VanZant, confirmed to Fox Sports earlier today that WWE has reached out to inquire about VanZant to appear “in some capacity” on the 8/21 SummerSlam show.  A WWE source confirmed the news to us that the company was looking for a role for her at the show.

VanZant gained a good deal of national exposure on “Dancing With The Stars,” where she placed second, after winning the actual dancing end of the competition.  She came off strong throughout the show, which was viewed by 11 to 12 million viewers every Monday night.

VanZant was originally slated to fight on the undercard of UFC 200, but the decision was made to hold her off because of the limited amount of training time she’d have after DWTS ended.

VanZant already got a movie role in the “Kickboxer Retaliation” movie with former WWE star Dave Bautista as well as a number of former MMA fighters including Gina Carano and Georges St-Pierre.
