  • UFC Fight Night 81 DFS Playbook: value picks, who to avoid

The Octagon makes its’ way back to Boston, Massachusetts for UFC Fight Night 81 on Sunday night, airing on FOX Sports 1. It is the second event of the month of January, and another opportunity for daily fantasy players to score some profit. Below are our studs, value plays, fighters to avoid and our advice for you in setting your line-ups.

    STUDS

    Charles Rosa ($10,800)

Charles Rosa might just be 1-2 in the UFC, but he has been impressive in all three bouts. His debut was a close loss to Dennis Siver in a short-notice bout. He came back to submit Sean Soriano before dropping a close split decision to Yair Rodriguez in June. Having been born in Massachusetts, Rosa is back fighting in front of a home crowd and looking to score an impressive win. He will fight Kyle Bochniak, who takes the fight on three days’ notice. That is a lot to ask of someone, much less a fighter who just fought last week. This is set up for Rosa to get a win, and props to Bochniak for stepping to keep Rosa on the card, but Rosa should be getting a finish here, and is our top play because of the circumstances surrounding the fight.

    Rob Font ($10,600)

Rob Font is another local fighter on the card, having been born, living and training in Boston. He is a good prospect at 135 pounds with an 11-1 record and ten straight wins. He has been out of action for a long time, not having fought since scoring a first-round knockout of George Roop in his UFC debut in July 2014. That performance, though, showed what he is certainly capable of delivering inside the Octagon. He has well-rounded skills, and he fights an opponent making his UFC debut as an injury replacement in Joey Gomez. Gomez is 6-0 in his career but has yet to have the exposure of the big stage. Font’s striking should be enough to score a finish, and he is a good bet to score a lot of points on Sunday.

    VALUE PLAYS

    Matt Mitrione ($9,200)

Matt Mitrione looks to have something to prove as he heads into the last fight of his contract on Sunday night. That makes him a good contrarian pick for the event. He is fighting Travis Browne, who comes in as the favorite, but there are a lot of question marks surrounding Browne, especially how he comes back from his last loss and whether the distractions of dating Ronda Rousey get to him. Mitrione is good on his feet and quicker than Browne, but he does make mistakes that cost him fights. It is heavyweights and a finish is likely. Mitrione at his price makes him an interesting value.

    Sean O’Connell ($8,500)

Sean O’Connell is a sneaky play at his $8,500 salary. He has won two straight fights by knockout, including a 56-second win in his last fight. He lost his first two UFC fights, but one was a short-notice bout and the other was a split decision. He scores a good amount of points in his fights, and 205-pound fighters have a lot of power. He faces a tough opponent in Ilir Latifi, who has won all three of his UFC fights by finish in the first round. He was also finished recently in the first round. If you are looking for a fighter with a low salary so you can play contrarian and spend up, O’Connell is of solid value.

    AVOID

    Francimar Barroso ($10,000)

Francimar Barroso is 2-1 in the UFC, but all three fights have gone the distance and he hasn’t been overly impressive. He is a grinder who doesn’t land a lot of strikes and leaves himself open for counters. He is fighting a short-notice opponent in Elvis Mutapcic, and Mutapcic is taking the fight in a higher weight class. Mutapcic is talented, though, and he has a very good chance of defeating Barroso. He also has a style that can beat Barroso. Short notice or not, I give Mutapcic a good chance of winning, therefore I am fading from Barroso.

    Daron Cruickshank ($8,700)

Daron Cruickshank is an exciting lightweight fighter, but he has hit a real rough patch in recent UFC bouts. Eye pokes, rough weight cuts and tough competition has seen him win just once in his last five fights, and his back is against the wall. Also with his back against the wall is his opponent, Paul Felder. Felder is more talented of the two, and there will be a lot of strikes thrown. Felder has the better shot at finishing Cruickshank, and a distance fight favors Felder as well. I will be shying away from Cruickshank on my roster.

    OUR LINEUPS:

RYAN FREDERICK: Charles Rosa ($10,800), Rob Font ($10,600), Travis Browne ($10,200), Dominick Cruz ($9,300), Francisco Trinaldo ($9,100)

I have Charles Rosa and Rob Font as my two big plays for this card. Both are local fighters who will be willed to win in front of the home fans, and both are fighting short-notice opponents. I like both winning by finish and getting maximum points. I have Travis Browne despite thinking Matt Mitrione is good value. Someone is getting finished in that bout, and Browne is too naturally talented to look as bad as he did against Andrei Arlovski. Dominick Cruz is my interesting play. I am picking T.J. Dillashaw to win, but I’m not confident on that. It is five rounds, which means ten more minutes to score points, and I think they are going the distance. Cruz is good value for his salary. My last pick is Francisco Trinaldo. He has won four straight, has good value, and fights a beatable Ross Pearson. He is a good contrarian pick.

PAUL FONTAINE: Ilir Latifi ($10,900), Rob Font ($10,600), Travis Browne ($10,200), Francisco Trinaldo ($9,100), Daron Cruickshank ($8,700)

Gotta be honest….I’m not really thrilled with my team this week. I went through and picked the probable winners and finishers and I just couldn’t work them all in under the cap so I had to make some tough choice. Browne is clearly a class above Matt Mitrione and as long as the out of the cage stuff he’s been dealing with aren’t too much of a distraction, he should finish Mitrione fairly quickly. Trinaldo is an often overlooked fighter who is a submission specialist and has won 4 in a row. Pearson is tough but he’s taken a lot of punishment and is due to start showing the effects of his age and the damage over the year. Cruickshank is the one I’m not terribly thrilled with having on my team but he’s got power and could score a KO at any point, although his opponent Paul Felder has never been finished. Latifi has first round finishes in each of his last 3 fights and I think he overpowers Sean O’Connell en route to another quick win. Font-Gomez could be a sleeper fight as both are finishers that usually get the job done quickly. Gomez is making his Octagon debut and could have some jitters so I look for that to be the difference here and Font should wipe that “0” from Gomez’ record.

PEACH MACHINE: Anthony Pettis ($11,000), Paul Felder ($10,700), Ben Saunders ($9,800), Dominick Cruz ($9,300), Ed Herman ($8,900)

I think Cruz is too smart and too good to get beat by Dillashaw. All Dominick Cruz does is alternate between getting better and breaking his knee, and his knee is healthy. I like Pettis to rebound and smash Alvarez. I like Alvarez, but I think Pettis is too fast. I’m taking Herman because Boetsch is coming off a bad KO. So is Herman, but I think Boetsch is closer to being done than making a run. Saunders has a lot of reach here. Cote’s fighting age is much greater than 35. I like Saunders to get this to the ground and get the submission. Felder is a killer and has a tough out in Cruickshank, but Felder is tougher and younger and is looking to get back into that win column. I like my picks again this week. I went 4-1 in my DK picks last week, and 11-1 in my tapology picks. Good enough for number 2 over all in tapology. Am I bragging? Yes. Will I ever get another chance to brag at this level? Unlikely. Holtzman blew my perfect pick night. It’s my fault for believing in someone.

  • Fox Sports suspends Kenny Florian for plagiarism

Fox Sports today announced that announcer Kenny Florian, 39, a former star UFC fighter, was being suspended after a controversy from an article he posted  earlier in the week on the Fox Sports web site.

The article was a breakdown of tomorrow night’s fight between bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw and former champion Dominick Cruz in Boston. Significant parts of the story were apparently almost identical to a piece Lee Wylie had done about the career of famous boxer Willie Pep from December.

Later, the Fox Sports web site added an Editor’s Note, saying, “Language in this breakdown borrows from written material in a video of an in-depth look at the defensive boxing prowess of Willie Pep by TheFightCity.com boxing analyst Lee Wylie. The original version of the story did not contain this credit. We regret the oversight.”

Florian and Wylie have spoken and Wylie seemed fine with Florian, writing, “Show me someone who hasn’t made a mistake and I’ll show you a liar. It’s not the end of the world.”

Fox this morning announced, “It is vitally important that Fox Sports and FoxSports.com maintain credibility and trust with their readers, viewers and fans. UFC on-air personality Kenny Florian is being suspended beginning immediately for a critical oversight in a story posted earlier this week on FoxSports.com.  Florian has admitted and regrets his mistake and apolgoized for the error.”

  • New Japan on AXS Report: New Japan Cup matches, Fale vs. Okada

We return to New Japan on AXS coverage tonight as we start off with opening matches from the New Japan Cup. These matches took place March 5, 2015 at Korakuen Hall.

First match up is Doc Gallows taking on Kota Ibushi in the first round of the New Japan cup. Ibushi looked really good here against Gallows. There’s an old saying that absence makes the heart grow fonder, and such as the case here as Ibushi is such a dynamic performer. Might be part of the reason why he’s out indefinitely with herniated discs, but that’s the cost of working this kind of style. He gets the surprise ring with a rana pin.

Tetsuya Natio and Karl Anderson are up next. Also a good match, and a lot of it aired here. I’ve said it before here, but man did Naito do a total 180 in character, as we’ll be seeing in future episodes. Anderson did a sick powerbomb off the top rope for a nearfall. After a flurry of offense, Naito lays out Anderson and pins him with the stardust press for the win. Very good match towards the end.

Naito says he doesn’t care who he faces next, bring it on. In an interesting line, he mentions that he knows some people find him annoying he wants to be the best and will let people know it.

Bad Luck Fale and Kazuchika Okada follows next. The story of this match mostly centers around Okada. Since losing at WrestleKingdom Okada’s been in a bit of a funk, and now has found a new rival in Fale who looks to keep him in that funk for a good while. At this stage of the game it’s obvious Fale needs to be carried to have a really good match, and no one can really have a bad match with Okada (unless you’re 65+) so this was a perfectly alright match. The visual of someone smaller than Okada giving Fale a reverse neckbreaker sure was something. Fale hit the grenade but Okada kicked out. Fale then went to the top rope and squished him with a frog splash but still kicked out. But Fale comes back with the Bad Luck Fall, and that’s where Okada loses.

Yano said his New Japan Cup match against Tanahashi was a while ago, but remembers he ran a marathon before, with him recalling it was though. He said he and Tanahashi were complete opposites. For example,  he never lies but Tanahashi does all the time. He’s dull and old fashioned while he’s off selling DVDs. Yano doesn’t really care about titles (then why is he competing in New Japan?) but Tanahashi might be the type who cares about a belt. In a way, he’s cursed due to that.

The match wasn’t much, and lasted under two minutes. In a surprise flash win, Yano pulled Tanahashi’s hair and cradled him. People thought the finish was funny. Hey,

Yano said it’s time for a new ace and Tomorrow marks the beginning of a new era, and New Japan Pro Wrestling would be reborn. Tanahashi wasn’t happy and said he’d have his revenge.

Back to the reflective interview. Yano said he’s always wanted to beat Tanahashi. He then plugged his album and his DVD and told everyone to buy a thousand each. If you buy a million of both, it’s only five million for everything!

Good show. The first two matches were pretty good, and the final was what it was.

  • UFC’s Diego Brandao tests positive for marijuana

Diego Brandao, who lost to Brian Ortega via third round submission in a fight he was dominating up to that point at UFC 195 on 1/2 in Las Vegas, tested over the limits for marijuana in a USADA test taken the day of the show.

The UFC announced today that they were informed by USADA of a potential violation for marijuana by Brandao.

The test was over the WADA limit of 180 ng/ml for THC.  The Nevada limit is 150 ng/ml.

This would be Brandao’s first drug test failure.

Brandao won season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter in 2011, but has had an up and down career in the UFC, posting a 6-4 record, with two of his losses coming at the hands of Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor.

    FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

On the MSL & Kevin Sullivan show on MLW Radio it was reported that Jim Ross is the new host of New Japan World Pro Wrestling Returns.  At this time there is no finalized deal.  The sides have talked for some time and it seems an obvious move for both if they can reach terms.  Mauro Ranallo will be hosting the shows through late February.  So, the new announce team, almost certainly including Josh Barnett, would start at that point.

Today’s New York Post reported on Comcast systems pulling Spike, CMT and Pop to higher priced digital tiers.  Although Pop will lose some clearances, they are gaining a substantial amount with other new deals in play.  As you can imagine, Viacom, which owns Spike and CMT, is not happy about this.

The New York Post also reported that UFC owners Lorenzo & Frank Fertitta are selling their Fertitta Entertainment management company to Red Rock Resorts (a Fertitta family owned chain of casinos) for $460 million.  Red Rock Resorts is expected to do an IPO.  Frank Fertitta runs both Fertitta Entertainment management and Red Rock Resorts.   Both brothers will get $113 million individually while another $159 million from the sale will go to their kids.

Jimmy Snuka’s murder trial has been postponed pending a decision on Snuka’s competency to stand trial.

WWE Hall of Fame tickets sold out immediately today, right after they went on sale to the public.  There are likely to be tickets available later after production is set up.

ON THIS DAY IN WORLD PRO WRESTLING HISTORY: Daily pro wrestling history (01/14): Christian Cage wins TNA/NWA World Title

  • Wanderlei Silva released from his UFC contract

Former Pride Grand Prix  Champion and 12 fight UFC vet Wanderlei Silva was released today from his UFC contract. Silva last fought in March 2013, knocking out Brian Stann in the 2nd round of a Fuel TV show from Japan. He was then scheduled to fight Chael Sonnen in a fight stemming off the two of them coaching on TUF Brazil. The fight was put off several times due to injuries and then drug testing issues with both fighters.

First reported by MMAjunkie’s Steven Marrocco .

In Silva’s case, he was approached at his gym by drug testers and famously ran out the back door to avoid the test. He was eventually given a lifetime ban by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. That ban has since been rescinded and both sides are currently in negotiations for a more appropriate punishment. In the meantime Silva has still been at odds with the organization he’s under contract to, including accusing the UFC of fixing fights.

This morning, word actually came out that Silva was taking back those claims, saying that he’d been misunderstood. A few hours later, word came out that Silva had been released.

For several years in the early 2000’s, “The Axe Murderer” was one of the most feared fighters in any weight class. After losing to Tito Ortiz at UFC 25 in April 2000, Silva had a stretch of 18 fights in a row where he didn’t suffer a loss before losing a split decision to the much larger Mark Hunt on the 2004 Pride year-end show. 14 of those fights ended with Silva KO’ing his opponent, most in the first round.

Silva returned to UFC in December 2007 after Zuffa bought Pride and absorbed the fighter contracts. He went 4-5 after his return with 3 knockouts. All but one of those fights was in the Main Event or co-Main event position. He leaves the UFC with an overall record of 35-12-1 and would almost certainly be highly sought after by either Rizin Fighting or Bellator MMA.

  • Steve Austin confirms WrestleMania appearance

Steve Austin, WWE’s biggest peak drawing card in its history, has indicated that he will probably make an appearance at WrestleMania this year.

Austin, as a guest on Jim Ross’ 100th podcast this week, categorized it as 99 percent that he would be appearing on the show on 4/3 at AT&T Stadium. He will not be wrestling on the show. He said that he had an idea that he’s interested in but said he’s yet to talk to creative.

He indicated even if they don’t agree to do his idea, he would be at the show appearing in some form.

Austin appeared at the 2014 WrestleMania in a segment with Hulk Hogan and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Last year in Santa Clara, Austin didn’t appear.
