Sunday has WWE in Bakersfield,, CA (Chris Jericho, Bray Wyatt, Wyatt Family, Dudleys, Ryback, A.J. Styles, Kane, Natalya).

Raw will be Monday in Anaheim.  No Brock Lesnar or Paul Heyman on to the go-home show for Fast Lane.   Ticket sales picked up with the announcement of A.J. Styles, although I’m sure in management that will be passed off as pure coincidence, and maybe it is.  But this looks to be the first sellout of a Raw show this year.  It’s very close at this point and Anaheim is good walk-up market.

Lesnar will make his first appearance on Smackdown since 2004 at the Tuesday tapings in Ontario, CA.

The newest issue of the Wrestling Observer is one of the best of the year.  A very detailed look at the end of Bryan Danielson’s career and retirement. Looking back at sports, pro wrestling and the ramifications that are and are not being talked about.  Danielson’s retirement is a big story, both his short and long term impact on pro wrestling.  How his story will act as a catalyst for change not only within pro wrestling but all contact sports.  If you are a wrestling fan, a sports fan or a science fan, this may be the most important issue of the year.

Bryan Danielson’s retirement speech, career highlights, home town, character both in and out of the ring, booking, the crazy way he ended up as champion for the first time, the birth of the “Yes” chant, the build to WrestleMania 30 & 31, the various exams, why he wanted to continue wrestling and WWE didn’t, his goals outside of WWE and why he changed his mind in the last few weeks.

The quandary he was in about continuing his career, how his career began, the formation of ROH and the changing landscape of independent wrestling, the changing ideas of what a pro wrestling headliner can look like, the first time I ever saw him wrestle while sitting with Red Bastien and Nick Bockwinkel

    FRIDAY’S NEWS UPDATE

MMA and WWE trending over the past week as far as Internet searches on Google go, Kevin Randleman was No. 7 yesterday with 100,000.  Titus O’Neil was No. 17 on Tuesday with 50,000.  Daniel Bryan was No. 6 on Monday with 200,000.

Lucha Underground set its record audience on Wednesday night, doing 136,000 viewers at 8 p.m. and the immediate 9 p.m. replay did 81,000 viewers.

A wild PPV show was announced on 3/20 from the Celebrity Theater in Phoenix. On the same stage, Roy Jones Jr. will fight a fan and if the fan can beat him, he gets $100,000.  Ken Shamrock will face Dan Severn for the first time in 19 years to end their long standing rivalry in an MMA match.  Kurt Angle will face Rey Mysterio Jr. in a pro wrestling match, and Chael Sonnen will face Michael Bisping in a grappling match. We’ll have a lot more on this as it approaches, but this is legit.

The World MMA Awards from last Friday will air tonight at 10 p.m. on FS 2.

    WWE

    • Here’s a story on Daniel Bryan and C.M. Punk.
    • The special we wrote about yesterday, a look back at the first WrestleMania in 1985, airs tonight at 10:30 p.m. on the MSG Network.
    • The Edge & Christian Show That Totally Reeks of Awesomeness debuts after Fast Lane on 2/21 on the WWE Network

    • John Cena will be the honorary pace car driver for the Daytona Beach 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event on 2/21 at 1 p.m., the same day as Fast Lane.
    • Stock continued to decline, closing at $14.65 per share, the lowest in a long time.  Besides the decline in the market as a whole, this stems from yesterday’s report where the company lost money for the quarter and there was a slight decline in network subscriptions.
    • We don’t have an update on Riddick Moss, who was motionless after taking a fall during the NXT show in Jacksonville and they had to stop the main event (Dash & Dawson & Moss vs. Sami Zayn & Colin Cassady & Enzo Amore) last night after a triple suplex spot.  He was able to get up and did walk from the ring to the back on his own but he was motionless for a long time. • Kevin Kiley Sr., who is the father of Alex Riley, has been in the news this week because he quit his job as a sports talk show host at WKRK-FM in Cleveland. Kiley said that his principles and the principles of the station didn’t match up.  He’d been under controversy when he said the Buffalo Bills hiring a woman as an assistant coach was “absurd.”  In the past Kiley Sr. had gotten heat by saying women shouldn’t be on the voting board for the Pro Football Hall of Fame or allowed to officiate the game. This had led to reporter Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk saying that people should boycott the station.  Kiley said that in 35 years of reporting on sports, this was the first time when the station told him he could not defend himself against critics, so he quit.  “You shouldn’t accept censorship ever.  You should make sure the people on the radio are telling you the truth as they see it.  Don’t let some clown in New York tell them what to say and then you think it’s your opinion or what not to say.  That’s what happened here and I’m not accepting it.”

  • Daily Update: Punk’s UFC debut delayed, Daniel Bryan on ESPN

    CM PUNK’S DEBUT DELAYED

    By Dan Velten

CM Punk’s UFC debut has been delayed again. After signing with UFC in December of 2014, it looked as if Punk would be debuting in June of 2016. But that’s not going to happen as Phil Brooks underwent back surgery today to repair a herniated disc. The injury occurred during his career as a professional wrestler, and had been nagging him recently to the point that it was greatly hindering his training. The disc repair suregery will put him on the shelf for at least four to six weeks, and his debut date is uncertain at this point.

A side note in this whole thing: Punk’s opponent was determined only four days ago. Debuting UFC fighter Mickey Gall was given the chance to win one match against Michael Jackson (making his pro AND MMA debut) to earn the shot at Punk. Gall easily handled Jackson this past weekend, submitting him in 45 seconds. After the match, Punk and Gall had a polite meeting in the cage and neither man said much. Perhaps since Punk knew the surgery was looming, he did not want to make too much of the match just yet. Gall will still be the guy at this point, but if Punk’s return / debut is postponed much longer, one would think perhaps Gall would want to fight again. We have more information here

    WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE:

Besides CM Punk’s fight being delayed, the big news of the day is Daniel Bryan’s appearance on SportsCenter last night. Bryan revealed specifically that he had been hiding “post-concussion seizures” (it seemed like the implication was he was still having them) and his most recent tests revealed a ‘small sub-acute or chronic lesion’ in the temporoparietal junction of his brain. That can cause seizures, and that’s why he was able to be relatively at peace with retirement. We wish Bryan Danielson and his family the best in whatever comes next for this incredibly talented young man.

Titus O’Neil is getting a lot of fan support stemming from his suspension. If he gets fired, maybe they can sign Tatum O’Neal.

13 years ago today, Curt Hennig was found dead in a Florida hotel room at the age of 44 years young. Curtis Axel has been pretty active on Twitter today with RTs and such from people helping him get through which is still very tough on him.

  • UFC Fight Night 82 Hendricks vs Thompson: Wrestling Observer Panel Picks

If I’ve learned one thing in the world of UFC in 2016, it’s that UFC thinks that the value of a Fabricio Werdum fight is about $60. I say this because tonight’s card was originally scheduled for PPV and when the Werdum heavyweight title defence was pulled from the card, it became a free television show. As a PPV, this show would’ve been a tough sell but as a free card, it’s pretty damned good.

Former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks returns to the Octagon on his road back to the title, a rising heavyweight takes on a fan favorite but fading contender in Roy Nelson, two former Strikeforce fighters square off with title contention or irrelevancy on line, and two top 10 flyweights will meet in what is perhaps the most relevant fight on the show in terms of an immediate title contender. In the last of our panel picks, two former welterweights move down a weight class in an effort to jumpstart their careers. All of this AND Mickey Gall facing the King of Pop to get a chance to face former WWE Champion CM Punk in the summer!

Here’s our panel with the 2016 records in parenthesis. We’ve also added a running tally of the records of the favorites going into the fights and the panel consensus picks:

    • John Pollock (11-4; .733) – Fight Network analyst, Live Audio Wrestling co-host, MMA Report co-host
    • Mike Sawyer (10-5; .667) – Tough Talk MMA
    • Josh Nason (10-5; .667) – Host of Josh Nason’s Punch Out; writer/editor WrestlingObserver.com , WON Twitter guy
    • Steve Juon (9-6; .600) – MMA Mania/Wrestling Observer writer. Angry Marks founder
    • Mike Sempervive (9-6; .600) – Wrestling Observer Live and Big Audio Nightmare co-host
    • Ryan Frederick (9-6; .600) – WrestlingObserver.com UFC reporter, WON Twitter guy
    • Consensus picks (8-6; .571)
    • Favorites (8-7; .533)
    • Dave Meltzer (8-7; .533)– Wrestling Observer founder
    • Front Row Brian (7-8; .467) – MMA newsbreaker, beloved internet personality, Podcast host
    • Paul Fontaine (7-8; .467) – MMADraws.com founder, WrestlingObserver.com writer
    • David Bixenspan (7-8; .467) – Figure Four Weekly writer, podcast host

Johny Hendricks (17-3) vs Steven Thompson (11-1)
    Welterweights

Remember Johny Hendricks? The guy who’s struggled the last couple of years with his weight? The guy who took GSP to the limit in his final fight, with many believing he actually won the fight? The guy who had a 2 fight, 10 round series with Robbie Lawler that was as even as it could possibly be, coming out of the end of it without his title? Ya, that guy. He’s back and taking on a Karate fighter with a lot of hype and an impressive record and he’s out to prove that he should get the next shot at the 170 lb title. Thompson can knock out anyone with his kicks out of nowhere and this should be a great main event. It’s the first time Hendricks has fought on free TV in almost four years in an interesting note. Our panel does not think there’s much of a doubt in this one.

Hendricks (sizable favorite): Sempervive, Nason, Sawyer, Pollock, Front Row Brian, Frederick, Juon, Fontaine, Bix, Meltzer

Roy Nelson (20-12) vs Jared Rosholt (14-2)
    Heavyweights

For the 2nd straight week, we have Heavyweights squaring off in the co-main event. Nelson was the TUF 10 champion, which seems like eons ago. In more recent times, he’s lost 6 of his last 7 fights but he’s also fought guys ranked ahead of him for the most part. Rosholt has the exact opposite UFC record, going 6-1 against mostly guys at or below his level although he did score a win over big Stefan Struve in his last fight. But he’s done so in non-typical Heavyweight fashion, grinding out decision wins in all but one of those fights. With a win over Nelson, he’ll likely move into the top 10 and start facing guys at the top of the division.

Nelson (moderate favorite): Sempervive, Sawyer, Pollock, Frederick, Meltzer
Rosholt: Nason, Front Row Brian, Juon, Fontaine, Bix

Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante (12-6) vs Ovince St Preux (18-7)
    Light Heavyweights

Feijao has struggled since coming over from Strikeforce when UFC absorbed the company in 2013. He’s got just one win in 4 UFC fights and this won’t get any easier for him tonight. OSP has fought twice as many times in the same time frame and has a 6-2 record, which propelled him into the top 10. His last 5 wins have all been by finish, with 4 of them coming in the first round. It’s unlikely that either of these guys will ever contend for a title but there should be some great action here. Once  again, there’s no doubt amongst our panel that OSP will emerge victorious.

OSP (big favorite): Sempervive, Nason, Sawyer, Pollock, Front Row Brian, Frederick, Juon, Fontaine, Bix, Meltzer

Joseph Benavidez (23-4) vs Zach Makovsky (19-6)
    Flyweights

If flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson didn’t exist, Benavidez would be unbeaten in the UFC and in fact going back to a split decision loss to current Bantamweight Champion Dominick Cruz in WEC in 2010. Sandwiched around his 11 wins in that time are two losses to Johnson. It’s tough to justify giving him a third shot at the belt but Benavidez is doing what he can to make that happen. His opponent, Makosvsky, should be someone he can handle as he comes in with losses in 2 of his last 3 fights. Benavidez really has almost nothing to gain here with a win but everything to lose.

Benavidez (huge favorite): Sempervive, Nason, Sawyer, Pollock, Front Row Brian, Frederick, Juon, Bix, Meltzer
    Makovsky: Fontaine

Josh Burkman (27-12) vs KJ Noons (13-8)
    Lightweights

Burkman has had some fun fights since returning to UFC but unfortunately for him, he’s failed to score a victory and has been finished his last two times out. This has led him to make the drop to 155 lbs for the first time in his career as he hopes to get back on the winning track. In fact, his last UFC win was in 2007 and since that time, he’s lost 6 times in the Octagon (with one later being changed to a no-contest). Noons has fought 2 of his last 3 fights at Welterweight but returns to his more familiar weight class here. The former Elite XC Lightweight Champion is one of only two fighters to have KO’d Nick Diaz and has the power to stop anyone in the division.

Burkman (moderate favorite) – Sempervive, Nason, Sawyer, Pollock, Front Row Brian, Frederick, Juon, Bix, Meltzer
    Noons: Fontaine

Two unanimous picks and two near-unanimous picks here and we’re split right down the middle in the co-main event.

    TUESDAY NEWS UPDATE

More on the front page, but the Raw audience was a new non-football season record low.

As noted on the front page, Benson Henderson’s Bellator debut will be a welterweight title shot on April 22nd.

Some interesting movement on the betting lines for UFC 196 in the two title fights. Conor McGregor opened as an underdog in his Lightweight title challenge of Rafael Dos Anjos but is now a slight favorite, due to most of the money coming in on the Featherweight champion. While Miesha Tate is still an underdog against Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm, the line has moved a lot in the last week, with most of the money coming in on Tate.

Embattled Edmond Tarverdyan, he was fined $5000 and suspended for 3 months due to failing to disclose his criminal past.  Edmond was popped in 2010 for felony identity theft and a resisting arrest charge, which is a misdemeanor.  He ended up pleading no contest to reduced misdemeanor charges but since he didn’t disclose this information to the CSAC he can’t corner anyone for 90 days.  He is having a rough year…

    WWE/Pro Wrestling

    UFC/MMA

    • TMZ Sports interviewed a fake Edmond Tarverdyan (Ronda Rousey’s coach) and hilarity ensued. Technically, the Edmond Twitter account is in violation of Twitter’s rules for not being clearly marked as a parody, but obviously nobody’s reported him, he’s not verified either, and the account being a parody is fairly obvious.
    • Past TUF cast member Jamie Yager (remember him?) returns to action for the first time in three years on a WSOF undercard fight on 2/20 against Greg Parker.
    • After the initial overnight number for Saturday’s UFC on FOX show came in at 2.43 million viewers, final numbers released today bumped that up to 2.685 million viewers, as we had speculated it would. The FS 1 prelims did 702,000 viewers. The main card number was down about 14% from last January’s FOX show. The prelims were up about 16% in total viewers as has been the case for most shows of late.
    • In other MMA ratings news, Bellator 148 Friday on Spike TV did a disappointing 566,000 viewers for the show headlined by Paul Daley knocking out Andy Uhrich. This show was greatly hurt by the withdrawal of former UFC star Josh Koscheck from the originally scheduled main event and the number was way down from their 2015 average.
    • Bellator 149 on February 19th has a late change to the main card as Mike Bronzoulis had to pull out of his fight with Melvin Guillard. Bellator veteran Derek Campos steps in to face the UFC vet who is coming off losses in 3 of his last 4 fights. In a weird bit of trivia, those three losses came in UFC, WSOF and Bellator.

  • Daily Update: Lucha Underground returns, rumored UFC fight

    Lucha Underground returns tonight

The Wednesday Night Wars are back with NXT vs. the returning Lucha Underground in the latter’s second season. Jeremy Peeples will have your look at episode one later tonight. Even The Rock has given the show its blessing as you’ll see in this AV Club preview piece.

UFC 196 PPV now FREE on Fox Sports 1

Due to injuries to both men in the main event, UFC will no longer be running a PPV on February 6. Originally slated to be headlined by a heavyweight title defense by Fabricio Werdum in a rematch against Cain Velasquez, the main event fight was recently changed when Velasquez decided to pull out due to an undisclosed injury. Rather than cancel the fight, the UFC offered the title shot to Stipe Miocic who recently KO’d Andrei Arlovski in 54 seconds less than a month ago on January 2, at UFC 195.

However, the Werdum vs. Miocic fight has now been completely cancelled as Werdum pulled out as well due to a number of minor injuries. This left the UFC in need of a new major match in order to put on the PPV event. With less than two weeks until the show, rather than find a replacement match, UFC 196 will now be a free show on Fox Sports 1, and the semi main event match between Johny Hendricks and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson will now headline the show.

The rest of the card that will air live for free on Fox Sports 1 on February 6 is as follows:

    • Roy Nelson vs. Jared Rosholt
    • Ovince St. Preux vs. Raphael Cavalcante
    • Joseph Benavidez vs. Zach Makovsky
    • Josh Burkman vs. KJ Noons

The show, which looks to be rather weak on paper, is now headlined by a potential number one contenders match at welterweight. Johny Hendricks looks to rebound from his most recent loss to fatness when he missed weight badly in his scheduled bout with Tyrone Woodley. White initially said Woodley would be getting the next shot at the welterweight title, but has since rescinded, given the likely rematch between Carlos Condit and current welterweight champion Robbie Lawler.

Given the weakness of the card without the title match, it is likely this would have been one of least purchased UFC PPV shows in recent history.

    WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan Alvarez appeared on PodcastOne.com’s “The Ross Report” with Jim Ross.  Listen here. As I type this Bryan is recording the Lance Storm F4D and the Tom Lawler’s Filthy Four Daily edition of F4D.  Look for those two shows within an hour or two.  Not sure which order they were recorded though!  I am also very sure Dave is feverishly working on completing the Wrestling Observer Newsletter at this moment as well, so check back for this week’s edition later today!  A big Wednesday as usual for F4WOnline.com, now on to the news:

    WWE/Pro Wrestling

    UFC/MMA

    • Rashad Evans vs Shogun Rua is rumoured to be announced for UFC on FOX 19 in April. Should the fight happen, it would be the first time the two veterans have fought each other, although they were scheduled to fight in 2011 at UFC 128 before a knee injury to Evans forced him out of that fight. This would probably be the co-main for that show, which only has a Tony Ferguson/Khabib Nurmagomedov fight attached to it.
    • UFC today announced the signing of a guy named Adam “The Prototype” Millstead to a four fight deal. You may recall that’s the same nickname John Cena had in developmental and a look at this guy might explain why he uses that name. Millstead is 7-1 with 7 straight stoppage wins on smaller regional shows.
    • EA Sports released a trailer for the UFC Ultimate Team mode in the upcoming EA Sports UFC 2 video game. They also updated their website with a news post going over the various features in UFC Ultimate Team. The game comes out on March 15th and is available for pre-order now.
    • WSOF 27 Saturday on NBC Sports Network did 213,000 viewers for its show headlined by Luiz Firmino vs Caros Fodor and no starpower whatsoever underneath. It was their best number since August’s show headlined by Jake Shield and well above the 2015 average of 189,000 viewers.
    • ONE Championships has a show for the 2nd straight weekend coming up on Friday morning North American time, evening in Malaysia where the show is being held. The main event is Featherweight fight between Eric Kelly and Ev Ting. Interesting name on the undercard is Christian Lee, the 17 year old brother of Angela Lee, the 4-0 Strawweight who took the promotion by storm in 2015. Christian had his first pro fight in December for ONE and won with a KO in just 29 seconds.
    • Carlos Condit reveals his new driver’s license photo…taken three days after the Robbie Lawler fight.
    • We have a column up, taking a retrospective look at TUF season 1.
    • Bellator MMA runs its first show of the year Friday night in Fresno, airing as always on Spike TV. This is a “regular” show, being headlined by a welterweight fight between Paul Daley and Andy Uhrich. If Daley wins, as expected, he’d be expected to face Josh Koscheck later in the year. Other fights on the show include Chris Honeycutt v Paul Bradley, Raphael Butler v Tony Johnson Jr and Patricky “Pitbull” Freire vs Ryan Couture. We’ll have coverage of the show on the site starting at 9 pm eastern.

    The Rock returns to RAW

As pretty much expected, The Rock was the surprise return at WWE RAW last night.  He was what you would have expected from him, he was The Rock.  His appearance along with it being the day after the Royal Rumble led to a surge in ratings for RAW.  They will, of course, look to hold onto the higher ratings leading to Fastlane and more importantly Wrestlemania in Dallas.   Check out F4WOnline.com’s recap of last night’s RAW.

Smackdown and Main Event will be taped tonight in Tampa.
