  • Daily Update: Fedor, WWE Cruiserweight Classic, Raw ratings

Fedor Emelianenko was on the MMA Hour today promoting his Friday night fight on Fight Pass against Fabio Maldonado from Russia. Emelianenko said he was back in talks with UFC and they are looking at a proposed deal. He said right now it is limbo. He said it hasn’t gotten so far as talking an opponent. UFC years back was looking at Fedor vs. Brock Lesnar and had the deal agreed to when Emelianenko decided he didn’t want to fight at the time. More on the story here.

We have an article already on the front page regarding the WWE cruiserweight classic and who is in the tournament. There are some interesting names from a political standpoint entered. Clement Petiot in the tournament wrestles under the name Tristan Archer.

We’re looking for your thoughts on last night’s TNA Slammiversary show, so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match Dave@WrestlingObserver.com.

We’re looking for reports on yesterday’s WWE show in Baton Rouge, anything from Lucha Underground this past weekend, as well as non-Raw notes (Superstars matches, anything not on television) from New Orleans including the return of Shane McMahon, NXT in Belfast, Northern Ireland and TNA tapings in Orlando.

Smackdown and Main Event will be taped Tuesday in Biloxi, MS and NXT runs in Dublin, Ireland. There is also an almost live Impact in Orlando as well as the taping for the following week’s show.

TNA tapings will continue on Wednesday in Orlando. NXT will be in Liverpool, England.

    MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer Radio talking Raw, the cruiserweight tournament, Fedor and the rest of the latest news. You can send questions for the show to mailbag@wrestlingobserver.com.

Going against what could be the deciding game of the NBA playoffs, Raw could take it on the chin tonight without anything major being advertised. It’s the go-home show for Money in the Bank. More than 20 million viewers are expected to watch the game tonight.

Charlotte & Dana Brooke vs. Becky Lynch & Natalya has been added to Sunday’s Money in the Bank PPV in Las Vegas.Last night’s Stanley Cup finals did 5,407,000 viewers against the TNA show. It was the most watched NHL final ever on NBC that didn’t involve the original six teams.  Last night’s game did a 35.1 rating in Pittsburgh and a 9.2 rating in the San Francisco Bay Area. The connection to wrestling includes the Penguins HBK line named after Shawn Michaels. Not missing a trick, HHH sent the Penguins some WWE title belts to wear.

The Fight Network announced today a deal to get the AXS version of New Japan World Pro Wrestling with Jim Ross and Josh Barnett as announcers. The shows will air on Thursday nights at 9 p.m. starting on 7/7.

The $1.8 million judgment awarded to Jesse Ventura in his lawsuit against the estate of Chris Kyle was thrown out on appeal in the 8th U.S. District Court of Appeals. The three judge panel reversed the $1.3 million award saying it fails under law and vacated another $500,000 defamation award but said that could be sent back to court for a new trial.

    WWE

“Growing up in Kirkdale I knew what a headbutt was but I certainly didn’t know about wrestling!”

    UFC

    • Don Frye on the return to UFC of Brock Lesnar from Submission Radio:

Don’s reaction when he saw Lesnar was returning at UFC 200

“Oh my god….. why? Why – since Mark Hunt is going to destroy him. So it’s going to be such a fun fight to watch Mark kick his head off. So I’m looking forward to it.”

Why Mark Hunt will destroy Lesnar

“Oh Mark’s an animal. Yeah he’s an animal. I mean, god damn, he’s one of the better fighters walking the planet. You know and he’s got the strength and the speed and the skill, and shit, he’s like ten-foot-tall and bullet proof.”

If Don’s surprised that Lesnar agreed to fight Hunt

“Yeah, you know, I was with everybody else. I thought they were going to give him some fish. Who’s that pro wrestler (CM Punk) that keeps bailing out of his fight all the time? Yeah, I mean, give him CM Punk (laughs) or somebody worse than that. But jeez, I gotta give it to Lesnar for accepting the fight. First you gotta step into the cage first, and then I’ll give the guy all the credit in the world just for being man enough to let that door close behind him.”

    SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

For those of you who are hockey fans, or aren’t I want to mention the passing of Gordie Howe, Mr. Hockey. He was one of the greatest players in the history of the sport, and the biggest star of the long era between Rocket Richard and Bobby Orr.

Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer Radio covering the news from the weekend including TNA, WWE plus taking e-mail questions you can send tomailbag@wrestlingobserver.com.

Adam Cole will be off tonight’s ROH show in Milwaukee as he was last night’s show in Hopkins, MN, due to being hospitalized with pneumonia.

A story I did on Marc Ratner, who was elected to the boxing Hall of Fame today. A few pro wrestling tidbits in it including some back story on Vince McMahon’s going to Ratner for credibility to do a legit show featuring some big names in 2003.

Donald Trump at a rally in Richmond, VA on Friday talked about having sports celebrities speak at the Republic convention instead of politicians like usual. Trump talked about getting great sports people who like him a lot, mentioning Bob Knight, the former Indiana basketball coach, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Brian France and Dana White. Interesting is he didn’t mention Vince McMahon. He specifically asked the crowd if they knew who Dana White was, and then said all of those guys were winners and champions. Trump made a jab at Chris Christie, who spoke at length at the 2012 convention saying how he spent more time promoting himself than the nominee. Trump said that our country needs to see winners, and that we don’t see winners anymore. He said we have clowns running our country and people who don’t know what they’re doing.

We’ve got Revolution Pro results and hopefully a report up later on the big show in London at York Hall:  Marty Scurll b Noam Dar, Pete Dunne b Martin Stone to keep the cruiserweight title, Big Damo b Big Daddy Walter, Will Ospreay b Mike Bailey, Josh  Bodom b Chris Hero, Charlie Garrett & Joel Redman wont he British tag titles from Sha Samuels & James Castle, Kurt Angle b Zack Sabre Jr.  Angle vs. Sabre was about 9:00.  Ospreay vs. Bailey evidently tore the house down.  Announcements were made for upcoming matches with Bodom vs. Tomohiro Ishii and Sabre vs. Katsuyori Shibata.

    WWE

    • Dwayne Johnson will be appearing Thursday night on the Tonight show with Jimmy Fallon to promote the movie “Central Intelligence” which debuts this coming weekend. He’ll also be on the Graham Norton show on Thursday night at 11:30 p.m. on BBC America.
    • Tomorrow’s go-home Raw show is going to have a tough time as there is no return of John Cena to counteract what could be the deciding game of the NBA Championship series with the Warriors up 3-1 over the Cavs.
    • Paul Levesque left the NXT tour after yesterday’s shows to head to China for WWE business. Levesque was honored yesterday at the Download Festival with the Golden Gods Spirit of Lemmy Award. Levesque and Lemmy were friends and Lemmy performed his entrance music, including on some WrestleManias.
    • Levesque will be interviewed by bodybuilder and trainer Dave Palumbo on the RX Muscle web site live tomorrow at Noon Eastern time. Palumbo is the nutrition guy for Levesque, Stephanie McMahon and has also worked with Linda McMahon in the past. He’s very well informed on the subject. (thanks to Jim Kerr)
    • From the Evolve stuff over the weekend it’s confirmed that Tony Nese has been added to the cruiserweight classic tournament.
    • A very controversial interview from Rene Dupree and also quotes from the former Rodney Mack regarding Chris Nowinski and his business relationship with WWE which Nowinski has said has no foundation here.
    • Darren Young of WWE is participating in today’s Gay Pride parade in Los Angeles. This takes on more meaning after the news of earlier today.
    • Ric Flair, Arn Anderson and ROH’s Taeler Hendrix will be signing autographs at the Houston Comicpalooza on 6/18 and 6/19.
    • LeBron James was wearing an Undertaker shirt shooting around today on the NBA network
    • UFC
    • Brock Lesnar not only will be wearing a Reebok uniform when he fights Mark Hunt, but his nationality listed on his uniform will be Canadian with a Canadian flag. Lesnar now lives on a farm in Saskatchewan. I wonder if he can now be the next Gene Kiniski as a pro wrestler called Canada’s Greatest Athlete. Mike Sharpe doesn’t count because he was a spoof and when Kiniski got the name the reporter who gave it to him was serious.
    • Josh Barnett talks his new movie “Never Back Down” at the G-1 Climax tournament.

    MISCELLANEOUS

    • Kazuchika Okada was backstage yesterday at the Lucha Underground tapings. He did a photo posing with Rey Mysterio Jr. He was in California on a vacation between dates as New Japan is off until Sunday’s Dominion show.

I was told it was a great show with a really spectacular main event. (thanks to Lance LeVine)

  • Daily Update: Bobby Roode NXT debut, Teddy Hart, Slammiversary

Amid a quiet weekend in the world of combat sports, the calm got disrupted a bit Saturday afternoon with news that former TNA World Champion and NXT TakeOver background regular Bobby Roode made his promotional debut at the organization’s two day run at the UK-based Download Festival. Here’s a look at his entrance.

Roode downed Angelo Dawkins in his debut, and could be appearing Sunday as NXT has four hours of matches booked at the Festival. He didn’t appear on last Thursday’s TV tapings, but could be a presence via the magic of videotape with an official contract signing, a promo, etc.

So now what? With many of the top NXT talents expect to be brought up to WWE when the brand extension happens in July, NXT will still need to keep the cupboard stocked with a few veterans to mix with the up and comers. There’s also the concern of WWE bringing up too many talents and not having a plan on what to do with them — something that has plagued them in the past.

Saturday was a nice step forward for Roode and it will be fun to see how NXT debuts him and what the vision is for his career throughout 2016. With more of an opportunity to make an, ahem, impact in the WWE system than ever before, he picked a good time to explore his free agency options after what felt like a lifetime in TNA.

    SATURDAY NEWS UPDATE

Canadian authorities reportedly dropped criminal charges against Teddy Hart stemming from sexual assault allegations in 2014. The case apparently lacked criteria needed for it to proceed. An attorney representing Hart says his client always maintained his innocence. Hart also signed a peace bond to not have any contact for two years with the two women who accused him of the charges. His attorney said Hart has no interest in contacting them.

In an update on the manslaughter trial of a Pennsylvania man accused of causing the death of an 18-month-old by imitating wrestling moves, a judge will not allow the prosecution to show jurors computer-generated videos of the moves. If the 21-year-old man on trial takes the stand to testify, the judge may allow the images shown during cross-examination. The injuries suffered were allegedly from the defendant imitating Undertaker’s Last Ride and Rock’s Rock Bottom. The defense says the death was an accident. The trial is set to begin on Wednesday.

  • Daily Update: Muhammad Ali funeral, NXT TakeOver, Lesnar tested today

    Remembering The Greatest

Today, an estimated 14,000 people attended a Muslim funeral in Louisville, Kentucky for one of, if not the most, famous athletes in the world, Muhammad Ali. As a three-time heavyweight boxing champion of the world, Ali was best known for his gift of promos. Unfortunately, the Parkinsons disease that ended the champion’s career, also left him speechless for the last decade or so of his life. He was an exceptional athlete, a humanitarian, a political activist, but most of all, an entertainer. Ali knew how to promote a fight, and anyone coming up in the world of combat sports would be doing themselves a favor by learning from “The Greatest.”

Start by watching this is the fantastic HBO tribute to Muhammad Ali

Learn all about the birth of MMA by reading Josh Gross’ book on the Ali vs. Inoki fight, which is now available on Amazon.

  • Daily Update: Lesnar & USADA, Nakamura to Japan, NXT Preview

For those curious as to how USADA and UFC will be handling Brock Lesnar and PED testing, we’ve got a lot more on the story here. Basically, since the USADA drug testing standards were not in place when Brock Lesnar announced his retirement from UFC in 2011, he will not have to fulfill the 4 months of pre fight testing. He is being treated like a newly contracted fighter, who just happens to have a fight in a month. So he has only been eligibile for testing since last Friday. However, since he has been under contract to WWE in the last 5 years, he has theoretically been tested and clean since his 2011 retirement.

Muhammad Ali’s funeral takes place in Louisville tomorrow. It was the will of Muhammad Ali to have a free funeral for all to attend, because he really was the people’s champ. The city of Louisville made 15,000 tickets available for free to people who registered, and those tickets were claimed within an hour. The sad part is that many of those tickets are now for sale on the secondary market for hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars. Ali had been clear with his people that when the time came, he wanted everyone to have a chance to share in the memories and legacy that he left for all of us, for free, not for profit, because above all else, Ali stood for freedom.

Today in Professional Wrestling History: Triple H wins King of the Ring; Samoa Joe wins TNA King of the Mountain

    • Daily Update: Kimbo Slice dead, Ospreay wins, Helwani back, Van Zant to WWE

The death of youtube fighting sensation Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson at age 42 has shocked the MMA world. Ferguson, who most recently KO’d Dada 5000 on a Bellator show a few months back, was scheduled to face James Thompson on July 16, in a rematch of their Elite XC fight from 2008. The cause of death for Ferguson was heart failure, although there is some question about that, as Slice had failed a drug test after his Dada 5000 match for elevated Testosterone and Nandrolone. More on this story can be read here.

Will Ospreay surprised no one by winning this year’s New Japan Super Juniors tournament. The 16 man tournament was really a star studded event, especially on the gaijin side which included Matt Sydal, Trent Baretta, Bobby Fish, Kyle O’Reilly, David Finlay, Rocky Romero, and of course, Ricochet. Ospreay went on to defeat Ryusuke Taguchi in the finals to win the entire tournament. More on that here.

      TUESDAY NEWS UPDATE

Ariel Helwani and MMAFighting have been reinstated. After much to-do about the untimely departures of Helwani and his crew from this past weekend at UFC 199, it appears Dana and the Fertitas have changed their mind.

In whatever deal was made to get Brock Lesnar to UFC for 200, we now know what WWE wants in return: Paige Van Zant. They want her for SummerSlam, I guess to fight the Undertaker if Lesnar is KO’d by Hunt. Seems fair.

Also earlier today, Paul Heyman conducted an exclusive sit-down interview with Brock Lesnar to discuss his upcoming fight at UFC 200. You can find out more at HeymanHustle.com.

2K will be announcing this year’s WWE roster shortly. The game is not scheduled to be released until October 2016, but consumers who pre-order WWE 2K17 at any participating retailer will receive two playable characters of legendary WCW and WWE star Bill Goldberg, well as playable WCW Monday Nitro and Halloween Havoc arenas, at no extra cost on launch day. For more information on WWE 2K17 and 2K, visit wwe.2k.com, become a fan on Facebook, follow the game on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #WWE2K17 or subscribe on YouTube.

WWE.com posted an article on former German national soccer team goalkeeper Tim Wiese accepting a deal to start training at the Performance Center. It has also been posted to WWE’s German website and has gotten a good amount of media buzz in Germany today. Wiese, who bulked up big the past few years as he picked up bodybuilding is a charismatic and impressive looking guy at around 6’4″ and about 285 lbs. His contract with his former soccer club of TSG 1899 Hoffenheim is set to expire on 6/30, even though he was cut from the team long before that, in January of 2014. Wiese had publically talked about getting into wrestling, as the media had made comparisons of his physique to those of wrestlers. He appeared in person at a WWE house show in Frankfurt, Germany on November 15, 2014, taking part in a red carpet event before the show and later that night appearing in the ring to celebrate with the Usos after they won their match. He also had a one-day tryout at the Performance Center at some point last year. (Thanks to Marcus Gronemann)

      UFC and other MMA

      • This is an interesting read regarding the Ariel Helwani and MMAFighting.com banning, which was quickly overturned. Columnist Ed Graney accuses the UFC of bullying.
      • The UFC 199 prelims did 798,000 viewers on FS 1 Saturday night slightly up from last month and right in line with what regular shows have been doing this year. There is usually an uptick for shows where Conor McGregor or Ronda Rousey is fighting on the main card, especially in the case of Rousey.
      • Bellator 158, originally scheduled to be headlined by the late Kimbo Slice vs. James Thompson, has lost its co-main event as well as Josh Koscheck pulled out of his scheduled fight with Paul Daley due to injury. Douglas Lima will step in to face Daley in a fight that won’t have a fraction of the interest, although it could be a better fight.
      • A top strawweight fight has been added to UFC 201, as Rose Namajunas will face Karolina Kowalkewicz. That fight would make sense as either the FS 1 or Fight Pass featured prelim, as the winner would be in line for a title shot.
      • Emil Meek, fresh off his KO win over Rousimar Palhares in Italy last month, has signed with UFC and will debut on the show in Hamburg on September 3rd. He’ll face another debuting fighter, Jessin Ayari. Ayari is coming off a win over former UFC fighter Mickael Lebou in April.

    • Daily Update: Lesnar UFC Return, Ariel Helwani fallout

      BROCK LESNAR’S UFC RETURN

One would think that the numbers that Lesnar is bringing in and whatever WWE is getting financially or in trade value or however the deal they made it worth the risk since the deal got done.  Lesnar described it as business when it comes to WWE’s position on Lesnar fighting.

Jim Ross talks the Lesnar fight

Just to clarify something talked about, Laz Benitez of the New York State Athletic Commission told Live Audio Wrestling that “Potential participation by Mr. Lesnar in an August WWE event would depend on his medical fitness and physical condition at the time of the professional wrestling show.  No person is allowed to participate in a professional wrestling exhibition in New York State until he or she is cleared medically fit to do so by a New York State licensed physician.”  That doesn’t answer the question regarding if there is a Nevada commission suspension for a knockout, provided one happens, and whether New York would allow a fighter suspended from sparring and fighting to do a pro wrestling match.  Really, it should all be on a case-by-case basis and depend on if there is a medical suspension.   The full story.

Pro wrestling is regulated in the state of New York but there is no precedent regarding medical suspensions, which states are supposed to enforce, from MMA and them being recognized when it comes to pro wrestling.  That could be significant if Lesnar gets hurt against Mark Hunt in relation to SummerSlam.  It’s just another risk.

Paul Heyman will have an interview on his Heymanhustle.com site at 7 p.m. Eastern tonight with Brock Lesnar.

Figure Four Weekly 5/30/2016: Big Vito’s deposition – If you thought Evan Singleton’s deposition went badly for the plaintiffs in the WWE concussion lawsuit, then that appears to be nothing compared to what happened a week later during Vito LoGrasso’s deposition on May 18th. Given the back and forth over LoGrasso claiming that head injuries caused partial deafness when, in the past, he had spoken of having a hearing impairment since birth, the deposition promised to be interesting. It over-delivered.

      MONDAY NEWS UPDATE

Ariel Helwani goes deep into his relationship with Dana White and the UFC in this solo edition of the MMA Hour.  Plus more on the situation:  Dana White on the ban of Ariel Helwani from getting credentialed at UFC shows, AP covered the story and yet Another story on the situation

UFC needs to have a zero tolerance policy regarding its fighters using any kind of racial, ethnic or sexual slurs going forward and needs to publicly address it since the news of Michael Bisping using a gay slur has broken in a number of places.  This took place either just seconds after we’d left the press conference, or it was said and we couldn’t hear it just as the press conference was breaking up.  I saw the two going back-and-forth verbally after the press conference was over but couldn’t hear what was said and didn’t know until much later.  Bisping used a gay slur in arguing with Rockhold, did immediately figure out he made a mistake and asked that it be deleted.  Bisping needs to apologize quickly for that remark even though from reading the verbiage, it appeared he was sorry and admitted his error immediately.

Bray Wyatt has been medically cleared and is expected to debut imminently, as in as soon as tonight, but if not, very shortly.  If he is to debut, he’s likely to be slotted into Money in the Bank in some form.  Wyatt was a babyface and the Wyatt family were being turned to face the League of Nations when he got hurt.  Now there are no more League of  Nations and WWE is still at the top, weaker on the heel side.

      WWE

      • Just because of all the questions regarding NXT Takeover and UFC 202 going head-to-head, right now the Barclays Center is still listing the Takeover show on 8/20.  As noted last week, the WWE web site had removed the show from the schedule but as they told me, it was put back on and listed for a 7:30 p.m. start time.  If they start the network show at 8 p.m., the show would end very shortly into the start of the PPV which starts at 10 p.m.  It should be noted that Jeremy Botter at Flo Wrestling has reported that C.M. Punk vs. Mickey Gall will be on that show.  I can’t confirm that but Gall has said the fight will take place at the end of the summer and based on other news I’d heard over the weekend regarding that fight, that would indicate if that fight was on PPV, that UFC 202 or 203 would make the most sense.
      • Elias Samson suffered a broken left ankle according to WWE.com in his injury on Friday night in Nashville at the NXT show in the match with Andrade Almas.  Dr. Chris Amann told wwe.com that he will be put in a case and crutches but is expected to make a full recovery.
      • Julia Jensen was announced today as the new Vice President of the Brand Department.  She will report directly to Stephanie McMahon.  She will work across business units to help drive revenue and enhance the company’s brand reputation with advertisers business partners, media and investors.  She came from Mattell where she spent 15 years as Vice President of Global Brands Communications.

Styles in a match with great crowd heat. (thanks to Kale Steed)
      • It should be noted that Styles was booed heavily at all the weekend shows so there was no issue with fans going with the turn.

    • NJPW Best of the Super Juniors results: Block winners determined for tomorrow’s finals

Here we are, one day before the Best of the Super Juniors winner is determined. A lot of questions still remain, the most important one being…who will win their block? We’ll find out tonight as we’re live in Sendai featuring action in both blocks.

      Baretta vs. Jushin Thunder Liger

Quick match, but fine while it lasted. Liger was the latest example of the New Japan dopey babyface falling for a handshake. It’s funny how no one ever learns. Baretta kicked out of a Liger bomb at one point. They had some solid back and forth while it lasted, with Baretta getting the win with the Dudebuster.

      Bobby Fish vs. Tiger Mask

Another good back and forth match. Fish is good at striking, Tiger Mask does well with it too and the two meshed pretty well here. Tiger Mask kicked out a falcon arrow but Fish sinked in the leg lock for the submission.

      Ricochet vs. Chase Owens

Yujiro accompanied Owens to ringside, and sure enough interfered freely throughout the match. Ricochet finally did a great senton dive to the floor that wiped him out. Ricochet busted out a Regalplex and a 450 splash but Yujiro pulled out Tiger Hattori out of the ring. Hattori sent him to the back as Owens got a rollup attempt out of the way. Owens introduced a chair, Ricochet grabbed it but as the ref was taking it away from him Owens pulled something out of his trunks and hit Ricochet for another nearfall. Owens kicked out a benadryller and a brainbuster. Ricochet went to the top rope but Yujiro came out and distracted again. He wiped out Yujiro and went for a phoenix splash but Owens countered, rolled him up with the O’Connor roll and with Yujiro’s help pinned Ricochet to put him out of the tournament. This was really fun.

      Will Ospreay vs. Volador Jr.

The winner here goes to the finals tomorrow. This is actually really spectacular booking as they’ve been teasing the match between these two since the start of the tour. Lots of great high flying moves from both guys. Volador wiped out Ospreay on the outside with an asai moonsault; Ospreay hopped over Volador, flipped and hit a great looking DDT for a near fall. Great match with a really awesome finish. Volador went for the Spanish fly but Ospreay landed on his feet, jumped to the middle rope and hit the springboard stunner for the win. Will Ospreay wins the B Block and advances to the finals tomorrow.

Kazuchika Okada, Yoshi-Hashi and Hirooki Goto vs. Sanada, Evil and Tetsuya Naito

Naito fist bumped with Steve Corino before the match. He  then focused his attention to Milano, who pretended to read his notes when Okada jumped him. Wild brawl out of the ring to start. Everyone you’d think that would work together did. Really good match, one of the better ones they’ve had on this tour. Some really great, fast paced action toward the end. Yoshi-Hashi nearly falls prey to the skull end but Goto saves the match. Sanada finally gets the pinfall with a moonsault.

      Kyle O’Reilly vs. Rocky Romero

Romero flew off with a great knee to O’Reilly after smashing his leg on the turnbuckle. O’Reilly busted out the second Regalplex of the night for a cool nearfall. Romero was planted with a brainbuster, Rocky kicked out but was immediately put in the armbar. He fought hard and managed to get to the ropes. They did a great sequence with Rocky finishing it off with a sliced bread for a close nearfall. He hits a knee strike and pins O’Reilly, putting him out of the tournament. This was really great.

      David Finlay vs. Matt Sydal

Good action. Sydal worked over Finlay a lot but Finally did get some offense in. Sydal caught him with a hurricanrana off the top rope and tried for a shooting star press but Finlay moved out of the way. Sydal fought back with a kick to the temple, then pinned Finlay with the shooting star press. Sydal, Kushida and Taguchi are all still alive at this point.

      Ryusuke Taguchi vs. Gedo

Taguchi comes out wearing a bandana in the same style of Gedo, which of course Gedo is not a fan of. They brawl to the outside where Gedo blatantly uses the bell hammer to attack Taguchi. I guess we’re just doing ECW rules at this point in New Japan. Taguchi makes a comeback with some hip attacks, including a flying one to the outside. Taguchi goes for the rainmaker (I guess to taunt Okada, who is at ringside) but Gedo manages to dodge but gets smacked with a kick. Gedo hit the Complete Shot but when going for the Gedo clutch, Taguchi manages to reverse it, bridge Gedo and gets the win. That puts Sydal out. If Kushida wins, he advances, if not Taguchi wins.

      Kushida vs. Bushi

Bushi jumped Kushida early and spiked him with a DDT on the apron. After a countout tease (there’s been a LOT of these in this tournament) Kushida comes back and we have a nice back and forth contest going here. Kushida fought for the armbar but Bushi escaped, bumped the ref, misted Kushida and hit the codebreaker but Kushida kicked out after all that. A second codebreaker clinches the win for Bushi.

That makes it Will Ospreay vs. Ryusuke Taguchi tomorrow in the Best of the Super Juniors final.

Bushi misted the title and threw it at Kushida after the match, saying he wants the title. That’s a natural title program somewhere down the line. Lots of challengers between him, whoever wins BOTSJ and whoever wins the Super J Cup.

Really good show, by the way. Lots of fun action and the evolving standings throughout added drama to a lot of the matches.

      FINAL POINT TALLIES:

      Block A:

      • Ryusuke Taguchi – 10
      • Matt Sydal – 10
      • Kyle O’Reilly – 8

    • Daily Update: Lesnar to UFC, Bisping new champ, and McGregor vs. Diaz 2

One thing that is really a shame from last night is that the Michael Bisping story of capturing the title walking off a movie set on two weeks notice was trumped so badly by the other big stories that took place.

It’s created an interesting dynamic because Bisping has always been the guy in the middleweight division everyone wanted to fight with the idea he’s good, but beatable. In a fight with top guys, anything can happen and how history changes based on luck, flukes, and inches. It also makes truly dominant fighters like Anderson Silva, Demetrious Johnson, Jon Jones and GSP in their primes even more remarkable. St-Pierre and Silva each may have fallen victim to the bad luck of inches, but they compiled long sets of wins before that happened.  Johnson and Jones have not, and Johnson hasn’t even been tested in a long time.

We talked extensively about the Brock Lesnar story last night on the show. Lesnar’s opponent is expected to be announced tomorrownight on ESPN. OfficiallyUFC said there would be more on his fight in the next 48 or more hours. The thing is, he can get hurt, even if they put him against an opponent everyone feels he can beat. It’s a weird dynamic for UFC using somebody not under contract for a one-off.

Clearly Lesnar isn’t doing this for anything less than a ton of money. I don’t know when the deal was put together and finalized, but Lesnar has been training consistently since April. Josh Barnett has pushed for the fight but I can’t see him facing someone at that level. Still, in the past, Lesnar always had wanted to face the top guys and not waste time facing secondary guys. Of course, everything is different now.

He’s not about chasing the title, or at least there’s no indication he is. Frank Mir, the most logical opponent, is on a drug suspension. Cain Velasquez, who at one point he was interested in facing again, is against Travis Browne. Fedor Emelianenko, who Lesnar had agreed to face a few years ago, is fighting on the 17th.

We’re looking for your thoughts on last night’s UFC 199, as well as today’s Lucha World Cup and tomorrow morning and Tuesday morning’s New Japan shows, so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to Dave@WrestlingObserver.com.

      WWE

      • Congratulations to former WWE stars  Adam “Edge” Copeland and Beth (formerly Phoenix) on the birth of a daughter, Ruby, on Tuesday.
      • WWE is going to start pushing Bill Goldberg with the video game deal as the WWE network will be releasing a Bill Goldberg collection of matches tomorrow. It’ll feature his biggest matches from WCW against Hugh Morrus, Steve McMichael, William Regal (the famous match that was made out to be something it wasn’t as it was not a shoot, just a match that fell apart), Raven, Hulk Hogan, DDP, Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Bret Hart, The Rock and HHH.
      • The Network has also released three famous AWA shows, the April 23, 1983 Super Sunday show with Hulk Hogan vs. Nick Bockwinkel for the AWA title and Mad Dog Vachon & Verne Gagne vs. Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissie & Jerry Blackwell (an interesting match is a pre-Brutus Beefcake called Eddie Boulder facing Wahoo McDaniel), the April 20, 19806 Wrestlerock show from the Metrodome in Minneapolis with The Road Warriors vs. Michael Hayes & Jimmy Garvin, Greg Gagne & Jimmy Snuka vs. Bruiser Brody & Nord the Barbarian, leading to Verne Gagne vs. Kaissie, Stan Hansen vs. Nick Bockwinkel for the AWA title, Harley Race vs. Rick Martel, Barry Windham & Mike Rotunda vs. Fabulous Ones; and the December 13, 1988 Superclash show headlined by Jerry Lawler vs. Kerry Von Erich for the AWA title vs. World Class title.
      • Interesting to note that the day after Muhammad Ali passed away, that Gorilla Monsoon, who did the angle with him in 1976 to build up the Inoki match for the U.S. audiences, would have turned 79.
      • A story on American Alpha can be read here.

      MISCELLANEOUS

      • Brandi Runnels (Eden Stiles) at this point is going to be working outside wrestling while Cody will be working indies. The one announced show with Cody vs. Mike Bennett with Brandi Rhodes, as she’s being called, is more to do a story of counteracting Maria Kanellis. But it’s not going to be a regular thing at this point.
      • Pro Wrestling Sheet is reporting that Adam Rose will use his party boy gimmick on the Indies using the name Aldo Rose and will be taking indie bookings. Right now he can’t appear on TV or iPPV until the late summer. He said, “Ain’t no more PG in this party.”

      • New European Championship Wrestling, which is Alex Wright’s group in Germany has signed a new international TV deal that began on Friday night with HD Fightbox as we noted eariler in the week.  It’s a monthly airing of a show in a minor station in Germany that also airs in Austria and Switzerland mostly as part of an on-line television providers package.  The station also airs ROH but only the most hardcore of fans would get the station because it’s not a regular TV station that everyone gets.  There was a minor buzz when they announced a TV deal but this I’m told ended up viewed as a disappointment as it’s an obscure online only channel and fans could already get the shows on VOD on Vimeo, so it wasn’t breaking new ground.

Today in Professional Wrestling History: Eric Bischoff downs Terry Funk for WCW Hardcore title

    • Daily Update: The passing of Muhammad Ali, UFC 199 tonight

      MUHAMMAD ALI

Muhammad Ali is very likely the most well known and important figure in the history of sports.  Besides Jackie Robinson, no other athlete may have had as great an impact on society, as Ali’s refusal to participate in the Vietnam War stands out as a seminal moment in American history.  That’s to say nothing of his public conversion to Islam and his steadfast refusal to play down his faith.  Those two acts alone helped to define a generation.

Of course, his fame was international as well, and that same influence was felt throughout the globe.  From Kinshasa, Zaire (now Democratic Republic of the Congo), site of the famous Rumble in the Jungle, to the Philippines, home to the Thrilla in Manila, Ali truly was a World Champion.

His connections to pro wrestling are thoroughly documented, with Ali crediting pro wrestling for influencing his bombastic public persona.  And in a funny twist, Ali’s fight with Antonio Inoki ended up essentially being the birth of mixed martial arts.

Ali’s legacy is one that would fill several books and will safely live on for decades.  There was never a man like him before and there will never be one like him again.

      Tons more on Muhammad Ali:

New Zealand Herald looks at his famous fight with Antonio Inoki. The article includes a video with Gene LeBell talking about the damage Inoki’s leg kicks had on Ali.

Miami Herald has a story about Dusty Rhodes saying he almost had a match with Ali in Florida. The article includes a link to a video of Dusty telling the story (the Ali part starts at 3:35).

Yahoo! Sports describes how Ali not only influenced pro wrestling and MMA but how wrestling promos also influenced him.

Forbes looks back to 1995 when Ali attended the festival in North Korea that featured a Ric Flair vs. Antonio Inoki pro wrestling match as the main event. A few weeks back on Chris Jericho’s podcast, Flair talked about that trip and told stories about flying to North Korea with Ali and his entourage.

A Calgary Herald an article mentions that Ali was once given a photograph of himself posing with Stu Hart. The person that gave the photo to Ali said he was speechless. The photo and him being unable to speak at the time were both rare.

A sports news site from the Philippines briefly mentions Ali getting some inspiration from pro wrestling when listing things you may not know about him.

Here is a classic Muhammad Ali promo featuring some often quotes lines: “I have wrestled with an alligator… tussled with a whale… handcuffed lightning… thrown thunder in jail…”

Here is a collection of clips featuring some of his best promos (starts at :37). Besides his promos, highlights include a pull-apart brawl with Joe Frazier in a studio with Howard Cosell doing play-by-play.

Here is Freddie Blassie doing a run-in during an Ali appearance on The Tonight Show with guest host McLean Stevenson (of M*A*S*H fame). It was part of the promotion leading into the Inoki fight.

Here is Ali jumping in the ring to confront and throw hands with Gorilla Monsoon on a WWWF show in 1976. After Ali starts jabbing him, Monsoon picks Ali up in an airplane spin with Vince McMahon calling the action on commentary. The angle was part of the build towards Ali vs. Inoki.

Here is Ali vs. Buddy Wolfe in boxer vs. wrestler exhibition match on an AWA card from Chicago in 1976. It was also part of the buildup to Ali vs. Inoki. That match aired on ABC during a “Wide World of Sports” broadcast and features an intro by Howard Cosell. Verge Gagne is the referee. Freddie Blassie is a cornerman.

Here is Ali vs “Sodbuster” Kenny Jay in another boxer vs. wrestler exhibition on an AWA card in the Midwest. Gagne was also the referee in this match.

Here is Ali cutting promos on Inoki at a press conference in Japan promoting their fight. Inoki was mostly laughing at his insults.

Here is an extended trailer for a promising new documentary on the Inoki vs. Ali fight.

Here are highlights from Ali vs. Inoki.
