  • WWE: SummerSlam staying in Brooklyn for the next two years (updated)

    After the big success of WWE SummerSlam weekend at Brooklyn, NY’s Barclays Center with three straight sellouts, WWE announced Monday that the building will be, at least for the next two years, the site of its No. 3 show of the year, releasing the story through the New York Daily News.

    The WWE will have shows on Saturday with a major NXT show, Sunday with SummerSlam, and a live Raw in both 2016 and 2017 in the arena. In addition, there will be other events including panels, etc.

    Because the New York market can bear the highest tickets prices in the country with the possible exception of Las Vegas, this year’s SummerSlam did a $1.3 million gate and tickets on the secondary market had record demand.

    The dates announced for the weekends are August 20-22 of 2016 with NXT, SummerSlam, and Raw in that order.  The 2017 weekend dates are August 19-21.

    “We are thrilled to build on the success of the 2015 SummerSlam and welcome WWE back to Brooklyn in 2016 an 2017, said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.  “Big events like SummerSlam help cement New York City’s appeal as a dynamic, high-energy destination.  We’re thankful for WWE’s commitment to Brooklyn, and look forward to a long partnership that benefits the City.”  

  • WWE Superstars 9/25 TV results & recap: Jack Swagger vs. Adam Rose, R-Truth vs. Heath Slater

    The Big Takeaway: Jack Swagger beat Adam Rose and his ever-terrible new gimmick while R-Truth dismissed Heath Slater in a quick, entertaining bout. Xavier Woods is still the best thing about this show.

    R-Truth beat Heath Slater (3:34)

    They opened things up by exchanging wristlocks. Things quickly break down, however, in to an impromptu dance off. This is pretty much the formula for the 4-minute R-Truth match on Superstars. A quick hip toss from Truth sees him then mount Slater in the corner for punches on the second rope, but he is crotched. Slater takes over with his own punches, until a slap from Truth throws him off his balance. Truth kicks him in the guts but then runs into a scissor kick, which floors him. After stomps from Slater, he slaps on a chin lock and then covers Truth for two.

    Truth then gets the heat with clotheslines and a heel kick, followed by the Lie Detector for the win. All through Slater’s offense section Woods was putting over the fact that Slater was a one-time beat the clock winner against Seth Rollins on Raw and so should be in for a title shot. When Rich Brennan was incredulous at one stage in the match, Woods just quietly remarked in mock-disgust, “there’s so much you need to learn about this industry”. He’s fast becoming very good in the role.

    Jack Swagger beat Adam Rose (7:57)

    My god, this Adam Rose gimmick. He came out for his usual pre-match promo, looking like he’d actually make a pretty good third wheel in The Vaudevillians on NXT, moaning about how he was going to “poop” all over the WWE Universe’s party. It would have been terrible on a really bad Indy card that had no TV. It really has no place here.

    They lock up but Rose immediately goes to ropes to break off and Swagger then grabs him and hits him with a belly to back suplex. Swagger then runs into Rose’s elbow, and he slaps on a headlock. When Swagger gets out, he uses a side headlock takedown and then runs through Rose with shoulder barges and uses a huge lariat to send him over the top rope. Swagger leads the crowd in a “We the people!” as we head to a break.

    Swagger is dominating as we return, punching Rose in the corner. He then tosses Rose over the top rope, but he lands on the apron, and Swagger turns round to find Rose using the top rope to choke him. Rose then takes over and lands elbows, steps on his throat and applies a sleeper hold. When Swagger gets out, Rose grabs his hair and throws him to the mat.

    Rose continues to work over Swagger with kicks and punches. He lands a double knee drop and then goes back to a rear chin lock. He turns this into a sleeper and Swagger manages to use the turnbuckle to force Rose off. Swagger then gets the heat with huge clotheslines, a Swagger Bomb and then covers Rose for two. He then double legs and goes for the Patriot Lock, but gets posted.

    Rose stomps his foot a la Shawn Michaels as if to set up for Sweet Chin Music. Instead of a super kick, it sets up a fairly meager low kick to take out Swagger’s left leg. Rose uses a DDT, and comes off the top rope with a big flying double axe handle to Swagger’s back. Swagger kicks out of the cover at two. Woods makes this infinitely more fun by throwing himself into the drama of it all, going crazy on commentary. Rose goes up top again but this time is caught in the Patriot Lock and he taps instantly.

  • WWE 9/28 Syracuse, NY, house show results: John Cena vs. Seth Rollins

    – WWE Tag Team Champions New Day beat Primetime Players & Dudleys. After the match, New Day tried to put one of the Dudleys through a table, but instead Xavier ended up taking the 3D through the table.

    – Curtis Axel & Damien Sandow beat Los Matadores in a quick match. The Matadores worked as heels (I don’t remember if they made a turn on television). Torito came out to help Axel & Sandow, which led to the finish. 

    – Chris Jericho beat Luke Harper in a good match. Jericho was super over. 

    – Ryback beat WWE I-C Champion Kevin Owens by DQ (eye rake). Ryback got a good crowd reaction. He laid out Owens after the match. 

    – WWE Divas Champion Charlotte & Becky Lynch beat the Bellas (with Fox at ringside). Bellas got the heat on Becky, then Charlotte made the comeback and won with the Figure 8. Not much to the match.

    – Big Show beat Cesaro clean with a chokeslam. Better than expected. 

    – WWE U.S. Champion John Cena beat WWE Champion Seth Rollins with the AA in a good, long match. Both worked really hard. 

  • WWE 9/27 Erie, PA, house show results: Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose vs. Wyatts

    – Neville beat Stardust in 9:30 with the Red Arrow.

    – Jack Swagger made the Miz tap out to the ankle lock in 9 minutes

    – Lucha Dragons over the Ascension in 7:45.  Kids were into the Dragons.  Kalisto’s mask actually came off when he did a splash onto the Ascension but luckily he landed face down and was able to put the mask back on within a few seconds. 

    – Adam Rose came out with somewhat of a new gimmick.  He wore black dress pants and blue dress shirt with white glasses.  He told all the fans they are looser and should leave.  This went on for about 3 minutes until Jimmy Uso superkicked Rose to start and end the match in 5 seconds.

    – Street fight: Randy Orton beat Sheamus in 20 minutes with the RKO. Good psychology by Orton leading to the RKO

    – Natalia beat Naomi in 5:30

    – Dolph Ziggler over Rusev in 17 minutes. Rusev showed real good intensity and Ziggler is always good.

    – Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose beat Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman. Good crowd reaction throughout the match.  Strowman looked real green but he is new.  The other 3 looked great.

    Notes:

    – 20 minutes before the show started, they had the fans vote on what match they want to see on the monitor above the ring.  The choices were all from past Summerslams.  The choices were Undertaker vs Shawn Michaels, Undertaker vs Mick Foley or Undertaker vs Edge.  Undertaker vs Edge won.

    – Attendance was way down from the last show here.  One side of ringside seats was only about 10% full.  Overall floor seats were only about 30 percent full.  Seems like the price of those tickets went way up since the last show here.  Overall, I’m estimating the crowd at only 2,500.

    Here is a quick run down of the live event in Erie tonight.

    Arrived at the end of the first match which had Neville going over Stardust. What I saw of it was awesome. Really had the crowd going.

    Swagger over The Miz in what was easily the laziest match of the night. My wife has never been to a live event and rarely watches the product but she even commented on how slow they were and how little they appeared to be trying. 

    Lucha Dragons get the win against The Ascension. Match was entertaining and got the crowd rolling after the Miz/Swagger snooze fest. 

    Jimmy Uso goes over Adam Rose with a super kick after Rose antagonizes the crowd. I guess Rose was trying out a new gimmick which I had not  seen. He was wearing a collared shirt tucked in to slacks with thick rimmed glasses. His promo probably lasted 5 minutes at the very least. Nothing remarkable. Seems like he is on his way out the door and they are just throwing him out there to fill time. As soon as he finished talking Uso delivered the kick and it was over in less than 10 seconds.

    Last bout before intermission was Orton and Sheamus in a street fight. Match went about 15 minutes I am guessing with Orton going over with an RKO. Good hard fight that was pretty physical. Sheamus got thrown through a table leaning against the ring post which got a nice pop.

    Ziggler over Rusev in a nice hard fought bout. Ziggler nails the Zig-Zag shortly after Summer Rae smacks him with her shoe and she is sent back to the locker room. No flirting  between the two.

    Second to last match is Natty and Naomi with Natty getting the sub via sharp shooter. My wife is really into the Divas since we began watching Total Divas together. She enjoyed the match but was sad it was the only divas bout on the card.

    Main Event was Dean and Roman vs. Bray and Braun. Crowd popped big for Ambrose and Reigns. Only saw half the match before leaving. We took my 10 month old and he had about had it so we got while the getting was good.

  • WWE 9-26 Cleveland house show results: Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose vs. Wyatts, Fast Lane announcement

    – They announced they return to Cleveland for the Fast Lane PPV in February.

    – Neville beat Stardust with a 450 splash.

    – Kalisto & Sin Cara beat Ascension when Sin Cara pinned Viktor after a swanton. Decent match. Ascension were the least over act of the two house shows I saw this weekend.

    – Jimmy Uso beat Adam Rose. Rose came out in a vest and glasses and cut a promo, attempting to stop the show. The referee rang the bell regardless. Uso superkicked him immediately and hit the splash off the top for the finish.

    – Jack Swagger beat Miz with the ankle lock. Miz cut a promo first acting like a face in his hometown, but quickly turned back heel. 

    – Street fight: Randy Orton beat Sheamus. They used a Singapore cane. A table spot for a false finish. Orton got the pin with the RKO. Solid match. Went probably just under 20 minutes.

    0 Dolph Ziggler beat Rusev. Best match of the night. They went somewhere over 15 minutes, lots of near falls, Summer Rae hitting Ziggler with the high heel for a false finish. Rusev’s execution and presence were excellent. I was most impressed with his performance over anybody else I saw on this show or the Toronto show the night before with the Cena tour.

    – Roman Reigns & Dean Ambrose beat Bray Wyatt & Braun Strowman. Reigns pinned Wyatt after the spear for the finish. Strowman was protected as monster who doesn’t bump. In doing so, he looked fine, not out of place. Pops for Reigns and Ambrose I thought were close to equal, though there were audible screams from women when Reigns tagged in for the first time. Reigns was not booed at all.

    The Toronto show the night before with the Cena tour was a far better show.

  • Interview: Seth Rollins talks about his workout and The Shield.

    WWE World Champion Seth Rollins joined the Chad Dukes Wrestling Show this week to discuss “Night of Champions,” facing both Sting and John Cena in one night, his CrossFit regimen, winning the WWE Championship, reconnecting with The Shield and more.

    On working CrossFit into his workout:

    “I mean it’s the one thing that I do really that nobody else does and I’m doing a lot of things in the ring that nobody else does,so for me I feel like those two things kind of go hand in hand.  I couldn’t do traditional bodybuilding and keep this schedule, it just wouldn’t work for me,  I don’t think it works really for our generation of guys.  More and more you’re seeing guys transfer over into functional fitness as opposed to training for aesthetics.  The side effect of training functionally with high intensity, which is what CrossFit is that you also happen to look pretty decent as well.  For me it serves two purposes, I get the job done in the ring, I look the part, and I stay super healthy all the time.”

    On The Shield:

    “We get to fire up the band in other incarnations.  We always laugh about it now when we do these tag matches and six mans and I’m on the other side of the ring and they’re like partnered up with Randy Orton or something like that.  It’s just funny because you can put the components in all the different places, but it’s still comes out gold every time.  The two of those guys, myself, I feel like paved the way for a different kind of work ethic than what we had been seeing in WWE over the past five years, maybe before that.  That’s something I know the three of us are real proud of and every time we go out there we’re going out there to have the best match and steal the show weather working against each other, with each other it doesn’t matter, and that’s just kind of the attitude we came in with and we stuck to our guns this entire time and it’s cool to be able to share that with two other guys.  The time we had with The Shield, who knows if it will ever come back around but if it doesn’t no one will ever be able to take that run away from us either.”

    On  Joey Mercury:

    “Joey is responsible for first of all getting me signed in WWE, second of all he was responsible for getting Ambrose signed, he played a huge hand in training Roman Reigns from the ground up.   You look at those three things but it’s more than that,  I mean Joey as a performer is one of the best ever as far as just in the ring, the smoothness with which he moves inside the ring is pretty unparalleled and his mind for the industry is really incredible. He’s a guy that I love to death, someone I consider a mentor, a brother, and honestly the WWE you see today wouldn’t exist without him.  He’s such a huge cog in the machine in the back. he’s responsible for helping us out, putting matches together, booking the live events, he’s got a lot on his plate, and he does an incredible job.”

  • WWE: Steve Austin says he will not be returning at Wrestlemania 32

    The question of who is wrestling Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania has apparently whittled down a couple of the biggest names.

    Steve Austin on Twitter said, “You can take my name off the rumor mill as a Brock Lesnar opponent at WrestleMania 32.  Bullshit reporting.”

    With Lesnar vs. Undertaker no longer one of the scheduled main events at WrestleMania, the question became who would be the new opponents for both at Texas Stadium next year.

    Austin had said a few months ago that it wasn’t going to happen.  He would likely have been the biggest drawing potential opponent, but hasn’t wrestled in 11 1/2 years and has given no indication he was going to ever wrestle again.  His doing a podcast with Lesnar on 10/19 fueled some speculation, but he appears to have shut the door on it again.

    Sources close to the situation have also told us that Dwayne Johnson is currently not scheduled to be wrestling Lesnar on the show.

  • WWE NXT 9/23 TV results: Vaudevillains defend the gold, Asuka’s debut

    Greetings to all my fellow Empire members. Gather around and listen to the stories of a certain show taped in front of 300 people in a college in Winter Park, Florida!

    The Big News: The Vaudevillians lost in the Dusty Classic, but retained their titles in the main event, defeated Blake & Murphy.

    The Medium News: Kana is now Asuka, but you probably already knew that.

    The Little Beaver-sized News: Tyler Breeze was informed by the cameraman that he will be wrestling Apollo Crews at Takeover.

    The Recap:

    Eva Marie defeated Carmella by countoutEva cut an inset promo where she thanked the referee from three weeks ago for holding up his count when she forgot to kick out of a suplex. This is a rematch from Brooklyn when these two squared off. This match was horrible, made worse by Corey Graves being obnoxious. Eva did this horrible walking boot across the ring that they showed a replay of. The fans chanted “Botox Everything” at Eva Marie.

    They are continuing the gimmick where Eva Marie has matches lost, but somehow she doesn’t lose. Carmella had the pin after driving Eva’s face into her boot, but the referee held up his count at 2. Turns out Eva’s foot was touching the bottom rope. The finish saw Eva threw Carmella outside the ring and Carmella couldn’t get back in the ring, so she got counted out in an anticlimactic finish.

    – Another video package for Nia Jax aired. She’s eventually going to arrive in NXT. I believe it’s now been 6 weeks

    – A video package hyping the Bayley-Sasha match aired. This featured a completely different Bayley, totally low key and talking like an adult woman, as opposed to the character she plays.

    Tyler Breeze pinned Bull Dempsey

    Bull came out in his Michael Elgin robe. I just noticed that it looks a lot like Dr. Death Steve Williams’ robe too. The last time these two sports entertained was the infamous match where Bull was unable to take a lap around the ring.

    Bull was standing on the apron and winding up for a punch when Tyler shoved Bull off the apron, sending him crashing on the ramp, which was the finish of the last match and almost the finish here. They compared Bull Fit favorably to P90X. In all fairness I do not hate Bull as much as I hate Tony Horton.

    This match was dull and the fans amused themselves by chanting “All Bull Everything” and “Bullfit” in the cadence of “Bullshit”. Bull made his comeback, using his stomach as an offensive maneuver. Breeze rolled outside the ring to get away from a top rope move, but Bull pulled him back in and ascended the ropes. Tyler threw him off the top rope and pinned him with his feet on the ropes.

    NOTE: After Tweeting out about Bull Dempsey’s robe and its similarity to Michael Elgin’s and Dr. Death’s, Elgin tweeted me back saying that he borrowed the concept from Dr. Death himself.

    – The theme song for NXT Takeover: Respect is called Happy Song. No joke.

    – A video package from the weekend tour of Texas. They did not mention the giant upset in the Dusty Rhodes Classic where Dash & Dawson defeated The Vaudevillians to advance to Takeover.

    Mr. Regal was in the ring for a contract signed with the newest NXT Diva: Kana

    She was Asuka before the commercial break and before I could finish typing that, her Titantron changed names from Kana to Asuka.

    She has pink hair and is very very happy to be here. She yelled ‘YAAAYYYYYYY!” into the microphone before saying she was happy to be here on NXT. She might literally be the happiest person to ever be on this show. In broken English she happily announced her desire to be champion. I once had a supervisor at Jackson Hewitt in Hazleton, Pennsylvania who was so happy we used to joke he must have been on drugs. I think Asuka is happier.

    Dana Brooke and Emma came out to introduce themselves. Emma talked slowly to Asuka as if she were 4 years old, saying they are NXT’s welcoming committee. They told her that if she plans to survive in the locker room, she needs to respect them as the leaders of the locker room.

    Dana said they ran Charlotte and Becky out of NXT and if Asuka doesn’t play nice her career will be over before it begins. They told her to leave the ring, which, shockingly, she did. The fans chanted no at her, but she walked away with her head bowed. At the top of the ramp Asuka just turned and smiled at them. I don’t want to alarm you, but this is far from over.

    -Tyler Breeze was asked about his match vs Apollo Crews at Takeover. Conveniently Crews just happened to be walking up to Tyler and said he hopes Tyler is just as excited as he is.

    -Kyle Edwards filled us in on the updates of the Dusty Rhodes Classic. Next week on NXT is Balor & Joe vs Enzo & Big Cass and the winners will face Dash & Dawson. On the other side of the bracket it will be the Hype Bros vs Chad Gable & Jason Jordan this weekend at a house show, with the winners facing Rhyno & Baron Corbin.

    NXT Tag Team Champions The Vaudevillians defeated Blake & Murphy

    Can Blake & Murphy become the first team to become two time NXT Tag Team Champions? Adrian Neville is a 2-time champion, but he had three different partners. Him and the long forgotten Oliver Grey became the first NXT Tag Champions, but Oliver got injured, so Bo Dallas filled in for the end of the reign. Then Kassius Ohno & Corey Graves were the #1 Contender’s, but Kassius got a storyline injury, so Corey teamed with Neville to become unlikely champions, defeating the Wyatt Family.

    The fans chanted for Blue Pants, who was not there for the first 30 seconds. Then Alexa got involved quickly, so Pants ran down and chased Alexa away. The heels got the heat on English, but Aiden fought back and did an impressive double hiptoss to both challengers at the same time. Aiden tried to build on this momentum outside the ring, but Blake gave him a side suplex on the ring apron.

    English eventually slapped Murphy so hard that Murphy should contact his lawyer. Simon got the hot tag and went wild on Blake. They went for their finish, but Blake got his knees up when Aiden went for the swanton. Murphy hit a top rope knee, but only got a 2 count. Finally the champs retained with the Whirling Dervish. I was actually surprised as I expected Blake and Murphy to get the belts back.

    The show ended with promos by Enzo & Colin and Samoa Joe & Finn Balor building up their quarter final match next week. Next week is already the go-home show for Takeover, so who is going to the Final Four of the Dusty Classic?
