  • Bellator: Bobby Lashley vs James Thompson rematch set for November 6th

Bellator just announced on tonight’s broadcast that TNA’s Bobby Lashley(13-2) will face James Thompson (20-14,. 1 no contest) on 11/6 at the at Scottrade Center in St. Louis.

Lashley vs. Thompson will be on Bellator’s final major event this year, a show that features two championship matches.

Patricio Pitbull Freire vs. Daniel Straus for the featherweight title will headline the show, along With Will Brooks vs. Marcin Held for the lightweight title.

Thompson was interviewed on tonight’s show from Hidalgo, TX, and told Lashley to stick to pretend fighting.

Thompson defeated Lashley via decision on May 6, 2012, in India.  Lashleyvs. Thompson has been scheduled twice this year, in February and again in June.  Lashley pulled out of the first fight with a hand injury and Thompson pulled out of the second fight due to injury.

  • Bellator 143 live results: Joe Warren vs. L.C. Davis

Welcome to WrestlingObserver.com’s live coverage of Bellator 143: Warren vs. Davis from the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. The event is headlined by a bantamweight title eliminator bout as former Bellator Bantamweight Champion Joe Warren takes on L.C. Davis. The co-main event is a middleweight contest between Joey Beltran and Kendall Grove. The main card airs on Spike TV at 9 PM ET with preliminary card action on Spike.com beginning at 6:30 PM ET. We will post prelims results as they happen and start live play by play when the Spike broadcast begins.

    Prelims results:

Jose Flores (5-0) 1st round KO (kicks) over Gilbert Jimenez in 2:17

    John Teixeira (20-1-2) SD win over Gleristone Santos (28-29, 29-28 x 2)

Dan Charles (10-3) 2nd round KO (punches) over Chase Gormley

Darrion Caldwell (8-0) by 1st round submission at 2:35 (rear naked choke) over Shawn Bunch

Steve Garcia (6-0) by 1st round TKO at 4:59 (punches) over Eduardo Bustillos

Amador Ramirez (5-4) UD win over Saul Elizondo (29-28 x 3)

Abdul Razak (4-0) 1st round KO (punch) over Bryce Sheppard-Mejia in 1:26

And we’re live with the main card and the fighters are in the ring!

Heavyweights Vinicius Spartan (7-3) vs Ewerton Teixeira (3-0)

Big John is the referee for the opening bout. Spartan with a takedown 1:00 in. Quickly gets into side control and lands punches and elbows to the head. Teixeira sweeps into top position at 2:30. Spartan working for a triangle from the bottom but Teixeira out and to his feet. Standup is pretty even, with Spartan controlling the pace. Spartan with a flash takedown at 4:30 but Teixeira right back up. 10-9 Spartan

This is  the first action in over 2 years for each guy, Sean Grande informs us. Ken Shamrock is in the building. The announcers were going on about the “new scoring system” again in the prelims. Teixiera looks to be cut between the eyes from the damage done by Spartan in round 1. Spartan with a takedown at 1:45. Not much happening on the ground but Spartan is trying to advance and working for an armbar. Spartan landing elbows to the head and body around 3:30. Spartan gets an arm triangle and the tap after a series of elbows to the head to get the win.

WINNER – VINICIUS SPARTAN (8-3) by submission (arm triangle) at 4:00

Featherweights Emmanuel Sanchez (10-2) vs Henry Corrales (12-1)

Both guys are considered prospects but have losses to former Bellator champions. Randy Couture was just shown on camera at ringside in the background but not identified. His son was scheduled to fight in the prelims but his opponent missed weight by SEVENTEEN POUNDS.

Corrales getting the better of the standup early on, opening up a cut on the forehead of Sanchez. Sanchez with a flying triangle at 2:15 and it seems in pretty tight. Sanchez grabs an arm in an attempt to tighten the grip but Corrales escapes and ends up in top  position. Sanchez escapes and to his feet at 4:15. Sanchez’ face is all bloody but he’s winning the round. 10-9 Sanchez

They are going to re-air the Shawn Bunch/Darion Caldwell fight from the prelims. That was a great performance by Caldwell. Sanchez backs up Corrales with a punch/knee combo and takes him down at 1:30. Corrales to his feet at 2:30. They are going to announce Bobby Lashley’s opponent for Vengeance later tonight. Standup again is pretty even. Corrales with some bruising and swelling under his right eye. Sanchez takes Corrales’ back standing and takes him down right before the end of the round and gets a rear naked choke right at the end of the round. 10-9 Sanchez

Sanchez controlling the pace early in the round. Punches are coming much slower on both sides now. Sanchez connecting with a lot of kicks to the body and head while Corrales is almost exclusively punching. Corrales with a nice litle flurry of  punches at 4:00 and then defends a takedown attempt by Sanchez. Sanchez got a takedown right at the end of the round. Close but probably Sanchez’ as well. I’ve got it 30-27 Sanchez

WINNER – EMMANUEL SANCHEZ (11-2) by split decision (27-30, 30-27, 29-28). No idea how anyone in their right mind could give Corrales all 3 rounds there. That judge should not be judging MMA.

They just announced Lashley’s opponent in November as James Thompson. Yup, they’re trying to sign that one again. We shall see. Thompson, of course, won the first matchup 3 1/2 years ago and they’ve been scheduled twice since then and Thompson has pulled out due to injury both times.

Middleweights Joey Beltran (16-11) vs Kendall Grove (21-15)

This could be a loser leaves town match with Beltran having lost 3 of his last 5 and Grove 2 of his last 3. Both likely have bigger price tags than the majority of the roster. Hard to believe Beltran was a heavyweight not all that long ago. Kerry Hatley is the ref, so expect some shenanigans.

Grove looks like the one who would be two weight classes above Beltran as he seriously looks like he could trim down to Welterweight, if not lightweight. Both guys keeping their distance early on. Crowd turning on the fight halfway through the first as they may not have landed 10 punches between them. Grove pushes him to the cage and lands a nice punch combo at 2:45. Announcer tonight are talking a lot about The Ultimate Fighter on Spike, in this case relating it to Grove. I find that interesting for some reason. Way more interesting than this fight. Beltran seems to be the aggressor so may be winning the round but neither guy has done much of anything. 10-9 Beltran, I guess.

Sean Grande called that an entertaining first round in his very best Tony Schiavone impersonation. Strikes landed were 27-8 for Grove in Round 1. They threw almost the same amount though. They were actually debating whether that first round could be 10-8 Grove. WHAT? Beltran with a takedown at 1:45 but lets Grove up right away. Nice punch exchange at 2:15. Beltran starting to control the cage at 2:45. Grove bleeding from the mouth after  the punch exchange. Beltran starting to land leg kicks at will. Grove just keeping away and throwing from distance. Grove’s leg starting to buckle every time he gets hit at the end of the round. Crowd booing again as Grove is essentially just running away. 10-9 Beltran

Grove landing from distance at the start of the round. Grove also throwing leg kicks of his own. Grove with a nice kick/punch combo at 1:30 that backs Beltran up. But Beltran still basically chasing him around the cage. Beltran gets inside the range and lands a nice combo at 2:15. Grove runs away again. Grove knocks Beltran down with a punch out of nowhere and he was out but got  one more punch in before Hatley stopped it. Nice finish but terrible fight.

WINNER – KENDALL GROVE (22-15) by KO (punch) at 2:27 of Round 3

They interviewed James Thompson at cageside. With his thick accent it was hard to make anything out but he seems eager to fight Lashley again. Might be #PlansChange as they are saying the main event is next, meaning no re-airing of the Bunch/Caldwell fight.

Main Event – Bantamweights Joe Warren (12-4) vs LC Davis (13-6)

They aired the walkouts but nothing special. Warren gets a title shot with a win and could be done with a loss as this is the last fight on his contract. John McCarthy is the ref. He stopped the fight where Warren lost the title by verbally submitting where Warren took a tantrum afterward. Warren controlling the action early and gets a takedown 1:15 in. Warren just holding him down and doing just enough to avoid a standup. Warren postures up at 3:15 to land some hammerfists and then right back into Davis’ guard. Davis almost made it to his feet at 4:15 but Warren dragged him right down again. Crowd starting to boo. 10-9 Warren unless you’re going with the alleged “new scoring” and then it’s a 10-8

Davis hit with an accidental eye poke to start the round. Sean Grande does the Michael Cole fake laugh when John McCarthy asks Davis if he can see and then if he’s ugly. Warren takes Davis down immediately on the restart but Davis to his feet right away. Davis pressing the action in this round, connecting with more punches. Warren went for an angle slam at 1:45 but Davis slid off his shoulders. Warren with a takedown at 2:45. Davis landing light punches to the head and body from the bottom as Warren tries to pass. Davis to his feet but Warren takes his back and drags him back down with a Greco Roman throw. Warren back into top position at 4:15.  10-9 Warren

Warren with a takedown 30 seconds in. Davis up quickly but Warren stays on his back and brings him down again. Warren into top position at 1:15. Jimmy Smith gave round 2 to Warren. I guess it was closer than Round 1 but seemed pretty clearly for Warren to me. Davis up but Warren takes him down again at 2:30. Warren takes his back at 3:00, which allows Davis to get to his feet. Warren takes him down again at 3:45. Davis landing punches to the body and head from the bottom. Warren with a couple of hard elbows from the top. Warren into mount at 4:30. Davis works out of it but Warren still all over him. 10-9 Warren

    WINNER – JOE WARREN (13-4) by unanimous decision (30-27 x 3)

Crowd booed the announcement but that was probably more for the fight than the decision itself. Warren gets a title shot with the win.

Show started great but the co-main and main were kind of awful so it’s hard to give this show a recommendation. Maybe check out the prelims.

Thanks for joining me here for Bellator. See you next  time!

  • Bellator 143 weigh-in results: Joe Warren vs. LC Davis, one fighter misses by 18 pounds

At Thursday’s weigh-ins for Friday’s Bellator 143 event, one fighter missed so badly, his fight had to be scrapped.

In the main event, Joe Warren will face LC Davis with both men hitting at 135.75 pounds. The winner will be gearing up for a bantamweight title shot with a victory. In another feature bout, Joey Beltran (186 pounds) continues to look for some consistency against Kendall Grove (185.5).

The story of the weigh-ins was Nick Gonzalez who was set to face Ryan Couture. Instead of coming into the fight at the non-title lightweight limit of 156 pounds, Gonzalez stepped onto the scales at 172.75 pounds, over the welterweight limit. The fight was scrapped, but Couture (155.5) will be paid his show money. It’s likely that Gonzalez will be done with Bellator after this.

  • MMA News – Return of MMA legend on New Year’s Eve

Details still coming in on all of this but here’s what we have so far.

Spike TV signed a one show deal with Sakakibara’s new Pride-style promotion for the North American rights to air their New Year’s Eve show. Fedor Emelianenko has signed with the group and will fight in the main event.

It will air on Spike TV on tape delay, so Prime Time on New Year’s Eve. The show will feature fighters from Bellator but they won’t exclusively be Bellator Fighters.

At this point, this is a one show deal.

  • MMA News: Chael Sonnen announces Josh Barnett Metamoris match, opinions on Holly Holm, Anderson Silva PED woes

The following is from a third party:

Chael Sonnen made his first appearance on Submission Radio this week to promote his new role as a commentator for WSOF. While on the show Chael covered a wide array of subjects in the world of MMA.

    Transcript:

Chael discusses his thoughts on the way Anderson Silva’s defence handled his NSAC PED hearing

“Gentleman, the cover-up is always worse than the crime. What Anderson Silva did – this is my mortal enemy. I hate this guy, okay? I still give him a full pass. I cannot look at what he did as an objective person, looking at his leg and go, ‘listen, your leg snapped in two pieces, okay? You owed it to yourself, you owed it to your family to heal that leg, whether you had to go to the free market or the black market, it doesn’t make any difference to me. I’m really impressed that you found something to heal your leg’. Now, he could have then been a good guy about it, he could have come out and said “yeah as a matter of fact, here’s how I did it. So anybody else in my spot, let me walk you through what I did”. That would have been the cool thing to do. But you know, he got scared about it. And those guys don’t understand those tests. They’re pass or fail.

“And everybody that ends up in the hot seat – and I’ve been in that seat. I mean I’m telling you guys, the psychology of somebody that got in the same jam – your first line of defence is to explain how it got in your system. Well how it got there doesn’t make a damn bit of difference. It doesn’t make any difference how it got there. It was either there or it wasn’t, it’s pass or fail. And the commission slapped him on the wrist, but the way he went about it, historically is what would get the book thrown at you. It’s the guys that dig in, it’s the guys that lie about it that always get the worst treatment. The guys that come forward and say, ‘listen you got me. Here’s what happened’. Those are the guys that kind of get the Anderson treatment. So he had the best of both worlds there. He had a great, great fairytale or a story and he didn’t get punished for it. So good for him.”

Chael’s thoughts on Holly Holm and her boxing world champion accolades:

“It’s the only thing that’s holding her back. You need the mandate of a few people. You need the mandate of the bosses, the guys on the second floor at the UFC, you need the mandate of the fans, but you also need the support of the people in the locker-room. You know, the fellow fighters kind of have to step aside for somebody to be the number one contender and go ‘okay yeah, you’re the right person’. Holly is gaining some fan support, and as far as the locker-room goes, we can’t get behind her ’cause she’s not telling the truth, that there is no validity that I’m willing to sign off on – and I’m happy for someone to come in and disagree with me, tell me where I’m wrong. But there is no validity to any of her world championships, let alone some ridiculous claim of being a seventeen-time world champion. I mean guys, I can go open the door to my garage right now, invite all comers,  and then put a belt around whoever wins and call it the ‘world championship’. And I mean that kind of stuff happens all the time. You see it in arm wrestling.

There’s a world championship for some game called ‘cornholing’, which is like some Midwest version of horseshoes. There’s world championships for thumb wrestling, and there’s no validity to this stuff. There’s no validity to her being a seventeen-time world champion, and I don’t believe as an analyst that there’s any validity to any, zero of her championships. I don’t know one tournament that she ever entered where the entire planet was welcome to enter, and they whittled it down with a competitive architecture known as a bracket, and one person was left standing. I don’t know of it. And I’ve been making this claim for a while, wanting somebody to disagree with me, wanting Holly to disagree with me or one of her coaches to come out and go, ‘Chael you don’t know what you’re talking about’. It’s never happened. She’s got the thumb-wrestling world championship from some dude’s garage. That’s just the reality. I do think she’s a skilled fighter, I think she’s a good boxer. I don’t know if that matters. I’m 38 years old, I’ve never met a female boxer. Not one. I’ve travelled the world, I’ve seen damn near every continent in every country, I’ve been in every state in America, I’ve never reached across a table and shaken hands with a women that turned out she was a boxer. So are you the best boxer in the world for females? Maybe? Does that mean you beat about three people? Yeah it does.

And I’m not discrediting her, I’m discrediting boxing. Boxing is a dying breed, man. People ask me this about Floyd Mayweather all the time. Is he the greatest boxer ever? He’s certainly the best of this time, and he’s certainly a fantastic athlete and he should get a lot more credit than he does, but nobody boxes, guys. The same way I said I’ve never met a girl that boxes. I was 28 years old when I met my first boxer. Clayton Hires was the first man I’ve ever met who had been in the ring and competed in boxing, not one of these liars that goes down to the gym and jumps rope for three minutes and then goes and gets some water. I’m talking about a guy that gets in the ring on a Saturday night and boxes another man. I was 28 years old when I met my first one of those. The sport doesn’t exist. So who cares if you’re the best at it.”

If Chael thinks Fedor is going to be able to compete with the elite Heavyweights in the UFC

“No, Fedor is terrible. And Fedor is a very nice guy. I had the pleasure to meet him twice. The first time, I was in line with him at a Starbucks in a hotel in Los Angeles, and he just blended in. He was just a chubby bald guy, with a nerdy sweater, waiting for his latte like everybody else. And I thought, what a nice guy.”

“The reality on Fedor is, if you’re not fighting in a commissioned fight, you’re not fighting in a real fight. It has to be a sanctioned commission fight. This comes right back what we were talking about with Holly and her quadrillion boxing championships. If there’s no sanctioning and there’s no credibility and architecture, it doesn’t count. So everything he did in Japan with a referee wearing an earpiece gets thrown out. You gotta come to the States where there’s an official weigh-in, where there’s a regulatory body, and where there’s clearer defined rules, with clearer defined judging. He did that. He did that six times and he went 3-3. That’s not exactly an impressive record for a guy that we all keep having to hear is ‘the best of all time’.

Now God bless him, I love a guy that can come back, but I can tell you first hand, you don’t get better not doing something. Fedor got destroyed by guys who are now getting destroyed. Fedor got destroyed by Bigfoot Silva, who by my last count has fought – I believe Frank Mir knocked him out in 18 seconds, I suppose I’d have to re-watch that – but the point is that it’s ridiculous. I think it will sell once. I know that I’ll tune in, I know that the UFC is going to greatly overpay for him, and good for Fedor, man. I think he did everything right, and he is a nice guy. You know, this isn’t my goal to come out and bash a guy, but look, if a guy’s terrible a guy’s terrible. He’s 3-3 in the States, that means he’s 3-3.”

On if Chael thinks Fedor has a better shot in the UFC because fighters no longer use TRT

“Yeah, and I’ll let you be the first to actually get your vernacular right; there’s no such thing as TRT. It’s just ‘T’. It is just Testosterone. You’ll never go buy a bottle of something that says ‘TRT’ on it, but you can get the first letter, you get the ‘T’ down. So I can tell you, and again, you’re talking to a guy that used it. So I mean, let me tell you first hand, it makes a difference, it helps, it is a performance enhancer. If I thought it was going to de-hance me, I never would have taken it. So yes that matters, but not as much as a lot of people think. And the field was pretty level in my experience with the testosterone era. I was one of the few guys that came out and did it right, publicity said I was on it, and went and got the exemptions.

When I did that, I had no idea there was going to be a backlash. I had no idea that people were going to say ‘man, that’s a loophole’, or anything else I dealt with. And when that happened, everybody else just said ‘you know what, I’m gonna do this too but I’m not going to disclose it. I’m not going to do what Chael did and make myself subject to public ridicule’. And when that happened, that’s when guys started getting in trouble. So the guys you’re talking about that were taking the testosterone and admitted it, the only difference between them and their opponents for the most part, is they admitted it.”

Chael is asked if he can reveal his next opponent and announces he’ll be fighting Josh Barnett at the next Metamoris

I have a match coming up at the very end of October, might even be November 1st, I have to look.”

    “His name is Josh Barnett.”

“I’ll even give you gentleman a prediction….Sonnen wins. I’m going to take his (Josh Barnett’s) fat ass down and he will never get up. And let him know I said that.”

“I’m going to take Josh down and then I’m going to whisper in his ear ‘welcome to the next 20 minutes of your life’.”

  • Invicta FC 14 live results: Tonya Evinger vs Pannie Kianzid

    By Paul Fontaine, for WrestlingObserver.com

Welcome to our live coverage of Invicta FC 14 on UFC Fight Pass, from Kansas City, MO. The ten fight card is headlined by Bantamweight Champion Tonya Evinger facing Pannie Kianzad in a non-title fight after Kianzad missed weight. The show also features former UFC Fighter Roxeanne Modafferi and unbeaten Strawweight prospect DeAnna Bennett. Coverage of the 10 fight cards begins at 8 pm eastern.

Lightweights Rach Wiley (0-0) vs Felicia Spencer (0-0)

Spencer was out to “Fat Bottomed Girls” by Queen. In the heaviest weight division in Women’s MMA. I thought the Undertaker was coming out next  but it was Wiley, to “Gonna Cut You Down” by Johnny Cash. Maybe she’s in James Storm’s Revolution. Is that still a thing?

Joe Martinez is the ring announcer and we’ve got fights! Mike Englund and his “God Bless You” to the fighters is the ref. Spencer got an early takedown and laid in some brutal ground and pound, creating a huge hemotoma on Wiley. She was just relentless with punches and elbows, basically little sistering her from side control. Wiley had nothing from the bottom and the ref finally stepped in to stop  it with just over a minute left.

WINNER: FELICIA SPENCER (1-0) by TKO

Flyweights Aspen Ladd (1-0) vs Amanda Bobby Cooper (1-0)

Cooper out to “Takin’ Care of Business” by BTO. They definitely have UFC beat in terms of walkout music. Don’t recognize Ladd’s music, sounds like Ravii Shankar or something. Ladd looks really nervous. Martinez introduces the ref as Juan Grande (Big John McCarthy).

Ladd got a takedown 3 minutes in after a back and forth clinch battle for the first part of the round. Cooper went for an armbar from the bottom with a minute left but Ladd escaped. Cooper had a couple sweep attempts but Ladd maintained control and got in some ground and pound to probably take the round. 10-9 Ladd

Ladd with an early takedown and got into side control 1:00 in. Ladd working for a key lock but doesn’t quite have the right angle. She gave it up after a minute and took Cooper’s back. Ladd with full back mount 3:00 in and working for a rear naked choke. Gives up the choke but keeps landing punches from behind. She got the choke in again at 4:00 after cranking the neck several times and using punches to set it up. Cooper escaped but Ladd ended up in full mount, laying in vicious ground and pound and opening up a cut. Cooper turtled and Ladd with an armbar attempt for the tapout win.

WINNER: ASPEN LADD (2-0) by submission

Strawweights JJ Aldrich (1-1) vs Rosa Acevedo (3-1)

Acevedo with some current music for her walkout “Someone to Lean On” by Major Lazer and DJ Snake. She missed weight so this is officially a catchweight bout. Aldrich out to “Number One” by Nelly. Acevedo is wearing a catsuit, but very different from the one you saw at the G1 Climax. Personally, I enjoyed the NJPW version but each to his own.

Mike Englund is the ref but no blessings from God this time. According to TJ, Acevedo once weighed 215 lbs. Even though she missed weight, Acevedo looks to giving up a lot of size here. Aldrich dominated her right from the get-go with the finishing blow being a knee to the midsection and then she finished off with some ground and pound when Acevedo went down.

WINNER: JJ ALDRICH (2-1) by TKO

Atomweights Jinh Yu Frey (3-1) vs Liz McCarthy (2-2)

Don’t recognize McCarthy’s walkout music. Some good female hard rock song. Frey’s song is a mystery to me as well, generic hip-hop. Love the pace of these shows, as one hour in, we’re already on our fourth fight. These ladies do get a God Bless You from Englund. I think he’s showing some favoritism or something (not really).

Gotta say that although it sucks for the fighters, I much prefer the UFC uniforms to the ad-filled unis on the other shows, as we have here. Frey gets a takedown 1:30 in and briefly gets side control but McCarthy works back to her feet. McCarthy was cut on the nose during the ground exchange. Both ladies landed some nice shots standing. Frey with a nice punch combo in the last 30 seconds to cinch the round. 10-9 Frey

Frey with a takedown 1:45 in. McCarthy up quickly. Standup again is very even. Frey with a nice punch combo that rocks McCarthy at 3:45. Much closer round, probably 10-9 Frey for the takedown.

Very even to start again. McCarthy gets the first sustained advantage about halfway through, backing up Frey to the cage with a punch combo. Frey does land a hard punch to escape the cage clinch. McCarthy controlling the pace and in a close round, that could take it for her. McCarthy rocked Frey with a kick to the body and Frey tried for a takedown but couldn’t get it. Clinch on the cage but Frey escaped with a hard elbow to the head. 10-9 McCarthy so probably Frey’s fight but all depends how they scored round 2.

    WINNER – JINH YU FREY (4-1) by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28 x 2)

Strawweights Jamie Moyle (3-0) vs Sharon Jacobson (3-1)

Jacobson is a Sargent in the U.S. Army fighting for the 2nd time in Invicta. Don’t recognize her walkout tune. Another rap song. Moyle is a product of Syndicate MMA. Her song is some sort of disco remix. Not a bad tune. These ladies get a “God Bless You” as well. Starting to think I might’ve just missed it the one time.

Jacobson with a wrestling background doing a lot of clinching and going for takedowns but Moyle defending well early on. Moyle rocked Jacobson with a kick 2:15 in. Jacobson with a nice punch combo at 4:00, backing up Moyle to the cage. Jacobson starting to find her range in the last minute, doing a lot of damage. 10-9 Jacobson

Jacobson finally got her takedown 1:15 in but stood up right away. Moyle stayed on her back for a bit but then followed her up. Jacobson landed a nice spinning elbow but Moyle followed up with a hard right that rocked Jacobson. Moyle starting to swarm at 2:15 and Jacobson recovered. Jacobson definitely slowed down by that exchange though. Jacobson with a nice punch combo at 3:15 that backs up Moyle. Both ladies firing punches at 3:30. Jacobson landing a lot of  body punches from the clinch. Jacobson got a flash takedown at 4:30. Moyle bleeding from the nose as the round ends. 10-9 Jacobson

Moyle is all cut up and bruised in the face as she comes out for Round 3. Moyle rocked Jacobson with a body kick at 1:00. Jacobson with a takedown and dropped Moyle on her head right after that. Jacobson again stood up right away and Moyle followed. Jacobson landed a hard elbow to the face 2:00 in. Jacobson with another takedown at 2:45 and follows up with ground and pound this time. Moyle stood up at 3:15 and Moyle followed. Jacobson with a flurry of punches to the body at 3:45 and follows up with a nice combo of punches to the head. Moyle lands a couple hard knees to the body at 4:15. 10-9 Jacobson

    WINNER – SHARON JACOBSON (4-1) by unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27 x 2)

Miesha Tate was interviewed backstage. She didn’t have much to say. Was asked about Amanda Nunes and she said that nothing’s been signed as of yet.

Featherweights Cindy Dandois (5-2) vs Megan Anderson (4-1)

These ladies are competing for the “right” to be the next sacrificial lamb for Cris Cyborg , it would seem. Anderson is an Australian making her Invicta debut. Walkout song is Revolution by Diplo, some dubstep for the KC folks. Dandois’ choice is Let it Go from the Frozen soundtrack. She looks a lot like Brigitte Nielson from Rocky 4. She’s returning to Featherweight after losing to Tonya Evinger at 135 in her last fight.

Big John is the ref for this one. Professional commentator Julie Kedzie was still humming “Let it Go” when the match was starting. Dandois gets an early takedown. Dandois into mount at 1:30. Anderson gave up her back and Dandois went for an armbar at 2:30. Anderson escaped and ended up in top position. Dandois with a triangle from the bottom though. Dandois swept to mount and gave up the triangle but laying in ground and pound at 3:30. Anderson used the cage to escape and got to her feet. Anderson with a takedown but stood right back up and got separation. 10-9 Dandois, almost a 10-8

Anderson advancing and get  the first damage 1:00 in with a body punch. Anderson with a takedown at 1:15, might’ve even been Dandois pulling guard. Dandois with a triangle from the bottom. Anderson landing body punches while in the triangle and works it to the cage after starting in the middle. Anderson finally tapped at 2:30

WINNER – CINDY DANDOIS (6-2) by submission

Flyweights Rachael Ostovich (2-1) vs Andrea Lee (2-1)

Ostovich out to the Rocky Theme, while wearing a Wonder Woman uniform. Don’t recognize Lee’s music, sounds like AC/DC. Big John gets the dukes once again.

Lee controlling things for the first couple minutes. Ostovich does get a Superwoman punch in, getting Mauro Ranallo a shout-out after he coined the phrase on one of the earlier shows. Lee knocked her down with punches and took her back with a choke but Ostovich fought out and to her feet at 3:30. Ostovich nailed a nice spinning backfist at 4:30. Lee rocked her with a body kick that crumpled her to the mat and finished the round with ground and pound. Lee with a choke right as the round was ending. 10-8 Lee

Ostovich with a nice spinning backfist 45 seconds in. Doesn’t follow up though. Lee looking very crisp on the standup, completely controlling the cage. Nice punch combo at 2:15 from Lee. Ostovich lands another spinning backfist. Lee with a knockdown at 3:00 and follows her to the ground, taking Ostovich’s back. Lee landing punches from behind. Lee also landing hard knees to the legs and butt. Ostovich to her feet and eats a hard knee to the gut. Lee all over her in the last minute. Lee lands a high kick to the head and gets another takedown at 4:45. Lee finishes the round with ground and pound. Another 10-8

Ostovich gets a takedown after catching a kick 30 seconds in. Lee to her feet quickly. Ostovich was cut on the right side of her head by the kick though and she’s bleeding hard. Lee landing hard knees to the body and head and Ostovich down. Ostovich briefly to her feet but right down again. Somehow Ostovich ended up on top though. Lee easily to her feet though. Ostovich is bleeding all over the place and stays on her back and Lee goes into her guard. Lee landing hard elbows to the body and has Ostovich folded up so she can’t defend. Lee with full back mount 3:00 in. Lee continuing to land punches from behind. Lee with a hard and arm choke but gives it up quickly. Ostovich to her feet right before the round ends but brought back down again by Lee. 10-9 Lee
Lee actually verbally submitted with one second left.

WINNER – ANDREA LEE (3-1) by submission

Flyweights Roxanne Modafferi (17-12) vs Mariana Morais (9-2)

Morais is making her Invicta and US debut after fighting her whole career in South America. Don’t recognize her walk-out song but it sounds like it could be Brazilian. Modafferi is, of course, the reason we’re all watching. Don’t recognize her song either but it’s an upbeat dance song and she comes out all excited waving her hands in the air. She’s another Syndicate MMA fighter. Big John is the ref once again.

Morais is just 19 years old. If you add up Modafferi and Evinger’s fights, I think they’ve got more combined fights than everyone else on the card put together. Modafferi gets a takedown 1:00 in and quickly into full mount. Modafferi landing punches and elbows from the top but Morais manages to work her to half-guard. Modafferi into side control at 2:30. Morais got her back to half-guard but Modafferi completely in control and Morais doing nothing from the bottom. Modafferi with elbows to the body but Morais sweeps to top position at 4:45. Modafferi trying for a guillotine from the bottom right before the round ends. 10-9 Modafferi

Nice punch exchange early with both ladies landing a lot of shots. Modafferi landing a lot of leg kick/punch combinations but not doing much damage. Modafferi with a judo throw takedown and into quarter mount right away. Modafferi landing a lot of punches to the face, which allows her to take full mount. Modafferi mixing in elbows with the punches. Morais blocking a lot of them and the ones that are landing aren’t doing a lot of damage but they are piling up. Morais gives up her back at 4:00 and Modafferi continuing with the punches. Modafferi landing a ton of elbows to the head and flips Morais back into full mount. Bell saves Morais, 10-8 Modafferi

Morais with a guillotine 30 seconds in and pulled guard. Modafferi pops out 1:00 in and in top position. Modafferi into side control at 3:15. Modafferi landing some punches from the top but not nearly as active as the first two rounds. Modafferi into full mount at 4:00 and landing a ton of punches and elbows. Morais turtling and Big John very close to stopping it. He finally did with 20 seconds left. Great performance from Modafferi, maybe the best I’ve ever seen her.

WINNER – ROXANNE MODAFFERI (18-12) by TKO

Our very own Filthy Tom Lawlor was there to congratulate Roxy afterward. She put over her fans for dressing up like Mortal Kombat characters and said how badly she wanted to finish her opponent. She also challenged Barb Honchak for a title shot and they’d be fools not to give it to her.

Strawweights Katja Kankaanpaa (10-2-1) vs DeAnna Bennett (7-0)

Bennett missed weight as well. Miesha Tate joined the commentary team after cornering Cindy Dandois to a win earlier. She put over Roxy’s win and also mentioned that Bennett has a win over UFC Bantamweight contender Julianna Pena. Don’t recognize either of the walkout songs. Kankaanpaa (who will herefore be known as KK in this report) has ditched the bunny ears that she wore for previous fights, which sadly is not pointed out by the commentators.

Mike Englund passes on God’s blessings to start the fight. Bennett far bigger but has trouble making the 115 lb weight limit. She’s probably too small for 135 so it’ll be tough for her to make a move to UFC. First half of the round is back and forth with neither lady doing much damage. Bennett with an arm-in guillotine at 4:00 and brings it to the ground but KK quickly out. KK trying to take Bennett’s back but Bennett to her feet and KK follows. KK trying for a Kimura roll with 15 seconds left. Close round but probably 10-9 Bennett

Both ladies tried for early takedowns but unsuccessful. KK with a takedown 2:00 in but Bennett with a guillotine attempt from the bottom. Gives it up but gets to her feet at 2:30. Bennett with a takedown at 3:15 and KK trying for a guillotine but gives it up quickly. KK with a sweep but Bennett trying for an armbar. KK escapes and ends up on top. Bennett to her feet at 4:00 but KK takes her down again. KK working for a Kimura but Bennett to her feet. Bennett with a standing guillotine at 4:30 and pulls guard. It’s tight but not much time left. KK punching the body as the round ends. Very close but 10-9 Bennett I think

Bennett pulls guard early trying for a guillotine but KK escapes and in top position. Both ladies to their feet but KK in control and brings her down. KK with a head and arm choke from the top at 1:15. Bennett gives up her back but KK swings her back around. Bennett escapes the choke but KK with a body triangle. KK into top position but in Bennett’s guard. KK into side control at 2:45. Tate, in talking about KK, says she’s probably down in the scorecards but we’ll see how this round goes. If she’s down in the scorecards, she needs a finish to win, Miesha. Bennett landing elbows to the body from the bottom but KK fully in control. Bennett works her back to half-guard and tries to get to her feet but KK takes her back and going for a head and arm choke again. She gives it up right before the end of the fight. 10-9 KK but Bennett wins on my scorecard. Could easily be KK’s though as the first two were close. Would be interested to see this under the Velten scoring system because I think KK won the fight overall but under the scoring system, I have Bennett winning.

WINNER – DEANNA BENNETT (8-0) by unanimous decision on scores of 29-28 x 3

All the commentators going off about the judging but with this scoring system, Bennett won the fight. This was not bad judging but a bad scoring system.

Main Event: Tonya Evinger (16-6) vs Pannie Kianzad (8-0)

Kianzad out to 99 Problems by Hugo. Very different from the Jay-Z version but cool. Evinger with “In the Air Tonight” by Phil Collins, as always. Lots of people on twitter complaining about that last decision but that was definitely the scoring system, not the judging, to blame there. Kianzad missed weight so this is a 3 round non-title fight.

Big John gets the main event reffing duties here. Tate is still on commentary. Maybe she’ll challenge Evinger for a title shot after the fight. Evinger with a takedown 1:00 in. Kianzad to her feet quickly. Kianzad working for a takedown but Evinger uses the momentum to end up on top and quickly into side control, landing hard elbows to the head and body. Kianzad gives up her back and Evinger with a choke at 2:45. Kianzad bleeding from the nose and the choke is in tight. Kianzad escapes but in a lot of trouble.  Kianzad having problems because of the half-shirt she’s wearing obscuring her vision. She does work to top position but Evinger working for an armbar from the bottom. Evinger landing hard elbows to the body as the round ends. 10-8 Evinger

Evinger dropped Kianzad with a knee to the body right away. Evinger to the ground and tried to take her back. Kianzad briefly into top position but Evinger quickly takes it. Kianzad bleeding from the nose again. Evinger all over her back, hitting her with punches to the body and head. Kianzad works her to half guard at 2:30 but still taking a lot of damage. Evinger with back mount and working for a head and arm choke at 3:00. Evinger pouring in the punches from behind. Kianzad flips her around to the top but Evinger not letting up and Big John stops it.

WINNER – TONYA EVINGER (17-6) by TKO

Miesha Tate called for a catchweight fight under the Invicta banner between Evinger and Cyborg. I like Tonya’s chances better than Dandois’. Overall a fun night of fights after a lacklustre show in Vegas. Thanks for joining me tonight!

  • UFC 191 Picks and Betting Game From The Secret Psychic Spy~!

By the Secret Psychic Spy (secretpsychicspy@yahoo.com)

    Starting Bankroll: $1,500

    Current Bankroll: $751.66

    Last week (Aug 22): 3/5 Overall 78/139 (56%)

Small profit again last time out at UFC Saskatoon as I try to inch my way back to even. UFC is back on PPV this weekend with UFC 191. Playing it safe this weekend with all favorites so let’s take a look at which five picks I think have the best value on this show.

    Pick 1 – Jan Blachowicz (18-4) -140 over Corey Anderson (5-1) I’m betting $100 to win $71.43

Blachowicz has the experience edge, having fought for years against top-level competition despite just making his UFC debut last year. His only UFC loss was to top 15 contender Jimi Manuwa. Anderson is coming off the first loss of his career, to Gian Villante (who was just knocked out by this site’s own Tom Lawlor). Go with experience here and Blachowicz.

    Pick 2 – Nazarene Malegarie (30-3) -145 over Joaquin Silva (7-0) I’m betting $100 to win $68.97

Malegarie has been out of the spotlight for years, with his last high profile fight coming in 2012 for Bellator, where he lost to Rad Martinez. Since then he’s rung up 8 straight wins in South America and will make his UFC debut here after 8 years and 33 pro fights. Silva is also making his debut and is unbeaten with all finishes. Silva’s wins have been far less highly profiled and again, go with experience here.

    Pick 3 – Clay Collard (14-6) -135 over Tiago Trator (19-5-1) I’m betting $100 to win $74.07

Collard’s had a rough start to his UFC career, going 1-2 but I think he’s prime here to turn that around and get back on the winning track. He was brought into UFC with a lot of hype and he was really impressive for Showdown fights. Trator is also coming off of a loss and it was a devastating KO at the hands of Mike de la Torre. I like Collard here.

    Pick 4 – Andrei Arlovski (24-10) -155 over Frank Mir (18-9) I’m betting $100 to win $64.52

This is the real main event of tonight’s show for a lot of people. Arlovski’s been on a roll since returning to UFC with 3 straight wins. Mir has two straight wins of his own after a long losing streak. Arlovski has a title shot starting him in the face if he can get past Mir and I really think he will. I don’t think Mir will be able to withstand his power after a long career in the Octagon. One thing I’m virtually certain of is this fight will end quickly.

    Pick 5 – Jessica Andrade (13-4) -210 vs Raquel Pennington (5-5) I’m betting $100 to win $47.62

This is the second fight for these two, with Andrade having won a split decision back in March of last year. Since then Andrade has won 2 of 3, including a decision over Sarah Moras in her last fight. Pennington has fought just twice with her most recent being a loss to Holly Holm in the co-main event of UFC 184. Andrade is more experienced and has fought a higher quality of fighters in her career. I think she marches up the contender list with a second straight win over Pennington here.

All told, I’m betting $500 with a chance to win $326.60

    On with the betting game.

2015 Betting Game: Secret Psychic Spy vs Ryan Frederick

    Current Standings:

Ryan Frederick: $1,082.53 (Picked Oliveira, Watson, Aguilar, Eye, Leites, Lawler, Gordon, Hein, Alvarez, Ortega, Noons, Browne, Magny, Matthews)

Secret Psychic Spy: $1,470.18 (Picked Stout, Salazar, Bruno, Duke, Rivera, Samman, Bosse, Amirkhani, Henderson, Breese, Pyle, Wee, Andrews)

We’re both on a losing streak with both of our guys losing quickly in Saskatoon. I will turn things around with my pick this week, Andrei Arlovski as he’ll make quick work of Frank Mir and allow me to retain my lead.

    Ryan’s pick:

I’m going John Lineker -135 over Francisco Rivera Jr

Good luck, enjoy the fights and remember, don’t bet more than you can afford to lose and try to have fun with it!

  • Bellator MMA 141 Live coverage and results: Melvin Guillard vs Brandon Girtz

    by Paul Fontaine, WrestlingObserver.com

Live coverage of Bellator 141 kicks off at 9 pm eastern/8 Central with 4 fights. Melvin Guillard makes his promotional debut. Two lightweight mainstays in Bellator square off as Patricky Pitbull goes against Saad Awad and two fights featuring journeymen Heavyweights kick off the festivities. Join us her for bell to bell coverage of all 4 fights (and maybe some prelims if there’s time).

Late change – Marloes Coenen vs  Arlene Blencowe replaces one of the Heavyweight fights on the main card. Good move as Coenen is probably the second most  recognizable name on the entire card, having twice fought Chris Cyborg and being a former holder of the title that Ronda Rousey currently holds.

The substitution was made due to an injury to Lorenzo Hood, so his fight with Raphael Butler is off

Women’s Featherweights Marloes Coenen (22-6) vs Arlene Blencowe (6-4)

Coenen gets a takedown 30 seconds in and right into side control. Coenen transitions to the back and working for a choke. Coenen landing hard punches to the head from behind. Coenen lies on her back, while still in control of Blencowe’s at 3:15. Blencowe tries to escape but Coenen still in control. Coenen has to give up the body triangle though. Coenen just holds Blencowe down for the rest of the round for an easy 10-9. Almost a 10-8 really cause Blencowe did almost nothing.

Both ladies punching to start Round 2. Blencowe maybe getting the better of it. Coenen takes her back standing and brings her down at 1:00. Blencowe escapes and too her feet at 1:30 and forces Coenen to stand as well. Coenen tries for a trip takedown but Blencowe ends  up on top. Blencowe to her feet at 2:15 and Coenen has to follow again. Blencowe landing a lot of punches on the feet but Coenen takes her down at 2:45 and right into side control. Coenen with an armbar at 3:15. Blencowe turns to escape and on top but Coenen gets the arm again and the quick tap.

WINNER: MARLOES COENEN (23-6) by submission (armbar)

A nice preview piece of Justin Wren, who fought on TUF 10, including a KO of Wes Sims. He took 5 years off to do humanitarian work in the Congo. He looks like a gigantic version of Daniel Bryan and sounds a bit like him as well.

Heavyweights Justin Wren (10-3) vs Josh Burns (8-8)

You may remember Burns as one of Lashley’s sacrificial Bellator lambs. He’s 0-5 in Bellator, being finished every time so this is clearly a showcase fight for Wren. Jason Herzog gets the reffing duties for this Heavyweight BATTLE.

They’re both just throwing bombs to start. Wren clinches up and lands a couple knees to the body. Wren landing punches as well as he’s got Burns backed up to the cage. Ref breaks up the clinch at 2:00. Burns bleeding a bit from under his right eye. Hard punch exchange at 3:00 and then Wren backs Burns up to the cage again, landing knees to the body and head. Wren also landing punches to the body. Burns pushes him away from the cage but Wren lands a nice punch/knee combo. Wren rocks Burns with a punch at 4:30. 10-9 Wren

Wren backs up Burns to the cage early but Burns takes control. Wren tries for a takedown but Burns fights him off and they’re in the centre again. Strikes were 21-20 in the first round for Wren. Hard punch exchange at 2:00 and Wren bleeding from the nose. Burns starting to control the pace. Wren rocks Burns with a couple of knees and backs him up into the cage. Wren landing a ton of knees to  the body and the head and following up with punches. Burns punches out of it. Burns is all bloodied up on his face. Wren with a nice punch combo at 4:00 and backs him up to the cage again. More hard knees from Wren. Separation with 15 seconds left. 10-9 Wren

Doctor took a long look at the damage on Burns’ face but let him continue. Kicks landed were 16-1 for Wren in Round 2. Burns pushing the pace to start the round though. Clinch on the cage at 1:30 with Burns in control. Nothing happening. Ref separates them quickly. Wren with a nice punch/kick combo at 2:15. Wren clinches up again at 2:15 and lands some knees to the head. Burns gets control and lands a series of punches to the head. Wren with some elbows from the clinch and Burns gets separation. Wren with a series of punches and kicks standing. Wren just teeing off at 4:15 but Burns staying on his feet. Wren just picking him off. Burns with a nice punch combo just before the right ends. They embrace at the end. 10-9 Wren

    WINNER: JUSTIN WREN (11-3) by unanimous decision (30-27; 30-26 x 2)

Wren cut a great promo to his friends in the Congo, in another language. Great story, really likeable guy. And it’s promo time for the Dynamite show on September 19th. Jimmy Smith and Scott Coker do their very best Dana and Rogan impressions, announcing the brackets  for the 205 lb tourney. King Mo vs Linton Vassell and Emanuel Newton vs Phil Davis (fight guaranteed to put me to sleep) with the winners facing off the same night for a title shot.

They made mention of the fan fest that was promoted on the site today. Smith is fine but Coker is terrible in these things. They also announced another “tentpole event”, using that phrase. Pitbull-Strauss 3, Will Brooks defending the lightweight title against…..(Coker forgot his name, but Smith helped him out by saying) Marcin Held. Also Michael Chandler and Bobby Lashley in featured fights.
Lightweights Patricky Pitbull (13-6) vs Saad Awad (18-6)

Ox Baker/Mike Beltran is your referee. They do the main event ref instructions for this one for some reason. Very tentative to start even though the pre-fight video package showed a lot of hatred between the two of them. Grande mentions that the lightweight division is getting deep with the additions of Melvin Guillard, Josh Thomson and JOSH KOSCHECK. He said it. Pitbull with the slight advantage on the feet but almost nothing happening through 2:45. Pitbull with a flash takedown at 3:30 but Awad right back up. They trade leg kicks at 4:30 and then Pitbull hit a flying knee in the most action of the fight so far. 10-9 Pitbull

A little more action to  start Round 2. Pitbull the aggressor. Nice punch exchange at 1:30. Pitbull with a takedown at 1:45. Not much happening on the ground. Pitbull with some light punches to the body and then stands up at 3:00. Awad follows. Awad bleeding around his right eye. Nice punch combo from Awad at 4:00. Pitbull answers back with a punch combo of his own. Pitbull continuing to advance. Very close round. 10-9 Pitbull

Round 3 started off really slow again with neither guy taking control or landing much. Pitbull with the first bit of offence around 1:45 in, but Awad works him back to the center of the cage. Nice punch exchange at 2:15. Pitbull seems to be doing more damage. Awad bleeding from the nose at 3:15. Pitbull starting to press the action at 4:00. Ptibull with a nice punch combo with 15 seconds left and Awad gets a late takedown. Another close round. 10-9 Pitbull

WINNER – PATRICKY PITBULL (14-6) by unanimous decision on scores of 30-27 x 3

Main Event – Melvin Guillard (33-14-2) vs Brandon Girtz (12-4)

Big John is out for the first time as ref after judging a couple of the undercard fights. Girtz rocks Guillard with a punch combo and then takes his back standing early. Girtz with a power takedown 45 seconds in. Girtz into side control and landing knees to the body. Guillard cut and bleeding around his left eye. Hard knees to the body by Girtz at 3:00. Girtz doing just enough to avoid a standup. 10-8 Girtz. Not like he was close  to finishing but Guillard did absolutely nothing

Guillard landed just 2 strikes in that round to 37 for Girtz. Guillard controlling the cage to start round 2 though. Girtz with a nice punch combo early. Guillard answers back with some punches of his own, his biggest offence of the fight so far. Girtz with a power takedown at 1:30 but Guillard  right up. Girtz takes him down again and trying for an armbar. Guillard escapes and to his feet, landing a nice punch combo on the way up. Guillard continuing to advance but eating punches from Girtz anyway. Nice punch combo from Guillard at 3:15. Guillard rocks Girtz with a hard right at 4:15 but Girtz gets a takedown right after. Guillard quickly to his feet. This round is still close. Guillard with a nice punch/kick combo. Nice punch exchange right before the bell. 10-9 Guillard but could’ve gone either way.

Girtz with an early takedown. Ground strikes are 33-2 for Girtz through 2 rounds. Girtz working for a head and arm choke. Gives that up and looking for a Kimura but Guillard fights that off with a couple of elbows from the bottom. Guillard landing a lot of hard elbows to the head from the bottom. Ref stands them up at 3:30. Guillard advancing on the standup and stalking him. Guillard lands a flying knee and follows up with hard knees and punches to the head. Girtz is in big trouble. Guillard with another knee/punch combo at 4:15. Girtz with a takedown at 4:30. This is going to be interesting. Guillard landing elbows from the bottom and Girtz just trying to hold him. 10-9 Guillard and I’ve got it as a 28-28 draw.

WINNER – BRANDON GIRTZ (13-4) by split decision on scores of 29-27, 28-29 and 29-27
