  • TNA Impact Wrestling July 22 TV results & recap: Jeff Hardy vs. Bobby Roode, Spud vs. Eric Young

    By Jeremy Peeples, WrestlingObserver.com

Last week, Bully Ray debuted as The Law, Tigre Uno retained the X Title with a botched Phoenix splash, while Brooke won the Knockouts title with a botched X Factor. Drew Galloway won a battle royal to get a title shot at EC3. Thanks to Eli Drake turning on Drew and hitting him with his crutch, EC3 retained his title.

Dixie comes down to the ring for a very important announcement – the Hall of Fame induction of Jeff Jarrett. Jeff gets an epic video package spanning his Memphis days with footage, some WWF photos with Owen, and some hilarious hyperbole. Pope congratulates Jeff Jarrett for his induction while Josh talks about him being the King of the Mountain, and we’ll see that tonight as they air the Slammiversary match. Spud faces EY in a chain match, while Roode faces Matt in a number one contender’s match. Tigre Uno cuts a promo on Donald Trump and to start the show off, we get Magnus vs. Bram in a street fight for some reason.

Magnus vs. Bram – Street Fight

Josh talks about their past, but we don’t know why this match is happening now. They brawl on the floor Magnus gets a superplex in this street fight and boots him in the face. Josh runs through Bram’s many nicknames while he gets some trash cans and hits a cookie sheet shot. Bram, the most dangerous man in TNA according to Josh, gets a trash can on his head and gets hit with a chair before falling like a tree to the mat. Magnus gets his super-slick flying elbow for 2. Magnus gets the spine shaker/Mark of Excellence for 2. Bram gets a low blow and a modified schoolboy for the win. Storm comes down with a bull rope and hits Magnus with the cow bell. Storm says we’ll know who his partner is, and he gets another kick in. We get a replay of Eli Drake attacking Drew, and we’ll hear his explanation next. What explanation does he really need? “This team I was only in for a few weeks broke up, so I had no use for this guy”.

Drew Galloway and Eli Drake Have a Brief, Friendly Chat

Eli comes out and Josh is offended by what he did, so Josh is a face for this segment. Eli comes out to an entrance video of himself turning to the side slightly and mocks the fans for being dummies. Eli says that “E-li Drake is a creator of circumstance” and he made a circumstance that benefited him. Drake mocks #standup and says they can all sit down. He hasn’t been given much in TNA so far, but he’s making the most of this chance and is shining brightly here. Drew says that he brought Drake into the Rising and people think he’s older than he is because he’s been around for 15 years, and he in fact has a torn shoulder now – which at least explains him looking like hell recently.

Drew says he’ll make Eli famous. Drew is now stealing likes from Big Evil Taker, and is trying to make Eli famous. On Destination America!? They fight and Eli low blows him and they fight for a bit. Okay then. Taryn wants to call Gail out, but only inside the steel cage. Why does she want a cage? Logically, she should want a one on three trap for Gail in there, but Josh always points out how easy it is to get into TNA’s cage, so why bother?

Taryn and Brooke Have a Long, Screechy Chat

Josh runs down the Taryn-Gail feud and Josh throws to Christy plugging Pit Wars, but Taryn comes out first and blames Christy and the fans for her title loss. Taryn says she won’t leave until she gets her title back and she wants Bully to give her a shot and screeches. Brooke comes out and knocks over the dollhouse while saying that the fans are important, not Taryn. Brooke knocks the “doll-hoes” and they have another long exchange of saying annoying things. Brooke lures Taryn to the ramp so Gail can attack the Dolls in the cage. Gail beats them up and Brooke chases Taryn up the ramp. Taryn has a tantrum on the ramp while Gail and Brooke stand tall. The King of the Mountain match from this year’s Slammiversary is next. Josh says that we’ll see the whole thing, so hopefully they go through with that.

King of the Mountain 2015 Match

If you hadn’t heard, Eric Young is a world-class maniac and he’s deranged. Josh compares King of the Mountain to the playoffs and the Super Bowl while explaining the rules. They dub in some new commentary about Jeff joining the TNA Hall of Fame class. Pope talks about KOTM being a cool concept while Josh plugs the GFW TV tapings at the Orleans Arena and they give credit to Bully for putting his PPV main event on free TV. Josh and Pope are bitching and moaning about who can suck up the most and join GFW…on TNA TV. EY beats Jeff and Jeff goes in the box for an ad break.

Pope talks about Hardy vs. Roode and how that one on one match can literally go either way. Pope’s a really smart guy, but it doesn’t quite come across that way on commentary. EY and Roode eat back to back pins, so they’re in the box. Jeff hits the Stroke on Drew, but Matt breaks up the pin despite that just making it harder for him to win. Matt hops around and goes for the Twist, but Jeff gets the Stroke for 2 thanks to Drew breaking it up.

Pope points out that this is a weird move, but then Josh says that preventing pins prevents someone else from being ineligible to hang the title over the ring in the reverse ladder match portion of the match. And to think that some feel this stipulation is convoluted. EY and Roode go to sing the Canadian national anthem, but EY turns on him for a piledriver attempt. Tower of Doom Kyptonite Krunch hits Matt. Jeff didn’t get the pin, so he can’t win the title until he gets a fall. EY, Roode, and Jarrett duke it out for an ad break.

During the ad break, we get a plug of two new TNA DVDs – a new Jeff Hardy DVD called Humanomoly, and The Best of Hulk Hogan, which includes Hulk Hogan’s final match. It was a TNA house show six-man tag, and it can only be seen on this DVD in full, or in HD in the ads unless TNA decides to just put it on Youtube.

Jeff eats a piledriver on the ladder bridge between the ring and the barricade. Drew dives off of the penalty box onto the rest of the pile. Drew goes to put the title up, but Matt Twist of Fates him off the ladder. Jeff gets a super stroke off the ladder to EY and climbs the ladder to win. Josh asks what the future holds for TNA and for Jeff Jarrett while they go to the announce both area and they run down the rest of the card, including a chain match and a table match – because we needed more stips on this random episode of Impact without a theme to it.

    Tigre Uno Challenges Donald Trump

Tigre Uno is put over as a loving father and a lucha legend. One of these statements is true. Uno says that people who come to the U.S. work hard and he invites Donald Trump to the Impact Zone next week. Well, this ate up maybe three minutes and they spent more time hyping it up than the actual special. The Revolution walks backstage to introduce their next member next.

We get a brief recap of the most recent Storm-Mickie issues. The Revolution comes down with Abyss amusingly being called the powerhouse in this group with Khoya. Abyss is moving about as slowly as Taker is now. Storm says that America’s children are lost causes who need guidance, but that his Revolution is all-inclusive and doesn’t hold anyone’s race or language against them. Serena Deeb comes down and she’s put over as someone who knows Mickie better than Magnus. Pope tells the story about them being in OVW today and Mickie mentoring Serena. Serena says that they were like sisters, but Mickie forgot her. Storm says that he’ll stand beside her proudly and they’ll beat and embarrass Magnus and Mickie. If TNA is going to turn into an homage to OVW, could they bring back the Heartbreakers and Mo Green? Rockstar Spud faces Eric Young, who is a world-class maniac and the lunatic unhinged.

Eric Young vs. Rockstar Spud – Chain Match

Eric Young comes out for this chain match. They haven’t explained why EY and Spud have an issue, why a chain is involved in their rivalry, and thus why this needs to be a chain match. Rockstar Spud comes out and gets choked with the chain. Josh says that this will have a pinfall or submission, so it won’t be a “touch the corners” match. Josh insults Spud for trying to run away from this, but Josh mocks him for it and then praises EY for ramming the chain into Spud’s jaw. EY chokes him some more and drags him up to his feet with it. Josh talks about Impact being a trend worldwide thanks to Slammiversary, the King of the Mountain match, Serena, Gail Kim, and Brooke. Spud ducks under EY and lifts the chain into EY’s crotch. Pope says that Spud is Rocky-ing it up. They’re pimping a Hulk Hogan DVD – just use Hulking up. Pope brings up the Valentine vs. Piper chain match, which unlike this one, had a reason for happening. EY piledrives him on the chain and wins.

Bobby Roode vs. Matt Hardy – No. 1 Contender’s Table Match

Josh talks about how Bully named Matt Hardy as the number one man in the top five, while Bobby Roode is number two. Why were these numbers chosen? Matt gets a Side Effect by countering a lariat. Josh talks about how all of this happened due to TNA’s site and/or their Youtube channel – which is apparently now more important than their national TV show. They fight on the floor and Roode suplexes Matt onto the steel steps. Should Matt really be taking bumps like that now? Bobby Roode puts a table on Matt, surfs on it, and then jumps on Matt. Matt comes back and gets a lariat in the corner, but Bobby counters the bulldog into a spinebuster. Matt gets a Twist of Fate while Josh ponders Matt’s options to win. Bobby trips Matt up to send him to the mat. Matt counters a spinebuster and sends Bobby over the top to the floor for the win. Well, this was a match – and a show. Next week, Jeff Jarrett goes into the Hall of Fame, Mickie has her final match in TNA and Jeff Hardy returns. That seems like something you’d want to bring up a time or two.

  • MVP leaves TNA

On social media Saturday, MVP said that the BDC is no more in TNA and bid farewell to the organization.

    https://twitter.com/The305MVP/status/622545341347266561

The timing comes right after all of the BDC footage that was taped, but not yet aired on Impact, had to be pulled due to legal threats from Lucha Underground due to usage of Hernandez, who Lucha Underground was in the process of releasing, but hadn’t done so before he had already appeared on TNA in what would have been a violation of his non-compete even if the release was executed.

  • TNA News: Kurt Angle undergoes emergency second surgery

    By Dave Meltzer, WrestlingObserver.com

Former TNA and WWE Champion Kurt Angle underwent emergency surgery Wednesday due to complications that were a follow-up from his surgery last week.

According to his wife, Giovanni, on Twitter, last week’s surgery resulted in a large buildup of fluid on his spinal cord, a condition that could have been fatal, and he underwent emergency surgery yesterday.

The surgery went well and he is expected to make a full recovery. Mrs. Angle noted that Kurt would not be able to travel to London where he was scheduled to appear at the Comic Con.

  • TNA Impact Wrestling July 15 TV results & recap: EC3 defends World title on a championship-laden night

    By Jeremy Peeples, WrestlingObserver.com

Last week, TNA presented a largely dreadful program under the guise of it being due to EC3. We got a couple of bad handicap matches, a fairly decent street fight between Robbie E and Jessie, and EC3 being a joke as champion facing jobbers and then getting tapped out by Kurt, but he retains due to a DQ because he punched the ref. Dixie Carter returned and said that Ethan would have to defend the title without her help, and that it was time for a new authority figure. There may also need to be a new faction out to get the TNA Title and all of the power that comes with it, but the jury’s out on that one.

The show begins with a recap of EC3 defending his title three times, and then Dixie’s return. Josh talks about all the speculation about the new leader of TNA and Dixie is mid-ring. She says that the last time she was in the ring, she went through a table and had the fans cheering it. The building looks absolutely packed – but that’s because of the roster being outside the ring. She says she let the fans down, the roster down, and that she’s sorry to the roster and to the fans. Breaking her back gave her newfound respect for the industry. She says the future is bright for TNA, and while that’s easy to doubt, and when she makes promises, it’s easy to fear that she’ll break them. She’ll do everything she can to never let anyone in TNA down again, and she means that. Well, this is just a bizarre mix of storyline and reality.

She’s sorry for lying, so if that’s the case, then how do we know she isn’t lying now? She introduces The Law – Bully Ray. He shows up in a shiny pleather suit jacket, jeans, and an oversized T-shirt. He shakes everyone on the roster’s hands while Josh says that big changes are in store for this week and every other week. So just like every other week, every week of Impact is special. Bully says Dixie called her to say that she was sorry for what she’d done to the fans, to the roster, and he believes her. Bully says that he thinks she’s finally telling the truth for the first time in her life, and he’s glad to be in a company with the best roster in the world. He’s coming back for the fans and for the roster. Bully doesn’t want the roster on the floor – he wants them on the apron. Could it be time for an impromptu reverse battle royal?

Bully says that the roster, the crew, the travel team, and everyone in TNA cares about TNA despite what Dixie has put them through. It’s good enough for Bully, but he’s leaving the decision up to the fans. He wants to bring TNA back to the promised land and says he won’t hug or kiss Dixie, but he’ll shake her hand. Bully says it’s time for them to have what TNA does best – have a great wrestling show, and EC3 will defend the title tonight against the winner of a 20 man battle royal that begins now. Well, this is fairly organic and logical – I dig it.

    20 Man No. 1 Contender’s Battle Royal

Jessie attacks EY in the corner while Norv Fernum has been eliminated. Manik gets rid of Crazzy Steve. Magnus and Bram brawl a bit and Khoya eliminates Mandrews. Josh says that Bully Ray is trending on Twitter and that you should follow Dixie. Shark Boy is eliminated amid a Shark Week plug. Manik is eliminated and Robbie punches Abyss. Magnus clotheslines Abyss over the top and Josh tells him to go get some more catering. Drew backdrops Storm out and Magnus goes out too.

We’re down to MVP, EY, and Drew. We get clips of eliminations, with Jessie taking out Robbie and Micah taking out Kenny King. MVP hits the corner kick on Drew allowing the one-time allies of EY and MVP to attack Drew more. EY’s newly-expanded tattoo looks pretty good – not sure why he’d suddenly decide to get a lot of ink in his late ’30s, but it works for him. Drew fights back with punches. EY dumps MVP. Drew Galloway avoids a charge and hits a Sick Kick in the corner to send EY to the floor. This was pretty much every nothing battle royal ever, but with some storyline continuity.

We get clips of Sting being inducted in the TNA hall of fame. Next week, Dixie will announce the 2015 Hall of Famer. Pope and Josh talk about the battle royal and the Bram vs. Anderson match last week. Mike Tenay conducts an interview with him. Ken says he’s 39 and feels great, but if his career ended tomorrow, he’d be happy with what happened in his career. Does he need another injury though? We get clips of Bram destroying people, and he honestly comes off like a bit of a badass here. Ken says he’ll “go there” if needed, which is odd since he’s never really been a badass outside of the Angle feud. Bully is backstage asking “Seven letter word for obese? DREAMER!” Ha. Spud says he and Bully didn’t get along, but Bully wants him to believe in himself. Bully says he took Kurt to the limit, and tonight, he’s giving Spud a shot to be a three-time X Division champion. Bully and Spud have tremendous chemistry – Spud should be the Tajiri to his Regal.

We get clips of Kurt Angle’s 2013 Hall of Fame induction video. For at least the second time in the show, Josh said that they’ve had a fast and furious start to the show. We go backstage to Drew for an interview talking about how tiring battle royals are and his destiny is to be World Heavyweight Champion. Eli tells him to go make history – didn’t they break up? Shouldn’t that end their friendship using wrestling logic. We get clips of Trump’s bad PR, which makes no sense in theory, but TNA has been advertising a Tigre Uno promo on him on their site throughout the day. TNA didn’t mention this though, which is a bit daft. Speaking of not mentioning things, Grado is out for some reason as is DJZ. Is this is a multi-man match for the X Title or is it a one on one match for the title with Spud and Uno? Spud’s out, and Uno finishes this, so it’s a four-way match for the title.

Tigre Uno vs. Rockstar Spud vs. Grado vs. DJZ – X Title

Josh finally explains that next week, Uno will talk about the Trump issue. Grado avoids a go-behind lift by DJZ via deadweighting him and then attacking with his ass before slapping it. Grado tells Spud to hit him in the belly, which doesn’t work, so Spud tries a slam but Grado falls on him for 2. Uno gets a running Pele on DJZ leads to an inverted atomic drop and both Spud and Grado punching DJZ. Pope says that Spud and Grado are countrymen, while Josh corrects him. Spud and Grado argue, but eat a double dropkick from Uno. Tigre gets the Phoenix splash to maybe one knee of Grado after overshooting and gets the win. Finish aside, this was a lot of fun. Next, Taryn defends against Brooke.

Taryn and the Dollhouse talk about Brooke, while we get the hourglass video because Gail is seemingly going to ensure that reign ends tonight. Brooke comes out shaking her ass, while Taryn comes out with the Dollhouse and their dollhouse. Taryn comes out to wrestle this title match in lingerie while Pope instructs Josh to please be quiet during her intro.

Taryn Terrell vs. Brooke – Knockouts Title

The Dolls distract leading to a sneak attack. Taryn hits a bizarre rana headstand without a rana in the corner for 2. Josh, for this match, is a face as he is opposed to the Dolls attacking Brooke. Brooke counters a pair of Irish whips with a Russian legsweeps. Taryn gets a back elbow and a missile dropkick, but her cutter is countered by a bad dropkick. Brooke gets jumped on the apron and Taryn smacks her face on the steps and says “that looks like it hurt”.

Taryn as a heel is so great. Taryn gets 2 off a crossbody. Brooke gets 2 off a bad cradle and Taryn misses a missile dropkick. Brooke gets a series of elbows, forearms, and lariats. Taryn laughs and eats a horrendous spear from Brooke. Brooke goes up and gets tossed off by Jade. The lights went out. Did Dixie lie to the power company? Nope – it’s ninja Gail Kim kicking ass! Gail’s gone, but Brooke gets the worst X Factor ever for the win. Everything not involving Gail here sucked. In an amusing bit, she jumps into Earl’s arms and he’s overjoyed. Kurt meets with Bully for an announcement.

Kurt comes out and says that Bully told him the rematch didn’t happen, so Kurt gets a rematch whenever he wants. But Kurt has a tumor in his neck, so he’ll be out a while. When he gets back, he’ll get his rematch. EY comes out and Josh says he’s the most deranged man he has ever known. EY attacks him with the mic and says that it’s time for Kurt to go. EY rakes the eyes on the floor and Melendez prevents a piledriver on the floor, leading to EY hitting one on him on the floor while Pope yells about it and turns this into near-comedy. Next, we’ll see Magnus vs. James Storm from Slammiversary – presumably due to the Hernandez-Lucha Underground issues that are apparently preventing TNA from legally airing his match footage now.

We see Team 3D’s Hall of Fame induction video. Pope has his action figure next to his pimp shades in the announcing room in the office. They air clips of the Magnus vs. Storm match from Slammiversary, which had one of the best event recaps in the site’s history from Bryan Alvarez, but with some new graphics for the announcers – so if TNA’s Greatest Matches gets renewed, they’ve got it ready to go. This was great in the sense that it made you want to see the whole match, and then we get a recap of what’s happened between them since that show with Mickie having one more match against a woman of Storm’s choosing. Storm says he started a revolution and he’s got a partner – it’s someone very close to Mickie James.

Storm accepts her call and comes off as such a great slimeball. In two weeks, Magnus and Mickie face Storm and the mystery woman. Bully meets with EC3 and says he really needs a door and that EC3 is probably pissed about something. EC3 says they should really hype the rematch with Kurt up more though, and while it’s not as great as Bobby Heenan wanting a match with “Cowboy” Bob Ellis delayed for “only a mere six or eight months” due to a knee injury from the first Wrestling Gold DVD set, it was amusing. EC3 vs. Drew Galloway is up next.

Drew comes out to his kick-ass theme looking like a top star with that and his swank ring jacket. Josh hypes up EC3 and his new merch on ShopTNA. For the record, Josh was a face for the knockouts title match, and a heel here.

EC3 vs. Drew Galloway – TNA World Title

Drew shoves him into the corner while Josh talks about Drew wanting clean finishes. Josh talks about how exhausted Drew could be after the battle royal. Why? He did basically one move. EC3 goes to the floor to avoid Drew, but he chops away and the fans hold him in place for one of them. Eli is down to counter Tyrus as we go to a break.

EC3 gets a seated full nelson and a lariat. A dueling Ethan’s awesome/no he’s not chant breaks out. EC3 gets him in a kneeling camel clutch, which Josh points out was done improperly since Drew was on his knees in a vertical position. EC3 chants his name while smashing Drew’s head into the mat – nice spot. Drew gets him up in a fireman’s carry and punts his stomach on the top rope. Drew gets a powerslam for 2. Tyrus pulls a leg to prevent another pinfall. Another leg grab leads to a Stinger splash and Tyrus telling the camera guy to get out of his face. Drew gets a Kobashi machine gun chop in the corner. Drew accidentally elbows the ref and EC3 low blows him. Eli Drake prevents a Tyrus attack, but Eli attacks Drew with the crutch. Oh no – it’s the breakup of Drew and a guy named Eli Drake who he was affiliated with who we know nothing about, or their alliance. EC3 hits the headlock driver for the win. Eli isn’t going to #standup, but will he #showhisimpact or #jointheforce?

  • Gail Kim talks training and changing women’s wrestling

TNA Impact Wrestling’s Gail Kim took some time to participate in an interview with Marc Madison of The News Hub. The former WWE Women’s Champion and TNA Knockout champion revealed her thoughts on her early training, her rekindled passion for the sport and what the future holds for her. Check out excerpts of the interview below and to read the interview in its entirety please click here:

About here training under Ron Hutchison, Rob Etcherverria and Dave ‘Fit’ Finley:

Ron was the first person that I went to and trained with and obviously a lot of people associate him training Edge and Christian, Trish Stratus, many great Canadian wrestlers so I knew that was the place to be. He really taught me psychology and taught me the basics and taught me right. A lot of wrestling schools would grab the student and say hey you can learn this cool move and do a moonsault your first month in and he really just pump trained us on the basics in terms of psychology and train wrestling and after we moved onto the more advanced stuff and he was a great trainer.

When I trained with Rob and I was a student of his (Ron) and Rob decided later on to open up his own school and he favored the Mexican style of wrestling, the Lucha style also I took a liking to that as well. Once I had enough experience where I could have matches, pretty much a year after that I could be fearless with Rob and he was very supportive towards the women.

When I joined the WWE, Dave “Fit” Finley was our first agent that we worked with all the time and he brought in another form of aggression in me. I was very green when I started but he always said to me, “you need to be more aggressive”. I thought I was being aggressive but he was would say “no, more aggressive” and then more aggressive. I think each one of them gave me a little piece of who I am today and I think if you were to ask any of the women that I work with I think that is one of the things that they’ll acknowledge about me is that I like to be physical and I’ve become more aggressive. I think each one of them (Ron, Rob and Dave) you’ll see a part of me when I wrestle.

About her initial run with TNA and the decision to be aligned with America’s Most Wanted:

He (Scott D’Amore) said we want to build the women’s division and but the only thing is we only have an hour of programming and realistically it won’t happen for a little while and he said we want to bring you in and we want you to manage and they wanted to give me a prominent role, this was Jeff Jarrett and America’s Most Wanted and I said oh, I’d love to do that and I did that for over a year and that was really fun. All the guys in that company were always so supportive of the women including women. Sometimes you may see back in the day women come down there and really do nothing and hope to be a part of and get camera time. They always included me and then eventually me just having a passion for the sport of wrestling was very hard for me to just stand on the outside and watch the guys do what I’ve loved and eventually I said, ‘you know guys’ you said that you wanted to have a women’s division and I’ve been waiting and you know I just can’t wait anymore so luckily Jeff (Jarrett) said can you work with Jackie Moore and I said yeah, absolutely.

I can work with whoever you want me to work with she’s absolutely amazing and the toughest women I’ve been in the ring with so we just had some amazing catfights as you would call them, physicality and people loved it and people were like oh, holy crap these girls are beating the crap out of each other and so just went slowly with Jackie and brought in Jamie D from the Independents and they would bring in girls slowly one at a time and then all of a sudden they said they wanted to bring in a title and bring in 10 girls and it was just a success overnight virtually and it just happened so perfectly I couldn’t have asked for anything better.

On whether or not TNA Impact Wrestling capitalized on #GiveDivasAChance:

I don’t think it’s ever really changed. The true wrestling fans that watch TNA Impact, I think they’ve always known. I don’t want to say they take it for granted in anyway but they always just know that TNA and Impact Wrestling are going to give them women’s wrestling. It’s almost like they want to see it in the WWE and this is why they are so vocal as well. I don’t know if anything really changed.

I think we’ve always been strong with women’s wrestling and I think the fans have always known that. I think that’s a lot of the reason why they would tune in from the feedback I get from it through social media or meeting fans or that’s one of the things that I think that they love is that they would always say Impact Wrestling treats the women really well and one of the reasons they love watching it is because the women’s actually wrestle. I’m just glad when I was fighting for us to wrestle I would always have people tell me Gail, women’s wrestling is for the bathroom breaks, you know they really don’t want to see it. I would get discouraged a little bit but I was very adamant so I’m glad that we girls proved them wrong.

  • Update on Davey Richards

The preliminary indications we were given is that Davey Richards suffered a stinger last night in a match last night in West Virginia, which is resulting in his having to miss his weekend Evolve bookings.
