    FRIDAY DAILY UPDATE

    WWE

    • The Bellas were in Paris yesterday.  The were within 6km of some of the attacks.  They posted on their twitter and instagram.
    • Fusion has an article blaming WWE for the political rise of Donald Trump.  Trump hosted two different WrestleMania events in the 1980s and also appeared as a cornerman for a Bobby Lashley vs. Umaga match which, at the time, was the biggest-money WrestleMania event in history.  Trump had his hair on the line against the hair of Vince McMahon, which, of course, led to Vince being shaved bald.
    • Danny in the UK wrote in to talk about the “WHO ARE YOU?” chants at the Raw and Smackdown shows for guys like Braun Strowman and Tyler Breeze. “We do not use this chant because we don’t actually know who he is, it’s more of an insult for someone who is new or rather insignificant. It has been popularised at football matches here for example if a big club such as Manchester United played a smaller club such as Doncaster Rovers, everyone here knows who Doncaster are and where they are located but they would use the chant as an insult towards the smaller club. The NXT show will be awesome when it comes to the UK and the crowd will be on fire.”
    • Information on the next WWE Performance Center All Access weekend in January is up on the WWE.com website.
    • Here’s a column on Hulk Hogan speaking about the potential of John Cena someday turning heel.
    • Steve Austin got a mention in this WSJ article about podcasting. (Thanks to Nick DeLeon)
    • Smackdown was up slightly this week to 2.3 million viewers from the 2.1 million last week.

    • Dana White tweeted the reverse angle of the Ronda Rousey-Holly Holm weigh-in staredown/confrontation.
    • Here’s the entire thing complete with Ronda’s fiery promo after their altercation at the weigh-ins.
    • Ronda Rousey was announced as the cover athlete for EA Sports UFC 2 in an extensive trailer talking about how she grew up loving EA Sports games and now gets to be on the cover of one. EA Sports’ site has a list of the new features in the game, while Shaun Al-Shatti at MMAFighting has an interview with game director Brian Hayes.
    • Ronda on Thursday said that Miesha Tate’s best bet for a title shot was to just wait around for her to retire.  She’s been talking retirement a lot lately, and she claimed she had more miles on her body than Miesha did with all of the surgeries and arthritis she said she was battling.  She said if Miesha just waited around, she probably could face Holly at some point in a title match.  As far as Holm getting the title shot and not Miesha, she noted she’d already beaten Miesha’s ass twice.
    • To keep her geek cred solid, Rousey talks her love of Star Wars.
    • What about Rousey the retired buffalo farmer? There is no shortage of outlets trying to come up with any angle for a story.
    • UFC announced they now have an app for Amazon’s devices.
    • Tim Kennedy continues is call-out spree. Both in the calling out for a fight sense and the calling out to accuse fighters of using steroids sense.
    • A couple of fights recently announced for upcoming UFC cards – For UFC 195 in Vegas on January 2nd, unbeaten Brian Ortega takes on Diego Brandao in a Featherweight bout. For Fight Night 81 in Boston, the loaded FS 1 show headlined by the Dillashaw/Cruz Bantamweight title fight, Lightweight prospects Beneil Dariush and Mairbek Taisumov square off.
    • Ray Sefo of the World Series of Fighting announced Jake Shields vs. Jon Fitch for the vacant WSOF Welterweight Title on April 1st.  The last champion, Rousimar Palhares, was stripped of the title following the fight with Shields earlier this year where he held onto a Kimura too long and allegedly raked Shields’ eyes.  Shields was so upset after the fight that he punched Palhares, which ended up with him being disciplined as well.

    • Rey Mysterio called into Busted Open Radio Friday on the anniversary of Eddie Guerrero’s death. On being ready to be World Champion at the time he got the title, Mysterio said,  “No, especially not under those circumstances. I guess my career was heading in a different direction. We had just finished our feud with my son, Dominic, and the great story that Eddie put together and how much passion he threw behind that, that character that he was. He was ready to move on with Batista and I really don’t know where I was going, but that changed direction completely for, I believe, for everyone. So I really wasn’t ready at the time, but of course you’ve got to make the best out of it. This was a big opportunity for me and the people knew. The people knew that it was going down for Eddie. I was put on the spot, but I was there representing Eddie.”

To be honest with you the only person who can truly answer that is Shane. It will always be in his blood to be in the business, whether or not he ever comes back. I don’t know, I couldn’t tell you. But he’s one of those guys that truly loves the business, he loved everything about it but maybe it was something he had to prove to himself.”

  • Daily Update: UFC 193 Ronda Rousey vs Holly Holm, Eddie Guerrero anniversary

UFC 193 Ronda Rousey vs Holly Holm

Ronda Rousey did a last minute PPV sell job by getting in Holly Holm’s face and saying that she sees through her fake nice girl persona.

While I’m sure they will announce 70,000 as the attendance, the real number will not be close.  But Etihad Stadium will be full or very close to it.  There were thousands of lower priced tickets left as of yesterday.  The gate right now is $8.5 million in Australian dollars which is $6 million plus in U.S. dollars, so it’ll be among the biggest gates in UFC history but not close to the Toronto record or that of the recent WrestleManias.

If you go back five years, it is completely ridiculous that a show headlined by two women’s fights will legit draw more than 45,000 fans live and whether it does or doesn’t, it is entirely possible can do 1 million buys on PPV.  The very concept of that would have been unheard of to the point it would be ridiculous.

I guess because of the Rousey vs. Correia numbers, this is the first time for a Rousey headlined show that I haven’t seen tons of stuff about how the show will bomb and how the UFC blew it with putting her on top because nobody is going to buy it.  Remember all those WNBA analogies on why this was going to flop?

Joanna Jedrzejczyk whispered to Valerie Letourneau at a media event that she was going to end her career.  Most figure that the fighters who have the biggest chances to make themselves stars are Joanna, Holm (if she wins, however great the odds are) and perhaps Robert Whittaker for the Australian market.

There were about 9,000 fans at today’s weigh-in, the second largest number in UFC history.

Nothing from the show is trending on Google, unlike Rousey’s last fight where she started trending days before the fight and did totally ridiculous numbers.

UFC has brought Julianna Pena to Australia, which seems to indicate they may want to have something set up with her and Rousey if Rousey wins.  Right now the plan is for Rousey, if she wins, to headline UFC 200 in July next, as she’ll take time off for movie commitments.

We’re looking for reports on today’s WWE show in Nottingham, England, NXT in Orlando, ROH in Milwaukee (A.J. • The largest crowd ever in the U.S. for a legitimate wrestling match will be tomorrow at 11 a.m. at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, IA for the Iowa vs. Oklahoma State dual meet.  There were 34,000 tickets sold to the event as of Wednesday afternoon, doubling the all-time collegiate dual meet record.  With good weather and tons of people expected coming to town for the Iowa vs. Minnesota football game tomorrow night, they are hopeful of a good walkup with talks of 37,000 to 40,000.  The show will air on tape delay on the Big 10 Network (DirecTV 610, Dish 405) ion Sunday at about 6:15 p.m.   The previous dual meet record was 15,996 fans for the Penn State vs. Pitt meet on December 8, 2013.
    • Today’s Ben Askren vs. Luis Santos ONE welterweight title fight never happened because Santos weighed in at 172 pounds.  Askren then told Santos he would fight him in a non-title match as long as Santos agreed to be weighed in going into the cage at less than 190 pounds.  Santos showed up gigantic to Singapore.  Santos refused.  Victor Cui, the president of ONE, was furious at Santos for turning down the fight.  Santos then called Askren a pussy for not accepting the fight under any weight, since the title wasn’t going to be at stake.  “If the fight is not for the belt, why does it matter?  At this point he’s just scared.  I’m ready to fight him, but it looks like he’s not.”  Way to dig the hole deeper, buddy
    • After being fired by WWE today, Billy Gunn was announced as appearing on 2/5 and 2/6 for Preston City Wrestling in the U.K.

    • WWE stock didn’t move today, staying even and closing the weekend at $16.38 per share.

    THURSDAY DAILY UPDATE

    • Mirko Cro Cop posted that he took injections of Growth Hormone to aid with his shoulder recovery and that’s what he failed his test for.  He clearly wasn’t happy that it got out, I guess figuring that if he announced his retirement it wouldn’t get out.
    • Ronda Rousey said today that due to acting roles, she probably won’t fight again after Saturday until UFC 200 in July.
    • A Ronda Rousey story on if there is a double standard regarding domestic violence regarding her story in her book of beating up an ex-boyfriend who took nude photos of her
    • Ratings for last night saw TNA do 277,000 viewers for the 9 p.m. show and 97,000 at midnight.  ROH did 172,000 at 11 p.m.  Everybody was up from last week.
    • Undertaker was on the Tonight Show last night.  They did a segment where he gave a tombstone piledriver to a guy in a turkey suit.  Brad Maddox, who wasn’t identified, with the guy who took the tombstone.
    • There are a number of unique shows this weekend:

The Iowa vs. Oklahoma State wrestling meet outdoors on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at Kinnick Stadium has now sold 34,000 tickets, meaning it will be the largest crowd ever to witness a college wrestling match, and for that matter, a legit wrestling match, ever in the U.S.  In fact, it will double the all-time dual meet record.  It will air on TV Sunday at about 6:30 p.m. on the Big Ten Network.

Insane Championship Wrestling in Glasgow this weekend with Grado vs. Drew Galloway is expected to draw the largest crowd from a U.K. based promotion since 1982, with a sellout of 4,000 fans.

    • Dwayne Johnson appears Sunday on Oprah’s Master Class on OWN at 8 p.m. Eastern, talking about his mother.
    • Drew Gulak on the Two Man Power Trip radio show, when asked if he’s signed a WWE deal, said, “I am not allowed to speak on that issue.  If I was allowed to, I would be in great detail. But I can’t really elaborate on my business with WWE, or if there has been any business with WWE.”
    • The piece on Roman Reigns being a big 49ers fan that aired on TV in San Jose on Sunday (there is a link in the Monday update) was really cool.  He came across real well talking about the thrill of headlining WrestleMania in the 49ers home stadium but not winning, and they pushed Leo Nomellini, who in the 50s was both an all-time great lineman during the season and the area’s biggest pro wrestling star for many years during every off season.

    MISCELLANEOUS

    • The Baseball Hall of Fame made some changes yesterday.  They are dropping the number of years you can be on the ballot from 15 to ten.  There was a recommendation to raise the number of people you could vote on from 10 to 12, but that was rejected.  “At some point, there has to be a line drawn,” said Hall of Fame Vice President Brad Horn.  “To retain the exclusivity of the Baseball Hall of Fame, entering the Hall of Fame should be difficult.”  Last year was the first year more than half the people who voted, voted for the maximum ten people. (thanks to Houston Mitchell)
    • Luis Santos failed to make weight earlier today for his fight tomorrow with Ben Askren for the One welterweight title.  No word if this fight will happen.  Santos got down to 172 pounds and needed to make 170.
    • A note on a question we had on Monday regarding why Mike Tyson never fought George Foreman.  There were talks for such a match in 1990.  Don King wanted it, because Tyson who had just lost to Buster Douglas, had seen Foreman destroy Joe Frazier as a kid and Cus D’Amato told Tyson why it happened, that Frazier’s style and the height difference made Frazier winning an impossibility, and said the only person who could beat Foreman was a rangy boxer who could fight from a distance.  Tyson has more similarities with Frazier and Cus’ words always stayed with him. (thanks to Alfonso Garcia and many others)
    • There is a major convention Saturday in at LaGuardia Plaza Hotel in Elmhurst, NY with all kinds of big names including Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Kevin Nash, Pete Rose, Ricky Steamboat, Barry Windham, Tully Blanchard, Scott Hall, Carlito, Ted DiBiase, Missy Hiatt, Angelina Love, Davey Richards, Eddie Edwards, Sid Vicious, Torrie Wilson, Christy Hemme, Marty Jannetty, Jim Neidhart, Tajiri, Mickie James, Brooke, Madison Rayne, Dan Malenko, Vince Russo, Bill Apter, Bob Backlund, Jessie Godderz, Taz, EC 3 and many more.

    WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE

    WWE

    • Seth Rollins underwent successful surgery under Dr. Jeffrey Dugas on Tuesday to repair his torn ACL, MCL and medial meniscus.  WWE has a series of photos up on the website right now, and it appears WWE Network cameras were there documenting it for a future special.  The story is that this past Monday was the very first Raw show since he was called up from NXT in 2012 that he didn’t appear on, the only person ever to hold that distinction.
    • If you haven’t seen it, here is video of Seth Rollins blowing out his knee in Dublin during the Kane match.
    • Brock Lesnar was added to the January 9th house show at the Toyota Center in Houston, TX.
    • Undertaker is scheduled to be on Raw Monday.  Was awesome the way they promoted that at the end of this week’s Raw.  Oh, wait.
    • Daniel Bryan did an interview with WrestlingInc during his publicity tour of India. Great line on him being seen as an “indie darling” yet getting over with the WWE fanbase at large: There was a lot of hesitation, as far as like, “Wait a second, how is this 5’8″, 190 pound average person going to connect with these people”, in what they call as “superstars”? We’re called superstars, so, “How is he going to connect?” And that was the biggest question mark. They had a lot of doubts about me for a long time, but the real benchmark, for if somebody can connect with the WWE Universe, is if they connect. So it doesn’t matter if you’re big or small or whatever; if I go out there and the fans react, well then I’ve done my job.
    • This is kind of sad.  Remembering World Championship Wrestling at Walt Disney World.

    UFC/MMA

    • Science Daily has a story citing a study which discovered that while MMA is more bloody than boxing, boxing presents a greater risk of serious injury.
    • Tim Kennedy really, really wants Vitor Belfort for his next fight. From the linked Facebook post: I am asking for Vitor Belfort for my next fight. Not because he is slower and fatter (even though he is) or because he can only use slightly less steroids, but because he is treated as a legend. He has been cheating his entire career. He doesn’t deserve anything but a good ass whooping and to be stricken from the books of MMA history.
    • One Championship Pride of Lions airs on the Fight Network in Canada on Friday morning and is also available on iPPV. The show features a rematch between Ben Askren and Luis Santos after their first fight ended in a no contest earlier this year. The show also features an up and coming Strawweight fighter that is someone to watch for in Angela Lee. She’s had submission wins in both of her career fights for One and is obviously someone they have big plans for as she’s already on the main card 3 fights into her pro career. A full preview of the show is available here
    • Episode 2 of the UFC Embedded series previewing UFC 193 is available here

    TODAY’S NEWS UPDATE

    WWE

    • Royal Rumble tickets for the January 24th, 2016 show in Orlando, FL officially go on sale this coming Friday.
    • Dorian Roldan of AAA was on Busted Open Radio yesterday and announced that the AAA Mega Title, which had been held by Alberto Del Rio, is now vacant and they will be doing a tournament to crown a new champion.  He flat-out said Alberto will not, in fact, be returning to Mexico for any dates for AAA, which was pretty much clear as soon as he no-showed the event last Sunday on a day that he had no other commitments for WWE.  He will be working the upcoming WWC show because WWE has a working relationship with WWE Hall of Famer Carlos Colon.
    • There will be two “Legends With JBL” shows next week with Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin and others talking the career of Undertaker, one on Monday night and one on Thursday night.  As noted on Raw, next week is Undertaker Week on the WWE Network.
    • Tonight’s WWE guest on SportsCenter will be King Barrett.  The spot last night on Raw where Wayne Rooney slapped the hell out of him got a ton of media attention in the UK this morning, including airing as the top story on many sports telecasts.
    • Roman Reigns talks to Planeta Wrestling at the Spanish WWE 2K16 launch event.

    UFC/MMA

    • This story about Russia and doping was everywhere yesterday, a huge news story.  There is discussion of Russia actually being banned from next year’s Olympic Games for running their own doping program.
    • EA Sports officially announced EA Sports UFC 2 for “Spring.” (last time, this meant the last Tuesday of Spring) with a “vision trailer.” A full feature list will be announce Friday. The first game got mixed reviews, but was improved by a lot of free updates.
    • The first episode of UFC 193: Embedded with Ronda Rousey is available. She gives her response to the “lube shaming” controversy, and it’s not pretty.
    • Speaking of Rousey, her embattled head trainer Edmond Tarverdyan talked about his relationship with Double-R and whether Holly Holm is the best female boxer of all time. There was no mention in the transcript of his recent tax issues.
    • Bellator 145 : With a Vengeance Friday night on Spike TV did 814,000 viewers. This is slightly up from the 800,000 viewers for the previous “tentpole” event, which had far greater star power and more promotion. It’s also way up from the last Friday show on October 23rd that did just 555,000 viewers.
    • UFC Fight Night 77 Saturday on FS 1 did 757,000 viewers for the main card and 609,000 for the prelims show. This was up against very heavy football completion on the major networks. The main card number was below average for the year for UFC on FS 1 although the prelims number is solid.
    • Top bantamweight contender and former title challenger Michael McDonald will make his return to UFC after over two years off due to injury. He’s signed to fight Masenori Kanehara at UFC 195 in Vegas. McDonald was submitted by Urijah Faber in his last fight at UFC on FOX 9 in December 2013.
    • Dave has articles at MMAFighting about Saturday’s UFC Fight Night card and the impending return of the New Year’s Eve war in Japan.
    • We’re told that in the finale of Master Of None on Netflix, there’s a reference to CM Punk. Apparently in another episode, Aziz Ansari shows off some wrestling moves.
    • Strawweight title contender Valerie Letourneau and Hector Lombard did an interview with Submission Radio prior to this Saturday’s big UFC show.

    Other Wrestling

    • 5 Star Wrestling announced on Facebook that Rey Mysterio will not only face AJ Styles at their upcoming event, but also be the first officially-licensed wrestler to appear in their wrestling game. The PlayStation 4 version of 5 Star Wrestling is named ReGenesis and will at least have Rey Mysterio in the game as a playable character. It will be his first video game appearance since leaving WWE.
    • Cibernetico on his Twitter (https://twitter.com/ciberelite) has claimed that he’s leaving AAA to join Elite.  If this is true, in terms of workrate it’s not the end of the world for AAA, but it is yet another big name that has bailed on the heels of Alberto Del Rio and the original Mistico.
    • Regarding last night’s Observer Radio and the talk of the first third-generation wrestler and whether it really was the Rock, David Bixenspan writes: “Dwayne Johnson was just the first in WWE. Eddie Gilbert was, as far as I know, one of the first. Tommy’s father Arlie, was a carnival era pro wrestler. It was primarily brought up around Eddie’s debut.”  Les Thatcher also writes, “Ron & Robert Fuller, father Buddy, Grandfather Roy Welch. Also from that same family tree, Roy Lee & Jackie Welch, Jimmy Golden, Ricky Fields, etc.” At least part of that familial relationship was kayfabed for years.
    • A few big indie shows in the NY area this Saturday. During the day, there’s the Big Event convention, and in the evening, both Jersey All Pro Wrestling (anniversary show/Frank Iadevaia memorial) and House of Hardcore (NY debut) have big shows. HOH also has a Friday night show in Philadelphia that will be an IPPV.

    Wrestling Observer Newsletter

Here is the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer: November 9, 2015 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: 2015 Hall of Fame Issue

Our most talked about issue of the year, the 2015 Hall of Fame issue is up on the site right now.  This is a double-issue featuring notes on the seven new inductees, the complete balloting results for the year along with last year, plus how the top candidates did with reporters, historians, and those who are currently and formerly in the business.  You’ll see how the different groups voted, as well as notes on everyone who went in, what kept those who came close from getting in, thoughts on next year’s ballot, and a look at the careers of the inductees.  There is also a super history of Montreal wrestling in the new issue, as well as a story on the modern Mexican scene.

    SATURDAY NEWS UPDATE

    WWE

    • An angle aired today on WWC television to build an Alberto Del Rio vs. Ray Gonzalez match with Del Rio coming for revenge for what Gonzalez did to Ricardo Rodriguez, and Gonzalez looking for revenge for Alberto beating up his son in an angle shot before he signed with WWE. WWE confirmed to us that he will be working the next major show that they’re pushing. Carlos Colon works as a local promoter for WWE, and his son and nephew (Los Matadores/Primo and Epico) are allowed a certain number of dates they can work for him each year.
    • 2K Sports released the first patch for WWE 2K16 late last night, with patch notes up on their official forum. All sorts of issues have been fixed and the game was also readied to accept forthcoming downloadable new moves. The game, which has been the most well-received version in years, is available here.
    • The Dallas Morning News did a piece on Mark Henry.

    UFC/MMA

    • If you didn’t see our additions to the front page story on Fedor Emelianenko’s potential opponent for New Year’s Eve, Japanese sources tell us that there are three fighters under consideration, two from pro wrestling and one from sumo. Yes, one of them is Tsuyoshi Kosaka despite Fedor’s American spokesperson Jerry Millen claiming it wasn’t going to be Kosaka.
    • Regarding Akebono and a rumored fight with Bob Sapp, although Akebono dropped the Triple Crown and quit All Japan earlier this week, he also allegedly announced recently that he had retired from MMA. Most likely, it’s best to not put too much stock into a guy claiming that he’s retired.
    • For those who missed it, the Glory 25 main card is available on demand as part of ESPN3/WatchESPN — their best card in a really long time and well worth checking out. That said, the officiating/judging got so bad that announcers Mauro Ranallo and Stephen Quadros were openly not just calling it out, but expressing concern about bad decisions before scores were even read. If you started watching Glory in the last year or so when they put on less loaded cards and got turned off, you need to check this one out, because the fights were high level and fantastic.
    • “Big” Fox aired UFC Embedded today at 2 PM EST in advance of next weekend’s UFC 193 PPV. The show was very good and probably worth going out of your way to check out.
    • The Fight Network in Canada will replay August’s UFC 190 (Ronda Rousey/Bethe Correia) Sunday at 9 PM EST.
    • Last night’s RFA 32 show on AXS had some of the worst refereeing you’re ever going to see on a national broadcast and in both cases, it was the same referee, last name Moreland. In the opener, Marc Hummel was making his pro debut and took 35 unanswered punches from Ryan Bader protege Logan Storley, who moved to 2-0. In the co-main event, Chad Curry did a face plant straight to the canvas after being hit by a straight right from Landon Vannata. Vannata went on to hit him with 18 straight elbows to the head before the ref finally stopped it. It honestly could’ve been stopped before he even hit the canvas.

    Other Wrestling

    • A fan asked Dixie Carter if there was any chance of a reconciliation between TNA and Spike TV on Twitter today and her response was: “I hear you!!!! Stay tuned!”  We have heard nothing at all about any discussions between the two sides about a reconciliation, but it certainly was interesting to see TNA stars all over Bellator on Spike last night.  That said, it’s probably best not to read too much into it.
    • On last night’s Wrestling Observer Radio, we discussed the Lei’d Tapa vs. Gabi Garcia fight (yes, FIGHT, an MMA battle) signed for RIZIN in Japan on New Year’s Eve plus tons of notes on Seth Rollins, all of the other crazy fights signed and more on last night’s special Wrestling Observer Radio for subscribers.  For whatever it’s worth, Tapa’s uncle, Sione Latu (the brother of her other uncle, the Barbarian) is a 1-0 MMA fighter thanks to a UFC win back in 1999 over Joey Roberts and has a MMA gym. Another Observer Radio show comes out tonight after UFC.
    • For those interested in anything CTE related, here’s a story about NFL players that are connected by CTE.
    • For his first HBO sports documentary, former ESPN star and noted wrestling fan Bill Simmons is making a documentary on Andre the Giant.
    • Former WWE wrestler and OVW long-timer Eugene is set to make his wrestling promoter debut in South Dakota.
    • Stan “Krusher” Kowalski will be honored July 16, 2016 with a LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD at the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Professional Hall of Fame in Waterloo, Iowa. Historian George Schire will present Kowalski with his award at the awards banquet.
    • XICW this Sunday at The Ritz (24300 Hoover Road in Warren, MI) featuring an in-ring WRESTLERS COURT plus Rhino, Zach Gowen, & more in action.
  • Daily update: WWE Shuffles their lineup, Bobby Lashley fights James Thompson

We’re looking for reports on today’s WWE shows in London, England (Kevin Owens vs. Dean Ambrose for IC title, Kane vs. Big Show, Dolph Ziggler vs. Tyler Breeze), Barcelona, Spain (Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt, Usos & Ryback vs. Braun Strowman & Luke Harper & Erick Rowan; Alberto Del Rio vs. Neville vs. King Barrett for U.S. title) and NXT in Jacksonville, FL.  Please email NEWSTIPS@WRESTLINGOBSERVER.COM

Tomohiro Ishii vs. Tomoaki Honma for Never Open weight title

Hiroshi Tanahashi & Katsuyori Shibata vs. Kazuchika Okada & Kazushi Sakuraba

Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Karl Anderson for IC title

A few notes for the show.  The big tease has been a mystery guy showing up after the main event who will challenge for the IC title at the Tokyo Dome.  This is the next to last PPV before the Dome, so expect some angles on this show to build to Dome matches.  They will either announce the tag team tournament lineup tonight, or in a day or two at the press conference, as well as announce a lot of the Tokyo Dome card.  The winner of the Super Junior tournament will challenge Fish & O’Reilly at the Tokyo Dome, but that could be a multiple team match.  In the eight-man juniors match, good booking would have it that Omega gets pinned and whoever does that becomes his top contender at the Dome.  Goto vs. Watanabe is the biggest match of Watanabe’s career.

WWE runs Saturday in Leeds, England (Kevin Owens vs. Dean Ambrose for IC title, Kane vs. Big Show, Dolph Ziggler vs. Tyler Breeze), Madrid, Spain (Roman Reigns vs. Bray Wyatt; Usos & Ryback vs. Braun Strowman & Luke Harper & Erick Rowan, Alberto Del Rio vs. Neville & King Barrett for U.S. title) and NXT is in Largo,FL.

    FRIDAY NEWS UPDATE

    • WWE shuffles injury-plagued lineup for overseas tour”>As noted earlier today, Kevin Owens vs. Dean Ambrose for the IC title was being moved to the “Rollins” tour to replace the injured Seth Rollins starting with today’s show in London at the O2 Arena.
    • WWE has to make a key decision this week regarding who will be the top heel.  Alberto Del Rio is already earmarked for John Cena, but Roman Reigns is slotted as the top babyface and Brock Lesnar as the top attraction.  With Bray Wyatt having just had a Hell in a Cell match with Reigns, he’s not the right guy for right now.  The heel is either going to have to win the tournament, or be the key opponent for whoever wins the tournament.  So the choices are Kevin Owens, Big Show, Braun Strowman, or turning a face like Cesaro, Dolph Ziggler or Dean Ambrose.
    • Kurt Angle announcing tonight’s Bellator, Lashley fights Thompson”>Besides Kurt Angle doing some announcing and Bobby Lashley fighting, Ken Shamrock has claimed he will be making a big announcement at tonight’s Bellator show.
    • Former UFC fighter Alan Belcher announced his retirement.  He said he’s doing it with no regrets.
    • Regarding the Jerry Jarrett and Shane Douglas promotion, these are two different promotions both looking at starting up and are not affiliated.  The Douglas group, Classic Wrestling Revolution, put out a trailer video.
    • For tonight’s CMLL show at Arena Mexico, there is a rare last minute change in the card.  La Mascara is off the card so Rush will team with Mistico against La Sombra & Volador Jr.  This has Rush & Sombra, usual tag partners, each teaming with babyfaces.  La Mascara is a regular partner of Rush.  The idea that the match would be everyone turning on Volador is less likely with Mistico as his partner.  Rush & Mistico are actually brothers, and haven’t teamed up in three years.

    WWE

    • WrestleMania tickets went on sale today at Ticketmaster.  There must be a high demand because the last time I checked for options the wait time was nine minutes.  Aside from ringside, the best tickets available as of a few hours ago were in the 200s section priced at $207.
    • Eva Marie and Linda McMahon represented WWE last night in accepting the Corporate Leadership Award from Soldier Strong.
    • The Boogeyman announced that he’s signed a WWE Legends deal.  The Young Bucks then posted that they would be signing one next, but that was a spoof.
    • Video review of WWE 2K16 in the New York Daily News

    UFC

  • Daily Update: Seth Rollins out with injury, Nick Diaz settlement rumors

    SETH ROLLINS INJURY AND FALLOUT

We’ve got a lot of new audio up on the site, including today’s Observer Live talking the Seth Rollins injury and WWE tournament with Bryan and Mike Sempervive, plus Matt Farmer, Bryan and I talk the 2015 class of the Hall of Fame and thoughts on next year.

There is a story on the front page on the Seth Rollins injury, which is devastating because WWE now has to revamp all its championship creative for the next several months, as well as change WrestleMania plans.  For those who haven’t seen the injury, this is the spot it happened.  Rollins continued the match after, but after being diagnosed after the show, will need surgery.

Brock Lesnar is somewhere in Alberta on a big annual hunting trip.  I don’t know that they are blowing up his phone, but right about now you’d think they’d be wanting some new dates from him.  But the company desperately needs a top heel.

No word yet on what form the title tournament will take.  I’m guessing they’ll try and keep everything under wraps until Raw on Monday, but if they keep the Undertaker & Kane match as is, that keeps Bray Wyatt out of the tournament.  They could do elimination matches on television as well to set up a final four or final eight on the PPV.

Another question is what happens on the show today in Cardiff, Wales, scheduled to be headlined by Seth Rollins vs. Kane.  The top heels on the tour are Sheamus and Tyler Breeze, and they could always turn Big Show heel again.  No word on whether they’ll move a heel from the Wyatt family or Kevin Owens from the other tour to fill the spot.

We’re looking for reports on today’s WWE shows in Cardiff, Wales, Glasgow, Scotland, the Dallas show tonight at the WrestleMania party (Samoa Joe vs. Baron Corbin, Apollo Crews vs. Tye Dillinger, Asuka vs. Peyton Royce, Blake & Murphy vs. Zack Ryder & Mojo Rawley, Carmella vs. Alexa Bliss) which is free and NXT in Lakeland, FL at dave@wrestlingobserver.com” target=”_blank”>dave@wrestlingobserver.com

We’re also be looking for reports tomorrow from WWE in London, which is the Rollins tour, although he’s not on the tour any longer; Barcelona, which is the Reigns tour, and the NXT show in Jacksonville, FL.

Saturday has the Rollins tour in Leeds, England, the Reigns tour in Madrid, Spain and the NXT show in Largo, FL.

DRAGON GATE GATE OF DESTINY iPPV AT 4:30 A.M. EASTERN AND 1:30 A.M. PACIFIC TIME at http://live.nicovidoe.jp/watch/lv238821844

Our only weekend poll will be for Power Struggle which takes place late tomorrow night U.S. time

New Japan’s Power Struggle PPV will be tomorrow night at 3 a.m. Eastern and midnight Pacific time, featuring Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Karl Anderson for their IC title and Rocky Romero & Trent Baretta vs. Ricochet & Matt Sydal in the finals of the Super Junior tag team tournament.

    WEDNESDAY NEWS UPDATE

    • WrestleMania tickets are still on sale today in the pre-sale before they go on sale to the public tomorrow.
    • Glory announced a contract with ESPN, after losing their deal with Spike.  Glory 25 from Monza,Italy, will be airing on ESPN 3 (its streaming site) tomorrow at 4 p.m. Eastern time).  it will be replayed at 1:30 a.m. on ESPN 2 late tomorrow night.
    • Rumors have it that Nick Diaz’s settlement will be an 18 month suspension and a $100,000 fine, which would be finalized soon and he’d be able to fight over the summer.  That’s an a lot more fair sentence.
    • Bobby Lashley said his goal for 2016 is to become the first person to hold the TNA & Bellator heavyweight title, with the idea that he figures nobody else will ever do that again.  The Lashley vs. James Thomson winner from tomorrow night is under consideration to face Kimbo Slice.  Lashley and Slice are friendly and Lashley has said that he won’t ask for the fight, but if offered, he won’t turn it down either.
    • AXS is pushing tomorrow night’s New Japan around the idea of seeing two matches of the year.  At 8 p.m. they’ll re-air the Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Kota Ibushi match that aired last week.  At 9 p.m. will be the Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Kazuchika Okada IWGP title match from January’s Wrestle Kingdom show.  I’m told Tanahashi vs. Okada with the full show built around it with preview packages and interviews is a great one hour broadcast.
    • Roderick Strong, Pentagon Jr. and Flamita were all double-booked for tomorrow, for both the ZZ Inc. show in Veracruz, and for Strong, an NSPW show in Quebec City, Pentagon Jr. on a show in Toronto and Flamita on a CaraLucha show.  I know that one wrestler from the U.S. just got his tickets for the ZZ Inc. show last night and was worried about whether it would take place.  Strong had agreed to the date, then never heard back, figured it wasn’t going to happen, and took the Quebec City booking in mid-September.  Strong got his flight tickets for Quebec City last week and was being advertised there for the past month.  Strong then contacted the promotion late last night and said what happened, as he heard from AAA, said he was taking the Mexico booking since he agreed to that one first.  NSPW is a  group that runs in Quebec and sells out more often than not in a 500 seat arena and has used a lot of major U.S indie names like Tommy Dreamer, Rhino, Young Bucks, Bobby Roode, Brian Cage, Sylvain Grenier, Johnny Gargano and others.  Sami Zayn, Kevin Owens and Mike Bailey were all regulars there in the past.  Don’t know anything about Pentagon Jr. and Flamita and which show they are working.

    WWE:

    • The WrestleMania on-sale party take place tonight at 6 p.m. at AT&T Stadium in Dallas featuring Steve Austin, Mark Henry, Lana, Lita, Booker T and others.  The event is free.  There will be Q&As and fans in attendance will get a code to purchase WrestleMania tickets tonight before the public on-sale tomorrow.  The matches listed at the top of the page will be taking place at the party.
    • The matches tonight in Dallas are being taped, whether for NXT television clips or something else, and the party footage is expected to air on Raw on Monday.
    • John Cena vs. Alberto Del Rio has been announced as the new main event for the WWE’s next show in Madison Square Garden on 12/26.  Cena vs. Del Rio is now pegged for Cena’s return program.  I suspect Mr. Cena’s phone has been buzzing today. (thanks to Mike Omansky)
    • The movie “Spectre” opens today throughout the U.S.  Dave Bautista is one of the stars and the movie did gigantic European box office last week and is expected to do the same here this week.
    • Ryan Pike from this site saw the movie last night in Calgary and said: Bautista’s role is a throwback to the old Bond henchmen, he’s good and one line got a hell of a laugh.
    • Paul Levesque and Corey Graves represented WWE last night at the Concussion Legacy Foundation Impact Awards dinner in Boston.  HHH presented the group with a sponsorship check from WWE to support further research.
    • On Monday’s Observer Live we were asked about why WWE plugged Mick Foley’s “Countdown to Lockdown” book when he was in TNA at the time.  It came after Foley did media interviews defending Linda McMahon when she was running for the senate.
    • WWE stock dropped 10 cents per share today to close at $17.45 per share.  It had a strong day yesterday.

    • Axl Rotten, the former ECW star, said yesterday that he’s signed a book deal for an autobiography.
    • Sinclair Broadcasting saw third quarter revenue increase 11 percent to $497.4 million.
    • Several other media stocks did badly yesterday, including Time Warner down 8.5 percent, Fox down 5.7 percent and Viacom down 5.6 percent.  Time Warner said profits would be below its previous target.  There is long-term trepidation about people moving away from cable TV, which is an issue for both WWE & UFC because it’s their main source of exposure and of making new fans.
    • We’re told Claro Sports will be airing CMLL this Friday after all, after earlier in the week that wasn’t the case.  It’s more likely than not to be geo-blocked in the U.S.
    • All-Star Wrestling on 11/13 in Vancouver, BC has an Adam Firestorm Memorial Rumble.  Today is the sixth anniversary of Firestorm’s death due to suicide at the age of 32.  The Vancouver show is a benefit show with the funds going into a trust fund for Firestorm’s son Thomas.
