Lord Humongous/Jeff Van Camp photo by Karl Stern

On this week’s show, Karl takes a few questions from the mailbag dealing with a wide range of topics including Survivor Series, Sid Vicious, and a couple off-topic questions. Then, Karl tackles the last episode of NWA Southeastern Championship Wrestling in June 1985 as he watches his favorite promotion be put to rest.

    Other topics:

    • We look at the original Survivor Series format — one that went head to head against Jim Crockett Promotions’ biggest show of the year and ultimately forced that show off its date
    • A talk about Ric Flair
    • Vince McMahon’s muscle monster fetish from the 1980s and 1990s with a focus on Sid Justice (Sid Vicious/Sycho Sid), Papa Shango, The Warlord, Davey Boy Smith, Ultimate Warrior, and more
    • “Dirt sheet” terminology
    • Indy show payoffs
    • The last NWA Southeastern Championship Wrestling show that aired in June 1985 featuring Ron Fuller, Lord Humongous (Jeff Van Camp), “Bullet” Bob Armstrong, Jerry Stubbs, Arn Anderson, and the death of my childhood.

  • DragonKingKarl Show: Mailbag, new incredibly bad wrestlers, smart fans

This edition of the DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Audio Show hosted by wrestling historian Karl Stern is a mailbag edition with questions and topics all over the place.  There is no one single “big” topic for this episode but some of the conversation includes:

    • The end of the “Super Stern Stick” flashdrive? Changes are coming and I talk about them.  If you’re interested in grabbing one please visit dragonkingkarl.com
    • I hear about a terrible wrestler I’ve never heard of before.  He did a big angle in the Mid-Atlantic area with the late Blackjack Mulligan.  He wore an eyepatch and a gangster suit.  He broke cinder blocks with his malformed hand.  I am making none of this up.  Find out who this monster is on today’s show.
    • There is a question about gloves being used in MMA and boxing.
    • One of the listeners to the show went to Dallas for WrestleMania and he talks about going to the site of the John F. Kennedy assassination and gives his thoughts on the JFK conspiracy.
    • The last email on today’s show is a fantastic follow up to Superman vs Batman: Dawn of Sadness.  It is probably the best description and review of the movie I have heard thus far.  There be spoilers in this here review and I don’t mean Don Jardine.

It’s an all over the board edition of the DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Audio Show today.  I wish this was more wrestling-centric but shows like this one often turn out to be my most popular ones.

  • DragonKingKarl Show: Mail bag! Continental Wrestling talk and Dawn of Justice RAGE!

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Audio Show: Mailbag show… sort of. I take a few mailbag questions but talk a little bit about Continental wrestling. Why I like Lucha Underground and I actually have good things to say about Vince Russo… sort of! Also on this show is my review of Batman vs Superman DAWN OF JUSTICE! I suppose I should spoiler warn this review but it is more of a complete evisceration of this CRAP of a movie than a spoiler filled review.  Even if I do spoil it for you you’ll probably thank me for it.

    On this show:

    • July Classic Wrestling Marathon content.
    • The evolution of wrestling isn’t what it seems. How VINCE RUSSO may have been on the right track… sort of.
    • Lucha Underground love.
    • Superfans from ECW, Jim Crockett, and other promotions.
    • Continental tape library.
    • More late starters in pro wrestling.
    • The Iron Sheik.
    • Jerry Jarrett and other promoters as a pro wrestler.
    • Then a possibly spoiler filled RAGE at the terrible Superman vs. Batman: Dawn of Justice movie.  The worst thing you ever saw.

  • DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Audio Show: WWE SummerSlam 1992 reviewed

****This is a free edition of the show. Please share!****

On this look back at WWF SummerSlam 1992, Karl watches and reviews the entire show: Shawn Michaels, Rick Martel, The Natural Disasters, The Beverly Brothers, The Undertaker, Kamala, The Ultimate Warrior, Ric Flair, Mr. Perfect, Randy Savage, The Legion of Doom, Money Inc, and the big main event of the British Bulldog vs. Bret Hart for the WWF Intercontinental title and the honor of the Hart family!

Full review of the show with the following matches:

    • The Legion of Doom vs. Money, Inc. (LOD split up after this show and Hawk goes AWOL.)

    • Shawn Michaels vs. Rick Martel in a heel vs heel match with the love of Sensational Sherri at stake.
    • The Natural Disasters vs. The Beverly Brothers with Lanny Poffo in what is, shockingly, the third best match on the show.

    • Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage for the WWF title with Ric Flair and Mr. Perfect making the match worse.
    • The Undertaker in a mess against Kamala.

  • DragonKingKarl Show: Mail bag! Free! Pioneer era, plus Demolition, WWE HOF

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Audio Show: FREE EDITION! Tell your friends! Today is a mailbag show with a wide range of questions and topics including:

    • The pioneers of wrestling what referees were in the days of Frank Gotch, Ed “Strangler” Lewis, and Joe Stecher.  The conversation also includes how state atheletic commissions played into things during the pioneer era and how wrestling pioneer William Muldoon figured into things.
    • Why is Demolition not in the WWE Hall of Fame?  Despite being one of the longest reigning tag teams in WWF/WWE history, Demolition has been all but erased from the record books.  They are viritually never mentioned.  Well, that’s not entirely true.  Demoltion Smash (Barry Darsaw) has been brought back for a few projects and even an appearance as the Repo Man so I tell you why that might be and how it probably also includes a member of the Moondogs.
    • There is a great and super informative email about the drawing power of Jim Londos defending him as legitimately one of the biggest draws in wrestling history.  I learned a lot myself from this one.

This is a free show today so tell your friends to give it a listen!  If you would like to order a Super Stern Stick Flashdrive please check out my website http://www.dragonkingkarl.com

    – Paul Heyman hypocrisy and a very good question on whether or not he is getting a free pass from journalists

    – Promoting indy shows in the 1990s and who was a pleasure to work with

    – The most insane publication, maybe in history, the National Police Gazette…and much more!

This show literally has something from everyone from the Civil War era to today, hitting almost every era in between. When you can talk about wrestlers as diverse as Frank A. Gotch, Shane Douglas, Mike Jackson, Demolition, and Verne Gagne, that is a great show!

  • DragonKingKarl Show: Wrestling demographics, Strong Style troubles, Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, more!

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Audio Show: Today’s show is a mailbag show with topics and questions including Shane McMahon’s return to WWE and some interesting scenarios it could set up that might appeal to the largest demographic watching WWE and more about the demographics of WWE and observations.  Other mailbag questions and topics include womens wrestling including a look back at how they have historically been booked and presented in wrestling history and how that is changing and what wrestling can learn from MMA.  We revisit the top of top Canadian stars including a possible new front-runner in the biggest Canadian draw of all time and it’s probably not who you think.  Also addressed today is a thought provoking email about the dangers of stiff strong style wrestling.  I also play with my new Amazon Echo which may be the greatest thing in the history of ever.  If you have been thinking about ordering one please consider buying it from the link at my website http://www.dragonkingkarl.com and maybe pick up a Super Stern Stick Flash Drive while you are over there.  Enjoy today’s FREE show! • DragonKingKarl Show: The death of Mark Nulty, pro wrestling historians, Canadian Wrestling

DragonKingKarl Classic Wrestling Audio Show: Thinking About Mark Nulty and Classic Wrestling History. On this show I want to take a little time and reflect on the contributions of Wrestling Classics owner and former announcer Mark Nulty to the wrestling history community and just where does pro wrestling history stand? What are we still following wrestling for and what is it doing for us? Why are the demographics of wrestling skewed so old and why do wrestling promoters ignore it? We will follow up on a recent conversation between Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez on a recent Wrestling Observer Radio show and take a more detailed look at what it all means.  Then we will examine the biggest draws in wrestling history and talk about who the biggest draw in Canadian history might be and discuss names like Whipper Billy Watson, Gene Kiniski, Bret Hart, Yvon Robert, Roddy Piper, Bret Hart, and more.
